NWA Unlimited! History...

colmatteusPosted on 08/03/05 at 21:16:42

Here's the backstory:

RAW and SD! redrafted sometime in 2004. In February 2005, RAW became the Unlimited Wrestling Association and SD! became a reborn, mainstream ECW (which you see posted here by twiceaspissed632).

NWA Unlimited came about in June '05, when UWA declared a temporary partnership with TNA Wrestling in which TNA would be allowed one "Showcase Match" on UWA television per week. This was precipitated by an event occurring just a night before at the PPV UWA Surge, where AJ Styles arrived unannounced and defended (and lost) his TNA X Title to UWA wrestler Chris Sabin. NWA World champion Jeff Jarrett defended his title on UWA TV successfully, and the next week (last week, TNM time) the current UWA World champion Triple H took exception to this, declaring his title to be the only one of importance. He challenged Jarrett to a title vs. title match right that night, and Jarrett accepted. Hunter and Jarrett surprisingly tore the house down (*** 1/2) but in the end, a masked man came out and clubbed Hunter in the knee with a lead pipe as he went for the Pedigree! This allowed Jarrett to recover and hit the Stroke to win the match and the belts! He went on to deliver an eerily familiar speech:

***
JJ: No question about it, Triple H you are one helluva competitor and I will
not be a champion that hides.  I stand here before God in heaven tonight as I
said I would be UWA World Heavyweight Champion.  In the tradition of Triple
H.  In the tradition of Chris Benoit... of... Triple H again, the man who will
never die ... and to the REAL Nature Boy Buddy Rogers upstairs tonight.  From
the Harley Race's to the Barry Windham's to the ... Ric Flair's.  I accept
this Heavyweight Title.  Wait a second.  Wait a second ... of Kerry Von Erich...
(looks at the NWA title belt on the ground) God that's beautiful .. and Rick
Steamboat... and the UWA, can KISS MY ASS! (He throws down the UWA World
Heavyweight Title) Tonight, before God and Triple H as witness, I declare
myself, the King of the Mountain, as the NWA. Heavyweight. Champion. Of. The.
World! We have set out to change the face of professional wrestling so tonight
let the new era of the National Wrestlign Alliance begin, the era of the sport
of professional wrestling, the era of kings, the era of NWA Unlimited!

So... there ya go. That's th crowning of a new era, but you'll have to wait until my first show to see why and how :-) ...

The weekly show, Fury occurs on Mondays and it's sister program Inferno is on Sundays (much like it's predeccessor's RAW and Heat). Something unique to NWA Universal is it's version of the X Division. Essentially, the X Division is a place where the best wrestlers come to showcase their talents under the umbrella of pure wrestling, no gimmicks necessary. 8 wrestlers make up the X Division. At any time a wrestler may enter an application to be included in the X Division, from which point their conduct in and out of the ring will be observed closely. After every 6 months, the two wrestlers deemed to be performing most poorly in the X Division will be ousted and replaced with two wrestlers whose applications have been accepted. Conduct and success is measured by a points system, which will be explained at a later date.

As for storylines, most of the stories have come full circle as UWA became NWA Unlimited. But some important information involving storylines follows:

Booker T defeated Edge in a 90-minute Iron Man Challenge (it's basically a best-of series but with Iron Man matches and you keep score by overall falls rather than wins) to become the top contender to the UWA World title. In the final match of the Challenge, Edge was joined by Team Canada and as we later found out, had joined the self-proclaimed forces of Canadian elite. The next night on Fury, they invited newcomer Chris Jericho to join the team, but Jericho turned them down (and subsequently used their Team Canada shirt as a snot rag). Later that night, Edge cost Jericho the main event as he and Booker teamed against Evolution's Triple H and Randy Orton.

Speaking of Triple H, the former two-time UWA World champion was inexplicably fired after that week's show where he lost the belt. We'll have to wait until this week to find out exactly why UWA President Colin Matteus has chosen to do this...

Orlando Jordan has been on fire in the UWA as well, recording victories against Kurt Angle (twice), Brock Lesnar, Booker T, and others. As a member of JBL, Inc. along with The Bashams, he began to defy JBL and refuse to interfere in his matches. Obviously, this annoyed JBL, who began to question OJ's loyalty. Jordan defeated Sean O'Haire in a Top Contenders match to earn a title shot against the current United States champion... JBL! Bradshaw told him to refuse the title shot, but Orlando wouldn't. In retaliation, JBL kicked him out of The Inc. Now these two are on a collision course over the US belt.

As a result of defeating then-TNA X champion Styles, Chris Sabin not only became the champion, but the top contender to the UWA Cruiserweight title held by Petey Williams.

Masahiro Chono and William Regal were dominant UWA World Tag Team champions for several months, but as time wore on people could see that their partnership was growing tense. They held on to the belts because they were such awesome individual competitors, but they didn't have the teamwork down as the used to. They decided to go their seperate ways after our lat show, as Chono is returning to Japan and Regal is doing backstage work as well as appearances on the indy scene. Unfortunately, this leaves us without UWA World Tag Team champions...

Evolution was Triple H, Sean O'Haire, and Mark Jindrak. That is until Randy Orton returned to the UWA at Surge last month to cost Chris Benoit the World title. He joined Evolution the next night, but with Triple H gone (and Jindrak fired... sorry CotD  ;)) this leaves two members. What does this mean for Evolution's future in NWA Unlimited?

A personal favorite of mine... The World's Greatest Tag Team (or TWGTT, "Twig-It" to my brother) went on a tremendous losing streak and after two losses to MNM, Haas blamed Banjamin for their lack of success and broke up the band. Haas went on his way, but MNM simply wouldn't leave him alone. He came to blame them as well for the fall of TWGTT. He finally just lost it and beat MNM to a pulp with a chair after they won a Top Contenders Tag Team Turmoil. Since then, he's been carrying around the chair (which he's since scrawled "MNM" into the seat of) and has been essentially classified as a semi-psychotic loose cannon. He's made aggressive advances toward Melina, which Nitro has taken special exception to.

Any other updates on storylines I'll take care of as time progresses (can someone say asterisks and yellow boxes with editor's comments a la comic books?) in promos and what not.

And before anyone asks... about 95 percent booked.

I'll follow with champions and title histories and a roster next...

Sounds good.  I know the basics of what's going on, and I shall read for sure.  Well done.
