[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 7/4/05

Snabbit888Posted on 05/14/06 at 10:20:32

Welcome to the American West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona for a Fourth of July edition of Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, Matt Hardy defends the Television Title against Sean O'Haire, Booker T goes one-on-one with Kurt Angle, Eric Angle and John Bradshaw Layfield do battle, and in a falls-count-anywhere WAR, Abyss meets Rhyno! We will also hear from Eddie Guerrero, and Rey Mysterio Jr. will be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place! All that, and more information will be given on Chaos Reigns!

TOMMY DREAMER SETS TONIGHT'S MAIN EVENT MUCH TO THE ORTONS CHAGRIN
Commissioner Tommy Dreamer started off the show by setting our main event. After what happened last week in the World Heavyweight Title between Brock Lesnar and Chris Jericho, Dreamer came out and said that he has had enough of how the Ortons have been trying to run roughshot and doing whatever they want, so he was going to put an end to it tonight. In our main event, it would be Lesnar against Orton, but not Randy, but rather Bob Orton Jr.! When the Ortons heard about this they threw a fit, saying Bob has long since been retired. Dreamer reminded them both that Bob Orton Jr. is under contract and as commissioner, he called the shots. The Ortons have no idea what they have gotten themselves into.

Match #1
Television Title Match
Matt Hardy (c) vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
Sean O'Haire earned this title shot after winning an 8-man battle royal a week ago and was looking to bring the Television Title back into the Prophecy where it has lived almost exclusively for the last 9 months before Matt Hardy won it. Hardy has a lot on his mind these days with the appearance of Edge in GCW, but he was going to have his hands full with O'Haire here. Hardy is known for letting his emotions get the better of him, and it didn't help him when Edge himself appeared on the ramp with Hardy's ex-girlfriend Lita, taunting him from afar. This distraction led to being unfocused and Hardy ending up on the receiving end of a lot of punishment. In the end though, Hardy's reversal of a Prophecy attempt from O'Haire into a DDT opened the door for Hardy to hit the Twist of Fate and get a hard fought title defense.

Matt Hardy pinned Sean O'Haire with the Twist Of Fate in 0:08:59.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Matt Hardy retained the GCW Television Title.)

MATT HARDY CHALLENGES EDGE
Matt Hardy grabbed a microphone immediately after picking up the win and directed his attention toward Edge. After having a few choice words for the promiscuous nature of Lita, Hardy threw it all on the table and challenged Edge to a match at Chaos Reigns. After talking some big words from afar, Edge accepted Hardy's challenge and we will have a Television Title match on pay-per-view.

Match #2
Shark Boy vs. "The Amazing" Red vs. Petey Williams vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash
GCW prides itself on its vast amount of talent across the board, and in our next four corners match the cruiserweight division was highlighted as Shark Boy, Red, Petey Williams, and Kid Kash locked up elimination style. Though this wasn't an official contenders match, a victory here would definitely help to cement the winner in the hierarchy of the cruiserweight division. Wrestlers had to tag in and out of this match, but there were long chunks of time when that was irrelevant in the eyes of the competitors. During one of these free for alls, everyone's general dislike for Kid Kash shined through again as it became 3 against 1. Kash couldn't defend himself against the onslaught, being pinned after Red caught him with a Frankensteiner from the top rope. Red's night would continue as he made the second elimination of this match as well when he caught Shark Boy climbing to the top rope and then brought him down with a top-rope Frankensteiner.

This left just Red and Petey Williams, and for the next two minutes they went at it full speed, matching each other move for move. These two will help to spearhead the future of the cruiserweight division, and based on this two minutes, I think they are two solid cogs. After a series of great counter wrestling, Petey managed to hit what many consider to be the most brutal finishing move in GCW, the Canadian Destroyer to get the 1-2-3.

Four Corners Match:
Petey Williams defeated Kid Kash, Red and Shark Boy:
x Red beat Kash via a Frankensteiner from the top rope in 0:03:29
x Red beat Shark Boy via a top-rope Frankensteiner in 0:05:30
x P. Williams beat Red via the Canadian Destroyer in 0:07:34
Rating: ****

A great win for Petey Williams, who desperately needed a win like this to help solidify his place as a singles wrestler. Wtih this win, Petey will shoot up the ranks of the cruiserweight division, but in a losing effort, the same has to be said about Red.

Match #3
Eric Angle vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
We saw Eric Angle in action for the first time since his brother attacked him, and the crowd was a little mixed. Eric Angle has been a tremendous competitor, having had a long and successful undefeated streak. Though he has shown himself to be mortal in recent weeks, Angle can still get it done in the ring, though it was going to be interesting to see how he mentally deals with his own brother attacking him like that. He had a huge mountain to climb right from the get go as he had to face John Bradshaw Layfield. It didn't take long for KURT ANGLE to make an appearance at ring side, and by the look of his neck, he was wearing every medal he has ever won in an obvious attempt to get under Eric Angle's skin. It was Kurt's way of telling Eric, "Hey, look how much better than you I am. Look at all I have won." Eric Angle tried to keep his cool, but there was no way he was going to be able to restrain himself. Eric came over toward Kurt and took a swing through the ropes. Kurt dodged, and responded by drilling Eric with a right hand filled with a medal, causing the disqualification.

Eric Angle defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:02:44.
Rating: * 1/2

JBL was not at all happy that he just lost the match thanks to Kurt Angle's interference, and when Kurt came in the ring to fight with Eric, JBL spun the former World Heavyweight champion around and got in his face. JBL and Kurt Angle were yelling back and forth until Eric Angle shoved his brother from behind, causing him to crash into JBL! JBL retaliated by nailing Angle with a right hand and the fight was on! Eric Angle left the ring laughing as Kurt and JBL exchanged shot after shot while he got away free as a bird. The GCW Official Brigade ran in to break up the fight, much to Eric Angle's chagrin as he was having a grand ol' time watching these two go at it. He might not be having the best time at Chaos Reigns when he has to meet his brother though.

LANCE STORM MAKES THE CHALLENGE FOR HIS LAST MATCH
Lance Storm made the announcement at Super Cade that because of nagging injuries and a loss of desire, he will be retiring from Global Championship Wrestling and from the sport as a whole. He has had a good run, even winning the North American Title last year before having to forfeit it after injuring his shoulder. Storm said he thought long and hard about who he would ideally want his last opponent ever to be before deciding on one man. He broke into the business with the man he challenged, even wrestling his very first match against him. Storm said what better way to go out than to wrestle his last match against the same person, that person being "Y2J" Chris Jericho. The challenge has been laid out on the table and we have heard that Jericho will answer the challenge one way or another next week as the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place.

Match #4
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. Stevie Richards
Our next match wasn't much of a competitive contest as rookie sensation Ken Doane took on Stevie Richards. There have been murmurs backstage that Doane is upset with the quality of competition he has seen thus far, and with all due respect to Stevie Richards, he couldn't be too thrilled with his competition tonight. Stevie is a veteran, but Doane, regardless of some of the bad arrogant habits he may be picking up in the big time, is a wrestling prodigy and has all the makings to be a big star in GCW. That potential continues to shine through, aiding Doane to victory over Richards tonight with the Doane-nation.

Ken Doane pinned Stevie Richards with the Doane-nation in 0:06:36.
Rating: ** 1/2

Another good win for the young superstar. If he keeps winning like this, it can only be a matter of time before the Teen Phenom is thrust into the title picture.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION REY MYSTERIO JR.
Rey Mysterio Jr. was the latest guest on Chuck Palumbo's ridiculous (yet increasingly popular) interview segment, Palumbo's Pizza Place. The Cruiserweight champion spoke about how excited he was to be the Cruiserweight champion for the second time, and then spoke about his upcoming title defense against Frankie "The Future" Kazarian at Chaos Reigns. Mysterio seemed confident that he would have a tough match at the pay-per-view but he would be walking out as the Cruiserweight champion. Kazarian wasn't ready to listen to this as he came out. Kazarian made some good points, such as that Mysterio didn't beat Kazarian at Super Cade and that back in March when they met one-on-one, it was Kazarian getting his hand raised and not Mysterio. Mysterio responded with that is then and this is now, and that Rhyno wouldn't be here this time to hit him with a Gore. Kazarian was offended by the implication that he needed help to beat Mysterio, saying it would be a pleasure to take that Cruiserweight Title back at Chaos Reigns. Kazarian's ego got the better of him, and now he has painted himself into a corner about having no one there to help him.

Match #5
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Kurt Angle
This is the type of match we love to see here on Explosion. Booker T hasn't wrestled in singles matches in quite awhile, but he is a multi-time champion in wrestling and knows when to bring it. That coupled with Kurt Angle, who despite his crappy attitude never fails to bring his A game, we had ourselves a tremendous match. Two superstars giving it their all, no titles on the line, just pride. The longer this match went, the more the crowd seemed to be in awe of two of the world's best exchanging nearfall after nearfall. Just when one man would seem to have the clear advantage, BAM, the tide would turn. It's unfortunate that such a great match had to end under the circumstances that it did. Angle is a world class athlete, but part of what has made him a great professional wrestler is that he is willing to take a win no matter how it comes. Late in the match when Booker was gaining momentum and had the crowd on its feet after he hit a Book End, GOLDUST came down and began to harass Sharmell. Booker T wasn't going to stand for that, jumping to the floor and putting himself between his wife and the demented gold freak. Meanwhile in the ring, Kurt Angle had a hold of referee JD Sanders, grabbing onto him to pull himself up. In doing so, the referee was blind to Goldust pulling out an ether soaked rag from under his robe and smothering Booker with it! Booker struggled to get away, but he soon was overcome by it and went unconscious. Goldust picked up his limp body and put him back in the ring. Kurt Angle, wanting to somehow make this victory seem like his own, put the already knocked out Booker in a sleeperhold, which obviously Booker couldn't get out of.

Kurt Angle made Booker T submit to a sleeperhold in 0:16:01.
Rating: **** 1/4

Things were about to get worse for Booker though as Goldust came into the ring and saw Booker unconscious, suddenly feigned that he was worried, and gave Booker mouth-to-mouth! Angle was a little disturbed by this sight as he started to leave the ring, only to be met with an ERIC ANGLE right hand! The crowd exploded as Eric unloaded on his brother with right hands, and even gave Goldust a few shots as well before Kurt and the Golden One both headed for higher ground. We have since learned that a tag team match has been signed for next week featuring Booker T and Eric Angle taking on Goldust and Kurt Angle. How these highly odd pairings are going to fair is anyone's guess, but we will get to see the Angle brothers on opposite sides of the ring for the first time ever.

Match #6
If Paul London wins, he and AJ Styles receive a World Tag Team Title shot at Chaos Reigns
Paul London vs. Shelton Benjamin
After beating the World's Greatest Tag Team a week ago in a non-title match, AJ Styles and Paul London feel as though they should receive a title shot. Though that is completely justifiable, seeing how recently they began to team, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer said they would need to prove themselves one more time, setting up a singles match London and Shelton Benjamin. If London won the match, he and Styles would wrestle for the gold at Chaos Reigns. If not, the World's Greatest Tag Team would get the next pay-per-view off. In an attempt to prevent any sort of screwjob ending, Dreamer also banned Styles and Charlie Haas from ring side. This was a great match between two of GCW's best and brightest. Benjamin may very well be the best pure athlete in all of Global Championship Wrestling, and London's innovative style could help him break out as not only a cruiserweight, but in the heavyweight division as well. Benjamin isn't used to wrestling guys who can do the kind of athletic things he can and it threw him off his game a bit, as London was controlling the pace of the match. Benjamin got desperate late in the match when he "accidentally" caught referee Antonio Santangelo in the eye with an errant eye gouge. While Santangelo clutched at his eye, Benjamin cocked back and kicked London right in the groin, causing the former Cruiserweight champion to crumple to the mat in immense pain. The T-Bone Exploder was the quick followup and Benjamin had stolen a victory.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Paul London with the T-Bone Exploder in 0:05:58.
Rating: ****

Thanks to blatantly underhanded tactics, it looks like the World's Greatest Tag Team get Chaos Reigns off. AJ Styles came out to console his partner (and make sure the WGTT didn't try anything) but London was obviously quite upset over what just went down. I'm sure they'll be getting a title shot in the future, but it won't be on July 24th.

EDDIE GUERRERO CALLS OUT MICK FOLEY
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero is still going around telling everyone who will listen that Mick Foley screwed him at Super Cade. While the video tape and common sense will show that isn't the case, Eddie still insists of engaging in this crusade to get retribution on the Hardcore Legend. Guerrero went on a long tirade belittling Foley, calling him everything he could think of but a good person. The speech hit its climax when Latino Heat actually dared Mick Foley to come to the ring, knowing full well that Foley was nowhere near Phoenix. When Foley inevitably didn't show up, Guerrero gave him the ultimate verbal insult for a wrestler by calling Foley a coward. If Eddie really wants Foley that badly, this might be the way to do it, but who would want to piss the Hardcore Legend off?

Match #7
Falls-Count-Anywhere Match
Abyss vs. Rhyno
Talk about a clash of the titans! A few weeks ago after being hired by John Bradshaw Layfield, Rhyno nearly put Abyss out of commission for good when he Gored him off the stage through some tables. These two men got into it again last week causing Abyss to get counted out in a tag team match against the Bashams, as these two monsters brawled all the way to the back. Commissioner Dreamer, being the ECW alum that he is, issued a statement saying that if they wanted to fight all over the arena, they'd get their chance tonight in a falls-count-anywhere match. After this one, all I can really say is... WOW. Two powerful monsters let loose with no rules and free reign of the building is the perfect recipe for am brutal fight. Abyss and Rhyno weren't shy about using the falls-count-anywhere stipulation to its fullest, wrestling all over the ring side area, through the crowd, and even through the backstage area. It didn't take long into the match for both men to be in a tremendous amount of pain, especially after Rhyno hit the Gore on Abyss through a door in the back. He hurt himself on the move as well though and couldn't capitalize with a pinfall, so when he did finally get the pin, somehow the Monster got a shoulder up. Rhyno couldn't believe it, but the Manbeast was in for even more disbelief when in a freakish feat of strength, Abyss picked him up and threw him through a plaster wall! As the crowd chanted, "HOLY SHIT," Abyss brought Rhyno back out onto the stage area. Rhyno as out of it, but Abyss wasn't satisfied yet as he brought the Manbeast to the edge of the stage and power bombed him 12 feet down through a table! How Rhyno isn't dead at this point is beyond me. Abyss methodically jumped down from the stage and made the academic pin.

No-Countout-No-DQ-Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Abyss pinned Rhyno after a power bomb in 0:12:16.
Rating: ****

That was insane. I haven't seen anything like that power bomb. The medical team immediately came to check on Rhyno, and it didn't look good. Rhyno suffered a couple of cracked ribs and some minor internal injuries, but he is definitely going to be out for a few weeks. It's too soon to tell, but it doesn't look like Rhyno will be able to compete at Chaos Reigns, which leaves JBL in a tight spot to be sure.

CM PUNK IS MENTALLY PREPARING FOR THE FIRE
Our next segment was a bit on the creepy side as CM Punk and the Prophecy was nestled in some dark corner of the building. Punk sat there with a lighter repeatedly turning it on and off. Punk told us all of his love of fire, saying that it has always fascinated him. "I want to see you burn, Monty Brown. It's not about the North American Title. It's about making you suffer for your sins." Punk didn't go into any depth over what those sins might be, but there is definitely a method to his madness. Punk concluded by saying that at Chaos Reigns, Brown's own personal hell will become a reality when he is burned by the fires of hell. The interview concluded with Daffney's shrieking laugh.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Non-Title Match
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion) vs. "Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr. (w/ Randy Orton)
Bob Orton Jr. has gotten himself involved in one too many of his son's matches according to Commissioner Tommy Dreamer, and to punish him for his constant interfering, Dreamer put him in our main event against the World Heavyweight champion and his son's opponent at Chaos Reigns, Brock Lesnar! Things started off poorly for the Cowboy as head referee Jimmy Appleseed ordered him to remove his cast before the match could get underway. Both Ortons vehemently argued the decision, but there is no way that Cowboy Bob's arm is still broken after 20 years. Once the match got going, it was an ugly affair. Cowboy Bob is a legend in the ring, no question about it, but you would be hard pressed to find another wrestler in the world who is better than Lesnar at this moment in time. Cowboy Bob got some token offense in, but this was cruel and unusual punishment. Lesnar took great pleasure in destroying the elder Orton, keeping it primarily kick-punch with a hard slam thrown in here and there for good measure. Randy Orton was beside himself on the floor, trying anything he could to help his father out. It would all be in vain though until a nearly unconscious Cowboy Bob happened to fall through the ropes after a hard Lesnar clothesline. Randy handed his father the hard cast he had taken off earlier in plain sight of Jimmy Appleseed. Appleseed reprimanded Randy before trying to get the cast away from Cowboy Bob. Lesnar came out to the floor at this point to get at Randy Orton, but a poke to the eye and a sickening chair shot from the number-one-contender put the World champion down and out! Cowboy Bob rolled back into the ring, and although he looked like absolute hell he won the match (thanks to his no good son).

Bob Orton Jr. defeated Brock Lesnar by countout in 0:09:57.
Rating: * 1/2

Randy Orton's assault was only getting started as he threw the champion back in the ring and tied him up in the ropes. Orton then grabbed the chair and the World Heavyweight Tite, bringing them both into the ring. Orton unloaded with one more vicious chair shot on the hapless Lesnar, who was out cold and bleeding from the head now. Orton then grabbed the World Heavyweight Title and right in front of Lesnar and with an assist from his dad, put the championship around his waist as we went off the air.

Only 20 more days until our next pay-per-view spectacular, Chaos Reigns, live from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on July 24th! The card is huge, so far with 7 matches and 4 titles on the line! Here is a rundown of the card:

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Randy Orton

North American Title Fire Table Match - "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. CM Punk

Television Title Match - Matt Hardy (c) vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge

Cruiserweight Title Match - Rey Mysterio Jr. (c) vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian

Brother vs. Brother - Kurt Angle vs. Eric Angle

Abyss/The Hurricane vs. John Bradshaw Layfield/Rhyno

And just added... Booker T vs. Goldust
rey619Posted on 05/15/06 at 11:30:49

Wow, GCW just keeps pumping out cards.. goodie!

Bob Orton vs Lesnar? Somethings smells... fishy...

While your tag-team division may be in regression, your cruiserweight division is really heating up. You have so many potential title contenders, and you always find the space to put in a cruiser match or two on Explosion. Which always delivers.

Eric seems to be the one with the brains in the family. I predict a JBL vs Kurt match for next Explosion.

Storm vs Jericho is a perfect end to Storm's career. Hopefully, they can have a face vs face athletic challenge.

What kind of finisher is the Doane-nation?

I really like Palumbo's Pizza Place, it's a good thing that you find an important spot on the show for a jobber like Chuck, and that it doesn't always fall into the same talk-show routine (host insults and attack guest).

Guess I was wrong about the JBL and Angle match.. but something must come out of this, you don't call down the entire GCW Brigade without any aftermath..

Guess I was wrong about London and Styles' title shot as well.. unless Dreamer still decides to give them a shot due to the underhand tactics.

A really big win for Bob here, even though Randy did help him.. a lot.. there will be heck to pay soon for the Ortons!

Great show as usual, Chaos Reigns seems to be shaping up nicely.
MatteusPosted on 05/15/06 at 20:45:51

Good defense for Matt. Edge/Hardy should be good at Angles Reign, though I hope you can do something different with these two than WWE did ;)

Huge huge win for Petey. He really did need that.

Har! Great angle with the medals around the neck and I like the JBL/Kurt battle to end it. Looking forward to Angles Reign :)

Storm/Jericho in Storms last match? Sounds about right. I've gotta wonder when Jericho's last match will be though. Pretty soon probably.

Ken Doane wins... again. But this time it's against Stevie Richards, so I can't whine too much about it.... I can whine, just not much :P

Good match between Angle and Book. This Booker and Goldust thing is gonna be awesome and next week's tag match should be a lot of fun!

The WGTT gets Angles Reign off? Noooes! Oh well... London and Styles aren't looking too good after that. Uh oh...

Ooooo, Abyss and Rhyno :D. This should be sick. Great brutal match. Abyss goes over AND injures the Man Beast. JBL is in trouble...

Monty's sins? Might be that the leopard skin tights and African gimmick set his peoples' movement back a bit, but... nah. Maybe just the tights ;) (PS, can't wait for the match ;D)

Wow, that's painful. Lesnar beat Jericho but lost to Bob Orton Sr.? Bummer... at least he didn't job the title to Mariko... or whatever her name is. She's so awesome.
