Pro Wrestling: Alpha (11.14.05) Crowning

JoshEnglemanPosted on 11/13/05 at 06:01:47

Sadai Shoguns (KENTA and Yoshihiro Tajiri) defeated
James Gibson and Nigel McGuinness when Tajiri made N. McGuinness submit to a double chickenwing submission in 0:08:14.
Rating: *** 1/2

SBS (Super Dragon and Excalibur) and Monty Brown and Shelton Benjamin battled to a draw in 0:20:00.
Rating: ***

Quality match here in SBS's warm up match to their quarterfinals match with the Thrillseekers. I'm sure they didn't expect to see it go to a draw. Dragon and 'Calibur can't be happy about that.

America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris and James Storm) and Batista defeated BJ Whitmer, Jimmy Jacobs and Blaster Lashley when C. Harris pinned B. Lashley after the Death Sentence in 0:27:52.
Rating: ** 3/4

The number 2 seeded AMW, along with Batista, looked good here in a slight preview of an Alpha Gold Crowns quarterfinal.

Mike Quackenbush, Edge and Christian defeated Alex Shelley, John Cena and Carlito Caribbean Cool when M. Quackenbush pinned A. Shelley with the Quackendriver in 0:09:08.
Rating: ** 3/4

[Alpha Gold Crown Tournament - 1st Round]:
Randy Orton pinned Homicide with the RKO in 0:09:59.
Rating: ** 1/4

Randy Orton picks up the small upset here, but if anyone follows March Madness they'd know that the 5/12 matchup is always volitile and that's exactly what we had here today. Randy Orton now moves on to the quarterfinals and will face Christoper Daniels.

[Alpha Gold Crowns Tournament - Quarterfinals]:
The Naturals (Andy Douglas and Chase Stevens) defeated
The Williams Bros. (Doug Williams and Petey Williams) when A. Douglas pinned D. Williams after the Natural Disaster in 0:17:15.
Rating: ***

In an excellent tag team encounter, The Naturals score the victory of the Williams "brothers." Hopefully, this doesn't lead to any tension in the "family." The Naturals now face the winner of the AMW vs. Whitmer/Jacobs match in the semi finals.

[Alpha Gold Crown Tournament - 1st Round]:
Kenta Kobashi pinned Ric Flair with the Burning Lariat in 0:10:38.
Rating: *** 1/2

In what had to be considered a dream match to most, Kenta Kobashi showed that he is focused on obtaining the Alpha Gold Crown by picking a victory here against The Nature Boy. Kobashi now awates a quarterfinal matchup with the American Dragon.

Card rating: ***

Another good card.  Not a whole lot of specific feedback for you though.  It's hard to feedback in vivid detail during tournaments because it's not always a clear and accurate depiction of where things are going.  Kobashi/Flair is high quality though.  Keep 'em coming.

Yeah, I hear ya. Personally, I can't wait until the tournament is over. I really don't enjoy running them, but I feel it's the best way to crown an inital champion. Here's what the tournament brackets looked like to start with winner underlined:

8. Austin Aries vs 9. Mike Quackenbush
4. Christopher Daniels vs 13. Paul London
5. Homicide vs 12. Randy Orton
6. Kurt Angle vs 11. Chris Benoit
3. AJ Styles vs 14. Eddie Guerrero
7. American Dragon vs 10. Shawn Michaels
2. Kenta Kobashi vs 15. Ric Flair

1. Sadai Shoguns vs 8. Skyfire & Johnson
4. Thrillseekers vs 5. SBS
3. Williams Bros. vs 6. The Naturals
2. AMW vs 7. Whitmer/Jacobs
