AWA's Action Zone - Oct. 26, 2005

Murphy42782Posted on 10/17/05 at 12:46:28

Welcome to the second episode of AWA's Action Zone. The Pyro goes off as the show opens with the ACTION ZONE theme song. When the lights come up The Amazing Red is standing in the ring awaiting the arrival of AWA Television Champion John "Bradshaw" Layfield for this AWA Television Title Match. The Myrtle Beach, SC crowd is going nuts. JBL's music hits and he comes out and tips his ten-gallon hat to the crowd as they boo him. He has a mic...

JBL: Thank You, Thank You. I know I am not only your favorite wrestler, But I am THE WRESTLING GOD. Noone in the WWE could stop me, and noone especially that midget in the ring could not stop me. So I will grace you all with my presence and beat the snot out of this ru...

With this Red attacks JBL with a corkscrew plancha as he turns to face the ring and the match is on.

AWA Television Title Match
The Amazing Red vs. John "Bradshaw" Layfield (Champion)

This match wasn't very long and was over just as quickly as it started. Red was simply to fast for JBL and it frustrated the champ as he tossed the ref over the top and then used his size to demolish the much smaller Red.

AWA Television Title Match
Amazing Red defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:04:28.
Rating: * 1/2
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the AWA Television Title.)

John Kronus vs. Rob Conway

This was a showcase of some of the lowercard talent and it wasn't a bad match. The fans just weren't that into it and you really can't blame them. Kronus is mostly a tag team specialist and Conway has yet to catch on here in the AWA. They had a few decent exchanges and Conway seemed to get under the crowd's skin due to his arrogance. Conway wound up on the wrong end of this one though as Kronus hit his 450 Senton for the W.

John Kronus pinned Rob Conway with the Flying 450 Splash in 0:13:48.
Rating: * 3/4

The horns sound and William Regal makes his way out in his burgundy suit and he has a mic as the fans boo him.

Regal: Well I didn't expect you to be pleased with someone that is clearly above you. I understand that you feel inferior and thus you chastise those that are better. (CROWD HATES REGAL AND SHOWS IT) But I do have some business to discuss. It involves the AWA Title Picture. As you know a fine young chap named JBL is the AWA Television Champion but we still must crown an AWA Heavyweight Champion and AWA Tag Team Champions. (The Crowd Cheers) The AWA Heavyweight Title is THE TITLE everyone wants, so the Board of Directors has determined everyone should get a shot. So Next week We will begin a round of qualifying matches and what not to see who is truely worthy of a shot. The Tag Titles will be holding an 8 team tournament. I have double checked with the BoD to make sure these teams were correct and they assure me that they are as follows

The Eliminators (Perry Saturn and John Kronus)
The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin)
Chris Benoit and Nick Dinsmore
Jerry Lynn and The Amazing Red
Triple Threat (Chris Candido and Lance Storm)
Colt Cabana and Randy Orton
Doug Basham and Rob Conway
MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro)

Regal: Also The Board of Directors has decided to inform the public of their decision to hold the first ever AWA Pay-Per-View event on November 27th in Durham, North Carolina and it is entitled Battle Lines. Good Day.

Perry Saturn vs. "Classic" Colt Cabana

Quite possibly the most entertaining match in the short history of the AWA Action Zone. Saturn and Cabana went back and forth in a classic encounter and the fans really got behind Saturn after not showing up last match to back his partner Kronus. Cabana got under the crowd's collective skin and it almost seemed that was his goal. He yelled at fans at ringside and even threatened an official before connecting with the Colt 45.

Colt Cabana pinned Perry Saturn with the Colt 45 in 0:10:16.
Rating: *** 1/4

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) vs. MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) w/Melina

Haas and Benjamin looked much better this week and MNM was on the ropes trying to figure them out. Melina pulled her men outside to gameplan on several occasions much to the chagrin of the jampacked crowd. After MNM had their plan they executed almost flawlessly. Haas and Benjamin wound up with the advantage but a miscue on Haas' part led to Mercury scoring the pinfall over Haas. That's two weeks in a row Haas has been on the losing end and Benjamin is not pleased.

MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) defeated
World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Mercury
pinned C. Haas after a vertical facebuster in 0:10:34.
Rating: *** 1/4

*******************************************************************
There is a disturbance in the back and we see Randy Orton behind the wheel of a car as the back door slams shut. The car speeds off. This is odd he's scheduled to face Chris Benoit later tonight. When the camera pans out we see Jerry Lynn flipping out yelling "Come Back B*tch"
*******************************************************************
"Mr. Wrestling" Nick Dinsmore vs. Doug Basham

Dinsmore dominated this match up and Basham really had to try anything to get back in it but it was to no avail.

Nick Dinsmore pinned Doug Basham with the German Suplex in 0:05:26.
Rating: ** 3/4

*******************************************************************
Chris Benoit made his way out as officials were reviving Doug Basham. Benoit helped him up and claimed that he would do since Orton was no longer in the building and Benoit wanted a fight.

"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Doug Basham (Randy Orton No-Showed)

You gotta feel for Basham as he had to take on two of the most technically sound wrestlers the AWA has to offer. During the middle of the match the announce team told us that Tommy Dreamer was hospitalized after last week's attacks and cracked a rib and is not available for action tonight or next week but he should be back in time for Battle Lines on November 27th. Benoit easily dominated this match up and ended it with a figure-four leglock.

Chris Benoit defeated Doug Basham when Doug Basham passed out in
a figure-four leglock in 0:13:33.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Randy Orton no-showed.)

THE MAIN EVENT
"Mr. Wednesday Night" Rob Van Dam vs. Chris Candido w/Tammy Lynn Sytch

This match was fast paced and the fans loved it. Candido was on the receiving end of some big shots, but this only brought out Shane Douglas, Lance Storm, and Dawn Marie. AS they were getting set to help Candido they were blindsided by a singapore weilding, heavily taped-up Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer destroyed them with the Cane as Dawn shrieked. RVD hit the 5 Star Frogsplash for the win.

Rob Van Dam pinned Chris Candido with the Five Star Frog Splash in 0:10:51.
Rating: ***

Dreamer joined RVD in the ring and grabbed a mic. Dreamer and RVD challenged Triple Threat to a handicap match at Battle Lines.

Card rating: ** 3/4
