NWA World Championship Wrestling
Date: April 6, 1985
Location: Norfolk, VA

The Midnight Express (Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton) defeated Rock'n'Roll Express
(Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) when Eaton pinned R. Gibson with the Alabama
Jam in 0:20:47.
Rating: ***

The first match in the history of NWA World Championship Wrestling on TBS had
two of the best tag teams in the world involved. Not only that, but these two
teams are bitter rivals and were looking to get some bragging rights with a win
over the other team in the first match for the NWA on TBS. This was a back and
forth match that provided a lot of excitement for the NWA fans in attendance.
Unfortunately for Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, they had to deal with
numerous instances of interference from Jim Cornette. His interference would
turn the momentum in this match in the favor of The Midnight Express. Much to
the pleasure of Jim Cornette, the manager of The Midnight Express, The Midnight
Express strike first against their arch rival Rock 'N' Roll Express and gain a
big win going into next week's tag team title tournament.

Billy Jack Haynes defeated Ivan Koloff by countout in 0:12:35.
Rating: 1/4*

The popular Billy Jack Haynes wins one for America here tonight as he defeated
"The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff via countout. Ivan Koloff was frustrated
throughout this match as he never could get one up on the powerful man from
Oregon. As Billy Jack Haynes was celebrating his win with the crowd, Nikita
Koloff slid into the ring and surprised him with a powerful and intense Russian
Sickle that leveled him to the mat. Nikita Koloff left the ring to boos from
the crowd.

Ron Bass and Terry Funk defeated George South and Rocky King when T. Funk made
King submit to the Spinning Toe Hold in 0:04:50.
Rating: * 1/2

Despite some token offense from South and King, Terry Funk and Ron Bass
basically dominated this match from beginning to end. These two men will be
entered into next week's NWA World Tag Team Title Tournament, and could be a
darkhorse team to win the vacant titles with their tough and rugged Texan style
of wrestling and fighting.

Strap Match:
Tully Blanchard pinned Magnum T.A. with the Slingshot Suplex in 0:08:20.
Rating: * 1/4

These two could develop into a great rivalry if this match was any indication.
This match was fought under Strap Match rules, however, a wrestler could also
go for a pin in addition to hitting all four turnbuckles. Tully took advantage
of that here as he was able to get Magnum into the Slingshot Suplex and score
the three count. Surprisingly, James J. Dillon didn't play much of a role in
this match and that should only make Tully's ego go up further as he doesn't
have to hear about needing help to defeat Magnum T.A.

The Minnesota Wrecking Crew (Ole Anderson and Arn Anderson) defeated Manny
Fernandez and Thunderbolt Patterson when Anderson pinned Thunderbolt with
the Gourdbuster in 0:07:14.
Rating: ***

This match was signed after Ole Anderson turned his back on longtime tag team
partner Thunderbolt Patterson to reform the dynasty of tag teams known as The
Minnesota Wrecking Crew with his nephew Arn Anderson. Manny Fernandez stepped up
to the plate and offered to be Thunderbolt's tag team partner in this grudge
match. This match was more like a brawl as it spilled outside of the ring
numerous times. However, the end result probably vindicates Ole Anderson's
decision to turn his back on his former tag team partner, Thunderbolt
Patterson. Arn Anderson scored the pinfall after hitting a Gourdbuster on
Thunderbolt Patterson. The Minnesota Wrecking Crew probably will be considered
one of the favorites in next week's tag team tournament to crown new NWA World
Tag Team Champions.

Nikita Koloff pinned Wahoo McDaniel with the Russian Sickle in 0:12:25.
Rating: * 1/2

Wahoo McDaniel gave it his best effort, and even kicked out of one Russian
Sickle early on in the match. However, as the match went on, you could tell
Nikita Koloff was slowly getting the best of Wahoo McDaniel. So it was only
a matter of time before Nikita Koloff was able to hit another Russian Sickle,
and when he did, there was no kicking out from Wahoo McDaniel before the three
count was completed.

The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) defeated Bill Mulkey and Randy Mulkey when
Hawk pinned B. Mulkey with the Flying Clothesline in 0:01:34.
Rating: DUD

Can anyone say they were surprised when they read or watched this result of
this match? The Road Warriors were clearly the dominant team against the hard
luck Mulkey Brothers. But give Bill and Randy Mulkey some credit. At least they
showed up for this match.

Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes when Dusty Rhodes passed out in the Figure-Four
Leglock in 0:16:10.
Rating: ** 3/4

What a great way to cap a great night of wrestling on TBS. Dusty Rhodes
and Ric Flair have had a natural rivalry for years that has involved the
switching back and forth of the prestigeous NWA World Heavyweight Title.
Tonight, only bragging rights were on the line as these two were natural
and obvious choices to main event the first NWA World Championship Wrestling
telecast on TBS. The action in this match was intense as you could tell
neither man wanted to lose this all important match here tonight.

However, neither man could gain an advantage over the other. That is,
until Tully Blanchard walked down to the ring, holding something behind
his back. Ric Flair threw Dusty Rhodes out of the ring and immediately
distracted referee Tommy Young. When Dusty Rhodes got back to his feet, he
was met with a punch from Tully Blanchard. But this was no ordinary punch
folks. This punch was loaded with a fist full of rolled up quarters! Tully
Blanchard laughed as he walked away from the ring and to the back. Ric Flair
went to the outside of the ring and pushed a bloody Dusty Rhodes, who was
bleeding from the forehead from that punch he just took. Ric Flair immediately
applied the Figure Four Leglock to Dusty Rhodes, who was basically out cold and
could not respond to the referee. Tommy Young made a judgment call and stopped
the match awarded it to Ric Flair.

The finish of this match makes you wonder what kind of relationship Ric Flair
and Tully Blanchard have as neither man really likes the other.

Card rating: * 1/2

Match observations:

Next week, the NWA will determine the new World Tag Team Champions by staging
an eight team tournament. The bracket for this tournament is shown below:

1) The Minnesota Wrecking Crew
8) Thunderbolt Patterson & Manny Fernandez

4) The Midnight Express
5) The Rock 'N' Roll Express

3) The Russians
6) Billy Jack Haynes & Wahoo McDaniel

2) The Road Warriors
7) Terry Funk & Ron Bass

And in the Main Event of next week's telecast, Dusty Rhodes and Magnum T.A.
will join forces to battle Ric Flair and Tully Blanchard in a tag team match.
Last week, Ric Flair and Tully Blanchard were victorious against Dusty Rhodes
and Magnum T.A. respectively in singles matches. However, Tully Blanchard
interfered in Ric Flair's match by helping him defeat Dusty Rhodes after
punching him with fist full of quarters. Is there more to this situation than
meets the eyes? Or does Tully Blanchard just hate Dusty Rhodes as much as Ric
Flair does? In any case, make sure to join us next week on NWA World
Championship Wrestling on TBS.

I was shocked that it lasted over a minute.  Road Warriors must not be in match condition.  ;)

I'll ask before Ryan does... rulesset or not?  booked or unbooked?  (Hi Snabbit!)

Just a side note... back in 1985, it was referred to as SuperStation WTBS Atlanta 17 or something like that.

Yeah, TNM never really adheres to the booked time you give it. I'm just glad I booked a time instead of allowing TNM to determine it itself.

It's starting off as an old school rules circuit, but I will not be sticking to it per se, as I will be adding the US Heavyweight Title at some point, and I will hopefully have PPVs or supercards. I find your rules are a good starting point.

This won't be a 100% realistic rendition of wrestling back then, but I thought April 6, 1985 was a good starting point in the history of Jim Crockett Promotions. However, as you noticed, there will be jobber matches mixed with better matches and angles.

And thanks for the clarification on TBS. I just bought a DVD called Superstars of the Superstation from DVD. Lots of great NWA action from 1986, and it even includes the cheesy commercials!
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/09/06 at 02:52:09

No kidding about the booking time. I've booked numerous time limit draws for my main events in Squared Circle and have had several end early thanks to KO's that were unbooked.

actually just about anytime of Crockett is a good starting time... and I failed to mention... MULKEYS?!?!?!?! {hugs RockStar} Most awesome jobber team in history... they had ZERO offensive moves (if you don't include stepping into the ring)!

ARGH!  Rick's rules strike again.

Rick's Rules... a revolutionary force for over 2 years in sports simulation entertainment!

It's not going to be 100% faithful to his rules though. It's just there in case I need ideas. It's sort of a circuit picking up from the first Jim Crockett Promotions show on WTBS after Crockett purchased the timeslot from Vince McMahon in 1985. However, I made all the titles vacant for some reason or another, so I guess it does follow Rick's Rules there.

I just miss the 80's lately for some reason, whether it be the NWA or just the cheesy culture and music back then.
