[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 7/18/05

Snabbit888Posted on 05/20/06 at 08:59:53

Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner welcome us to Monday Night Explosion, live from the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, just 6 days away from Chaos Reigns! On tonight's show, The Hurricane will take on John Bradshaw Layfield! Rey Mysterio Jr. will take on Petey Williams in a non-title match, Paul London and AJ Styles take on the Basham Brothers, and in our main event, Randy Orton takes on North American champion Monty Brown in a non-title match! What a night it will be!

KURT ANGLE WANTS OUT OF HIS MATCH AT THE PPV
It looks as though Kurt Angle has caught a case of the limber tail after his brother Eric came back from a severely injured ankle to attack him with a chair in a match last week. Kurt is claiming that he is too injured to compete after the "vicious, unprovoked attack" by Eric Angle a week ago. Commissioner Tommy Dreamer came out and said that he had talked to head doctor Barry Tarver and Kurt has been cleared to compete at Chaos Reigns. Kurt tried a different tactic at this point, saying that Eric Angle hasn't been cleared to wrestle, which is in fact true. Kurt seemed confident that he would now be getting the night off this Sunday, but Dreamer told him not to get too comfortable with that thought.

Match #1
Non-Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. (Cruiserweight champion) vs. Petey Williams
Petey Williams has been on a bit of a roll here recently, which earned him this non-title match against the Cruiserweight champion Rey Mysterio Jr. A win over the Cruiserweight champion in a non-title match will definitely catapult Petey up the ranks. This was a good clean match while it lasted. Both of these athletes pride themselves on being the best, and they like to do it by the cleanest means. We looked like we were on our way to seeing a great match until FRANKIE KAZARIAN got himself involved. Kazarian of course meets Mysterio for the title this Sunday, but he wanted to soften Mysterio up a bit it seems as he goaded Mysterio to the ropes and hit him with a hangman on the middle rope from the floor. The referee didn't see it nor did Petey Williams who was recovering after receiving the 6-1-9. Petey continued wrestling, hitting the Canadian Destroyer and picking up a huge (if not tainted) victory.

Petey Williams pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the Canadian Destroyer in 0:03:13.
Rating: ***

As Petey celebrated his win, Kazarian jumped in the ring and stomped away at Mysterio. Petey wasn't about to stand for that though as he grabbed Kazarian and hit him with a Canadian Destroyer as well! Kazarian's attempts to soften up Mysterio have backfired a bit at the hands of Petey Williams, who left the ring standing tall and on the up swing in the cruiserweight division.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM LEARN THAT DISRESPECTING TOMMY DREAMER IS NOT WISE
The World's Greatest Tag team were not at all happy with Tommy Dreamer's decision to give AJ Styles and Paul London a second chance to earn a World Tag Team Title shot last week and they came into Dreamer's office very vocal about it. Dreamer sat in silence while Haas and Benjamin railed at him mercilessly until Dreamer finally shouted, "ENOUGH!" Haas and Benjamin promptly shut up, only to hear Dreamer tell them that because of their horrible attitude, not only will they be defending the titles at Chaos Reigns, but they would also be defending the straps against two men tonight! The WGTT were livid, but not nearly as livid as they became when Dreamer refused to tell them who their opponents would be. I guess that goes to show that this is not the way you voice a complaint to the commissioner.

Match #2
"Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki vs. CM Punk/Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
Since Elix Skipper and Low-Ki cannot receive their guaranteed World Tag Team Title shot until the World's Greatest Tag Team lose the gold, they are still looking to stay on top of their game. Tonight they were in action against the Prophecy, CM Punk and Sean O'Haire, in a rare tag team match for them. Punk of course will be wrestling "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown for the North American Title in a Fire Table Match, so it was vital that he stay healthy, which is why he had O'Haire wrestle a good portion of the contest. Not a bad choice when your partner is as menacing as O'Haire is, but what Skipper and Low-Ki lack in size they make up for with speed and great tag team ability. However, once Punk got that vicious Anaconda Vice locked on Low-Ki, there was no escaping it. Skipper tried to break it up, but a big boot from O'Haire cut that off as Ki passed out in the deadly hold.

The Prophecy (CM Punk and Sean O'Haire) defeated Elix Skipper and Low-Ki when Punk defeated Low-Ki when Low-Ki passed out in the Anaconda Vice in 0:07:48.
Rating: **** 1/4

This is not the way Skipper and Low-Ki wanted this match to go, but that Anaconda Vice is proving itself to be a deadly submission hold. Despite this loss, Skipper and Low-Ki still have a title shot in the bag, but this is not the way they want to build momentum. For CM Punk, however, this is exactly what he needed before Chaos Reigns.

EDDIE GUERRERO'S PROVOKING OF MICK FOLEY CONTINUES
Eddie Guerrero is dead set on getting Mick Foley to meet with him, but the word from the Foley camp is that his guest referee job at Super Cade was a one-time gig done as a favor for Shawn Michaels. Latino Heat doesn't want to let this go though as he was out here again this week putting the bad mouth on the Hardcore Legend. Eddie continued calling Foley a coward just like he has been doing in recent weeks, daring Foley to show up at Chaos Reigns this Sunday. Eddie even pulled out a front row ticket and waved in the air, claiming that he purchased it especially for Mick Foley (my better judgment says he stole it from somebody). The challenge has been laid out there, but will Foley appear at Chaos Reigns, or is he going to continue to let Guerrero's taunts roll down his back?

Match #3
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Stevie Richards
Booker T's match with Stevie Richards tonight was a perfect example of how wrestlers don't work by the hour. With all the hell Goldust has been causing he and Sharmell, Booker has built up a lot of aggression and he took it out on the poor dancing Stevie. It didn't take much more than a minute for Booker to hit the Book End and put this one in the books (pun intended).

Booker T pinned Stevie Richards after the Book End in 0:01:16.
Rating: **

The losses just keep piling up for Stevie Richards. If Booker T brings this kind of intensity to Denver, we might see a repeat performance on Goldust.

KEN DOANE WANTS ONE MORE SHOT AT THE TELEVISION TITLE
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane was not satisfied with the way that he lost in his match for the Television Title a week ago against Matt Hardy, saying it was a fluke and that he could "kick Hardy's ass on his best day!" The fans weren't exactly taking to this new attitude from Doane, but they were soon distracted when EDGE and LITA came down to the ring. Doane told Edge to get lost, but the more experienced Edge said that Doane needs to understand protocol, and that the next shot at the Television Title belongs to the Rated R Superstar. Doane then changed his challenge from Hardy to Edge, which got a chuckle out of Edge, who told doane he was getting "too big for his britches." Edge turning into my grandma aside, he accepted the challenge and we had a match!

Match #4
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita)
Ken Doane may not have gotten the Television Title rematch he originally wanted, but the Teen Phenom is so desperate for respect that I don't think he cares who he goes up against. Edge, however, was looking to teach Doane a lesson, but he underestimated the rookie drastically. Edge misinterpreted early success in the match as meaning he was going to coast through this match, and it almost cost him several times as Doane kept catching him by surprise with a big move. Doane's attitude might be rubbing some people the wrong way, but you can't fault his heart and effort as he took Edge to the edge, so to speak, before the Rated R Superstar was finally able to duck a clothesline attempt an hit the Spear to get the 3 count.

Edge pinned Ken Doane with the Spear in 0:07:58.
Rating: *** 1/4

Edge passed a big test getting by Ken Doane in a hotly contested contest only six days before challenging Matt Hardy for the Television Title. Hardy didn't want to wait for Chaos Reigns though as he rushed down and put a steel chair right between Edge's eyes before Edge could react. Lita quickly escaped the ring knowing that with how pissed off Hardy is about her cheating on him, he wouldn't hesitate to wrap a chair around her head too. He might get his opportunity at Chaos Reigns.

TOMMY DREAMER MEETS WITH ERIC ANGLE
Tommy Dreamer met backstage with Eric Angle, who was sporting an air cast on his ankle that was hurt last week at the hands of Team Angle. Dreamer told Eric that he had spoken with Barry Tarver and was informed that he wouldn't be given medical clearance to wrestle Kurt Angle at Chaos Reigns. Eric was pissed, but Dreamer stopped him by saying that he knows Kurt Angle isn't at 100% either and he is going to give Eric the option of signing a release form that would allow him to wrestle still, but relieve GCW of any responsibility should he get hurt. It didn't take Eric Angle a moment's hesitation to sign the release form. Despite the injury, we will see brother vs. brother at the pay-per-view.

Match #5
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/Paul London vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
With every week they tag together, AJ Styles and Paul London become more fluid in the ring as a team. They have earned themselves a World Tag Team Title shot this Sunday, but they had one more huge test as they took on the former two-time champs, the Basham Brothers, who were accompanied as always by the ever dangerous Shaniqua. Styles and London have been working hard at their tag skills and it showed in this one with some of the tandem offense they used. The Bashams are too good of a team though to be completely outclassed, an they did what they do best to get back into the match. In the end though, Styles and London showed why they've been on such a roll when Doug Basham had AJ Styles set up for a Samoan drop. London ran in and nailed Doug with a dropsault, allowing the Phenomenal One to bring him down with a crucifix. London cut Danny Basham off with a second dropsault as Styles was able to hold Doug Basham's shoulders down for the pin.

AJ Styles and Paul London defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when Styles pinned Doug Basham with a crucifix in 0:06:45.
Rating: *** 1/2

The fans gave the number-one-contenders a great ovation after this win, which gives them a truckload of momentum going into their big shot. Shaniqua was not too happy with her charges as she gave them both a good whip with the riding crop on the way to the back.

Match #6
The Hurricane (w/ Abyss) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont & Steve Bradley)
Our next match was a preview of a match to take place this Sunday as The Hurricane took on John Bradshaw Layfield. Each man was flanked by his respective partner for the pay-per-view, which meant there were a lot of combustible elements around the ring at once. In the ring, this match was dominated by JBL, as it was expected because of his vast size and strength advantage. The Hurricane's unorthodox style helped offset some of JBL's brute strength, but not even the encourage of Abyss at ringside could help the Man In Green avoid the Stock Market Crash.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned The Hurricane with the Stock Market Crash in 0:04:39.
Rating: *** 1/4

After the match, Lamont was sent around to the other side of the ring to distract Abyss while JBL and Bradley stomped away at The Hurricane in the middle of the ring. It didn't take long for Abyss to figure out what was going on, so after making Lamont nearly crap himself, Abyss rolled in the ring where JBL and Bradley promptly made a hasty retreat.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - TELEVISION CHAMPION MATT HARDY
First let me start off by saying that the fact that "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo is becoming more and more popular every week is a little disturbing, but Palumbo's Pizza Place is fast becoming a popular segment on Explosion. His guest this week was the Television champion Matt Hardy, who had already made an appearance earlier tonight when he blasted Edge with a chair. Hardy said that the chair was only the beginning of the hell that Edge was going to feel for putting him through this personal torment. Hardy said he loved Lita with all that he had, but she showed what kind of no-good bitch she was, and she was on a sinking ship. Hardy promised both Edge and Lita a huge surprise at Chaos Reigns. There is a lot of speculation as to what this suprise could be, but we won't know for sure until this Sunday is in the books.

Match #7
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho/Lance Storm
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin made the mistake of getting far too lippy with Commissioner Tommy Dreamer earlier in the evening, and as a result, the Commish told them they'd have to defend their World Tag Team Titles tonight against a mystery team. Haas and Benjamin had no way to prepare for their opponents, who turned out to be former North American champion Lance Storm and former World Heavyweight champion "Y2J" Chris Jericho! The WGTT were furious about whom Dreamer chose as their opponents. This was a surprise for us as well as Storm and Jericho will be facing each other this Sunday in the former's retirement match, but it looks like he's going to get a chance to add the World Tag Team Titles to his resume' before he goes.

This was an absolutely fantastic tag team title defense as these four were given plenty of time to strut their stuff. This was the type of match that makes you miss the glory days of tag team wrestling. Many people forget that Chris Jericho and Lance Storm have a good deal of experience tagging together as they wrestled as the Thrillseekers back in the old Smoky Mountain Wrestling. From this match, it looked like they hadn't missed a beat. Y2J and Storm might be a great team from the past, but Haas and Benjamin are a great team of the present and they weren't wanting their now 7 month title reign to come to an end here. This match went back and forth for nearly 20 minutes and has to be considered one of the best matches we have ever seen on Explosion, but it didn't turn out well for the challengers. After the match had went bonzo gonzo, a miscue by Jericho resulted in him accidentally catching Storm with a flying leg lariat. Benjamin took Y2J out of the picture with the Dragon Whip while Haas quickly locked on the Haas of Pain. Storm held on for as long as he could, but had to tap out to the highly painful submission move.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Chris Jericho and Lance Storm when C. Haas made L. Storm submit to the Haas of Pain in 0:18:57.
Rating: **** 1/2
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin may still be the World Tag Team champions, but they had to assert themselves a lot in this match to keep the gold. Maybe next time they will think twice before they are disrespectful to our commissioner. Meanwhile, Jericho and Storm had a slight confrontation over the miscue, but cooler heads prevailed and the two shook hands.

BROCK LESNAR SPEAKS HIS MIND BEFORE THE MAIN EVENT
Before our final match of the evening, we heard from the World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. When asked what he thought about Randy Orton taking a match with someone like Monty Brown this close to a title shot, Lesnar said it all came down to arrogance. "Orton is a young punk. He thinks he's invincible. He's going out there wrestling Monty Brown thinking that if you can beat one big tough guy, you can beat them all. And I have wrestled Brown - he is a tough guy. But he's not Brock Lesnar, and he's not the World Heavyweight champion. My title reign just started, and it's not going to end for a very, very long time."

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Non-Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion) vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
Brock Lesnar hit the nail right on the head - Randy Orton wanted this match because he wanted to show he could beat a man who was big and strong just like the World Heavyweight champion. Well, he had that chance when he took on dominant North American champion "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown. After the opening minutes of this match, it looked like the Ortons were regretting this cocky decision to wrestle this close to the pay-per-view as Brown was bouncing Randy Orton around the ring like a pinball. A well-placed trip by Bob Orton Jr. helped get the advantage back for his son. Orton showed his arrogant side by trying to take Brown down with power moves, and the frustrating part for the fans was that it was working. You can say what you want about Orton's attitude but he has the skills to get it done in the ring. Brown has managed to hold onto the North American Title for 9 months now so he knows a thing or two about winning matches as he found his opportunity to make the comeback. Orton looked to be in a bad way as Brown set him up for the Pounce, but Orton had the presence of mind to reverse it into the R.K.O.

Randy Orton pinned Monty Brown with the R.K.O. in 0:13:24.
Rating: *** 1/2

Say what you want, but THAT was impressive. Brown has nothing to be ashamed of in this contest, but it has to hurt him going into his title defense on a loss. The smile on Randy Orton's face once he regained his senses said it all - he had done exactly what he wanted to do tonight with this victory. But will he be able to do the same thing to Brock Lesnar? You'll have to tune in this Sunday to find out!

Our next destination is Denver, Colorado for Chaos Reigns! The Pepsi Center is completely sold out, and with the lineup we have scheduled, there is no question why!

Wow, Petey gets another big big win. This roll is great for him and he should fit into future plans nicely if you go the route that it seems you will...

You're doing a good job building up Punk and the Anaconda Vice. Tough break for Skipper and Ki, especially since they're owed a tag title shot. I'm sure it'll come soon though.

Funny line about Eddie stealing the ticket, but I hope Foley shows up at Chaos Reigns... this angle is getting the build it deserves.

Yay Doane loses!! Don't get me wrong, I like Doane fine, but I feel him getting the Rocky push and... well, you know. Good push for Hardy-Edge this Sunday. You've done well on this angle so far...

Can't imagine Styles and London will go over Sunday, but they're certainly on the rise.I should care more about Abyss and Hurricane, b/c it's new fresh different and well done. But I just can't seem to do it. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Hmmm... surprise? Jeff Hardy? Perhaps Jeff Hardy in a mask? Ashley? We'll see...

Interesting choice going the route of having Storm and Jericho team here tonight, but I really liked it. I'm sure cooler heads won't prevail on Sunday, so I'll enjoy that a lot ;)

Good main event and RKO is hot going into the PPV with that win. Answer to that question at the end: no. :P
