[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 6/27/05

Snabbit888Posted on 05/13/06 at 05:17:52

Welcome to San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California for Monday Night Explosion! One week ago, Brock Lesnar accepted Randy Orton's challenge to a title match for Chaos Reigns, but before he can get to that pay-per-view, he makes his first title defense tonight against former World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho! Also on tonight's show, we will see the in-ring debut of Edge, Frankie Kazarian and Red fight to see who will wrestle for the Cruiserweight Title at Chaos Reigns, and we will hear from "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero. All that and a whole lot more!

Match #1
8-man Battle Royal - Winner gets Television Title shot next week
Participants: Booker T, Steve Bradley, "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane, "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo, Sean O'Haire, "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash, Steve Richards, Low-Ki
We kicked off the show with an 8-man battle royal where the winner would face Matt Hardy next week for the Television Title. All 8 men in this one were highly aggressive in this one wanting to clear the ring as early as possible. The first man to go was Low-Ki who missed a big kick and got himself caught up on the top rope, allowing Kid Kash to dump him over the top. Booker T soon followed thanks to a distraction from Goldust, who came down to ringside and blew kisses to his former tag team partner, allowing Kash to make his second elimination of the match. At this point Ken Doane took over, quickly eliminating Chuck Palumbo, Steve Bradley, and Kid Kash (note that he snuck up on all three men and dumped them covertly over the top to the floor). Doane was getting very full of himself, strutting around like he had this match in the bag already. Problem was there were still two men left, and one of them was Sean O'Haire, who spun Doane around and dropped him with a lariat. Doane was begging off trying his best to create some distance from O'Haire, but the Teen Phenom had nowhere to go after O'Haire caught him with a mafia kick. Doane stumbled back to his feet only to be clotheslined over the top by O'Haire. This left just O'Haire and Stevie Richards, the latter who has never tasted victory in GCW. He was hoping to here, jumping O'Haire from behind and then catching him with a big back elbow. Stevie was getting a little momentum going, but it got cut short when O'Haire scooped him up and dumped him onto the apron. O'Haire thought he had won, but Stevie held onto the ropes. Richards grabbed O'Haire from behind and tried to smash his face into the turnbuckle, but O'Haire blocked it and smashed Stevie's face into the turnbuckle instead, causing the Dance Machine to fall to the floor and be eliminated.

8-Man Battle Royal:
Sean O'Haire won an 8-man Battle Royal:
x Kash threw out Low-Ki in 0:00:31
x Kash threw out Booker in 0:00:53
x K. Doane threw out C. Palumbo in 0:02:15
x K. Doane threw out S. Bradley in 0:02:19
x K. Doane threw out Kash in 0:03:10
x O'Haire threw out K. Doane in 0:04:09
x O'Haire threw out Richards after a headsmash into the turnbuckle in 0:06:00
Rating: ***

An impressive display by Sean O'Haire, who will now meet Matt Hardy for the TV Title next week on our Fourth of July edition of Monday Night Explosion.

THE PROPHECY DISCUSSES PLANS, BUT MONTY BROWN HAS A PLAN OF HIS OWN
After winning the battle royal, Sean O'Haire joined Daffney and the leader of the Prophecy, CM Punk, backstage. They began discussing their plans, including how O'Haire will win the Television Title next week and that Monty Brown will soon be eliminated once and for all. Brown apparently had different ideas as he came in and showed no fear in getting right in Punk's face. Brown told Punk he just got out of Tommy Dreamer's office and was granted a match for Chaos Reigns. At the next pay-per-view it will be Monty Brown defending his North American Title against CM Punk, but for the first time ever, it will be a Fire Table Match! The only way to win the match is to put your opponent through a table that is on fire. Punk seems to have this fascination with fire, so this might play right into his hands at Chaos Reigns.

Match #2
Shark Boy vs. Goldust
Goldust's new attitude is not a popular one, but if this match is any indication, it could turn out to be a successful one. Goldust met Shark Boy in singles action tonight, and he was downright nasty, not even giving Shark Boy much of a chance to get out of the blocks. Sharkie's minimal offense couldn't slow down the Prince of Perversion, who picked up the win with the Shock Treatment.

Goldust pinned Shark Boy with the Shock Treatment in 0:04:21.
Rating: ** 3/4

Goldust wasn't satisfied with just winning the match as he picked Shark Boy up and hit him with the Curtain Call before putting Sharkie in the corner for the Golden Globes Kick. Luckily for Shark Boy's little swimmers, BOOKER T ran down and chased Goldust off before any more damage could be done. Goldust and Booker T are going to meet up sooner or later, so Goldust better run while he still can, because Booker T is not going to show him any mercy.

Match #3
Winner gets Cruiserweight Title shot at Chaos Reigns
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian vs. "The Amazing" Red
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian, the former Cruiserweight champion, had formed an alliance with "The Amazing" Red when Red was returning from injury. Kazarian was able to hold the Cruiserweight Title for two months, often with the help of Red. But at Super Cade, Red got selfish and tried to take the Cruiserweight Title for himself, and in the process, caused Kazarian to lose the title. The allegiance between the two completely broke apart last week in a tag team match, and now the two are wrestling each other with a shot at the Cruiserweight Title up for grabs. This was a great Cruiserweight contest. Kazarian knew that if he was going to beat Red, he had to try to ground him on the mat as much as possible, because Red can out fly almost anybody. Kazarian did a good job of that early, but Red is quick as a hiccup and kept the Future away from him. Though neither of these competitors are particularly popular, the crowd was highly into this match and were cheering the wrestling as opposed to the wrestlers. The climax of this match came when Red and Kazarian were fighting their way up the turnbuckles. Red was trying to get Kazarian in position for a top-rope huracanrana, but the Future fought out of it and hit a vicious looking top-rope DDT. I don't care who you are; you're not going to kick out of that one.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Red after a top-rope DDT in 0:05:32.
Rating: **** 1/4

Red needed to be helped to the back after the match as he was a bit shaken up after that vicious DDT, but he will be all right and not miss any time. Frankie Kazarian will now get a rematch for the Cruiserweight Title he recently lost, but how will Kazarian be able to fair against Rey Mysterio Jr. at Chaos Reigns?

EDDIE GUERRERO CALLS OUT MICK FOLEY
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero asked for some interview time tonight, and he had one clear agenda and that was setting the bait for Mick Foley. Eddie ran down Mick Foley, his history, his family, etc., doing everything he possibly could to get under his skin. Guerrero then threw the gauntlet down and dared Foley to show up at Explosion next week in Phoenix. As of press time, we don't have any word from Mick Foley, so I guess we will just have to wait and see until next week.

Match #4
Cruiserweight Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. (c) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper
Rey Mysterio Jr. is wanting to be a fighting Cruiserweight champion, defending his title for the second week in a row. This time he defended against "Primetime" Elix Skipper, a former World Tag Team champion. Skipper and his partner Low-Ki have a World Tag Team Title shot on the horizon once the World's Greatest Tag Team loses the gold, but Skipper would love to have the Cruiserweight Title around his waist in the mean time. Much like our other cruiserweight match earlier, this was a great one and a great gauge of the cruiserweight division. For over 8 minutes, these two went at it tooth-and-nail, exchanging nearfall after nearfall. Skipper came within an eyelash of taking the title when he hit the Play of the Day, but Mysterio was too close to the ropes. Skipper lost his cool a bit, made a couple mistakes, and that led to Mysterio being able to hit the West Coast Pop and retaining the gold in a highly competitive match.

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Elix Skipper with the West Coast Pop in 0:08:35.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Rey Mysterio Jr. retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

Skipper was highly frustrated after the match knowing how close he came to taking the gold, but when Mysterio offered a handshake, he did the right thing and accepted it. We don't see sportsmanship like that nearly enough. We now know it will be Rey Mysterio Jr. defending the Cruiserweight Title against Frankie "The Future" Kazarian at Chaos Reigns.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM OFFER AN OPEN CHALLENGE
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin came out in wrestling gear and the World Tag Team Titles around their waist. The two members of Team Angle patted themselves on the back for their 6-month plus title reign (which as, admittedly, been highly impressive), but this is when their mouths started to get them in trouble. The WGTT said that they could beat any two men in GCW, and to prove it they were offering any two wrestlers the chance to face them in a match, non-title of course. AJ STYLES and PAUL LONDON were more than happy to answer the call, and we had a great tag match on deck.

Match #5
Non-Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions) vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/Paul London
Though the World Tag Team Titles were not on the line, the relatively new team of AJ Styles and Paul London had a huge opportunity against the reigning champions, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin. Haas and Benjamin have quite the ego and really do feel they are the greatest tag team in the world, and their credentials definitely back that up. Styles and London had nothing to lose and they wrestled the same way. For two guys who hated each other in late 2004, Styles and London have built a lot of teamwork and trust in a short period of time, and I'm not sure Haas and Benjamin knew what to do with that. Haas and Benjamin could seem to do no right as Styles and London were one step ahead at every juncture in this match, winning the contest after Styles caught Haas by surprise with the Styles Clash. Benjamin tried to break it up, but a dropsault from London prevented that.

AJ Styles and Paul London defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Styles pinned C. Haas with the Styles Clash in 0:10:20.
Rating: ****

Styles and London were pumped that they had just scored a non-title victory over the World Tag Team champions, which has to shoot Styles and London up the rankings. Haas and Benjamin were immediately protesting what had happened, claiming this match doesn't count and that it was non-title so it should be thrown out. Thrown out or not, Haas and Benjamin are still the champs, but this goes to show that no matter how confident you are, there are always people on your heels.

KURT ANGLE SHOWS NO REMORSE FOR HIS ATTACK OF ERIC ANGLE
Kurt Angle came out to speak next to explain his actions from last week. Kurt misplaced his anger about losing the World Heavyweight Title on his brother Eric, and in one of the most heinous acts we've seen in GCW, attacked his own flesh and blood by locking him in the Ankle Lock. Kurt Angle was showing absolutely no remorse for what he did, reiterating the fact that he believes it was Eric Angle's fault that he was no longer World Heavyweight champion (as opposed to the fact that Brock Lesnar beat him in what could be the best match we will ever see in Global Championship Wrestling). Kurt wouldn't stop though as he continued to run down his own brother, telling of how embarrassed he was that Eric was his brother and that he has never been or never will be anywhere near the level Kurt is and even making ridiculous claims like their mother loves Kurt more. Eric Angle finally had enough, running out and assaulting Kurt, and the fist fight was on! Eric seemed to be impervious to pain, staggering his younger brother back and knocking him out of the ring. Eric was begging for Kurt to get back in the ring, but Kurt thought better of it. We have learned that Commissioner Tommy Dreamer has signed a match for Chaos Reigns pitting these two brothers one-on-one against each other. Just 8 days ago, these two were as close as could be. My how things change.

Match #6
Petey Williams vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita)
A week ago we were all shocked by the debut of Edge when he attacked Matt Hardy and revealed himself as the other man Lita had been seeing behind Hardy's back. Edge came down to this match smiling like the cat that ate the canary, proud to be in GCW and thrilled to be with Matt Hardy's girlfriend. Petey Williams had the dubious honor of being Edge's first official opponent. Edge, for as unpleasant as he is, is an amazing competitor, and he got to strut his stuff in this match. Petey was game, but Edge wasn't about to make his first match in GCW a loss. He nearly split Petey in half with the Spear to get the win.

Edge pinned Petey Williams with the Spear in 0:03:16.
Rating: ****

Edge looked good in his first match, but he was also brazen and cocky in doing so. He became even more brash when MATT HARDY was trying to make his way to the ring, but was cut off by the GCW Official Brigade. Edge was egging Hardy on, coaxing him to come into the ring. This one is a long way from over to be sure.

Match #7
Abyss/The Hurricane vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Abyss and The Hurricane were in tag team action next in preparation for their match at Chaos Reigns against John Bradshaw Layfield and Rhyno, taking on the former World Tag Team champions, the Basham Brothers. These two teams are by no means unfamiliar with each other, and this match picked up where their previous battles had left off. Abyss and The Hurricane are as different as can be, but as a tag team they mesh very well with their different styles. The Bashams know exactly what they're doing though, and they used their similar appearance to their advantage here, making illegal switches on more than one occasion. That would keep them in the match against the monster Abyss, but Abyss looked to be cruising to victory until RHYNO showed up at ring side. Abyss is a hard man to control, and he loves a good fight. And Abyss certainly hasn't forgotten Rhyno Goring him off of the stage a few weeks ago. Abyss and Rhyno brawled to the back, and despite The Hurricane's pleas, Abyss didn't return, getting himself counted out.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated Abyss and The Hurricane when Danny Basham defeated Abyss by countout in 0:07:20.
Rating: ** 1/4

Shaniqua doesn't care how her men win the matches, as long as they are getting her the winner's share of the purse. Though it wasn't his intention, Abyss' leaving to brawl with Rhyno left The Hurricane alone in the ring where he was hit with the Ball and Gag Bomb by the Bashams.

BROCK LESNAR AND CHRIS JERICHO HAVE A BRIEF CONVERSATION
Though Chris Jericho is a good guy all-around, he can't help but have a little fun with his opponents, even if that opponent is World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Y2J found Lesnar warming up just moments before their match and made a few jokes which he is prone to do, concluding with how he has been World Heavyweight champion once before himself and that it was time the title came back. Lesnar reminded Jericho that the only reason he won that title was because of him, and that Jericho could make all the jokes he wanted, but it wasn't going to save him from an F-5 tonight.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho
Brock Lesnar made his first title defense tonight, and he showed he wasn't going to be soft by defending against a former World champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho. Both of these men have had great 2005's up to this point, and it seemed like this one could go either way throughout much of it. Not long after the match started, RANDY ORTON and BOB ORTON JR. came out to the top of the ramp to scout Lesnar, and Lesnar was definitely aware of their presence. He didn't let it phase him too much though as he kept his game plan against Jericho. Near the end of the match when Lesnar looked to be setting Jericho up for the kill, the Orton's made their move. Randy Orton jumped up on the apron and grabbed the attention of referee Jimmy Appleseed. Lesnar started yelling for Orton to get down, but Jericho took a much more hands on approach. Not wanting Randy Orton to cost him his chance at becoming champion once more, Y2J dropped him to the floor with a springboard dropkick. Appleseed reached through the ropes and was pointing for Randy Orton to leave the ringside area, which made him blind to Bob Orton sneaking into the ring. Bob Orton was still wearing that ridiculous cast and he tried to take a swing at Lesnar, but the champ ducked and Orton Jr. connected with Jericho's skull instead. Lesnar tossed Bob Orton Jr. out of the ring and hit Jericho with the F-5 to get the 1-2-3.

Brock Lesnar pinned Chris Jericho with the F-5 in 0:11:44.
Rating: ****
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Brock Lesnar's first title defense results in him keeping the gold, but he's not happy about the way it went down. The show went off the air with Lesnar daring Randy Orton to get into the ring.

One more week in the books, and more matches added to the Chaos Reigns card. The second annual Chaos Reigns, which will take place from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, is shaping up to be of high quality, as these following matches show:

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Randy Orton

North American Title Fire Table Match - "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. CM Punk

Cruiserweight Title Match - Rey Mysterio Jr. (c) vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian

Brother vs. Brother - Kurt Angle vs. Eric Angle

Abyss/The Hurricane vs. John Bradshaw Layfield/Rhyno

Might this be the best episode of Monday Night Explosion, at least from a pure wrestling standpoint? Geez, some great matches all around.

Sean O'Haire seems to be everyone's favorite wrestler that the WWE hasn't gotten over (lousy booking, uncreative creative team). Looks like your Sean O'Haire is making good on his potential.

And what is up with Monty Brown asking for a match that interests CM Punk? I bet there is a method beyond his madness though.

If that match is any indication, Frankie Kazarian looks determined to regain the Cruiserweight Title.

And I love the booking of Edge. That's Edge at his best. And since you're a fan of his work, everything seemed to work out great that he could join your promotion. Hopefully, your booking of the Matt Hardy/Edge feud is better than the WWE's.

You've always paid attention to your tag team division, which is definitely a lost art in professional wrestling.

Brock Lesnar makes for such a great, credible world champion. He can work any kind of style and can go with any kind of wrestler (well, Goldberg excluded). However, Randy Orton, despite the attitude issues, makes for a great and worthy challenger, so it should be interesting how everything goes leading into Chaos Reigns.

Tag divisions are tricky with the "WWE style" that I use.  It's because with only one TV show a week and so much singles stuff, it's hard to fit many tag teams in angles at one time.  I try my best, but there are casualties (the Bashams come to mind right now).  At the end of 2005 TNM time, there are going to be some changes made that I'm hoping will at least help the problem of me trying to get too much going on at once.

Thanks for the comments.
HugeRockStar760Posted on 05/13/06 at 07:32:30

Might want to check one of your interview headlines, specifically the one about Kurt Angle. :-)
Snabbit888Posted on 05/13/06 at 07:35:14

Damn you.  Kurt Angle is so much a bad ass, he doesn't even care if he beats himself up.

I pictured "Liar, Liar": I kicked my own ass!
rey619Posted on 05/15/06 at 09:59:00

O'Haire and Doane were the only two plausible winners, but you're probably doing the right thing pushing Doane slowly, and not putting him into the title picture so soon, and it fits nicely that the Prophecy's big-man tries to take back what has been theirs for so long (Daniels, and then Punk).

Flaming table match... ouch.. Brown is trying to beat Punk at his own game.. wonder how that will play out.

Shark Boy's little swimmers.. hah.. have I told you that I dig the Goldust heel turn? Hopefully he will do something nasty to Sharmell soon.. just to piss Booker off.

Nice cruiser action, Kazarian is way better than Red in my opinion, and makes a lot more sense as a credible champ / contender. Reckon you will pull a 4-star match out of him and Rey Rey at Chaos Reigns.

Love to see Eddie / Foley go at it, in what will be one of Eddie's last feuds :(

With the somewhat strange combination of Triple X winning the top contendership at Super Cade, but not being able to challenge the WGTT, I highly suspect that London and Styles will be the team to take the straps away from them, and the non-title match win strengthens my suspicions. This is, by the way, the third 4 star match in a row.. highly impressive.

No, wait... make that four in a row... even your squash matches gets 4 stars..  ;D

Jericho and Lesnar have had great 2006's? Do you mean 2005's?

By the way, what was your overall card rating? Must have scored close to 4 stars?
Snabbit888Posted on 05/15/06 at 10:06:32

The overall card rating was *** 3/4.
MatteusPosted on 05/15/06 at 20:25:07

Great battle royal to start. O'Haire wins! Kinda hope he beats Hardy for The Prophecy, but doubt it. I was rooting hardcore for Stevie though. I need to adopt your write-up style sometime... doing it my way is taking a lot of time :P The fire table match should be brutal.

Kazarian goes over! Should be a good rematch for the belt :)

Foley's gotta show... can't wait!

Surprised that London and Styles went over and the WGTT finally loses a match :P ... I'm sure they'll get a rematch, but I like this combination of Styles and London. Wonder how long it'll last.

Petey vs. Edge would be a huge match in UW :P and yet Edge gets the squash win in 3 minutes here. BUT it works here, and a good debut for Edge. I can't wait to see what you do with him in GCW ;D

"Winners share of the purse" ... I miss that. The idea that the winner gets more money than the loser seems to have been lost on wrestling, but it can give wrestlers added incentive to win. Nice touch.

Awesome main event! Lesnar retains, but Jericho got robbed. Nice touch all around to keep feuds going!
Snabbit888Posted on 05/15/06 at 20:35:13

Just so you know, this is a little misleading.  I got a lot of cards written when Chris' computer was on the fritz so he couldn't write GLWF.  So you think I'm churning out a ton of cards quickly right now, and that's not entirely true.  I just have through 8/15/05 written from when Chris' computer sucked.  I'll admit I got about 7 cards written in 10 days which was impressive, but that was because I was highly motivated, not because of my writing style. :)
MatteusPosted on 05/15/06 at 20:47:59

I wasn't so much commenting on the fact that you've posted about twenty cards in the past three days (kidding ;)) so much as writing it like I do can be a bit taxing and makes me not wanna write it sometimes.
