WWC Royal Rumble - 01.30.07

rey619Posted on 05/08/06 at 17:40:54

Well, after a few busy weeks with work, travel and illness, I've finally been able to book and run the Royal Rumble card. So without further ado, here's the pre-show Velocity show, presented to you FREE on live stream through www.wwcwrestling.com!

- A distraught Rey Mysterio is being comforted by Batista. The former WWE Champion said that he would take it upon himself to find his family and get to the bottom of this. Rey said it was too late, and that he had no choice but to lie down to Randy Orton, much like Jeff Jarrett once did to Hulk Hogan. Batista said he would take care of it.

- Josh Matthews interviewed Jamie Noble and Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes said that his 365-day guarantee would come into fruition tonight, as Noble would win the Cruiserweight Championship. Noble again repeated his promise from last Smackdown, where he vowed to be the first man to win the title through submission.

- CM Punk enters MNM's locker room as Melina is getting dressed. Punk tells her that watching her getting dressed is almost as fun as watching her getting undressed. Melina smiles a sarcastic smile and asks him what he wants. Punk says he wants to discuss business, something that would benefit them both. Melina agress to let him speak, as long as the camera gets out of here. As the scene fades out, we see that Punk has a bottle of whipped cream hidden behind his back...

- We see a short glimpse of Lashley doing squats, before switching to Test imitating the "bulky" Lashley in front of Mexicools, the Shane Twins and a couple OVW wrestlers here for the Rumble. Shane O'Mac walks by with a dog leash, but says nothing. A picture can sometimes say more than a thousand words.

Pre-show match
[Dark Match]:
William Regal made Nunzio submit to the Regal Stretch in 0:14:15.
Rating: ** 3/4

After Regal's victory, he calls out Elijah Burke, who enters with his dancing partner, "the Blonde Bombshell" Beth Phoenix. Regal said that many may view him as old, archaic and conservative, but the truth is, he got some moves in him as well. He challenges Burke to a dance-off! The crowd can't believe it, how can Regal expect to beat Burke in a dance-off! Burke accepts, and suggests using Michael Cole as the un-biased judge! Regal surprisingly agrees. Cole is nervous doing this, looking over at Taz for acceptance. Taz doesn't say anything, just shaking his head over and over again. Cole gets in the ring, and Burke starts dancing to an old ABBA tune. The crowd gets really into it, and by the end of it, even Cole, Beth and referee Nick Patrick is dancing along. From Taz' microphone, something resembling sobbing can be heard...

When it's Regal's turn, he starts doing something vaguely resembling a robot dance (but which in fact is more like a drunk wobbling around). The fans laugh, but it quickly turns into a boo when Regal spins around and decks Burke with a punch, revealing that he has retrieved brass knuckles! Regal walks out, obviously proud of what he has done. Beth and Cole attend to the unconscious Burke, who must be aided out of the ring area.

- A video package then goes through the card, detailing the feud and backstory that set up the matches, ending with a vignette where RVD, Test, Lashley, Jamie Noble, William Regal and Paul London explain their desire to win the Rumble, and go on to face the WWC World Heavyweight Champion at the Saturday Night Main Event in March.

Royal Rumble 2007

Detroit, Michigan welcomes you to the 20th annual Royal Rumble! Tonight, 30 wrestlers will fight for the right to challenge the WWC World Heavyweight Champion at the Saturday Night Main Event two months from now.

The show opens with chairman Shane McMahon in the ring. Shane explains that he understands those who claim that this will be the worst Rumble ever, as WWC has far from the vast number of superstars that the WWE once had. Shane says that he will throw in a few mystery wrestlers for the fans' benefit, and that the last entrant will be someone VERY familiar, someone whose blood has been involved with wrestling for three generations. At this, the crowd starts to shout for the Rock, but Shane is adamant, and doesn't reveal anything else. Shane goes on to say that in the past, his father's method of drawing the number of entrance was having two bimbo's in his office, alternating between spinning the wheel and caressing his ego. Tonight, there would be a different spin, so to speak. A computer will randomly draw the contestants (with the exception of number 30), and they will not know of it before it turns up on a screen backstage. This way, even the wrestlers will be surprised when their name comes up.

Jamie Noble vs Gregory Helms(c) for the WWC Cruiserweight Championship

Dusty Rhodes always guarantees his clients gold within 1 year, and Jamie Noble had the opportunity here, as he challenged Gregory Helms for the Cruiserweight Championship. Noble had promised his fans to have Helms tap out, something which never had happened before in a Cruiserweight title match. Even though the fans were on Noble's side in this match, he did wrestle unsympathecially, resorting to methods such as choking and eye pokes in between more legal ways of hurting your opponents, such as a devastating swinging neckbreaker after a few minutes. Noble didn't go for the cover, instead opting to clasp on an armbar, in hopes that Kash would indeed, tap out. Helms survived the move, and came on the offensive himself, forcing Noble to eat canvas with a leg lariat only seconds later, turning the tides.

At the 12th minute mark, Noble was finally able to lock on the Dragon Sleeper. The crowd shouted for Helms to tap, but the champ reached the ropes. Noble then got up with a maniacal look on his face, before he helped Helms up, slowly pushing him up at the top turnbuckle. He then hooked Helms' arms behind his back, and came crashing down with an amazing top-rope tiger-driver. The crowd started their "holy shit" chant, and when Noble locked on the Dragon Sleeper again, Helms had no choice but to tap out.

After Noble had celebrated some with the title and Dusty Rhodes, he proclaimed that for too long, the Cruiserweight Title had been ridiculed and left to rot on Velocity and other B-Shows. For too long, the Cruiserweight Title had been meaningless, a paper title. Noble said that from now on, the Cruiserweight Title was no more. Instead, Noble was the first ever WWC Strong-Style Champion! The Strong-Style Championship had no weight limits, and could only be won by submission or KO. The crowd was unsure of how to react on this, but when Shane McMahon came out and gave it a green light, they started to cheer again. Shane also informed Noble that he would be defending his belt next Smackdown, against Gregory Helms! Guess Helms need to come up with a submission move or two..

Jamie Noble made Gregory Helms submit to the Dragon Sleeper in 0:15:49.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Jamie Noble won the WWC Cruiserweight Championship.)

Test vs Lashley in a Dog Collar Match

Time for the violent continuation (conclusion) of the violent feud between Test and Lashley. Test has since WWC's inception ridiculed the big and bulky Lashley, ever since Lashley had to cancel his first SNME appearance due to him falling down a flight of stairs at a local hotel. Later, it has been proven that it was Test that pushed him down. Now, the two would face each other in a Dog Collar Match!

The two biggest men in WWC stood face to face, inches apart, just staring at each other, before Test tried punching Lashley. Lashley blocked the right hook, giving Test a few of his own before locking him in a crushing bearhug that sapped a lot of Test's strength away. Lashley then tried to position himself for a spear, but the savvy Test yanked on the leash, causing Lashley to stumble into reach for a powerslam. Maybe Test do have a point about the big man's lack of agility...

Test pushed Lashley out of the ring, keeping him on a tight leash as he used the momentum of the chain to send Lashley crashing into the ring post. The plan backfired, as Lashley used his superior strength to whip Test OUT of the ring, crashing down on the mat. Lashley absolutely decimated Test on the outside, pounding him with his big fists, before they went back into the ring. Lashley spun Test around and around, causing the chain to tie them up together, before sending him down with a belly-to-belly for the win. Lashley rolled himself out of the tangle and unleashed the dog leash to accept the accolades from the crowd.

Dog Collar Match:
Lashley pinned Test after a belly-to-belly suplex in 0:07:04.
Rating: ** 3/4

Hart Foundation 2G (Teddy Hart & Harry Smith) vs Second City Saints (Colt Cabana & CM Punk) vs MNM (Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro)(c) for the WWC Tag Team Titles in an elimination match

One of the most intriguing tag-team feuds in recent history is about to get even hotter, as the three top teams in WWC clash together for MNM's Tag-team titles. Even though Harry Smith and Teddy Hart aren't the most renown wrestlers, even on the Indy scene, their heritage makes them instant crowd favorites. And of course, we have the mind games going on between CM Punk and the manager of MNM, Melina.

The mind games started before the match, as Melina informed referee Nick Patrick that Ace Steel didn't have a mangerial license. Steel was forced to go to the back, and Punk acknowledged Melina's tactic with a smirk. Guess it was 1-0 to Melina.

The three teams didn't bother keeping it formal, and slugged it off against each other in a big chaotic mess in the first few minutes. Not until Mercury sent Smith out of the ring with a big lariat, and Punk and Cabana tossed out Nitro and Hart did we see some resemblance of order. The Saints used this advantage to its fullest, double teaming Mercury with a series of well-synched moves.

MNM nearly eliminated the Saints when Cabana went down to the Snapshot while Melina had Punk distracted. Punk realized what was happening in time, and broke up the pin. Seems like Punk needed to find his A-game if he's gonna outsmart Melina in this one.

Even though Hart Foundation 2G was a little outshadowed by the Melina/Punk feud, they were an imposing presence on the match. Hart with his incredible agility and daring-do, and Smith, as the biggest man in the ring, with his physique and ability to press slam everyone that ran against him. He was a veritable house on fire as he gorilla slammed Mercury out of the ring, sending him crashing down upon both Saints and Nitro.

The first elimination happened when Teddy Hart brought down Cabana hard with a brain buster. Hart then pointed to the sky, and quickly mounted the turnbuckle. Quick as a cat, Melina pounced up on the apron and crotched Hart. CM Punk then got into the ring, sending Smith off the apron with a back elbow on his way to the turnbuckle. One Pepsi Plunge later, and Hart Foundation 2G was out. Guess Nick Patrick didn't much care about who's legal. But what was going on here? Did Melina and Punk cooperate? It certainly appeared so, as Punk gave Melina the thumbs up, and Melina smiled back. Mercury and Nitro was not happy about this, as they would much rather have the Saints eliminated.

The drama did not end here, as Hart Foundation 2G were fuming with anger at the elimination. When the pleas to the ref didn't work out, they scooped Melina up on Smith's broad shoulders and ran out. Melina screamed loudly for MNM to help her, but Mercury and Nitro were busy working on Cabana. Punk desperately tried to tag himself in, but also kept looking back at what happened to Melina. It looked as if the Hart's were planning on powerbombing her through a table off the stage! Punk got in the ring, slapped Nitro on the chest and probably told him to go help his girlfriend. Mercury shrugged, and Nick Patrick forced Punk to leave the ring, as no tag had been made (no tag happened when Hart was eliminated either, go figure..) Punk then took it upon himself to be the knight in the shining armor, and ran up the aisle to stop Hart and Smith what they were doing. Meanwhile, Mercury and Nitro grasped hold of an arm each, inflicting horrible amounts of pain on Cabana, forcing him to submit.

Punk had saved Melina, but to what cost? He didn't even get a 'thank you', as Melina laughed at him and went back to MNM to celebrate. Punk tried to help a an injured Cabana out of the ring, but Cabana was furious with Punk and decided to walk on his own.

Triangle Match:
MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) defeated
Hart Foundation 2G (Teddy Hart and Harry Smith) and
Second City Saints (CM Punk and Colt Cabana):
x Punk beat Teddy Hart via the Pepsi Plunge in 0:18:16
x Mercury beat Cabana via a Fujiwara armbar in 0:19:50
Rating: ***
(MNM retained the WWC Tag Team Titles.)

The Royal Rumble

Punk didn't have time to rest much at all, as he was the first entrant in the Royal Rumble, squaring off against Kid Kash. The Texan was fresh, something that couldn't be said about Punk. Still, Punk outlived both Kash and the 3rd entrant, Teddy Hart, eventully eliminating both with a double clothesline. The first elimination, however, came when OVW wrestler Chris Cage was whipped into the ropes by Kash, and Dusty Rhodes conveniently put his heavy bulk on the top rope, spilling Cage to the outside. Cage made a ruckus out of it, and Rhodes gave him a series of bionic elbows. In addition to several OVW wrestlers used to fill out the Rumble, Shane had brought in a couple of surprises, among them, the returning Ken Kennedy! Charlie Haas also made his comeback here tonight.

Punk was finally overcome when Joey Mercury hit the ring, taking Punk by surprise and hiptossing him out of the ring. Punk quickly got even when he jumped back up on the apron, holding Mercury for Elijah Burke to kick out.
Another surprise came as entrant #18 was Detroit native, Chris Sabin! According to Michael Cole, TNA had given a green light for Sabin to take part in this if WWC agreed to have Kid Kash participate in a X-Division Gauntlet Match at the upcoming TNA PPV. The wrestling world has decidely changed!

The ring clogged up about the 30 minute mark, as at least a dozen wrestlers were in the ring at the same time, vying for position. Up to this point, Kennedy was the one who'd been in the ring the longest, but that quickly changed when the pirate Burchill sent him tumbling over the port side of the ring. Elijah Burke also got one back at Regal for knocking him silly earlier, when he surprised the Brit and tossed him out.

When Test entered the ring, everyone else just moved aside and watched Test and Lashley slug it out against each other, not wanting to be caught in the middle between these two warring big guys. When Jamie Noble hit the ring as the 29th entrant, everyone in the crowd held their breath, knowing that Shane McMahon had promised the final entrant to be an extremely well-known wrestler, and that wrestling had run in the family's blood for three generations. Everyone "knew" this to be the Rock. The disappointment was therefore tangible when it turned out to be... Shane McMahon!! Well, I guess he has had wrestling in his blood for three generations.. Now who would dare do toss out the owner of WWC? Paul London tried, but was backdropped out of the Rumble for his efforts.

Up to this point, Test and Lashley had directed traffic inside of the ring, but the smaller guys decided to focus their attentions on the two big men. A coalition of Haas, Steel, Doring and RVD eliminated Lashley, while Burke surprised Test while he was laughing at the clumsy way Lashley fell out.

The final four was RVD, Shane McMahon, Jamie Noble and the OVW monster, Chris the Bambikiller! What an amazing effort by the Austrian! For some reason, Noble and Shane O'Mac found themselves standing on the ring apron, trying to punch each other down. the Bambikiller ran at them, hoping to take them both out, when both Shane and Noble jerked back on the rope, causing the OVW star to fall out. The joy was short for the two, as RVD crashed out at them with a double clothesline, sending himself into the guardrail! The footage was pretty clear though, Noble and Shane had hit the ground first. RVD is the winner of the 2007 Royal Rumble!

Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton(c) for the WWC World Heavyweight Championship

Time for the main event, and to decide who would become (or retain) the WWC World Heavyweight Title. The crowd was in great anticipation, as they feared that Mysterio would lie down for Orton, fearing for the life of his family. Orton entered the ring without his usual cockiness, seemingly concerned for the well being off his opponent's family. If Orton's entrance was subdued, Rey's was almost killed. He just walked somberly towards the ring, looking down at the ground as he slowly walked towards his shame.

Before the match, Orton told Rey that even though he didn't like Rey much, actually considered him a joke, he took no pleasure in winning like this. He then told Rey to get it over with. As Rey grudgingly laid down to be pinned, Batista appeared in the aisle, Rey's wife and kids next to him. Batista told Rey to get up and fight, as he had found and saved his family! Neither Orton or Mysterio could believe what was going on! Batista then said that the Japanese guys didn't talk a lot English, especially not after the beating he had given them, but they did tell them the name of the guy who orchestrated the kidnappings. Randy Orton! The Legend-killer was furious, and completely denied what Batista was accusing him for. This gave Rey a golden opportunity, as he had realized that the match actually was in motion. Rey quickly rolled up Orton for the quick win!

(Rey Mysterio won the WWC World Heavyweight Title

The crowd went wild, and Orton lashed out at Rey and the ref in anger. He quickly grabbed a mic, telling Rey that winning like this didn't count, and that he had nothing to do with the kidnappings. Rey said a win was a win, but that if Orton used his rematch clause right now, they could go at it again. Orton accepted, as Batista found some seats ringside for himself and Mysterio's family.

Rey Mysterio(c) vs Randy Orton for the WWC World Heavyweight Championship

With the added motivation that Orton quite possibly could be behind the kidnappings, Mysterio went to work on the former champion, hitting a dizzying array of aerial moves before dropping the dime for a two-count. Orton gained the advantage when he pushed the referee into the ropes, causing a ready and set Mysterio to crotch himself. Orton then started to dismantle Mysterio, hitting him with a powerslam and a vertical suplex. Orton even dragged Rey out of the ring, taking great pleasure in punishing Rey right in front of his family, slamming him hard to the concrete. Rey got some breathing space when Batista foiled Orton's plan of splashing Rey through a table. Batista dragged Rey off the table, causing Orton to crash through. The damage had already been done to Rey, however, and the two got back to their feet at about the same time. They started punching each other now, and Orton definetely packs a bigger punch than Rey. The two went back to the ring, where Randy put the champ in a sleeperhold. Rey was about to go down, but got his arm up after almost everyone had given up on him! Rey fought his way out of the hold, and when Orton whipped him into the ropes for the RKO, Rey ducked and hit the sitdown faceslam. Rey hit a spinning headscissors, catapulting Orton into the ropes, and, of course, followed up with the 619. Rey then looked up to the sky, slowly ascended the turnbuckle, and landed perfectly with a Frog Splash to RETAIN the title he won 20 minutes ago!

(Rey Misterio retained the WWC World Heavyweight Title)

Batista and Rey's family entered the ring to celebrate with him, as Orton slowly made his way to the back. He hadn't reached the curtains, when Shane McMahon came out with four police officers. Shane told Randy that kidnapping was a serious offense, and that the cops were here to take him away for a long, long time. Orton struggles, but in the end, the cops handcuff him and drag him away while the crowd chants "na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye" over and over, with chants of "eddie" and "619" also echoing through the Michigan crowd to end this fabolous PPV.

Card rating: ****

WWC News & Rumors:

- Randy Orton will probably be gone from WWC television for a long time, possibly to the end of his contract (October 2009), as he has seriously upset some people in the back. Word has it that both Shane McMahon and Paul Heyman detests Orton, and that they will simply have him on the payroll so he won't jump ship to WEW.

- Colt Cabana will need surgery, so CM Punk will probably continue the program with MNM on his own.

- Batista will probably not make more appearance in the near future, but expect Ken Kennedy to become an active member of the WWC roster.

- Even though several of the OVW wrestlers in the Rumble were quite impressive (Danny Doring and Chris the Bambikiller in particular), there are no current plans of bringing them up to the major leagues, just yet.

Financial notes:

I knew the Rumble would seriously threaten my bankroll with all the added expenses (wages for 30 wrestlers), and I (expectedly) lost $15,000, despite the **** card rating. I got a 0,2 PPV buyrate, but have really no idea how good that is (never been much into buyrates..)

Final note:
How's it working out for you guys with the news & rumors stuff? Breaking kayfabe too much?

Snabbit888Posted on 05/08/06 at 18:34:33

William Regal in a dance-off is the finest angle ever.  I applaud you for making me mark out hardcore.

Good match with Noble and Helms, right man went over.  Not sure if I like the Strong-Style idea, but I'll see what you do with it first.

Lashley HAD to beat Test.  Just had to.  I'm glad he did.

MNM need to be tag champs wherever they go, because they rule that hard.  Good match, nice finishes.  Yay MNM!

Not the best Rumble I've ever seen, but with the WWC talent pool and the way you're planning that all out, it worked well.  My only beef is that it was pretty obvious no one was beating RVD near the end there, but that's the nature of TNM Rumbles sometimes.  Overall, not bad though.

The kidnap angle was a little over the top, but not so much that it didn't work.  Not a good night for Orton for sure, as not only does he lose to Mysterio TWICE, but then he gets suspended indefinitely.  Let's see if WWC Orton can change his ways.

And I like the news and rumors stuff.  Just might be nice if you added it to a different post so it's not directly attached to your kayfabe stuff.  Good show though.
MatteusPosted on 05/08/06 at 19:34:04

Yay! Noble wins! I like the Strong Style idea, personally. It may limit the number of competitors for the title, which is my one concern, but it's something different. And I always like when someone tries something different. Kudos.

Yeah, Lashley rocked him. He definetely had to win that. Good blow-off match for a surprisingly good feud.

Oooo, that Melina. She's a smart temptress, she is. That's a shame Cabana's gonna be out awhile. Maybe CM can find himself a new partner?

Aaaah, Shane as the bait-and-switch. That's a bummer, but cool to see RVD, Noble (the Strong champ) and the big Austrian dude in there at the end. Kind of a surprise (the finalists, not the winner), but it works. RVD was one of the few people I'd have bought winning the match, so that's good for now.

Interesting twist to the Rey-Orton angle with the kidnapping. I didn't think Orton'd done it, and I'm still unsure, but his being dragged off after the event ad suspended kills off the feud I suppose. But who were the Japanese guys anyway? Hope we find out. I buy Rey as champ in WWC. Good job invoking the rematch clause right afterwards, before the suspension.

Good card, Rey! I'm loving it more and more!

-Nice picup and win for Noble!

-No surprise to me that Lashley pumbled him.

-AH! MNM wins... i was pushing for The Hart Foundation, but I cant expect a quick push like that to happen. Hopefully Cobana will be good so they can continue a feud.

-ROB VAN DAM wins! I like it, and good job on the well written Royal Rumble.

-Very nice twist to the rematch clause. Eventhough I hate Rey, you are doing a good job potraying him witha positive image, and I was actually rooting for him during the match.

-The news and rumours section is a great add tothe end of an event. I love it. The finance, eh. I haven been a finance person too much.

-Awesome work, keep it UP! You got me as a reader.
rey619Posted on 05/09/06 at 08:17:40

I agree that the Rumble wasn't the best, but my only regrets were probably that I didn't keep Test and Lashley inside for longer. Even so, I wouldn't buy anyone else BUT RVD winning the Rumble. That's one of my biggest challenges, the main event scene. With Orton out, I really only have two main eventers (Rey and RVD), and need to elevate a few more.

I thought about letting Punk continue with Ace Steel, but I want Punk to garner some heat with a 3 month singles run. He has been injured for so long that he hasn't gathered any significant heat yet. Besides, I love the program he's doing with MNM.

The Test/Lashley match was actually the only unbooked match.. in hindsight I probably should have booked it, but it turned out well in the end.

Kidnapping angle.. well.. I wanted to give Rey some added incentive in this angle, and didn't want to use Eddie's death more than I'd already did (remember, at this time, Eddie's been dead for over a year). In the end, it worked out well, but check out the following Smackdown where I'll tie up a few loose ends (like who the Japanese guys were).
