The WWF in 1992 - Royal Rumble '92 (The Beginning)

djmasterscooterPosted on 02/27/05 at 17:28:58

WWF Royal Rumble 1992
Albany, New York

We open up with a highlight package of tonight's main event, including the return of the ULTIMATE WARRIOR, and the PPV debut of PAPA SHANGO.

Match #1
The Bushwhackers Vs The Beverly Brothers

A nice, adequate match to open up the show.  The fans got into the wacky antics of the Bushwhackers, although it seemed like Luke had a look of resentment on his face towards the end of the match.  Anyway, Bushwhackers hit the Battering Ram and Butch pins Blake in a match that might have been too long.

The Bushwhackers (Bushwhacker Luke and Bushwhacker Butch) defeated The Beverly Brothers (Beau Beverly and Blake Beverly) when Butch pinned Blake after the Bushwhacker Battering Ram in 0:19:22.
Rating: ** 3/4

Backstage, the Coach of the 90's, Sean Mooney interviews Roddy Piper over his match with The Mountie.  Piper says he hasn't been focused lately, but he'll do his best to represent his people.

Match #2
For the WWF Intercontinental Title
The Mountie © Vs "Rowdy" Roddy Piper

To start the match, Piper tapped in to the hijinx that hadn't been used since WrestleMania VI.  Piper and Mountie then exhibited a decent amount of back and forth technical offense.  Piper had the Sleeper locked on, but a strange reversal causes The Mountie to accidentally knock out the ref.  The Mountie took advantage of this when he nailed Piper with the Cattle Prod, followed by locking in the Carotid Control Technique.  The referee came to, and lifted Piper's arms three times then called for the bell, declaring Piper unable to continue.

The Mountie made Roddy Piper submit to the Carotid Control Technique in 0:20:57.
Rating: ** 1/2
(The Mountie retained the WWF Intercontinental Title.)

In a dark alcove of the arena, we see Papa Shango chanting and performing some sort of voodoo ritual.  He has a picture of his sacrifice for tonight, and that is Virgil.

Match #3
Papa Shango Vs Virgil

A decent amount of action here, especially from enhancement talent like Virgil.  Shango displayed his voodoo rituals here and basically toyed with Virgil, until Virgil discovered a second wind, but that wasn't enough, and after 20 minutes in, Shango picks up his first WWF victory.

Papa Shango pinned Virgil after a legdrop in 0:22:23.
Rating: *** 1/4

Backstage, Sean Mooney is with Hawk and Animal, talking to them about defending the tag team titles against The Natural Disasters.  The Road Warriors seem confident in keeping the titles.

Match #4
For the WWF World Tag Team Titles
The Road Warriors © Vs The Natural Disasters

Hawk started off with Earthquake, and the action was far less superior than anything we have seen tonight.  Earthquake spent most of the action on the outside with Animal, leaving Hawk in the ring with Typhoon.  Animal thought he had taken care of Quake when he climbed the top rope to take out Typhoon, but Quake knocked Animal off the top turnbuckle, and Hawk couldn't get Typhoon up.  Typhoon powerslammed Hawk, followed by a Big Splash for the 1-2-3, and we have new tag team champions.

The Natural Disasters (Earthquake and Typhoon) defeated The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) when Typhoon pinned Hawk with the Big Splash in 0:13:56.
Rating: DUD
(The Natural Disasters won the WWF World Tag Team Titles.)

We are treated to a Rumble montage of the participants giving comments about trying to win the big one tonight, and winning the vacant WWF World Title.  Some of the participants include Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Jim Duggan, Sid Justice, Randy Savage, and the returning ULTIMATE WARRIOR.

Match #5
For the vacant WWF World Title
30 Man Royal Rumble

The British Bulldog and Ted Dibiase come out as one and two and the match begins.  Bulldog gets thrown out right away, and Ric Flair enters at #3, followed by Jerry Sags at #4, Sags is eliminated by DiBiase.  Haku enters at #5, and is eliminated within 41 seconds by DiBiase.  Shawn Michaels enters next, followed by Tito Santana, who gets eliminated by Michaels within a minute.  The Barbarian enters next, but Michaels does something amazing, and eliminates both Ric Flair and Ted DiBiase within a minute of each other.  While Michaels was celebrating, The Barbarian threw him out.  The Texas Tornado enters next, and The Barbarian throws him out too.  Repo Man and Greg Valentine enter next, and Repo eliminates Valentine and The Barbarian.

Big Boss Man and Nikolai Volkoff enter next.  Volkoff gets thrown out by Boss Man, and Boss Man scores again by eliminating Repo Man.  Owen Hart and Roddy Piper are up next, but Boss Man throws them out too, leaving us with a not too exciting rumble up to this point.  Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan, and Irwin R. Schyster enter in sucession.  Boss Man throws Duggan out, and Schyster throws out Roberts.  34 Minutes in, and we get Mr. Perfect, who eliminates our star the Big Boss Man, and now the Undertaker enters, who gets rid of Mr. Perfect, who remains at ringside to hangman The Undertaker on the top rope.  Randy Savage enters next, and the Undertaker tosses out Irwin R. Schyster, and Savage.

The Berzerker enters and leaves as soon as he enters.  The music hits, and the crowd goes nuts for the next entry.  It's the return of the Ultimate Warrior.  He charges the ring and promptly eliminates The Undertaker.  The Warrior soaks up the accolades until the next entry, and it is Bret Hart.  They go back and forth until Rick Martel enters.  It's 48 minutes, and another familiar song hits.  The crowd once again goes nuts.  It's Hulk Hogan.  He enters the ring and Bret Hart is the next to go at Hogan's hand.  Skinner, Sgt. Slaughter, Sid Justice, and the Warlord are the next and last to enter.

We have 7 to end this rumble now.  Martel eliminates Sid Justice on a fluke, and Hogan eliminates Sgt. Slaughter. 68 minutes in, and the Warlord gets thrown out by the Warrior.  Martel throws out Skinner and we are down to three at the 75 minute mark.  The crowd knew that Martel would be next to leave, and he was eliminated by Warrior at the 77 minute mark, and then you couldn't spot a fan sitting in the entire arena.  Hogan and Warrior were left, and one of these men were going to be the next WWF Champion.  Hogan and Warrior start slugging it out, and Hogan nails Warrior with a boot, and goes for the Leg Drop, but Warrior moves.  Warrior goes into his Warrior rage and nails Hogan with multiple clotheslines, and finally nailing him with one that sends him over the top rope.  The crowd goes nuts and The Warrior has won the WWF World Title.

30-Man Battle Royal for the vacant WWF World Title:
The Ultimate Warrior won a 30-man Royal Rumble
Rating: *** 1/4
(The Ultimate Warrior won the WWF World Title.)

Hogan grabs the belt from the time keeper, and gets back into the ring.  He hands the belt to the Warrior and raises his hand as the crowd goes nuts and the show ends.
