[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 8/15/05

Snabbit888Posted on 06/24/06 at 06:15:34

Global Championship Wrestling made its first ever trip to Alabama, hitting the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham for Monday Night Explosion, the last Explosion before Summer Sizzler! What a huge show we have on deck for tonight, starting with an announcement. Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner let us know that earlier today, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer made the decision that Christopher Daniels and CM Punk will no longer be meeting at the pay-per-view. Instead, it will be Daniels teaming with Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. to take on the Prophecy in six-man tag team action. But never fear, because Daniels vs. Punk will take place here TONIGHT! Also, Monty Brown defends the North American Title against Charlie Haas, and in a big grudge match, Chuck Palumbo looks for revenge against Eddie Guerrero!

RANDY ORTON CLAIMS HE DIDN'T TAP OUT LAST WEEK, BUT OTHERS SEE IT DIFFERENTLY
The show kicked off with Randy Orton and "Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr. coming out for a little interview time. Randy Orton said that a lot of people have been saying this week that he is weak and with how quickly he tapped out shows he won't be able to last in the Elimination Chamber. Orton contradicted those statements by saying that Kurt Angle's Ankle Lock couldn't make him tap out and that he was merely making sure that he would be at 100% for next Sunday's pay-per-view. In fact, Orton added that no one in Global Championship Wrestling was man enough to make him submit. This brought out CHRIS BENOIT who came into the ring while Randy Orton was trying to backpedal on his statements. The Crippler wasn't here to talk though as he immediately threw Cowboy Bob out of the ring. Randy came to the defense of his father, but was dropped immediately into the Crippler Crossface. The Rabid Wolverine pulled back causing Orton to tap out feverishly. Benoit had proved his point and released the hold, allowing Orton to slither out of the ring. Benoit made him tap once, and we found out after the commercial break in the main event, he's going to have another chance.

Match #1
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. Charlie Haas (w/ Shelton Benjamin)
Monty Brown has held the North American Title for nearing one year now, taking on every challenger that has been put in front of him and beating them. Brown had a unique challenge tonight as he took on Charlie Haas, who also happens to be one-half of the World Tag Team champions. Haas and Shelton Benjamin have dominated the tag division since day one here in GCW, but they would love to add the North American Title to their list of accolades. The World's Greatest Tag Team's plan was to get an unfair advantage whenever they could, and the plan seemed to be going off without a hitch as Haas would throw Brown to the floor, distract the ref, and Benjamin would attack the Alpha Male. They did this on three occasions, and it was definitely taking its toll on the champ. Finally, ERIC ANGLE had seen enough as he came out and started going at it with Benjamin on the floor, tossing him into the ring post. This altercation served to distract Haas, who got a Pounce for his troubles and we saw another successful title defense for Monty Brown.

Monty Brown pinned Charlie Haas with the Pounce in 0:08:28.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

Yet another title defense for the Alpha Male. No one has been able to slow the beast from the Serengeti down yet, but Rhyno sure is going to try this Sunday. Meanwhile, the World's Greatest Tag Team seemed a bit flustered that Eric Angle got involved in this match, and with their not knowing who Angle's partner is going to be this Sunday, I don't think that is going to change. Eric Angle is not a tag wrestler by trade, but the element of surprise just might be enough to get tag gold around his waist.

Match #2
The Hurricane vs. Lance Storm
Lance Storm was looking for what he called a "warmup match" before he meets Chris Jericho again at Summer Sizzler, and the opponent he selected for that was The Hurricane. Anyone who knows The Hurricane knows he's anything but a warmup, but that didn't stop Storm from being confident all the same. That is, until Jericho himself made a cameo at the top of the ramp much like Storm did last week. Jericho was armed with a microphone and continually railed Storm for being the "most boring athlete in the world" and that his Maple Leaf gave new meaning to the term "resthold." Storm was not impressed as after he took the superhero down with a superkick, he opened up the ropes and invited Jericho to come down to the ring if he was such a big man. Y2J teased coming to the ring, getting halfway down the ramp when The Hurricane surprised Storm with a roll up and took the upset win!

The Hurricane pinned Lance Storm after a roll up in 0:03:40.
Rating: ***

Lance Storm could not believe that he had just been pinned, but The Hurricane got out of Dodge before he could experience any blow back from this. Jericho laughed at Storm and told him that he should get used to looking at the lights because that will be what happens at Summer Sizzler.

JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD IS TRYING TO MAKE A DEAL WITH ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN
With the Elimination Chamber on the horizon, JBL was in full businessman mode tonight as he was looking to make a deal to improve his odds of winning. The first man he approached was the World Heavyweight champion himself, Brock Lesnar. JBL laid out his entire business plan to Lesnar, giving the pros and cons of what an alliance would mean. JBL even had Lamont holding a large pie chart. JBL said that they would work together to eliminate the other four individuals and then they would duke it out, one-on-one, best man wins at the end. The Monster From Minnesota thought about it with a smile on his face before he got deathly serious and told JBL he doesn't need to make a deal with the devil to keep the World Heavyweight Title and to take his deal elsewhere. JBL was not happy to have been rejected and vowed revenge on the champion.

Match #3
Rhyno vs. Seth Skyfire (Unsigned)
I wish I could say for Seth Skyfire's sake that this was anything other than a display of how dominant the Manbeast can be, but it was not meant to be. The Birmingham native was excited that he got to wrestle on national TV in front of his friends and family, but Rhyno was not nearly as sentimental as it hardly took him a minute before he Gored young Skyfire nearly out of his boots. Game, set, match.

Rhyno pinned Seth Skyfire with the Gore in 0:01:05.
Rating: **

If Rhyno can pull out another match like this, we could be looking at the brand new North American champion.

Match #4
Matt Hardy (w/ Mickie James) vs. Doug Basham (w/ Shaniqua)
Matt Hardy is said to be very happy with his new girlfriend Mickie James, and she is proving to be a highly useful asset for him down at the ring during his matches too. Hardy took on Doug Basham, who as always had Shaniqua in his corner, and Shaniqua has shown many times over that she is not above getting physically involved to help her charges to victory. This was a good match, and Doug Basham showed a lot in this one to indicate that he may have a future in singles wrestling as he gave the former Television champion all he could handle. Shaniqua jumped up on the apron to give her man a hand, but Mickie James showed her aggressive side by pulling Shaniqua down to the floor and the catfight was on. During the confusion, Hardy hit Basham with a flying cross body press to get the win.

Matt Hardy pinned Doug Basham after a flying cross body press in 0:08:39.
Rating: ***

Mickie James has a lot of spunk, and even though she's not as experienced in the ring as Lita is, she might be able to take her down. The mixed tag team match at Summer Sizzler should prove to be very interesting.

ELIX SKIPPER BRAGS ABOUT INJURING PAUL LONDON, BUT RECEIVES A VISIT FROM A SURPRISE GUEST
"Primetime" Elix Skipper and Low-Ki came out for an interview, and Skipper talked, and it seemed as though he was going to offer an apology after the horrific injury that happened to Paul London a few weeks ago. Instead, Skipper was actually BRAGGING about injuring London, saying it felt good to hurt him and he would gladly do it again. Low-Ki couldn't believe what he was hearing and confronted his partner about it, but Skipper kept going until AJ STYLES, London's former partner, rushed out and tackled Skipper and started nailing him with right hands! The Phenomenal One was a man possessed as he rained blows upon Skipper's face. Low-Ki tried to pull him off, but Styles started punching Ki as well. Ki might not agree with Skipper's braggadocious ways, but he certainly isn't going to take being attacked lying down as he blasted Styles with a huge kick. Styles was suffering a 2-on-1 assault until a mystery man jumped the railing and nailed Low-Ki with a Yakuza kick! Skipper saw this man and went for a clothesline, but this man ducked, kicked Skipper in the gut and dropped him with a snap double underhook DDT. Skipper stumbled back to his feet, only to be dropped with a dragon suplex. Low-Ki pulled his partner out of the ring as this mystery man stood tall. We would find out that this mystery man was "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, an old friend of Paul London's and AJ Styles', and he's here to get a matter of revenge on Skipper. We will see Danielson in action for the first time when he and Styles team up to take on Skipper and Low-Ki in the pre-game show this Sunday.

Match #5
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs, Shark Boy
Edge was in rare brutal form tonight as he defended the Television Title against Shark Boy. Edge felt that Matt Hardy should have been suspended and Mickie James arrested for their attack on them a couple of weeks ago, but instead Tommy Dreamer signed a mixed tag team match for Summer Sizzler. Edge would love to take out his aggression on Dreamer, but since he can't do that, Shark Boy was the next best thing. A small flurry and an ass bite aside, Shark Boy couldn't get any offense in as Edge completely dominated him, finishing him off with the Impaler.

Edge pinned Shark Boy after the Impaler in 0:03:04.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Edge retained the GCW Television Title.)

Edge's title won't be on the line this Sunday, but to say this mixed tag match isn't important would be inaccurate. Edge and Lita want to eliminate Matt Hardy and Mickie James once and for all, and they'll have that opportunity at Summer Sizzler.

A FIGHT BREAKS OUT BACKSTAGE BETWEEN ABYSS AND STEVE BRADLEY
We cut suddenly to the back where we saw Abyss and Steve Bradley engaged in yet another epic fight. These two haven't been able to stay apart in recent weeks as they both love to fight. This should serve as a great preview of what is to come this Sunday when they meet with falls-count-anywhere rules. Officials couldn't get Abyss and Bradley separated as they were going at it like rabid animals, nailing each other with whatever wasn't bolted down (and if it was bolted down, they were throwing the other into it). The GCW Official Brigade finally got these two apart, but they are getting more and more difficult to restrain anymore. There will be nobody to stop them at Summer Sizzler, however, and that scares me quite frankly.

Match #6
"The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
Highlights of Eddie Guerrero's appearance on Palumbo's Pizza Place two weeks ago were shown, including Latino Heat carving the Italian Stallion's head with a pizza cutter. Palumbo has never been more enraged in his life, and he brought that into this match. With all respect to Palumbo, he hasn't been a great competitor here in GCW, but you would never know it from this match and it really surprised Guerrero. Palumbo was bouncing Eddie all around the ring and showing a level of competence never before seen from the Italian Stallion. Eddie was taken aback, but when he got the advantage after Palumbo missed an avalanche, he was absolutely RUTHLESS. Guerrero ripped the large bandage off of Palumbo's head and was punching at the cut from the pizza cutter, opening it back up. Palumbo tried to fight back, but he was losing a lot of blood as Eddie continued to rip at that gash. Palumbo was visibly weakening and despite his best efforts, he couldn't withstand it any more as he fell to the Frog Splash.

Eddie Guerrero pinned Chuck Palumbo with the Frog Splash in 0:11:52.
Rating: ***

The match had been brutal, but Guerrero wasn't done as he kept ripping at the gash on Palumbo's head before he went outside the ring. He reached underneath and pulled out a pizza cutter that he had placed under the ring some time before the show. Referee Antonio Santangelo tried to stop Guerrero, but he received a hard punch for his troubles (for which Guerrero is sure to be fined). Latino Heat kicked Palumbo a couple of times hard in the face before once again gouging that pizza cutter into the Italian Stallion's forehead, causing a sick amount of blood to stream down Palumbo's face. Guerrero then looked right into the camera and yelled, "This is for you, Foley!" The crowd was chanting for Foley to get to the ring to save Palumbo, but he wasn't in the building and Guerrero knew it. Eddie took the pizza cutter and opened a large cut on Palumbo's throat! This was one of the most disturbing things I had ever seen as Palumbo clutched his throat in an immense amount of pain. The medical staff came to check on Palumbo who was in bad shape. Thankfully the cut didn't cause any major damage, but the intent was definitely there. This guy needs to be stopped.

Match #7
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
Christopher Daniels is getting his chance to fight CM Punk a little earlier than he originally thought he would, but I don't think he had any problems with that. Punk, however, had a huge problem with this as he's been trying to avoid this battle for quite some time now. Punk avoided the battle for much of this match too, using a variety of stall tactics to get into the Fallen Angel's head. Daniels is much like Punk in that he doesn't get rattled during a match - he's immune to mind games. Punk tried to use Daffney as a distraction, but Daniels knew it was coming and caught Punk sneaking up on him. For a couple of minutes, Daniels exacted several months of being on the shelf stewing in anger on the leader of the Prophecy. The beating was getting so bad that Punk's minions, Sean O'Haire and Goldust, got to the ring to break it up.

Christopher Daniels and CM Punk battled to a double countout in 0:08:40.
Rating: *** 1/2

The crowd was booing loudly that this match ended in such a fashion, but those boos turned to cheers when BOOKER T and REY MYSTERIO JR. came down to make this a fair fight, aiding Daniels in clearing the ring of the Prophecy.

JBL'S DESIRE TO MAKE A DEAL WITH SOMEONE LEADS HIM TO KURT ANGLE
JBL was at it again, this time with Kurt Angle, attempting to make a deal with the former World champion in regards to the Elimination Chamber. Angle was a lot more receptive to JBL's proposal, but eventually he had to stop JBL. "We already have a deal, Bradshaw. Remember when I let you have Steve Bradley as a tag team partner? And remember what the deal was? If Bradley is your partner, you owe me a favor. Guess what, bucko? We can work together, and if we're the final two in the Elimination Chamber, I'm cashing in on my favor, and you're laying down and I'm pinning you to become the 3-time World Heavyweight champion, got it? We should make deals more often, Bradshaw." Angle patted JBL on the back as he left with a big smile on his face, leaving JBL absolutely infuriated.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
Earlier in the evening, Benoit made Orton tap out to the Crippler Crossface in an interview segment, and he was looking to do so here in this match. Benoit has a distant look in his eyes when you look at him now, stemming from his impending divorce with wife Nancy. He's put all of his energy into reclaiming the World Heavyweight Title, and he'll have that chance in the Elimination Chamber this Sunday. Orton will be one of the other men involved, and both would like to soften the other up going into the Chamber. Orton was wrestling very much like he did a week ago, being aggressive, but doing all he could to bail out any time the Crippler got on the advantage. Bob Orton Jr. interfered whenever he could, but it wasn't enough to get Benoit down for the count. Late in the match Cowboy Bob jumped on the apron as son Randy whipped Benoit toward him, the goal being to blast him with the cast. The Rabid Wolverine reversed it though, and Randy crashed into Cowboy Bob, knocking the elder Orton to the floor. Randy stumbled back to the middle of the ring where Benoit dropped him into the Crippler Crossface, causing Orton to tap out immediately.

Chris Benoit made Randy Orton submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:12:33.
Rating: **** 1/4

Two losses in a row does not bode well for Randy Orton, but according to him, at least he's healthy. He's going to need to be if he wants to survive the Elimination Chamber and take the World Heavyweight Title.

The time is upon us, Summer Sizzler! Live from the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, a city rich with wrestling tradition! Eight big matches are signed for the event.
