[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/16/05

Snabbit888Posted on 03/10/06 at 00:00:38

Mayhem is in the books, and the path is now leading straight to Los Angeles, California and the biggest event of the year, Super Cade II! After the pay-per-view 24 hours ago, we know of three matches already signed for Super Cade, but we know many more are to follow as we go on the road to Los Angeles, our first stop being at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's card, the Television Title will be on the line as CM Punk defends against the rookie sensation Ken Doane! Also on tonight's broadcast, in tag team action, Abyss and The Hurricane, who came so close to winning the World Tag Team Titles at Mayhem, square off against Elix Skipper and Low-Ki! Plus, Lance Storm will be the special guest on this week's edition of Palumbo's Pizza Place! And in our main event, Steve Bradley came back in a big way last night by decimating Chris Benoit. He will be in action against the number-one contender, Brock Lesnar! All that and more on Explosion!

KURT ANGLE AND BROCK LESNAR HAVE THEIR FIRST REAL CONFRONTATION
The show kicked off with the World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle coming out for an interview, and surprisingly, he was alone. Angle started by congratulating himself on a successful title defense against Chris Benoit, saying that it was "no problem." Of course he failed to mention that a primary reason why Benoit tapped when he did was in an effort to protect his wife from Steve Bradley who was stalking her at ringside. Talk inevitably turned to what a great and wonderful World Heavyweight champion he was and how "nobody wants to see anyone other than me hold this title." The crowd booed at this, and booed even more so when Angle specifically named Brock Lesnar as someone who shouldn't be holding the World Title. Angle ran down a list of reasons why he was going to have no troubles in defeating Lesnar at Super Cade. To name a few: Angle was an Olympic gold medal winner whereas Lesnar was "only" a national collegiate champion, Lesnar has weak ribs and thus wouldn't be able to withstand the Ankle Lock (it didn't make any sense to me either), and that Angle was a "more attractive individual" than Lesnar was. Angle was posturing around the ring like he owned the place until BROCK LESNAR's music kicked in and the Monster From Minnesota made his way down to the ring. Angle was doing his best to hide the fact that he was a bit intimidated, but he stood firm in the ring as Lesnar talked. "Don't be nervous, Kurt. I'm not here to fight you. Our fight will come June 19th at Super Cade II. You see, Kurt, I'm not like you. I WANT you to be 100% at Super Cade. I don't need to hire someone to take you out. And you want to know why, Kurt? Because *I* am going to take you out. I want to make you suffer. I want to feel your bones crack in my hands. I want to spill your blood for the world to see." As Lesnar rattled off his threats, Angle became more and more uncomfortable until he fired back with a sense of false bravado. "I'm not scared of you, Brock. I'm an Olympic champion. Something you will never be. And I am the World Heavyweight champion, something else you will NEVER be. The ball is in my court, Brock. You're trying to get into my head? You can't phase me! As a matter of fact, let's not wait until Super Cade. Let's do this RIGHT NOW!" Lesnar got in the position to fight, but instead turned around and started walking out of the ring in an obvious show of mind games. Angle didn't like this "act of disrespect" as he called it and charged at Lesnar. Lesnar saw it coming though, sidestepped and tossed Angle over the top to the floor. Round one looks to have gone to the challenger.

Match #1
Petey Williams vs. Jeff Hardy (w/ Daffney & Lita)
Our opening contest pitted Petey Williams, who is now going at it solo, taking on the prophecy's Jeff Hardy. Hardy was accompanied by both Daffney and Lita, who turned on her boyfriend and Jeff's brother Matt Hardy at Mayhem for a reason she has yet to explain. This was Petey's first real delving into singles wrestling in GCW, and he looked good against the self-proclaimed "Charismatic Enigma." Petey is relatively new to the game though, and despite putting up a good fight, fell prey to a flying cross body press from Jeff Hardy.

Jeff Hardy pinned Petey Williams after a flying cross body press in 0:07:02.
Rating: *** 1/4

After the match there was a commotion in the aisle as MATT HARDY was walking to the ring with purpose, wanting to get his hands on Jeff Hardy (or maybe even Lita for all we know). However, he was cut off by the GCW Official Brigade, not wanting to see what Matt Hardy would do in such a tumultuous state of mind. We all are looking for answers, but nobody more so than Matt Hardy.

Match #2
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Stevie Richards (DEBUT!!!)
We next saw the GCW debut of Stevie Richards, who has a vast resume' and should be a great addition to our ranks. Unfortunately the man he had to debut against is the red hot and highly motivated former World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho, who is coming off a big victory against Randy Orton last night at Mayhem. Richards tried to jump Jericho before the bell to get the advantage, but that backfired in a big way when Y2J saw it coming and ushered Richards into the turnbuckle. From there Jericho completely dominated the match, and because he doesn't get paid by the hour quickly locked on the Walls of Jericho. It didn't take long for Stevie to tap out and this one was over.

Chris Jericho made Stevie Richards submit to the Walls of Jericho in 0:01:34.
Rating: **

Not the way Stevie Richards was looking to make his debut, I'm sure. This was the exact type of match that Jericho needed to wrestle as he is still undoubtedly sore from the no disqualification match with Randy Orton.

RANDY ORTON HAS A CHALLENGE FOR CHRIS JERICHO
Speaking of Randy Orton, as Jericho was celebrating his win, Orton came out to the top of the stage with his father Bob Orton Jr. and a microphone in hand. Orton surprised us by first congratulating Jericho for beating him last night, citing he was the better man. Orton continued by saying that this now puts them at one win a piece, and that the better man in this rivalry has yet to be decided. Orton suggested one more match, and for that match to take place at the biggest stage of all, Super Cade. Jericho was all for it, accepting Orton's challenge and setting up their third clash in the ring. At this point, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer came out and added a little something to this match, saying that a match of this caliber should be special. He said that he wanted to make absolutely sure there was no dispute over this third and feud deciding third match, so he announced that the match at Super Cade would be a cage match. But not any ordinary cage match, because for the first time in GCW history, it would be HELL IN A CELL! The crowd popped huge at this announcement, knowing how brutal these matches can become. Jericho looked a bit nervous about this announcement while Orton showed his displeasure with far more animation, screaming at Dreamer. Super Cade continues to get bigger and bigger!

Match #3
Matt Hardy vs. "The Gore Machine" Rhyno
We had already seen Matt Hardy once tonight trying to get his hands on Jeff Hardy in his match. Matt Hardy is an emotional guy, no doubt about it, and often times it works to his benefit. However, he was going to have to keep his emotions in check and not worry about the problems with his brother and Lita if he was going to survive his opponent tonight, the Gore Machine Rhyno. Hardy came into this match with the thought of taking Rhyno off guard and going full blast at him, trying to punch before he could be punched. To a certain extent, harnessing his emotion in this way was effective, but you can't do this from bell-to-bell against a guy as dangerous as Rhyno. Rhyno was able to catch Hardy with a running power bomb out of the corner when Hardy mounted the turnbuckle for a 10-count punch. Rhyno then went to work, making Hardy pay for his aggressive style. The tide would turn though as Rhyno stepped out of his ability level a bit and went for a legdrop from the second turnbuckle, but Hardy got out of the way. Hardy got his second wind, catching the Man Beast with a couple of dropkicks and bringing him down with the Side Effect for a nearfall. At this point, LITA mosied out from the back, catching Hardy's attention as she mockingly blew kisses at him. Matt took his focus off of Rhyno and put it on Lita, which turned out to be his fatal mistake. When he finally went back to the task at hand, Rhyno almost split him in half with the Gore.

Rhyno pinned Matt Hardy with the Gore in 0:07:03.
Rating: ** 1/2

Just as she came out, Lita left quite content with what she had just done. This is such a sudden change in Lita, and it looks like she's going to do everything in her power to make her ex-boyfriend's life hell.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - LANCE STORM
The guest on this week's edition of Palumbo's Pizza Place was Lance Storm, who came out with his injured shoulder heavily taped. Storm didn't get a chance to speak much as Chuck Palumbo was suffering from a prolonged spell of being ridiculous, dancing around, hammering home his Italian Stallion stereotype, and making a general fool of himself. When Palumbo finally shifted to being more serious, he pointed out Storm's taped shoulder, reminding Storm that he hasn't looked too impressive since making his return from the injury. Palumbo suddenly had a realization, remembering that it was in a match against him that Lance Storm originally suffered the injury, and it was because of the Italian Stallion that Storm had to forfeit the North American Title and spent 7 months at home rehabbing his injury. While Palumbo was carefree in his explanations of this, Storm was becoming more and more irritated, finally snapping, grabbing the mic from Palumbo, and challenging him to a match on the spot. Palumbo was unphased though, smiling and laughing as he accepted, saying, "Maybe you'll get hurt again!"

Match #4
Lance Storm vs. "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo
I don't think Chuck Palumbo did it on purpose, but he certainly raised the ire of Lance Storm tonight, and he paid the price for it. Storm was hurting, there's no doubting that, but he went into a different zone and blocked the pain out as he hardly let Palumbo get so much as a good punch in. After Storm almost knocked Palumbo's teeth out with a superkick, I think Palumbo finally understood that pissing Storm off might not have been in his best interest. The Maple Leaf was next and it didn't take long for Palumbo to tap out.

Lance Storm made Chuck Palumbo submit to the Maple Leaf in 0:03:16.
Rating: **

After the match when the adrenaline died down a bit, Storm clutched his shoulder yet again as it flared up again. Storm might have to bite the bullet and take a little bit more time off or risk suffering irreparable damage to that shoulder. Never the less, an impressive win for the man from Calgary.

JBL AND THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM TRY TO GET OUT OF THEIR SUPER CADE MATCHES
We cut back to the office of Commissioner Tommy Dreamer and see him with John Bradshaw Layfield. JBL is doing his best to get out of the match with Abyss at Super Cade, trying to say that Shaniqua didn't have the power to sign him for that match. Dreamer corrected JBL and let him know that when the contract was drawn up, Shaniqua did have the power to sign him into it. JBL threatened to just no-show Super Cade rather than wrestle Abyss. Dreamer gave him permission to do that, but informed JBL that if he didn't show up at Super Cade, he shouldn't bother showing up after that because he would be fired. Before Dreamer could kick JBL out of his office, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, the World Tag Team champions, stormed in with a similar complaint, not wanting to face Booker T and Goldust at Super Cade. As all three of the cowardly heels talked over one another at Dreamer, the Commish finally had enough, slammed his hands down on the desk and told the three snakes that not only are the matches at Super Cade happening, but next week on Explosion, JBL and the WGTT will team up for a six-man tag team match against Abyss, Booker T, and Goldust!

Match #5
Television Title Match
CM Punk (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane
CM Punk is cold and he is calculating, and that was apparent tonight as he put his Television Title on the line against "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane. Punk always has a plan, and his plan wasn't to pin Doane or make him submit. Doane was amped up and came out a ball of fire, but Punk got back on the advantage with a well-placed DDT. Punk dished out more punishment before he made an odd motion to the back. After a slight pause, out came SEAN O'HAIRE (completely with bandages on his burned face) and JEFF HARDY, Punk's underlings. Showing no regard for referee JD Sanders' warnings, O'Haire and Hardy entered the ring and started pounding on Doane. Sanders called for the bell and intervened, but he was greeted with a hard right hand from O'Haire for his troubles.

Ken Doane defeated CM Punk by disqualification in 0:04:26.
Rating: ***
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

O'Haire and Jeff Hardy continued to destroy Doane as Punk grabbed something from his tights. Daffney was clutching the Television Title and laughing with delight as we realized what Punk was planning to do. He pulled out a book of matches which was confusing until we saw Jeff Hardy go outside and pull out a can of gas from under the ring. Oh my God, Punk was going to light Ken Doane on fire! As Hardy was about to start pouring the gasoline on the Teen Phenom, MONTY BROWN came sprinting to the ring! Brown floored Hardy with a clothesline, grabbed the gas can that he just dropped, and used it to waffle O'Haire with! Brown took a swing at Punk, but Punk got himself out of harm's way. Brown turned back once more only to be maced by Daffney! As Brown clutched at his eyes, Punk nailed him with a low blow, grabbed the Television Title and knocked the Alpha Male silly. Punk called for the gas can again, but the GCW Official Brigade ran in and broke this up before it got any worse. We all know that CM Punk is out there in some of his methods, but this was over the line. All reports indicate that Brown was angry before, but now he is completely enraged and is ready to rip Punk's head off.

SHAWN MICHAELS IS BACK!
"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels made a surprise return to Global Championship Wrestling last night, revealing himself as Black Tiger. HBK came out for an interview segment tonight. HBK started by saying that physically, he probably shouldn't be here. "I'm old, I'm hurt, I'm tired." But he said he didn't want to go out with the last thing people remembering about him being Eddie Guerrero taking him out with a sledgehammer. He continued by saying he's here with one thing and one thing only on his mind: REVENGE. HBK went on to reveal that back on March 7 when someone attacked Latino Heat in the back and Eddie accused Randy Orton, that it was actually him. "I have one more match in me, Eddie Guerrero, and it's going to be against you!" The challenge is officially on the table, but will Eddie Guerrero accept it?

Match #6
The Hurricane/Abyss vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki
The Hurricane and Abyss were ever so close to taking the World Tag Team Titles at Mayhem. They did everything right in the match except for get the final pinfall. They were in action again tonight against the team with the rockiest relationship in GCW these days, the former World Tag Team champions Elix Skipper and Low-Ki. To Low-Ki's credit, he is doing everything in his power to get back on the same page as Skipper, but Primetime is being reluctant to say the least. Skipper has found himself firmly in the middle of a losing streak, and he is desperate to get himself out of it. That is commendable, except for the fact that he isn't being a team player because he wants to do everything himself. After a couple of minutes of Abyss bouncing his head off the mat like a basketball, Skipper finally reconsidered his stance a bit and started to showcase some of the teamwork with Low-Ki that made them tag champs in the first place. The match raged on, and it was a barn burner from bell-to-bell. Late in the match while The Hurricane was in the ring with Low-Ki, JBL's limo driver Lamont interjected himself into the action, coming down to get Abyss' attention (note that Lamont looked scared out of his mind to be doing this). Abyss dropped to the floor and was actually laughing at Lamont as Lamont put his dukes up. Abyss was almost amused by this until Lamont did the stupidest thing he could ever do and slapped Abyss. The monster's jovial mood quickly took a turn as he chased Lamont up the ramp, who may or may not have had an accident (the smell was inconclusive). As Abyss got to the curtain at the top of the ramp that Lamont had just disappeared into, he was floored when JBL surprised him with the Stock Market Crash! This showed just what kind of power JBL is packing as no one has been able to do anything like that to Abyss since he's been in GCW. Back in the ring, The Hurricane had witnessed this and was distracted, allowing Low-Ki to hit the Ki Krusher and pick up the win.

Elix Skipper and Low-Ki defeated Abyss and The Hurricane when Low-Ki pinned Hurricane with the Ki Krusher in 0:10:57.
Rating: *** 1/2

After the fall, Elix Skipper ran in and covered The Hurricane as well, demanding that Petey Pluck make the count again. Pluck did so with a look of bewilderment on his face. Skipper jumped up and screamed, "THE LOSING STREAK IS OVER!" and celebrated like he had just won the World Heavyweight Title. Low-Ki thought about correcting Skipper and reminding him that he had won the match, but he figured it'll be easier to deal with Skipper if he just lets him have this one and shook Skipper's hand. Hopefully this "win" for Elix Skipper will get him back on track. Meanwhile, The Hurricane went up the ramp to check on Abyss, who slowly got back to his feet. After regaining his bearings, Abyss let out a huge roar before going in search of JBL.

FRANKIE KAZARIAN CHALLENGES REY MYSTERIO JR.
Cruiserweight champion Frankie "The Future" Kazarian was standing in the ring when he returned from commercial break. He was out to issue a challenge to Rey Mysterio Jr. for a match right there on the spot. "You had no business being in the six-man tag team match at Mayhem, Mysterio. So get your ass down here so I can kick it!" It didn't take long for Rey Mysterio to answer the challenge and we had ourselves an impromptu Cruiserweight Title match.

Match #7
Cruiserweight Title Match
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
Rey Mysterio Jr. is a former Cruiserweight champion, and he jumped at the chance to answer Frankie Kazarian's challenge for this title match. As the match got going, this was starting to look like it was a trap as it didn't take long for RED and KID KASH to come to ringside. They must have sensed that this was coming as PAUL LONDON and AJ STYLES soon followed, and the ringside area was quickly becoming crowded. As the war in the ring continued, the tension on the floor could be cut with a knife. In the closing moments of this match, Kazarian tossed Mysterio to the floor. Kid Kash went over and caught Mysterio with a cheap kick to the midsection, which led to London and Styles going after him and Red. Before they got to Red though, he was able to slide the Cruiserweight Title into the ring. Referee Antonio Santangelo went out to try to break up the scuffle on the floor, which caused him not to see Kazarian whack Mysterio upside the head with the title belt. He did, however, see Kazarian make the cover, and the trap had worked. Mysterio was knocked out and Frankie Kazarian was still the Cruiserweight champion.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. after hitting him with the title belt in 0:12:46.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Frankie Kazarian retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

Kazarian and company got out of there in a hurry, the damage having been done. London and Styles jumped in the ring to check on Mysterio, who was woozy, but all right.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar vs. Steve Bradley
Our main event promised to be a brutal affair as Brock Lesnar took on Team Angle's enforcer Steve Bradley. This was Bradley's first match back since being released from prison recently, and he was sent by World champion Kurt Angle to make sure that Lesnar doesn't make it to Super Cade. Though both Lesnar and Bradley have a substantial amount of technical wrestling skills, make no bones about it - this was a brawl. Head referee Jimmy Appleseed was giving these two a lot of leeway as he understood the magnitude of this match. The countout rule seemed to be thrown out the window as these two made good use of the ringside area, even brawling into the crowd at one point after Lesnar smashed Bradley THROUGH the ring barrier. Bradley didn't show much ring rust as he took Lesnar to the limit. After a bruising battle, Bradley was away to escape two F-5 attempts but couldn't escape a third as he was dropped and pinned 1-2-3.

Brock Lesnar pinned Steve Bradley with the F-5 in 0:15:57.
Rating: ****

Both men remained on the mat due to exhaustion as this truly was a vicious match. With Bradley still laid out, CHRIS BENOIT ran in, and although he was still banged up from last night, he climbed to the top and hit Bradley's prone body with a swandive headbutt! The crowd was on its feet cheering as Benoit showed the Rabid Wolverine side of himself by ripping into Bradley, busting him open with hard right hands. Benoit was a man possessed as he tore into Bradley. The GCW Official Brigade came in to get Benoit away, but Benoit nailed each of them as they got into the ring, surely earning him some fines in the process. KURT ANGLE himself ran down sensing that Benoit was going to kill Bradley and locked him in a waistlock and pulled him away until officials could restrain him. After the Crippler was being taken to the back, Angle took a couple of steps backward and bumped into Brock Lesnar who was now on his feet! Angle turned around and was nose to nose with his opponent at Super Cade. The show went off the air with these two combatants engaged in a staredown.

Super Cade II promises to be the biggest show of 2006 and the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California is sold out! If you want to see all the great action, you'll have to tune in on June 19th on pay-per-view! The road to Super Cade is long, but we already have four matches signed for the biggest pay-per-view spectacular of the year.

World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

World Tag Team Title Match - The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. Booker T/Goldust

Hell in a Cell - "Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton

Abyss vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

Those four matches are reason enough to order this show, but more matches will be announced in the coming weeks! See you next week!

Super Cade II!
Why'd ya name a PPV after Lance? :)
Snabbit888Posted on 03/10/06 at 05:20:54

Because as a GCW developmental wrestler, he has had the same impact on the wrestling world as the Four Horsemen and the nWo!

And you've been following my hundreds of feds long enough to know I always use that name, silly Carp.
