WWF circa 1989

ianclarkPosted on 10/16/05 at 19:59:57

This is just a quick announcement to say I will be returning soon with a new WWF circuit, starting back in 1989, again with most of the actual roster from that time.  I hope I come up with enough good storylines and events to spark plenty of interest (although I won't be using the T.V. style approach that most others use - more like the summary approach of the WWF Circuit on the TNM homepage).

So, look out shortly for the first roster list and the first pay per view event - Royal Rumble 1989!
Psymin1Posted on 10/16/05 at 20:17:26

Ohh boy!  I am excited for this!  Your last fed was excellent, so this is sure to be great also.  I can't wait, Ian.

Thanks for the great feedback, its much appreciated.  I have started my circuit so will put on the first few cards when I get chance in the next couple of days.

I'll also be more of a "team player" and try and add some comments to other peoples circuits, because there are a lot of excellent ones out there!

Comments:

So, after a great Royal Rumble match, the first WWF pay per view ended with The Ultimate Warrior emerging victorious. His moment of celebration was cut short however, by a sneak attack from Rick Rude, who had only just been eliminated himself. Rude demanded the first shot at the title and The Warrior agreed, so the match has already been set for Wrestlemania I, in March.

Earlier, the Hart Foundation and The Fabulous Rougeaus earned a shot against each other for the Tag Titles at the next card, Saturday Nights Main Event, which will be held every 2 weeks between the Supercards. The first SNME will be extra special however, as it will also include a one night 16 man tournament to determine the first WWF InterContinental Champion.

Comments:

Jake "the Snake" Roberts has finally won a WWF title after years of trying. He deservedly won the I-C tourney from an equally deserving Mr Perfect.

Other big talking points from the tournament came the early eliminations of Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, and the fact that the Macho Man and the Million Dollar Man cost each other any chance they may have had of winning the tournament. The two men had to be separated by numerous officials and thios situation is a long way from over.

Credit also must go to The Fabulous Rougeaus who delighted their manager, Jimmy Hart by defeating his former team, The Hart Foundation to win the WWF Tag Team Titles.
Murphy42782Posted on 10/17/05 at 22:44:22

Nice couple of cards here.

The Warrior is not a personal favorite of mine but given the decade your in he's a logical choice to be included.

I like the Rougeaus, and Jake Roberts too. Glad they went over. DiBiase and Savage, Hogan, and Andre are to good for the IC Title anyway, esp. with Rude and Warrior feuding for the WWF Title. They are a step above those two so it makes sense that they didnt win the IC Title tournament. Perfect/ROberts would make a good feud.

Paul Orndorff defeated Butch Reed via pinfall: 1:37

2 matches that were used to "fill" the card but only lasted 3 minutes in total !

Brutus Beefcake defeated Greg Valentine via submission: 15:11

An excellent match between the two veteran former tag team partners.

Randy Savage defeated Ted DiBiase via DQ: 2:04

A massive disappointment when this match ended early due to outside interference from Virgil. It's a guarantee nothing has been settled here.

Four Corners Top Contenders Match

The Twin Towers, BrainBusters, The Hart Foundation and The British Bulldogs battled to a time limit draw: 20:00

A bizarre ending to this match when no-one was pinned within the time limit. A rematch has already been set for the next Saturday Nights Main Event.

A long match ended in a good victory for Hacksaw.

WWF InterContinental Title Match

Rick Martel defeated Tito Santana via submission: 6:11

Another match between two former tag team partners ended in a victory for "The Model" in perhaps the best wrestling match of the night.

Hulk Hogan defeated Andre the Giant via DQ - 12:32

Another disappointing end when the Giant gave the ref no choice but to DQ him when he wouldn't stop choking the Hulkster.

The Rockers and The Powers of Pain battled to a time limit draw: 20:00

An excellent match of contrasting styles but again nothing was settled when the final bell rang.

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match

Rick Rude defeated The Ultimate Warrior via submission: 2:11

(Rick Rude won the WWF World Heavyweight Title)

An amazingly short match in the main event, ended with a surprisingly easy victory for the World Title. The crowd were stunned into silence at the end of the match.

card rating - *1/4

Comments:

An excellent night of action, with just a few disappointments (Hogan/Andre, Savage/DiBiase in particular).

It has been announced by the WWF president Jack Tunney that The Ultimate Warrior and Jake Roberts will get rematches at The King of the Ring in June. Whoever wins the Four Corners top contenders match will battle Demolition for the titles also.

Talking of King of the Ring, the tournament will start at the next Saturday Nights Main Event, with the 8 qualifiers going forward to the pay per view event.
djmasterscooterPosted on 10/22/05 at 17:52:04

Very good.  I like how you bolded the matches.  It does make it more noticible.  Very good way of building it, with many things left unfinished.  I'll admit that its unorthodox, but it will more than likely result in decent entertainment.

I would like to see Hogan/Rude at SummerSlam though because we never got to see that match which I thought could have drawn, but I'd like to see Mr. Perfect feud with Hogan and see the feud that never was.

Of course, that's just me.  Plus I need my daily dose of Genius.

Oooh.  Hogan has the belt, and Roberts retains.  Did not see that coming.  With Survivor Series, I hope we see a rehash of the 90' Series with a Ultimate Survival Match

Rules are as followed: (changed to reflect TNM's inability for Handicap Elimination Matches)

Have at least 3 4Vs4 or 5Vs5 matches, and at the end of the night have an Endurance Battle Royal between the winning teams with pin fall eliminations only.

Keep up the good work.

Saturday Nights Main Event - 27th January 1990

"Welcome to Saturday Nights Main Event!!  Our first SNME since the Royal Rumble.  The first match of the night is a rematch between Rick Martel and Jake Roberts for the InterContinental Title.

InterContinental Title Match

Rick Martel v Jake Roberts

The first surprise of the night is the appearance of the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, accompanying Martel and Slick to ringside.  Even Martel looks surprised.  A close, evenly fought match turns suddenly when Slick distracts the referee and DiBiase cracks "The Snake" over the head with the I-C belt.  Martel looks bewildered but is smart enought to cover Roberts.

Rick Martel defeated Jake Roberts via pinfall: 12:12

(Rick Martel retains the WWF InterContinental Title)

After the match Slick is asked about DiBiase and is less than convincing.

"Brother, brother, the Million Dollar Man Mr DiBiase is a friend of mine and he just wanted to watch this match from ringside, and I was happy to oblige, for a small fee haha!".

Slick and DiBiase walk off laughing, with Martel following, still looking puzzled.

Dusty Rhodes v Dino Bravo

The battle of the blondes!!  Bravo was in control early in this match, thanks to the distractions of Jimmy Hart, but the "American Dream" rallied and thanks to a series of elbows, managed to set Bravo up for the finish.

Dusty Rhodes defeated Dino Bravo via pinfall: 13:07.

But wait, suddenly The Earthquake appears and attacks Rhodes from behind!  a big body slam leaves Rhodes lying in the middle of the ring.  The Earthquake bounces off the ropes and lands the big Earthquake splash on a prone Dusty Rhodes!  Bravo, Hart and Earthquake leave the ring smiling and laughing, as medical staff attend to Rhodes.

The Rockers v The Powers of Pain

Our only tag team match of the night was a close affair. After about 10 minutes, Greg Valentine and The Honky Tonk Man mysteriously appeared at ringside.  The match ended when they entered the ring and attacked The Rockers.  The referee had no choice but to disqualify the PoP.

The Rockers defeated The Powers of Pain via DQ: 24:09

The Mountie v Koko B.Ware

Jacques Rougeau walks to ringside with manager Jimmy Hart telling everyone "I am the Mountie!".

A very, very good match with The Mountie desperate to make a good start to his singles career in the WWF.  He achieved his first victory with a flying bodypress.

The Mountie defeated Koko B.Ware via pinfall: 17:26

And so, we come to the final match of the night, and what a match!

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match

Rick Rude v Hulk Hogan

Another rematch from the Royal Rumble.  Hogan's fighting 3 men though as Andre the Giant accompanies Rude and Bobby Heenan to the ring!

The match sways from one side to the other, with neither man really able to get on top.  Rude attacks Hogan with everything he has, but cannot put him away. Then, the match turns.  Just as "The Hulkster" is about to make his final comeback, win the match and regain the title, the Giant steps in.  With one big right hand he knocks Hogan out cold, just long enough for Rude to cover him and retain the WWF title.

Rick Rude defeated Hulk Hogan via pinfall: 16:02

(Rick Rude retained the WWF World Heavyweight Title)

After the match Hogan was as angry as anyone had ever seen him.

"I want that damn Andre the Giant brother!!  You tell him, I'm issuing a challenge for Wrestlemania.  One last time, me and the Giant but with a twist.  The loser must leave the WWF forever!!"

In another part of the arena Andre and Bobby Heenan are smiling.

"Hogan, haha, I accept your challenge Hogan, and I will end your career at Wrestlemania, hahaha!!"

As Andre and Heenan walk away laughing, I must also say goodnight after an eventful, and always entertaining Saturday Nights Main Event.  Until next time, goodnight!"

Sorry, this circuit isn't dead, I just haven't had time to update, but will do very soon.
ianclarkPosted on 12/29/05 at 10:53:34

I'm sorry but I just haven't had chance in the last few weeks to continue with this circuit, therefore have completely lost the thread of what was going on in the circuit.

My only option is to stop this circuit but I will be starting another one very, very soon.  It will still be starting around the late 80's in the WWF but will have a weekly "report" on each card and a quarterly "magazine" type feature.
Ghost Mask IIIPosted on 12/29/05 at 18:18:34

I'll be looking forward to this, but try to keep it going.  ;)
