GIJWF time-waster

AllPowerfulGARTHPosted on 11/23/04 at 20:20:10

I haven't forgotten about my promise to bring you a glorious fusion of G.I. Joe and TNM.  I have been spending my time writing up bios for all of my GIJWF superstars (in alphabetical order), and I'm about to start on the S's, so it won't be too long now.

The GIJWF will actually be a continuation of the G.I. Joe league I started many years ago, using the actual action figures in a shoddily-made ring consisted of hard plastic "Gymbo" construction pieces.  This league has continued on over the years through a combination of actual use of the action figures (usually as a way to keep my fidgety hands busy while watching WWF/E) and TNM simulation (which has never really worked as I'd like it to).  In GIJWF time, the league is in the fourth month of its eighth year; WrestleMania 8 (yeah, all the PPV names are taken from WWE...the league started as a total WWE rip-off and some elements of that remain) has just taken place, and a brand split is about to occur.  The GIJWF sort of exists outside of the normal time flow, so it never really had any years attached to it.  For simplicity's sake, I have decided that year 1 started in January of 2001.  That means the league is now in April 2008.

The GIJWF roster consists ONLY of G.I. Joe figures I own.  This is key to its success, because it has allowed me to customize their movesets according to the mobility and size of the figures, and it has also given me something to look at instead of words on a computer screen.  The downside of this is that it meant the roster was exactly the same for many years until I started using garage sales and Ebay to obtain more figures.  However, having done that, the league now has an expansive roster of both new superstars and old superstars, and the brand split is being used to give all of them a chance to succeed (the roster is a wee bit overloaded right now).

I should be ready to start posting cards in a few more days (I'll say a week to be on the safe side and compensate for the procrastination I expect to commit).  And if you're all veeeeeerrrrry nice, I might just offer up an export package or two.

'Til then, here are the GIJWF's current champions:

Undisputed World Heavyweight champion: Ken Masters (won Armageddon 2007 over Night Creeper)
Intercontinental champion: Spearhead (won Survivor Series 2007 over Duke)
Tag Team champions: The Darkness [Dee Jay & Steel Brigade] (won March 2008 over the New Enemy [Iron Grenadier & Ferret])
European champion: Salvo (won WrestleMania 2008 in a six-man match, last pinning Forcewave)
Hardcore champion: Blowtorch (won December 2007 over Scrap-Iron)
Cruiserweight champion: Crazylegs (won WrestleMania 2008 over Python Officer)

*marks out for crazylegs*

I used to do that too with my GIJoes.  I had (well, still have somehwere) one of the old 80s light blue WWF rings and I always thought that the GIJoes fit better in them than the actual WWF figures.  Plus they provided more movement. ;D

I too used to get new GI Joes and just throw all the weapons in a box and wrestle with them.  Guile and Blanka were always my stars. :)

Isn't it funny how similar fans are?  I did the same thing too.  And you are right, the GI Joe's did fit the WWF ring better then their bulky hard plastic figures.

lol.  I had a Guile too!  Didn't have a Blanka though.  I had M. Bison, he was my star heel most of the time (he usurped Cobra Commander).  I had two that were special edition or some such thing where they were slightly larger (taller) but had the same joint positions so they were my resident giants  :)  Sad that I can remember that...

... no... what really sad is that the name for the wrestling gimmick of myself originated by me renaming one of the GIJoes I wrestled with because I couldn't remember his real name... that is sad :D

Heh.  Bison and Guile are both in the GIJWF, but they are currently just inhabiting roles in the tag division.

I have Blanka too, but I'll never use him because his figure is too awkward and inflexible.  The guy I bought the figure from on Ebay didn't even include the hair, that cheapass.

I actually had the old AWA red ring with the steel cage attachments & I used to use not only my GI Joe guys but afew bigger action figure (Marvel secret wars) for the "Giants" in the ring. It is amazing how much so many people have in common even from all over the US & the rest of the world.

My fav was 1 of the guys from SGt Slaughters team that had the flat top. He was the former Cobra Viper.

I don't remember alot of their names because I always used them as substitutes for real wrestlers.
