(crossposted) CW: The Wrestling Odyssey Primer
Rick Garrard | Posted on 05/12/05 at 01:00:00 I have crossposted this here to help introduce everyone to the current circuit I am running using the old school rules over on the BCW Forum. This circuit is called Championship Wrestling and is about to have it's marquee event of the year as Championship Wrestling brings to us The Wrestling Odyssey. Week 49 - The Wrestling Odyssey - Birmingham, AL Bell Time: 6:30pm Date: February 3, 1985 -- Stretcher Match - Falls Count Anywhere: Road Warrior Hawk vs Maxx Payne Starting back on August 26, 1984, these two men were introduced to Championship Wrestling fans in the first ever unsanctioned, anything goes match held in a Championship Wrestling ring. Since then, they have had many matches, and even tagged on occasion. At RumbleClash 84, these two met in an anything goes, falls count antwhere match that saw a bloodied Hawk get pinned by Maxx Payne. Two weeks after their RumbleClash bout, they met again, this time it was Maxx Payne getting busted open, but he somehow escaped with the win on that evening. Then on December 16, 1984, Hawk got to face then Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair for the title but with one caveat, Maxx Payne was set to be the referee for the match. Maxx Payne surprisingly called the match in favor of Hawk and presented him with the title in under two minutes much to the chagrin of Ric Flair. Flair, Arn Anderson and Dusty Rhodes then teamed up the following week in a six man tag team match that saw them savagely attacking Hawk during the match, leaving him in a bloodied heap in the ring, setting up Hawk for the first blood match with Maxx Payne in Cincinnati on December 30, 1984. On this night, a heavily bandaged Hawk came out with the with as he busted Maxx Payne open to get the win in a non-title match. Unfortunately for Hawk, this was just his first match of the evening, as he also had a Heavyweight Title defense against Manny Fernandez in a Chicago Street Fight I Quit match yet to come. In this main event, both participants were busted open during the match. And it was in this fight, where Manny Fernandez began his reign as the Heavyweight Champion due to Hawk saying "I Quit". It had been a little over one month since both Hawk and Maxx Payne had been in the ring in the same match, until last week when they were scheduled to be on opposite sides of the six man tag team main event. Unfortunately, Maxx Payne was attacked backstage by Dusty Rhodes early in the night. During the match, Hawk was being confronted by his partner Dusty Rhodes, while Arn Anderson (replacing Maxx Payne in the match) was squared off with Manny Fernandez. And from the locker room, Maxx Payne made his way to the ring to save Hawk from the beating, which leads us to this week when Hawk and Maxx Payne meet again. This time in a 60 minute time limit Stretcher Match! Prediction: -- Tag Team Title match: Champions Ron Garvin & Rick Steamboat vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson Garvin and Steamboat appear to have a love/hate relationship that has seen some very strange actions on the parts of both men in the past. They appear to have finally gotten on the same page back at RumbleClash 84, when they removed the Tag Team Titles from the possession of the Midnight Express and have not reliquished them since, being dominant over most of the teams they have faced. The challengers Arn Anderson and Ric Flair have been in Championship Wrestling since it's inception. They have had their highs in Flair's Heavyweight Title reign and they have had their lows in losing WarGames to a team headlined by Dusty Rhodes. Prediction: -- Ivan and Vladimir Koloff vs Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart It was just last week when Ivan Koloff revealed the latest Koloff family member to the wrestling world. And now this week, they take on the team of the New Hart Foundation that debuted just 2 weeks ago. Prediction: -- #1 Contender Match: Lady's Choice (Terry Allen and Jimmy Valiant) vs Masahiro Darsow and Gronda Terry Allen has been on a roll since teaming with Jimmy Valiant and leaving his Magnum T.A. persona behind. Mr. Long, a former CW referee, has become the managerial advisor to Masahiro Darsow in recent weeks and just recently found the muscular freak known as Gronda for Darsow to team with. One of these two teams will become the new #1 contender this week. Prediction: -- The New Dream Team (Dino Bravo and Greg Valentine) vs Steve Armstrong & Tiger Mask Prediction: -- The Great Kabuki & Waylon Mercy vs Kamala & Masahiro Darsow Prediction: -- Afa vs Sika The battle of the Wild Samoans. These two came into Championship Wrestling chasing Tony Atlas and Rocky Johnson from their WWF days. Eventually Gary Hart got in the head of Afa and caused a split of the two brothers. Someone could get hurt very bad in this family feud. Prediction: -- The Rock N Roll Express vs The Midnight Express This feud dates back to our very first match in Fayetteville, North Carolina. These two teams have an undying hatred underscored with a professional respect for each other. Don't look for them to settle this here this week. Prediction: -- Heavyweight Title Match: Champion Manny Fernandez vs RumbleClash 84 Winner Dusty Rhodes The feud between these two men can be documented back to the Lucky 13 Battle Royal on April 15, 1984, when Dusty Rhodes was eliminated from the last chance match by Manny Fernandez. Fernandez went on to be the last man eliminated by eventual winner Ole Anderson in that match, keeping both men in this contest out of the Heavyweight Title tournament to crown the first ever champion. The paths of these two combatants did not cross again until RumbleClash '84, where then Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes eliminated Manny Fernandez to secure himself a Heavyweight Title match at Wrestling Odyssey should he lose the title between November 18, 1984 and February 3, 1985, the night of The Wrestling Odyssey. The following week after RumbleClash '84, Dusty Rhodes was the special guest referee for a #1 contender match between Manny Fernandez and Rhodes' friend, Ric Flair, during which Rhodes declared Flair the winner of the bout. The very next week, Flair exercised his #1 contender position and wrestled away the Heavyweight Title from Rhodes, causing Rhodes to invoke his RumbleClash win's stipulation that he would in fact get a rematch at Wrestling Odyssey. Rhodes at this point was thinking he'd be facing his friend Ric Flair in a rematch, but then the unthinkable happened on December 16 when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Ric Flair in under two minutes to capture the Heavyweight Title. The title then came into the possession of Manny Fernandez on December 30, when Fernandez made Hawk submit in a match that saw both men left a bloodied mess. The following week would see Manny Fernandez and Dusty Rhodes team up, but lose to the team of Lady's Choice. Manny and Dusty teamed up again on January 27 that saw Road Warrior Hawk as their partner in a six man tag. To say there were hostilities amongst this team would be an understatement. Rhodes had jumped Hawk's rival Maxx Payne earlier in the night, which led to Maxx saving Hawk in the six man tag match. And this match ended the last event prior to The Wrestling Odyssey with Dusty Rhodes and Manny Fernandez, teammates for the night brawling throughout the arena. Can Rhodes fulfill his Wrestling Odyssey to be the Heavyweight Champion again? Or will Manny Fernandez turn the American Dream's hopes into his worst nightmare? Prediction: |
