[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 11/22/04

Snabbit888Posted on 06/16/05 at 08:16:55

That's right, brand new GCW material!  This is the first of more to come, as I'm back full time! (I had been lurking, but yeah... lurking sucks)  I will start getting to people's feedback soon, but I don't know if I'll be able to get to every card (I owe Eric, Chris, 91, and Garth feedback for sure).  But we'll see.  For now... enjoy!

++++++

We are 24 hours removed from Glory, and the complexion of things have certainly changed! Last night, Chris Jericho not only defeated World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle in the main event, but he made him tap out! Word has it that the champion has been in a rage all day over last night's events. We also have brand new World Tag Team champions as Low-Ki and "Primetime" Elix Skipper outlasted seven other teams to win Tag Team Turmoil! They will be in action tonight, making their first title defense against the Italian Stallions! Tonight would also mark the start of a 16-man tournament called "Best of the Best," which will culminate with the semi-finals and finals on pay-per-view December 19th from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida! The winner of the tournament will receive a guaranteed World Heavyweight Title shot at February's pay-per-view Beat Your Valentine! But we were at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tennessee for Monday Night Explosion this night, so let's get right to it!

* * * * *

The show got started with "Y2J" Chris Jericho coming out to a thunderous ovation. Jericho wasted little time getting his intentions out in the air, saying that he wanted a shot at Kurt Angle and the World Heavyweight Title. He proved that he could beat Angle fair and square last night, and he wants his chance to walk away as a World Heavyweight champion. This brought out the champ himself, Kurt Angle, along with Steve Bradley. Angle made it very clear that he wasn't going to give Jericho a title match, saying it was a tag team match, so beating him in that match meant nothing, and thus, Y2J didn't deserve a shot. GCW President Ryan Niemiller appeared on the VideoTron and much to Angle's chagrin, said that Jericho DID deserve a title match and he would get that shot on December 19th in Miami, Florida at Best of the Best! Angle was livid, so he and Bradley took out their aggressions with a two-on-one attack on Jericho, but RANDY ORTON was there to make the save. We found out that tonight's main event would pit Orton against Bradley in a first round match of the Best of the Best Tournament!

Match #1
World Tag Team Title Match
Low-Ki/"Primetime" Elix Skipper (c) vs. The Italian Stallions
Elix Skipper and Low-Ki pulled off what some might consider to be a huge upset last night when they walked out of Glory the brand-new World Tag Team champions, winning Tag Team Turmoil. They didn't want to rest on their laurels and were anxious to prove they were going to be fighting champions, putting the titles on the line against the Italian Stallions. Palumbo was up to his usual antics, and Jindrak tried to reel him in, but Low-Ki and Skipper are firing on all cylinders right now and are going to be hard to beat. The Ki Krusher on Jindrak made the champs' first title defense a successful one.

Elix Skipper and Low-Ki defeated The Italian Stallions (Chuck Palumbo and Mark Jindrak) when Low-Ki pinned Jindrak with the Ki Crusher in 0:06:38.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Elix Skipper and Low-Ki retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

With the type of roll that Low-Ki and Primetime have been on, you're going to be hard pressed to find any tag team that can derail them right now.

We cut backstage to the gorilla position where we see the Prophecy - Television champion Christopher Daniels, Sean O'Haire, and Daffney - standing by. O'Haire is furious about walking away empty-handed last night, falling to North American champion Monty Brown. Daniels informed O'Haire that He is disappointed in Sean, but He is wise and forgiving and is willing to let O'Haire redeem himself for his transgressions by following the plan for tonight, starting with the destruction of The Hurricane in the first round of the Best of the Best.

Match #2
Best of the Best - First Round
The Hurricane vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
Sean O'Haire was motivated tonight, not wanting to fail Him for the second time in as many nights. O'Haire came out very aggressively, nailing The Hurricane before the bell rang before our resident superhero even knew what hit him. O'Haire didn't let up for a second in this match, and other than a few desperation punches here and there, the Man In Green was unable to mount much of an offense. After essentially toying with the man for a few minutes, O'Haire put The Hurricane down with the Prophecy.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Sean O'Haire pinned The Hurricane with the Prophecy in 0:04:19.
Rating: ** 1/2

Needless to say, Sean O'Haire's performance was impressive, making him the first man to advance to the quarterfinals of the Best of the Best Tournament.

Match #3
Best of the Best - First Round
"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. Billy Kidman
The Best of the Best first round continued in our next match with veteran Shawn Michaels taking on Billy Kidman. HBK was successful last night in his match with Justin Credible, whereas Kidman came up just a bit short in his bid to take the Cruiserweight Title from Paul London. A very competitive match between two talented competitors. Kidman looked good in this one and had the Heartbreak Kid in a variety of compromising positions throughout the contest. Kidman even was able to catch Michaels off guard with the BK Bomb, and it appeared as if HBK tweaked his back. If HBK is one thing though, it's resilient, and he showed it by fighting through the pain to roll out of the way of Kidman's Shooting Star Press attempt. Michaels was in obvious pain, but he showed his toughness by hitting the Sweet Chin Music and advancing in the tournament in a hard fought battle.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Shawn Michaels pinned Billy Kidman with the Sweet Chin Music in 0:07:49.
Shawn Michaels suffered a back injury. He will be out for approximately 3 weeks.
Rating: *** 1/2

After the match, Michaels laid on the mat for several minutes, favoring his lower back. Officials came down to check on him, but he made it to the back unassisted. The injury doesn't appear to be too serious and will put Michaels out for a couple weeks, but with his history of back problems, you can never be too cautious. Regardless, Shawn Michaels is in the quarterfinals.

* * * * *

We cut to the locker room where we saw Low-Ki and "Primetime" Elix Skipper. As they're talking, the World's Greatest Tag Team enters. Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas congratulate them on winning the World Tag Team Titles and say that they are deserving champions. But the WGTT also made sure to mention that they were the final team eliminated in Tag Team Turmoil last night, as well as two-time World Tag Team champions, so they don't think it's too much to ask for a crack at the gold. Skipper explained that he and Low-Ki are going to take on all comers, and told Haas and Benjamin that whenever they wanted a shot, it was theirs. The conversation ended with a handshake between the four men. This is a match I would love to see happen in the near future.

Match #4
First-Ever Mixed Six-Person Tag Team Triangle Match
The Hardy Boyz/Lita vs. The Basham Brothers/Shaniqua vs. Team Canada/Dawn Marie
For the first time in GCW's history, we had a mixed tag match as Lita, Shaniqua, and Dawn Marie teamed with their respective charges in this six-person tag team match. It took a few minutes before the females got involved, but when they did, the fight was on! Dawn Marie tried to steer clear of any of the physicality, but she couldn't hide for long as Lita grabbed her by the hair and brought her into the ring. The three divas brawled in the ring, but it was finally cut off when Team Canada had seen enough of their manager being assaulted, jumped into the ring, and with a double hairpull, Petey Williams and Teddy Hart threw Lita to the canvas. This brought in the Hardy Boyz who were furious, taking Hart and Williams to the canvas. The Bashams joined the fray, and soon the six men were all on the floor were fighting their way up the rampway! Meanwhile in the ring, Lita caught Shaniqua with a rana and was able to pick up the victory for her team.

Triangle Match:
The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) and Lita defeated Team Canada (Teddy Hart and Petey Williams) and Dawn Marie and The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) and Shaniqua when Lita pinned Shaniqua after a rana in 0:07:28.
Shaniqua suffered a back injury. She will be out for approximately 4 weeks.
Rating: ***

In the midst of the fighting, Shaniqua appeared to have hurt her back similar to the way that Shawn Michaels had earlier in the night. The Bashams came back to the ring and helped Shaniqua to the back, but she was in some serious pain. Head trainer Barry Tarver tells us that as a safety precaution, he is recommending that Shaniqua take a few weeks off to not further the damage. Regardless, a very impressive outing by Lita tonight. Perhaps this won't be the last time we see the women of GCW in the ring.

Match #5
Television Title Match
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. "Mr. Wrestling" Nick Dinsmore
Earlier in the night, reigning Television champion Christopher Daniels had mentioned something about the Prophecy "sticking to the plan" tonight. We thought it just involved Sean O'Haire winning his match in the Best of the Best tournament. We found out there was more to it during Daniels' title defense against primarily tag team specialist, Nick Dinsmore. After a couple of minutes of good chain wrestling between these two highly skilled wrestlers, it became very apparent that much like last night, Daniels' intentions weren't to win the match, but to hatch his plan. Daniels' henchman SEAN O'HAIRE came out a few minutes into the contest and blatantly in front of referee JD Sanders, entered the ring and nailed Dinsmore with a mafia kick to the face, causing the disqualification.

Nick Dinsmore defeated Christopher Daniels by disqualification in 0:04:16.
Rating: ***
(Christopher Daniels retained the GCW Television Title.)

O'Haire lifted Dinsmore up and nailed him with the Prophecy, laying him out while Daniels grabbed his cross that he nailed Rey Mysterio Jr. in the throat with 24 hours ago. This prompted GCW President Ryan Niemiller to send out his personal bodyguard MATT MORGAN to go take care of the situation. Morgan entered the ring and hit O'Haire with a big boot to the face and tossed him outside the ring. While Morgan was taking care of O'Haire, however, Daffney had taken out a rag and covered it with ether, handing it to the Fallen Angel. Daniels jumped on the back of the massive Morgan and covered his face with the rag, causing Morgan to fall to the mat unconscious. Daffney laughed her shriek of a laugh as a huge twisted smile came across Daniels' face. With Matt Morgan incapacitated, there was no one to protect President Niemiller.

* * * * *

Justin Credible came out for our next segment, and didn't waste any time before he started complaining. Credible claimed that last night's loss to Shawn Michaels was a complete fluke and challenged him to come back out and fight him now, knowing full well that HBK not only already had a match, but had injured his back. Instead, Credible got an absolutely furious BROCK LESNAR! Credible tried to talk his way out of an imminent ass kicking, but Lesnar was in a foul mood and he was here to fight anybody, and it just so happened that Credible was the victim. As the assault started, referee Antonio Santangelo jumped in the ring and rang the bell, giving us an unscheduled match!

* * * * *

Match #6
Justin Credible vs. Brock Lesnar
Justin Credible did not anticipate having to go up against the Monster From Minnesota tonight, but it was quite obvious that Brock Lesnar had every intention of trying to break someone in half when he arrived in Nashville, Tennessee. Lesnar gave Credible such a thrashing that the cocky competitor hardly had a time to be in pain before Brock nailed him with something else. Before Credible even had a chance to get going, he was driven through the mat with the F-5 and this one was over in a hurry.

Brock Lesnar pinned Justin Credible with the F-5 in 0:01:33.
Rating: *** 1/4

Brock Lesnar picks up a dominating victory tonight on Explosion, releasing some of the frustration from not picking up the win last night against AJ Styles and Chris Benoit. Lesnar has himself on track, and we know that he is in the Best of the Best tournament, taking on Eddie Guerrero in the first round next week, and with the Monster From Minnesota on fire like this, it may be his time to get one more crack at the World Heavyweight Title.

Match #7
Best of the Best - First Round
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles
Last night at Glory, AJ Styles was able to pin Chris Benoit's shoulders to the mat to pick up the victory in the triangle match that also included Brock Lesnar. If Styles could repeat that feat, it would put him into the quarterfinals of the Best of the Best tournament. However, the Crippler is the first ever World Heavyweight champion, and he seems as determined as ever to regain that title that he proudly carried for three months. These two have become increasingly familiar with one another in the ring, and it was quite evident in the opening moments as the two exchanged counters and reversals, neither establishing the clear edge. As this wore on, Benoit started to gain the upperhand with his vast technical knowledge and experience advantage over the Phenomenal One, frustrating the young competitor. Styles managed to break Benoit's momentum with a poke to the eyes, and went on the attack, wearing the Rabid Wolverine out for much of the middle portion of this match. Styles went to hit the Styles Clash, but in a great counter, Benoit pulled his body up, hit Styles with a hard right hand, and brought Styles down directly into the Crippler Crossface! Benoit has shown how he can hit that move out of anywhere, and it caught Styles by surprise. Styles couldn't get to the ropes and was forced to tap out.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Chris Benoit made AJ Styles submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:10:50.
Rating: *** 3/4

A great counter by the best technical wrestler in the world puts Chris Benoit in the quarterfinals and means that AJ Styles will have to watch the rest of the tournament from the outside.

* * * * *

As we expected they might do after eliminating Matt Morgan earlier, the Prophecy burst into GCW President Ryan Niemiller's office to confront him. Niemiller was noticeably scared, but he held his ground, telling Christopher Daniels that he would have to face Rey Mysterio Jr. one more time with the Television Title on the line at Best of the Best. However, this time, if Daniels gets disqualified, not only will Mysterio be the new Television champion, but Daniels will be suspended for 90 days without pay! Daniels was rattled by this, and Sean O'Haire almost ripped Niemiller's head off, but Daniels held him back telling Niemiller that was fine. He also gave some very ominous words, saying that He is very near and He will be in GCW sooner than later, and when he arrives, "...you will be cast into the fires of Hell, Niemiller." And with that, the Prophecy left Niemiller unharmed, which seemed to surprise Niemiller more than anybody. This gets weirder and weirder every week.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Best of the Best - First Round
Randy Orton vs. Steve "Who's Your Daddy?" Bradley
Main event time, and it was our fourth first round match in the Best of the Best tournament, pitting former friends and partners Randy Orton and Steve Bradley against each other. These two were a part of the spectacular tag team main event last night at Glory and they tore the house down, and they were back to it in this important tournament match. Both men were about half a step slower than last night, but that is to be expected after the effort they put forth in the Match of the Year candidate one night ago, but that didn't stop these two from tearing at each other. We thought things were going to get ugly when World Heavyweight champion KURT ANGLE made his way to the ring in Bradley's corner, but this brought out the number-one contender CHRIS JERICHO to balance things out. Angle and Jericho kept their distance from the action for most of the match, being kept at bay by the other's presence. Late in the match though, Bradley tossed Orton to the floor and then grabbed the attention of head referee Jimmy Appleseed. Angle nailed Orton with a hard clothesline, and Jericho had seen enough! Jericho ran around the ring, springboarded off the ringsteps and took Angle down with a flying tackle!

Appleseed saw the two fighting and jumped to the floor to break it up. Steve Bradley noticed this window of opportunity fall into his lap and he grabbed a steel chair from ring announcer William Buck. Bradley took a big swing at the groggy Orton, but the third generation star had the presence of mind to duck causing the chair to smash into the steel post, hurting Bradley's hands. Orton quickly picked up the chair and blasted his opponent in the skull with it to a huge pop. Orton threw Bradley back in the ring and caught him with the R.K.O. The GCW Official Brigade was out now trying to pull Angle and Jericho apart, letting Appleseed see the cover in the ring.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Randy Orton pinned Steve Bradley with the R.K.O. in 0:12:53.
Rating: *** 3/4

Randy Orton makes the fourth man in the quarterfinals of the Best of the Best tournament, joining Sean O'Haire, Shawn Michaels, and Chris Benoit. The show went off the air with officials trying to pull Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho apart.

The next GCW pay-per-view will of course be Best of the Best, coming to you live from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida on December 19th! Two matches have officially been announced for the show, with more to come.

World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho

Television Title Match (If Daniels is disqualified, Mysterio is the Television champion and Daniels is suspended for 90 days) - "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

In addition, we know we will see the semi-finals and finals of the Best of the Best Tournament, the winner earning a shot at the World Heavyweight Title at February's Beat Your Valentine!
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/16/05 at 17:12:51

Wooo!  GCW is back, albeit in time-saving interview-lite format.  Whatever works best for you is good by me, Ryan.  I'll miss the more detailed writeups, but this is certainly a much more accessable read.

Please say that Goldust and Booker T didn't get cut!

Woo!  Go Italian Stallions!  Win those Tag Team Titles!  ...Or not.  Can't really hold the loss against them, though.  Low Ki is an absolute BEAST, and *I* wouldn't want to take the Ki Krusher.  Waitaminute!  Ryan!  You have Crusher spelled wrong!  It's Krusher with a K!  So it gets to keep the silly alliteration thing going!

More hype for The Prophecy and their mysterious "He."  I wish Daniels would stop talking about him and deliver already.  Maybe he can be put in a box in the ring and dressed like Little Richard or something...

O'Haire squashes Hurricane.  That is not at all unexpected.  Hurricane is the uberjobber in GCW.

HBK over Kidman with the Sweet Chin Music - no real surprise there.  But the back injury was unfortunate.  Hey, I thought you changed injuries into months for the sake of realism?  Is that something you've dropped?

WGTT vs. Low Ki and Elix Skipper sometime soon?  I'd definately try to make it to a show where that match was scheduled.  Sounds very sweet.

Oh nose!  Lita hurt Shaniqua!  5 imaginary moon dollars says that Shaniqua comes back in a few weeks with bigger boobs.  It feels weird to NOT have the Basham Brothers as champions...  Wonder how they're going to work without the... er... stern guidance... of Shaniqua?

Daniels retains the Television Title by DQ.  Nothing new there, and if he was going to drop it it wouldn't be to Dinsmore.  But EVIL tactics in taking out Matt M-m-m-m-m-organ!

Hehe...  When I type it that way it says organ!

Justin Credible runs his mouth, then Brock Lesnar eats him.  Heh.  Edward Chastain also eats people... or at least cake.  He's a sugar-fueled death machine!

Benoit forces Styles to tap in a match that I think a lot of internet fans would pay a ton of money to see.  Very solid performance by both men given that they only had 10 minutes, but one has to wonder how Chuck F'n Palumbo and Mark F'n Jindrak had a better match in half the time.  Odd, that.

More hype for "Him."  This had better be a surprise worthy of Prince Nana himself, Ryan!

Orton over Bradley.  Not entirely surprised by that either.  Bradley is very much an enforcer figure for Kurt Angle.  Sort of like Abyss.  When it comes to actual matches, he's strictly upper midcard.  Orton, on the other hand, just broke away from Angle and is getting a nice push up the card.  So.  Not unpredictable, but the right choice I think.

Good show as always, Ryan.

Booker/Goldust not cut... worry not.

Yes, this style will keep me a little more in the game.

That's all I got now... must go to work. :(
Snabbit888Posted on 06/16/05 at 17:26:15

Oh, and I simmed this card a long while ago (back in February I believe) and if I remember correctly, Michaels' injury was for 1 card, so I made it 3 weeks.
91Posted on 06/16/05 at 20:03:15

Ayyyyy, GCW returns. About time, ya bastard.

Well Jericho gets the obvious title shot at Angle, I don't reckon he'll win it. Orton still seems like the guy who'll take it, but I'm usually wrong about these things. Either way, I can't see the Angle rollercoaster slowing down just yet, even with the his once glorious stable in tatters.

Speaking of Orton, we've got the Rand-ster through, as well as Shawn Michaels, Sean O'Haire and Chris Benoit. No major surprises there. Once  I know the other eight guys still left, I'll make a call, but I'm guessing this'll be the GCW's King of the Ring equivalent. And Michaels injury is easy to work around, which is doubtless a big relief. I can see O'Haire being a possible winner as he's been something of a nearly man up till now, this could be his big stand out moment, but call me again when the other first round matches have been announced or have taken place.

OK, Daniels'll retain, that much I think I can call, but it comes down to who "he" is. Eric Angle again? Or not... either way, "he" interfered and helps Daniels win. And he is... I dunno, Gangrel? Surprise me. And poor Eugene.

No JBL? Will the poor guy ever get his first win, or was he one of the aforementioned cuts? As a matter of fact, who was/will be cut?

The style doesn't hurt the card by the way, I'm guessing the big-ass interviews will stay for the PPVs, but at any rate if it means you churn out more cards I'm happy. For the greater good my friend, for the greater good.
Snabbit888Posted on 06/17/05 at 00:08:27

No, JBL has not been cut... he's just on High Voltage this week (working up to something bigger).  For cut spoilers, leave me a private message and I can give you a rundown.  Don't want to expose the business here! :)
AllPowerfulGARTHPosted on 06/17/05 at 00:18:14

G-C-DUB!  G-C-DUB!

Hey, if Jericho wins the title, he'll be the World Heavyweight Champion in both of our feds.  Not that I think he WILL win.  I'm just sayin'.

"We are now 24 hours removed from Glory."  Heh.  And yet it felt like so much longer...

I have my official prediction for whom "He" is, but I'd rather not post it so as to not give away the surprise if I'm right.  'Course, I'm probably wrong, but whatevah.
