IWA:NE - Heavyweight Tournament Night 1

rey619Posted on 02/19/05 at 16:21:37

The date is May 20th, and the venue is Garfield, New Jersey. Tonight, 16 men will enter a tournament to crown the first IWA:NE Heavyweight Champion. 4 men will emerge from this show and move on to the June show, where they will square off in a 4-corner elimination match. We'll jump right to the first match. '

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 1 - James Gibson vs nWo Sting

The fans were really at their feet when they saw Sting enter the arena, but it quickly died down when he removed his jacket and displayed his nWo shirt.
Even though Gibson hadn't won a single match since his debut, all his opponents had been a lot tougher than nWo Sting, and Gibson smiled when he found out it wasn't the real deal. However, Gibson really had problems with nWo Sting, and how Gibson will be able to turn his losing streak is beyond me, as nWo Sting won with the Diving Clothesline.

Gibson became so upset that he pushed away the ring announcer and threatened to beat up a few people in the crowd before shamefully returning to the back.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 2 - Randy Orton vs Samoa Joe

The crowd really liked this match, as Samoa Joe finally got his hands on Orton, who for several months have been thrash talking indys. It all culminated at the Round Robin show in March, when armed with a chair, Orton went amok on Joe, DJ Hyde and AJ Styles. Joe has been very vocal in the back about facing Orton, and this tournament presented a double opportunity. Orton hid under the ring in the opening minutes, but reluctantly entered when he was almost counted out. Joe landed a few hard chops on the Legend Killer, whose punches had no effect on the big Samoan. Orton then had to use underhand tactics such as low blows and chokes to gain the momentum. The match turn into a veritable brawl, and Orton was busted wide open. Joe got a 2 count from an Exploder, when Rhyno appeared at ringside, distracting the ref from making the pin. Joe pushed Rhyno down from the apron, and ran right into the RKO! 1.. 2... Joe kicks out! Joe then locks on an STF, but again, distraction from Rhyno prevents the ref from seeing Orton tap out. Joe tries to push Rhyno down again, but the ref gets in the way and is down. Rhyno enters the ring to spear Joe, but he misses and spears Orton. Joe hits Rhyno and then Orton with the Island Driver, and the ref crawls over to make the count.

After the match, Orton complained to Rhyno about the interference backfiring. He started to push and slap the man-beast, who responded by spearing Orton again, this time intentionally!

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 3 - Jimmy Jacobs vs Sabian

Another guest entrant here in the tournament, this time Sabian facing off with Huss Jimmy Jacobs. These two put on a combination of cruiser action and hardcore, and in the end, Jacobs and his fuzzy boots advanced in the tournament.

Jacobs was celebrating in the ring, when just like last month, Sinn entered the ring. Jacobs was about to leave, but Sinn grabbed a hold of him and spun him around. "Hey, Jacobs.. don't you think you have something to say to me? Like an apology maybe?"
Jacobs rolls out of the ring, flips Sinn the bird and leaves quickly.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 4 - Alex Shane vs Dirk Feelgood

Two British wrestlers squaring off in IWA:NE. Shane, one of the hottest names in FWA against the flamboyant Feelgood of the UK Indies should have been a one-sided deal, but Feelgood managed to hang around for quite some time before the "Showstealer" took it away with the One Night Stand.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 5 - AJ Styles vs Mikey Batts

AJ Styles had apologized on his homepage for the loss against Teddy Hart, and wanted to rectify it by advancing in the tournament against Mikey Batts. Batts is able to connect with a few moves in the opening minutes, but takes to much pride in it and doesn't see the superkick coming. Styles then quickly wraps up this match and easily advances to the next round.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 6 - Jerelle Clark vs DJ Hyde

Really a severe mis-match of height, weight and style here, but if someone could make a good match anyway, it would be Clark and Hyde. Clark was dominated early by Hyde's power moves, but when Clark went to the air, Hyde and the crowd were all dazzled. Still, Hyde's lariats and spinebusters sapped vastly more strength out of Jerelle than any moonsault in the world, and Clark had to combine his high-flying with some submission work. After enduring chants of 'boring, boring' for some time, Hyde ended the match with a Blue Thunder Bomb in a match that went on for too long.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 7 - Eddie Guerrero vs CM Punk

Eddie and CM respectfully shaking hands before the start of this technical match. Sadly, this match was interrupted by AJ Styles who came down with a mic, saying that 3 minutes had already passed, and by this time he had already won his match. But then again, it could only be one 'Phenomenal' as Styles put it. Styles then did color announcing for the DVD, while Punk and Guerrero wrestled. Punk connected with a few Shining Wizards, and even kicked out of the Frog Splash before falling prey to an armbar combo submission hold.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 1 Match 8 - Chris Candido vs Teddy Hart

Originally intended to be Homicide vs Teddy Hart, Homicide decided to withdraw from the tournament due to some issues he had with Hart. Candido took his spot, and didn't disappoint in his chemistry with Hart. Hart did all his usual flips off the top, but when he tried a dive to the outside, someone pulled Candido away, causing Hart to crash to the floor. That someone turned out to be Homicide! They roughed up Hart on the outside, and Candido performed his finisher for the upset victory! Homicide laid the boots on Hart after the match, and security had to enter to break it up.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 2 Match 1 - Samoa Joe vs Alex Shane

Both these men were tired from their grueling first round matches, which was evident when Shane went for a power bomb, and was unable to lift Joe off the ground. Joe could indeed lift Shane, finishing him off with an Aztecan suplex.

Heavyweight Tournament Round 2 Match 2 - nWo Sting vs Jimmy Jacobs

Jacobs looked like he was afraid of coming into the ring, but after making sure that Sinn was nowhere to be seen, he braved facing nWo Sting. The fake Sting have rested for quite some time now, and Jacobs looked more interested watching out for Sinn. Consequently, he was picked up and powerslammed for the pin. nWo Sting advances to the Tournament Final!

Heavyweight Tournament Round 2 Match 3 - AJ Styles vs DJ Hyde

Styles had defeated Batts in no time, and didn't waste any time pinning DJ Hyde either. Even though Hyde's size prevented him from doing the Styles Clash, AJ has more tricks in store. After the match, AJ continued to beat on Hyde until the big man started to bleed. "Latino Heat" ran out for the save. AJ grabbed a mic.

AJ: "Eddie Guerrero.. I really hope you beat Chris Candido, cause I miss the feeling of pinning you, HOMES!"

Heavyweight Tournament Round 2 Match 4 - Chris Candido vs Eddie Guerrero

Candido made his debut last month losing to Eddie, and while he desperately wanted revenge, Eddie was already looking forward to next months rematch with AJ Styles. Tammy did her best to distract Eddie, but she may not have the 'qualities' she used to have. Homicide entered the ringside late in the match, but before he could do any harm, Teddy Hart appeared, and the two brawled to the back. Eddie performs a beautiful frog splash to win the match.

Rating: ***3/4

After the match, Eddie Guerrero asks the crowd if they are looking forward to next month's show when AJ Styles sneaks into the ring and attacks Guerrero. Eddie responds with a few chops, before they lock up in the corner. nWo Sting makes his way down to the ring and squashes them both with the nWo Stinger Splash. He parades around the ring for a short while, before Samoa Joe enters the ring and puts him down with the Island Driver. Samoa and Eddie have a staredown before the slide out of the ring and walk back to the lockerroom.

Card Rating: **3/4

Rey, what the HELL are you doing letting nWo Sting win? HUH! HUH!!!!
rey619Posted on 02/21/05 at 10:11:22

It's due to a little unfortunate combination of mystery wrestler + unbooked... the only thing I will take the blame for is putting him in my database in the first place  :P

IWA NEWS -

IWA: NE will return to Philadelphia on June 8th for their Crowning of A Champion show. The main event will of course be the huge 4 Man elimination match between Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Eddie Guerrero and . . . nWo Sting!

- President and booker DeMei was not too happy about NecroButcher's last showing here in IWA, but he has given the Butcher one more chance. He will team up with Jimmy Rave to take on the Outkast Killahz in a Hardcore match. Hopefully, Necrobutcher will be more in his own element now.

- Both the Briscoes and Generation Next have been very vocal backstage about tag-team titles, and both teams have been signed for the Philly show. In what capacity is not known, since Jay Briscoe has already been signed in a singles match against James Jacobs.

- Homicide no-showing because his alleged "problems" with Teddy Hart was, as we know, a work, and the feud will continue on June 8th, when Teddy teams up with CM Punk to take on Homicide and Chris Candido.

- Randy Orton's paid interference against Samoa Joe backfired last show. Now, the man-beast Rhyno, enraged that Orton put his hands on him, has demanded a match. Can the ever so unpopular Randy Orton survive the former ECW World Champion?

- Also to appear: Sabian, Nigel McGuinness, Carnage Crew, Mikey Batts, Jerelle Clark, and yet another former WWE superstar (identity kept secret at this point of time).

[Editor's Note]

Who's hot??

- Eddie Guerrero.. his natural charisma makes him a fan favorite here in IWA.

- Nigel McGuinness . . . even though he didn't wrestle on the last show, the British grappler won the four corner match two shows ago, and earned tremendous respect from the crowd.
