WWC Smackdown - 01.05.06

rey619Posted on 04/18/06 at 20:41:29

After an 8 month hiatus, Smackdown! is finally back on UPN, taped before an enthusiastic crowd of 1500 in Des Moines, Iowa. Shane McMahon comes out to the cheers of the crowd, and thanks everyone for supporting WWC in this difficult time. Shane says he has some disturbing footage to show, as the big screen lights up.

We see Rey Mysterio in a dark graveyard, the date is Christmas Eve. He is obviously visiting the grave of Eddie Guerrero, as he talks solemnly to his late friend, and asks him for support from above in his Royal Rumble title match against Randy Orton. All of a sudden, someone attacks Rey from behind, clubbing him down in the snow. It's Randy Orton, and he's pissed off. He takes Rey down with the RKO, catching Rey's jaw at Eddie's tombstone. Randy disappears, leaving Rey bleeding from his mouth.

The screen goes black again, and Shane calls out Randy Orton to explain himself. Randy comes out, full of himself and his actions. Randy says that his methods are no worse than the ones he and Vince used against Shawn Michaels last year, and if he punishes him for this, then he is a hypocrite. Instead, Orton tells him to find a new top contender, since Rey obviously won't be in any shape to fight at the Rumble.

Rey's music plays, and the top contender comes in along with RVD. Rey is wearing a new mask, but this one is for medical reasons, protecting his jaw. RVD takes the mic, saying that Rey needs to let his jaw rest for a while, but that he will be ready for the Rumble. RVD then tells Orton that even if he wasn't as close to Eddie as Rey was, Orton still crossed a line he didn't want to cross. RVD challenged Orton to a non-title match tonight, and Shane sanctioned the match.

Brian Kendrick & Paul London vs Second City Saints (Ace Steel & Colt Cabana)

Flurry of offense from Kendrick on Steel as the bell rung, superkicking him out of the ring to end the barrage. Kendrick slid after him, but was caught and spinebustered on the outside. Ace Steel really seems like a tough SOB, taking out Paul London with a series of headbutts and a Northern Lights for a near fall. Still, it was Colt Cabana that got the crowd going with his comedy routine, slapping both Kendrick and London on their backsides before ducking an uncoming clothesline attempt, causing them to crash together. London went after Cabana with the Running Forearm Smash, but "Classic" ducked and nailed him with a rana when he bounced off the ropes, winning the match for the Second City Saints.

After shaking hands with London and Kendrick, the trio celebrated in the ring, until Teddy Hart and Harry Smith came out. Teddy said that the Saints were a fine team, no doubt about that. They still couldn't take out MNM, a feat which Hart Foundation 2G should accomplish tonight.

Jamie Noble vs Elijah Burke

Michael Cole expressed his admiration for Elijah Burke before this match, to which Taz replied: "It figures." Cole kept nagging Taz what he meant about that, but the former ECW World Champ kept the clueless Cole in the dark.

Noble really needed this victory after his defeats at the hand of Rey and RVD, and went straight to work at Burke, using several closed fists to pummel him to the ground. Test came out and joined the announcers at this point, informing them that he had challenged Lashley to an arm wrestling contest later tonight. Cole wanted to know if that was a smart move, as Lashley was probably the strongest guy in WWC.

Even though this banter took the focus off the match somewhat, Burke was finally able to mount a comeback, dropping Noble with a flying shoulderblock to get the crowd going. Burke took down Jamie with a DDT, and planted him with the Elijah Experience faceslam. 1...2... Test pulls the referee out of the ring! (For those of you haven't read the reports, Burke upset Test at a live event last month, with a little help from Lashley). As Burke went for Test, Noble recovered and took down Burke from behind with the Dragon Sleeper and the win. Awesome match!

As Test retreated to the back, Lashley came out to confront him. Test escaped through the crowd, and Lashley officially accepted his challenge to an arm wrestling contest. Back in the ring, Jamie Noble told Gregory Helms that at the Royal Rumble, he would do something no other cruiserweight had ever done. He would win the title by having Helms tap out!

Josh Matthews tried to get a response from Gregory Helms on what he thought about Noble's statement, or what his thoughts were in this non-title match with Rey Mysterio. Helms tried to formulate an answer a couple of times, but just gave up and left for the ring. Matthews said that Helms probably had a lot on his mind now.

Gregory Helms vs Rey Mysterio

Former Cruiserweight Champion to go one-on-one with the current champ here tonight. Rey obviously still upset by Orton's Christmas attack on him, as Helms was able to dominate the top contender in the opening minutes of the match.

Rey was beat from pillar to post by the CW champ, until the masked luchadore managed to send Helms tumbling with a headscissors, and dropped him out of the ring with a backdrop. Rey springboarded out after him with a plancha, earning a standing ovation from the crowd. The crowd had barely taken their seat when Helms was dropped on his head with a rana on the outside by Rey who had really gotten his momentum back. Back in the ring, Rey targetted the champs knees with a series of dropkicks, before catching him out of nowhere with the... RKO! Rey wins using Randy Orton's finisher!

Good Times, Great Memories

Colt Cabana hosts his talkshow, Good Times, Great Memories in the back, just like in RoH. His two guest tonight are Melina and CM Punk. They are sitting on opposite sides of Cabana, their heads turned away from each other. Cabana asks the questions everyone have been dying to know. If there's something between them? Melina freaks out, saying that she would rather be with a slug, while Punk said the only thing between them was bad blood. Cabana then says that there MIGHT be someone hidden behind the door (Ricki Lake rip-off), that had something to say about this, Melina's boyfriend Johnny Nitro!

Nitro comes out, wondering what he's doing here. Cabana says Punk and Melina have a relationship, but they deny it. Nitro says he believes them. Cabana then says that the surprises doesn't stop HERE, at Good Times, Great Memories! Cause behind the DOOR... is... Punk's girlfirend Maria Kanellis! Cabana says he is bad, but he can't help it. He asks Maria how she feels of the situation, but she gives Punk a hug and tells him she's missed him. Punk and Maria leaves hand in hand, and Cabana says that they're probably gonna work out their problems. The last shot of the camera shows Melina giving Maria and Punk the evil eye...

Hart Foundation 2G (Teddy Hart & Harry Smith) vs MNM(c) (Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro w/Melina) for the WWC Tag Team Championships

Could MNM's dominance in the tag division be at an end here tonight by the hands of the Hart Foundation 2G? Melina looked confident as she strutted her way down the aisle, and almost gave Taz a heart attack when she entered the ring. Taz made a "Basic Instinct" reference, to which Cole replied "You wish." Ever the joker, Taz quipped back "Well, you surely wouldn't." Cole didn't take the hint this time either.

CM Punk came down to the ring before the match, and told both teams that the Saints were still in title contention. As soon as he was medically fit to wrestle, they would get their title shot, against one of the teams. Smith and Hart mouthed off to Punk, allowing MNM to low-blow them from behind to gain the advantage in the match. Was Punk trying to help out MNM? Or was it just an unfortunate coincidence?

Hart and Smith had obviously trained a lot together in the Hart Dungeon, as their teamwork was smooth and flawless, and always brought a load of pain to either Mercury or Nitro. Smith would take Nitro down with a stunning superplex, and Hart sommersaulted at him with a senton. Brilliant big man-high flyer combo work.

Melina continually tried to interfere, but Punk was there, stopping MNM's manager. The two of them got into a verbal confrontation, and Melina even slapped Punk. Punk slapped her back. Really hard. Colt Cabana came out to separate the quarreling duo. At this point, Hart Foundation were in control, and Hart had climbed the turnbuckle, looking for some crazy flip to finish off Nitro. All of a sudden, Cabana jumped up on the apron and crotched Hart, causing the DQ.

MNM and the Saints retread back up the aisle, and Melina told the Hart's that they had made a deal with Punk and Cabana. Make sure MNM retained tonight, and they would get a shot at the Royal Rumble. Melina said that they just got punk'd. CM Punk grabbed the mic and told Melina that *he* was the one doing the punking around here. With one swift motion he unzipped Melina's skirt, letting it drop to the floor. Melina tried to slap Punk, but stumbled in her skirt and took down both Nitro and Mercury in the chaos. Punk said THAT was being punk'd!

Test vs Lashley in an Arm-wrestling contest

While the table was set up, Cole and Taz informed us that Shane McMahon had decided that at the Royal Rumble, BOTH Second City Saints and Hart Foundation 2G would challenge for the titles in a 3-way dance.

Test and Lashley sat down, and everybody knew Test would be seriously outmatched in this one. Just as the contest was about to start, Test threw powder in Lashley's eyes and shoved the table into his abdomen. He then planted Lashley with the Test Drive, and then slammed his hand down to the mat, "winning" the contest. Lashley didn't seem to happy about it when he regained his bearings.

Rob van Dam vs Randy Orton in a non-title match

Main event time, as RVD sticks up for Rey Mysterio and wants to punish Randy for attacking Rey on Christmas Eve visiting Eddie Guerrero's grave. Randy was obviously angry when walking out to face RVD, probably because Rey had the audacity to use HIS finisher earlier when he defeated Gregory Helms.

RVD and Orton started out doing a test of strength, with Orton coming out on top and taking Van Dam down with a suplex. Orton tried to sap RVD's strength by choking him in the ropes, earning the ire of head referee Nick Patrick. While Patrick was giving Orton warnings, RVD struck back with a flurry of kicks, ending with a corkscrew legdrop for a 2 count. He then went out for a chair, but it backfired as Orton dropkicked the chair in his face and went on the offense again, dropping him with a DDT for a near fall. Orton hit the RKO, but as on SNME last month, it was way too close to the ropes. Orton must be cursing himself for not maintaining his ring presence on the Indy circuit during Smackdown's long absence.

The end came when RVD went for a discus lariat. Orton ducked and tangled RVD up in a backslide, using the ropes as leverage as he pinned Van Dam. Orton then took RVD down with the RKO for good measure, telling Mysterio that THIS was they way it was done. Rey then came out and challenged Orton (Rey was in obvious pain when he spoke) to a tag-team match next week. Rey Mysterio & RVD against Randy Orton and a partner of his choice. Not that he had any friends in WWC anyway, but if he managed to coax someone to partner with him, Rey and RVD would gladly kick their asses in the ring.

Excellent main event!

Financial notes:
Well, this was my first TV-show, so I was excited to see what kind of rating I garnered... a 0,6, not too bad for a first show I reckoned. I lost almost  10 grand though.. need to turn this around soon..

Nice... love the opening of the show. If we're gonna use Eddie's death, then dammit let's make it kick ass! Uh oh.. RVD's somebody' mouthpiece? ??? Everybody take a shot whenever he says "cool"!

Bah, I already miss Punk in the ring. Nice match though, and I still love The Hart Foundation 2G even though I'm not a Teddy Hart fan.

Okay, so Eljah Burke is playing a G-H-E-Y character methinks? Damn... I said "I love Elijah Burke" last card. Ouch. Still, I loves me some Jamie Noble (heh, Matteus is such a queer) and I LOVE using stuff that happened in house shows in your storylines. Doesn't help fans much, but it def makes me want to pay more attention to house shows ;)

Gregory's just paying speechless homage to the the Broken Jawed Masked Midget. And Rey finishes with the RKO! Buuuuurn!!

Good segment with Cabana and co. The first... oh, seven times I read that paragraph I thought you were saying Maria was Melina's girlfriend. I'm thinking this is even more interesting than I expected! Melina and CM sitting in a tree... K-I-S-...

Money's on the champs to retain... and they do! Interesting logic on the Saints' interference, makes them cool tweeners sort of. And CM gets the last word in excellent fashion. PS - Melina's freakin' sweet. Side note.

Test is a bad, bad man. This segment didn't do much more for me, though I already wanted to see the match at the Rumble. But it's pretty basic Sports Entertainment stuff, so I got no beef. Although I do love that he slammed his hand to the mat just to show that he'd won... silly Canadien.

Randy should've said "That's how it's done... cunt!" But alas, an opportunity wasted. Yeah, the right guy went over and I'm still lookin' forward to the title match at the Rumble.

Tough break on the financial side... I'll still read even if you declare Chapter 7 ;)

Just selling his injury and building on the fact that RVD and Rey Rey are top babyface allies here. Rey is better than RVD on the mic.

Bah, I already miss Punk in the ring. Nice match though, and I still love The Hart Foundation 2G even though I'm not a Teddy Hart fan.
Me too.. damn that injury.. the problem is he doesn't generate any heat, even if he wreaks havoc out of the ring. For one reason or another I almost always use Teddy Hart in my circuits, even though I've only seen him in two matches at the TNA X-Cup a few years back. It must be his lineage that does it.. and the fact that he is an asshole in real life. Still, the casuals probably doesn't know about that, they'll mark out just for him being a Hart.

Burke is definetely a flamboyant character. Someone who dances to YMCA in a wrestling ring will probably be branded a gay, just as Taz has done in WWC. Is he really gay? Time will tell.

I figured it was best to bring Cabana to the center for once, and Good Times Great Memories was the perfect place to do it. I can understand that the paragraph was confusing. The segment would probably have been better with a standard writeup with direct speech in " ", but it had been a hell of a lot longer, and long write-ups doesn't necessarily draw a bigger audience.

A lot of my wrestlers are actually tweeners. Jamie Noble as well. He acts heelish against Rey and RVD, but definetely plays the face in the feud with Gregory Helms. It's also a testament to the fact that the Smackdown brand / WWC is more like a big indy fed, and the face/heel lines are more blurred there.

The funny thing is, I had planned on making Test the face in this one, and Lashley the heel.. but then Lashley no-showed the first event, and things got a little twist. I could probably have done a longer segment for better effect, I know.

Randy should've said "That's how it's done... cunt!" But alas, an opportunity wasted. Yeah, the right guy went over and I'm still lookin' forward to the title match at the Rumble.
Fortunately for Randy, there aren't that many girls backstage in WWC (except for Melina, and she has enough troubles with Punk). Yeah, I'm excited about the main event at the Rumble as well. Be ready for a few surprise twists in this feud..

Tough break on the financial side... I'll still read even if you declare Chapter 7 ;)
Ryan has promised me that I should be getting positive results by the 15th card... hehe..
