TNA Bound for Glory - 10.23.05

rey619Posted on 10/25/05 at 07:03:28

The show opened with footage from the Bound for Glory Fan Festival, including autograph signings with AJ Styles, Jushin Liger, Samoa Joe and of course, Shark Boy.

We saw videos of two brawls, one between Sabin and Bentley, and one between Monty Brown and Jeff Hardy, much to the chagrin of the many teenage girls, Hardy was pounced through some cardboard boxes handily placed at the side of a booth. We even witnessed a singing contest between 3 Live Kru (singing their entrance song) and Team Canada (singing the Canadian National anthem.. which by the way is their entrance song as well). Needless to say, 3 Live Kru won as they actually managed to hit a note or two.

We then come back to the Orlando studio, where Mike Tenay and Shane Douglas welcome us to the biggest event in TNA history.

"Welcome to Bound for Glory. I'm Mike Tenay, and this is my broadcast partner Shane Douglas. Tonight, will Raven face destiny as he attempts to win back the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Title Jeff Jarrett stole from him in Canada?"

"What do you mean Tenay, stole? Jeff Jarrett proved yet again to be the number one player in this business."

"Come on, we all know he only won due to interference from America's Most Wanted."

"Speaking of which, AMW will probably be champs again tonight as well, as they will steamroll over the Natural Losers."

"Harumph! I really miss Don West."

"You're gonna miss him a lot more Tenay, 'cuz the Franchise ain't going anywhere."

Tenay then explains what took place in the preshow as video segments of that were shown. Jarrett and the AMW entered the ring (at the pre-show), calling out anyone who wanted to be guaranteed a spot after the invasion. David Young, Simon Diamond, Jerelle Clark, Mikey Batts and Apolo came out. Jarrett named them his 'Inquisition', and gave them a task: Prevent Raven from making it to the match tonight. David Young claimed that to be cheating, but Jarrett said it was for the better.

Cassidy Riley came out at this point and tried to convince the Inquisition that this was all a hoax, but Jarrett still had them wrapped around his finger. Always the teacher's pet, Simon Diamond ordererd the guys to attack Riley, beating him to a bloody pulp and attacking the stretcher taking Riley to safety. Jarrett then orders the Inquisition to split up and cover all entrances, awaiting Raven's arrival.

Match 1 - Team Canada vs 3 Live Kru

Six man tag-action as TNA's biggest PPV kicks off. Team Canada (- Bobby Roode) were set to face the 3 Live Kru, and this was a firecracker of a match, right off the bat, as A1 went for BG's throat, the Truth smashed his
elbow into Eric Young's face, and Petey Williams taking down Konnan with a clothesline, stomping away on K-Dawg in the corner.

Crazy action as Eric Young flies out over the ropes, being catched by Konnan and Killings and slammed down. Young slowly made his way back into the ring, only to have Konnan throw his shoe at him.

As the clock started to pass the ten-minute mark, both stables got close on several occasions. BG James after a running bulldog on A1, Eric Young after
a schoolboy on Konnan. Ref Mark Johnson is pulled out of the ring by A1 after A1 went down after Killings' scissor kick, prompting James and Konnan to leave their perch and take it to Eric Young on the outside. All of a sudden, the crowd boo as Scott D'Amore makes his way down to the ring, making his first TNA appearance since Slammiversary, slamming his trademark hockey stick across the ebony back of Ron Killings. Petey Williams fakes a tag with A1 and sends Killings down with the Canadian Destroyer for the victory. Team Canada make a hasty retreat as Konnan and BG discovers what happened. As they tend to their fallen comrade in the ring, Kip James runs down, apparently concerned about the welfare of Killings. Konnan threatens Kip, and BG has to separate them. BG motions Kip to leave, as he reluctantly does. Konnan does not look too happy.

Team Canada (A1, Eric Young and Petey Williams) defeated
3 Live Kru (B.G. James, Konnan and Ron Killings) when P. Williams pinned
Killings with the Canadian Destroyer in 0:13:58.

Match 2 - Sean Waltman vs Alex Shelley

Sean Waltman has possibly become the most unpopular guy in the TNA locker room, and nobody holds Waltman in as low regard as Alex Shelley, the guy Waltman ditched in the Chris Candido Memorial tournament.

Waltman charged Shelley at the bell, pummeling him with punches until Shelley could turn the tide with a back heel kick. Shelley continued to attack in a merciless manner, dropping Waltmann with an inverted atomic drop. Sean was not without his tricks, as he countered a DDT attempt into a small package for a 2. In fact, Waltman dominated large portions of the match, showing that he is not always sloppy and lazy, and that he can really get his act together if sufficent motivation is at hand. A cross body yields another two-count for the veteran.

The end came when Waltman suplexes Shelley down, then sends him into the turnbuckle. Waltman charges in, but is met with a high knee. Waltman and Shelley trade punches in the corner, before Shelley counters a suplex attempt into a DDT, following that up with a quick Shell Shock for the 3-count.

Alex Shelley pinned Sean Waltman with the Shell Shock in 11:04:

Outside, Clark and Batts take an interest in an annoying hobo searching for bottles in a trash can. When they approach him, he removes his hood, showing the irate face of Raven. He takes Clark down with a stiff lariat before drilling Batts to the ground with the Raven Effect. Raven then enters the building.

Match 3 - Jerry Lynn vs Elix Skipper

Skipper hasn't been flying high since he and Christopher Daniels broke up, and even the Diamonds in the Rough stable didn't seem to help Skipper at all, as Lynn takes control from the start with a back suplex and an elbow drop. The ring veteran continues his assault, targetting Skipper's back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and a tiger driver. Skipper realizes he needs a gameplan, and brings Lynn down. First with a Northern Lights Suplex, then a dragon suplex.

At around the 7 minute mark, Lynn has Skipper up in a cradle Piledriver position, but Prime Time slides down his back and brings him down with an enzuigiri kick. He follows up with a thrust kick to the head, and sets him up for a double underhook suplex. Lynn braces himself and stops the attempt, quickly utilizing a Victory Roll to pin Skipper. Even though he lost again, Skipper shakes Lynn's hand after the match.

Jerry Lynn pinned Elix Skipper after a Victory Roll in 0:09:50.

Backstage, a nervous Matt Bentley paces inside his locker room. Traci enters.

"Where've you been Traci, it's only an hour or so to my match."

"Relax, we've got plenty of time preparing for the match.. and other things," Traci purrs seductively and strokes Bentley's chin.

"I'm just nervous about this whole dilemma your facing. I'm afraid you're gonna choose backstage interviewing."

"You know what Matt? Win me the top contender spot and I'll never leave your side."

Match 4 - Kip James & Monty Brown vs Sabu & Jeff Hardy

The tenative alliance of Kip James and Monty Brown faced another test tonight, as they had to overcome their own difficulties first and foremost, Hardy and Sabu second. This was quickness vs power, fan favorites vs two wrestlers the crowd loves to hate.

Sabu took charge right away, nailing James with an Arabian facebuster unto a chair, continuing his momentum with an asai leg lariat and a clothesline on the stunned Kip. Sabu controlled his foe for three whole minutes, before he was brought down with a back suplek, tagging Brown. Brown and Sabu was a totally different match, as Brown used his superior size and power to his advantage, pummeling Sabu almost to oblivion. Brown has obviously had some submission training lately, as he put Sabu through the dreaded STF. A couple of moments later, Sabu is Pounced halfway through the ring, but ends up near the ropes and escapes the loss.

As the match comes to a close, James is in control of Hardy, choking away on him and hitting him repeatedly. He tags Brown, and motions for the Pounce. However, Hardy is able to wrest himself away from Kip James, causing Monty to pounce the living shit out of his own tag team partner. As Brown looks on in disbelief, Sabu nails him over the head with a trash can lid, as Hardy gracefully performs the Swanton Bomb for the win for the Human Highlight Reels.

As Monty and Kip slowly make their way back up, Brown Pounces James again, this time on purpose. He points a finger at James, obviously blaming him for their loss. Brown continues to pummel at Kip, until BG James comes running with a chair, chasing the Alpha Male away from his hunting grounds.

BG is about to help Kip back on his feet, when Konnan comes out, demanding that BG returns to the locker room, leaving Kip to his own fate. BG is obviously torn, but eventually walks back down the aisle without interacting with Kip.

Jeff Hardy and Sabu defeated Kip James and Monty Brown when J. Hardy pinned
K. James with the Swanton Bomb in 0:11:08.

We catch a glimpse backstage of Apolo walking the halls, obviously searching for Raven. All of a sudden, Raven charges out of a closet, spears Apolo down and drops a heavy knee across his throat. Raven throws his arms out as a cross and moves on.

In Team Canada's locker room, they are celebrating the return of Coach D'Amore, and their win over 3 Live Kru here tonight. The champagne is flowing free, and everyone is in a festive mood. Everyone except Bobby Roode who is about to face Abyss for the BCW Heavyweight Title.

"Well, I'm going out now.." Roode says, but his voice disappears in the roar of Team Canada's victory songs. "So... that's it. I'm off to face Abyss." Roode doesn't get any response, so he shrugs his shoulders and leave.

Match 5 - Bobby Roode vs Abyss(c) for the BCW Heavyweight Title

For the first time in TNA history, a title from another federation is to be
defended, as Abyss defends his BCW Heavyweight Title against Team Canada's Bobby Roode. Speaking of which, Team Canada didn't appear to interested in the welfare of their teammate, letting him do his battle alone for once.

Roode impressed the crowd in the early goings taking down Abyss with a back
breaker, winning their support for the rest of the encounter. Abyss employed all of his hard-hitting moves, mainly power bomb and chokeslam variants on the young Canadian. Abyss' weight makes it difficult for Roode to use most suplexes and slams, but finds use for lariats and dropkicks.

At around the 15 minute mark, Roode fights his way out of a torture rack drop, but falls immediately prey to the Black Hole Slam. Impossibly enough, and to Father Mitchell's chagrin, Roode kicks out! Has anyone ever done that!? Abyss' manager brings out the heavy artillery, pulling out a bag of thumbtacks from beneath the ring. Abyss pours it in copious amounts in the ring, but it is initially wasted as Roode and Abyss both tumbles to the outside. Mitchell distracts Roode long enough for Abyss to take him down, sending him through the announce table with a power bomb. Abyss slowly drags Roode back into the ring, setting him up for another power bomb, this time on the tacks! However, Abyss takes a little too much time, and Roode is able to headbutt in a northbound direction (yes, you know where), stunning the monster. He then hoists Abyss up and slams him down with a chokeslam on the thumbtacks. Roode covers and WINS back the BCW Heavyweight Title!

Bobby Roode pinned Abyss after a choke slam in 0:20:22.

[Father James Mitchell interfered against Bobby Roode.]

Roode clutches his title, as the Canadian anthem plays over the speaker. It is abruptly stopped, however, as Scott D'Amore and Team Canada make their way down to the ring.

"Well, well, congratulations on your fine win Bobby, this really makes the day complete for Team Canada," D'Amore says with a lot of sarcasm. "You see, while I was gone, I communicated my plans for you via Team Canada's captain, Petey Williams. In these plans, I never mentioned anything about you going solo and challenging Abyss for inferior titles, when it is the X-Division and Tag-Team titles we're gunning for. So Bobby, I'm sad to say so, but you're suspended from Team Canada for 30 days!"

The crowd boo, but Roode is still smiling, despite the suspension. "You know what, D'Amore? You can't suspend me, cause I quit!"

"What?! What?! You can't quit? What are you going to do without us? You're a Canadian in an American wrestling company."

"The fact is, you need me more than I need you. Cause these people here, they like me. They don't boo me. You see, Americans don't boo Canadians just because they are Canadians. They boo you because you have always acted like baboons."

Roode's speech may have made the crowd go bananas, it may also have made him feel good, but the next couple of minutes didn't go down in history as Bobby Roode's favorite three minutes, as Team Canada assaulted him with a hockey stick and their collective moves. A1 and Eric Young even vertically suplexed Roode into the remains of the thumbtacks, bloodying his back. Team Canada left the former teammate lying on a bed of tacks, clutching back in pain.

Match 6 - The Naturals(c) (Chase Stevens & Andy Douglas w/Jimmy Hart) vs America's Most Wanted (James Storm & Chris Harris) for the NWA World Tag Team Titles

The first of three title matches was up next, as the Naturals with Jimmy Hart defended against America's Most Wanted.

AMW didn't look fazed by the fact that the Naturals have won 8 out of 9 meetings, and had several near falls in the opening minutes, including a DDT from Chris Harris and a running powerslam from Storm.

As the match approached the ten minute mark, the Naturals gained control after Douglas countered a tilt-a-whirl into a headscissors and a kneedrop for a two count. Storm changed the momentum again after a low blow, but then both men were down and out after a mid-ring collision. Both men crawled against their respective partners for the much-needed tag, and just when Douglas was inches from tagging Stevens, Jimmy Hart smashes his megaphone across the back of Chase, staring into Douglas' disbelieving eyes. Harris picks up the tag from James and hoists Douglas up into the Death Sentence position. Storm climbs the turnbuckle and within seconds, AMW are the new NWA Tag Team champions!

After the match, Jimmy Hart hugged AMW and shouted obscenities to the crowd to his megaphones, as Jeff Jarrett's masterplan continues to surprise the TNA fans.

America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris and James Storm) defeated
The Naturals (Andy Douglas and Chase Stevens) when J. Storm pinned A. Douglas
after the Death Sentence in 0:11:51.
Rating: ** 1/2
(America's Most Wanted won the NWA World Tag Team Titles.)

We see a pretaped video from someone approaching a check-in counter in a northern airport. You doesn't see this person, only the check-in attendant. He writes down something on his computer, before turning to the unknown person. "So, going down to Orlando are you? Perhaps for the Bound for Glory PPV? I've heard so much about TNA.. so.. are you going to see it?"

The guy doesn't respond with words, put raises his thumb in silent agreement. Can Jarrett's apocalyptic preaching be true? Is this an invasion?

Match 7 - Samoa Joe vs Rhino

The undefeated Samoan submission machine rarely has the opportunity to face someone his own size, but tonight, Rhino presented just this kind of chance.

The first Joe found out was that even though he's strong, suplexing 275 pounds of resilient man-beast is not easy. True, he hit an Aztecan suplex early on for a 2-count, but Rhino's experience paved the way for the unprecedented event of Samoa Joe getting the crap beaten out of him. This was something Joe neither liked nor approved of, and picked up the pace immediately, using a flurry of offenses a guy like Rhino couldn't dream of copying. Still, the man-beast has his own methods, taking down Joe with a piledriver. Samoa Joe didn't really live up to his name as a submission machine in the first part of the match, focusing instead on inflicting as much pain as possible with hard-smashing lariats and forearm smashes.

10 minutes into the match, Joe started using submission moves. First a half boston, then the Kokina Clutch, forcing Rhino to use a lot of strength in reaching the ropes. Rhino then blocked a power bomb attempt, using a spinebuster on Joe to bring him down. The man-beast went outside and fetched a broomstick to bring with him into the ring. He made a swing against Joe, but the big man ducked, and used the stick's momentum to bring Rhino down into an STF, using the broomstick as leverage. The pain must have been excruciating, as Rhino quickly tapped out in what was possibly Rhino's best match since his ECW days. Joe remains undefeated.

Samoa Joe made Rhino submit to a modified STF in 0:15:33.

Backstage, David Young has fallen asleep just inside one entrance, as Raven smacks him over the head with a cookie sheet. Young wakes up, but quickly falls asleep again when Raven connects with the cookie sheet twice in quick procession.

Match 8 - Chris Sabin w/Gail Kim vs Matt Bentley w/Traci vs Christopher Daniels in an Ultimate X #1 contenders match

Ultimate X is back!! Whoever got the X down from the ropes first would be the new top contender match for the X-Division Title. Bentley and Sabin were accompanied by their gorgeous valet's, while Daniels were flying solo.

Sabin and Bentley focused their attacks on each other initially, allowing Daniels to come dangerously close to retrieving the X. After a failed attempt from Daniels to climb one of the poles, the three of them ended up on the outside. And for some strange reason, Bentley and Sabin decided to work together in eliminating Daniels! Bentley superkicked Daniels straight into Sabin's clutches, allowing him to send him down with the Cradle shock on the outside. This bizarre alliance made sense, in that now Bentley and Sabin could focus on beating the crap out of each other. Traci and Gail Kim
came to their men's aid once each. First, Tracy pulled Sabin down, and then Kim actually powerbombed Bentley to the canvas. As both men laid motionless on the floor, Christopher Daniels made his comeback into the match, pulling his way towards the coveted X. Kim and Tracy sent him down with a double clothesline.

From now on out, all three men tried to reach the X, but all were stopped by someone else. Both Daniels and Sabin were dangling close to the X when Daniels dropped, taking Sabin down with him and crashing to the floor with an inverted DDT. Bentley thought he had won the match when Sabin grabbed his legs from beneathing, sending him tumbling with an electric chair drop.

All three men now tried to climb a separate turnbuckle, each and everyone inching their way closer to the X. All of a sudden, Tracy and Gail Kim starts climbing the ropes as well, Tracy chasing Sabin, while Kim goes after Bentley. Since they were fresh and rested, they caught up with the two just before they reached the X. They let go and tried to use their bodyweight to pull Sabin and Bentley down. Bentley and Sabin held on with all of their strength, but Daniels assisted the two lovely ladies with a dual kick, sending four people crashing to the ground before removing the X. Christopher Daniels will face AJ Styles or Jushin Lyger at Genesis!

Number-One-Contenders-Triangle Ultimate X Match:
Christopher Daniels defeated Matt Bentley and Chris Sabin in 0:14:22.

A nervous-looking Simon Diamond paces backstage with a walkie-talkie, fruitlessly trying to reach the other members of Jarrett's Inquisition. Suddenly, Raven appears on the other end, screaming out "Quote the Raven, Nevermore!" Diamond starts running in an unknown direction, and Raven comes charging straight at him, hitting him with a big lariat to the head and punching him down until he doesn't move. Raven then gets real close to the camera.

"Jarrett!! You're next!"

Match 9 - Jushin Liger vs AJ Styles(c) for the TNA X-Division Title

This was perhaps the most anticipated match ever in TNA, as Japanese legend Jushin Liger took on TNA's most phenomenal athlete, AJ Styles!

Styles didn't quite know what to expect, and could have had a short fight, as Liger quickly took him down with a dragon suplex, german suplex and northern lights suplex to earn a near fall. Styles hit back with a brain buster for a 2 count. The Eastern veteran suffered a lot of beating now by the hands of Styles, as the X-Division champion took him down with an inverted DDT and a crucifix facebuster. Liger turned the tide when he hit Styles with a Koppo Kick out of nowhere, and a Crash Thunder Buster.

Throughout the 20 minutes of the match, there were a few rest periods with holds and locks, but for the most part, it was all action, as these two delivered some of the most devastating moves the announcers had seen in a long time. Styles was sent crashing after a top-rope brain buster, while Styles not only skinned the cat, he dragged Liger over the ropes and dropped down on him with a legdrop in one fluid motion! Liger kicked out of the Styles Clash, but was met with the Pele kick seconds later. The top contender to the title, Christopher Daniels decided to come out and badmouth the combatants. This resulted in a short cease fire between Styles and Liger, as they hit him with a double clothesline to send him crashing down from the apron.

Liger connected with the dreaded palm blow on Styles, and a german suplex yielded a two count for the masked oriental grappler. Liger now picked up Styles and motioned for the Running Liger Bomb. Midway through the ring, AJ flips backwards, bringing with him Liger into a rana, cradling his legs for the pinfall in what most certainly is the best match in TNA.. EVER!

AJ Styles pinned Jushin Liger after a rana in 0:21:48.

Backstage, Matt Bentley tries to prevent Traci from leaving, but the gorgeous Traci has made her choice. From now on, she is the backstage interviewer here in TNA. the Spike TV! Representative stops Bentley, claiming that Traci now works for him.

Match 10 - Jeff Jarrett (c) vs Raven for the NWA World Heavyweight Title

Jarrett and Raven collides again, and in what shape is Raven in mentally,
having seen the beatdown Riley suffered, and then chased down every member of the Jarrett inquistion and enacted revenge.

The champion attacked Raven as he sat in his usual position by the turnbuckle, stomping away on him before hoisting him up in a superplex position. Raven was drilled down with a DDT before he managed to slip out of the ring and get a steel chair. Jarrett begged for mercy as Raven approached. Raven then asked ref Charles if he would disqualify him if he hit Jarrett with the chair. Charles replied that if he saw it, he had to do it. Charles then suddenly turned and started talking to someone in the front row, as Raven brought the steel chair crashing down on Jarrett's head, busting him open. Raven took him down with a bulldog for a 2 count.

Even though the Inquisition was taken care of, Jarrett still had AMW on his side, as they made their way out when Jarrett was in trouble. Raven met them with stiff rights and lefts, and drilled James Storm to the ground with the Raven Effect, before rolling them out of the ring and leaving them to the Naturals, who came out and brawled with AMW to the back. Still, this was the distraction Jarrett needed as he brought out the guitar, crushing it on top of Raven's head, only to have him miraculously kick out of it. Jarrett brought Raven back up for the Stroke, but again Raven would not give up, moments later bringing Jarrett down with the Raven Effect, only to have the ropes ruin his chances at regaining his NWA World Title. At this point, Cassidy Riley hobbled out on crutches, intent on helping his master to victory. Raven looked concerned, but Riley motioned for Raven to concentrate on the match, not him. Raven nodded and took Jarrett down with a back suplex, then spreading his arms like a cross and picking up the chair again to use on Jarrett. Charles turned away once again, enforcing the belief that everyone in TNA hates Jeff Jarrett. Before the chair descended down on Jarrett's head, Cassidy Riley jumped the apron and whacked Raven in the head with a crutch. He got in the ring and pulled Jarrett's arm around Raven's body. Charles turned back, surprised to see what's happened but unable to do anything but to make the 3-count. Jarrett is still the NWA World Champion, and Cassidy Riley suddenly has a lot of explaining to do! A superb main event!

Jeff Jarrett pinned Raven in 0:20:27.

(Jeff Jarrett retained the NWA World Heavyweight Title.)
[Cassidy Riley interfered against Raven.]

Harris, Storm and Hart entered the ring to celebrate with Jarrett, as the champ grabbed a microphone. "Well, Raven may have destroyed my little Inquisition, but the three of us can defend against the invasion on our own. Because... hahahaha.. there is no invasion." Jarrett and AMW laughs, while the crowd boo them heavily. "It was all a ruse, set up by your resident mastermind, Jeff Jarrett".

Rock music plays over the stereo, and Jarrett and AMW is taken back a bit as they are awaiting whoever comes out. The biggest pop in TNA history is a fact as... Chris "Jericho" Irvine comes out. Irvine doesn't say anything (he doesn't have to), he just points at Jarrett's waist and then at himself. He grabs a mic.

"Oh yes Jarrett, there is an invasion all right. A one-man invasion from the Ayatolla of Rock'n'rolla, from the King of Bling Bling. You all know my name, and even though I can't say it, you can. Cause Jarrett, you ass-clown, at Genesis, you will be defending that title against... " holds up his microphone to the crowd, which enthusiastically shouts CHRIS JERICHO!

Irvine nods as he slowly recedes back into the face entrance, as Jarrett shakes his head in disbelief from the ring.

Roode choke slams Abyss?  Color me surprised :)

Samoa Joe/Rhyno match was good stuff, wouldn't mind seeing that in real life.

Good card :)  I'd buy it as the actual PPV

tooo bad the real one sucked...

This one was good...Two five star matches amazing
rey619Posted on 10/29/05 at 12:11:58

When Styles and Liger went to 5-stars, I smiled to myself cause I was hoping for just that. Raven and Jarrett? That was a shock, but I think a formula of long match + short moveset (which results in kicking out of a lot of Finishing moves) + booked match is a killer for match ratings.

Well, maybe not totally feasible that Roode chokeslammed Abyss, maybe Roode ate his spinach that day  ;D
