[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 9/13/04

Snabbit888Posted on 11/15/04 at 07:04:09

San Francisco, California's Cow Palace was our last stop before this Sunday's pay-per-view event, Retribution! Only six days away from the big event, there were a lot of things that could take place tonight as a lot of combustible elements were in the building. We know that tonight, Billy Kidman and Cruiserweight champion Paul London will take on Tommy Dreamer and Perry Saturn, the Revolution! Also, The Hurricane and Teddy Hart will go one-on-one. And in our huge main event, it will be "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels taking on Brock Lesnar! With the sketchy condition of Michaels' back, I'm not sure if signing on to face Lesnar this close to Retribution is a great idea, but Michaels has always been more heart than brains. The night began though with the status of Lance Storm and the North American Title.

* * * * *

[After the opening to Monday Night Explosion, GCW President Ryan Niemiller is already standing in the ring.]

RN: Hello San Francisco!

[Big crowd pop.]

RN: I know you all, as am I, are anxious to get to the action tonight, but there are a few announcements I need to make before we get started. Everyone saw Lance Storm, in a successful North American Title defense, tear his right rotator cuff last week. After speaking with several doctors and specialist, the injury is as serious as we originally feared. To Lance Storm's credit, he has insisted that he go ahead with his North American Title defense at Retribution against Sean O'Haire. He has said he would rather lose the title in a match than have it taken from him, which is admirable. But it would be foolish of me to put a wrestler with his injury in a match a mere two weeks after suffering the injury. Lance is going to need major surgery and a lot of recovery time before he can be healthy enough to compete, so it is with much regret that as of tonight, September 13, 2004, the North American Title is officially vacant.

[Big crowd boos for this. Lance Storm had really been gaining popularity before his injury.]

RN: After meeting with the GCW Championship Committee this week, a tentative plan was set up in case the title had to be vacated. What's going to happen is...

[Before Niemiller can continue, he is interrupted by "Crazy Little Voices" by Ra and out comes the Prophecy, "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels and Sean O'Haire. Daniels is decked out in a full priest's robe complete with the large cross hanging around his neck. O'Haire is his usual disgruntled-looking self. Daffney is not there along with them. Daniels has a microphone in hand as he enters the ring.]

CD: What's going to happen is you're going to get that North American Title from that gimp Lance Storm and you're going to give it to the Chosen, Sean O'Haire.

RN: I'm afraid I can't do that.

[Sean O'Haire didn't like this as all, as he starts toward Niemiller.]

CD: Easy, Sean. And why can't you?

RN: Because that's not how I run things. In Global Championship Wrestling, championships are earned, not given away on a silver platter.

CD: Sean O'Haire did earn it though. O'Haire earned it when he became the Chosen, the man who He [Points to the sky] has bestowed as one of his soldiers. It's in the prophecy, and it's going to happen whether you like it or not, Niemiller. So I suggest you do the right thing, or else.

RN: Or else what? I don't respond well to threats.

CD: There's no threats being delivered here. I'm just telling it as it is. We don't want this to get ugly any more than you do. And provided you do the right thing, no harm, no foul, and we'll be on our way.

RN: I've told you, Christopher, titles are EARNED here, and if Sean O'Haire wants to be North American champion, he is going to EARN it!

CD: Niemiller...

RN: MISTER Niemiller...

CD: It doesn't matter.

RN: I understand your position. Sean O'Haire earned the chance to wrestle the North American champion by winning the battle royal. O'Haire's hard work there will not go unrewarded. In order to fill the title vacancy, there will be a 15-man tournament, beginning next week here on Explosion and concluding with the finals at the October 24th pay-per-view event, Trick or Trouble. I will announce the brackets for the tournament at Retribution.

CD: I fail to see where the reward is.

RN: Like I said, it's a 15-man tournament. Due to O'Haire's number-one contender status, he will receive a bye in the first round.

CD: A bye? A bye? You think that is enough of an offering to appease us, to appease Him?

RN: In addition, it has been determined that you, Christopher Daniels, will be facing Rey Mysterio Jr. tonight for his mandatory Television Title defense, although with the threats levied upon me, you're lucky I don't revoke that title shot.

CD: We'll take it for now, Niemiller, but I STRONGLY advise you to reconsider your stance and award Sean O'Haire the North American Title.

RN: I'll keep that in mind.

[Daniels smiles at Niemiller smugly before he and O'Haire leave the ring. Cut to commercial.]

Match #1
The Hurricane vs. Teddy Hart
The Hurricane made the save for Shark Boy last week when Teddy Hart refused to release the Fujiwara armbar he had applied. Hart took exception to that, and these two former partners locked horns as a result. A great match between these two as they gel very smoothly in the ring. Hart tried to confuse The Hurricane with his unique style, but the Man In Green isn't run-of-the-mill in his own right as he stayed step for step with the Canadian. The end of this match came as The Hurricane whipped Hart into the turnbuckle, but Hart showed great athleticism by jumping onto the top rope and flying off with a backflip over The Hurricane. When Hart landed, he fell to a knee to catch himself, which was all the opportunity The Hurricane needed to turn around and blast him with the Shining Wizard. Hart's clock was effectively cleaned. and The Hurricane had a victory.

The Hurricane pinned Teddy Hart after the Shining Wizard in 0:06:06.
Rating: ****

The Hurricane left the ring celebrating his win, but before he made it all the way up the ramp, a groggy Teddy Hart grabbed the house mic.

* * * * *

[Teddy Hart, still a little loopy after that Shining Wizard, has the microphone.]

TH: HURRICANE! I'm tired of being embarrassed by you and by Shark Boy week in and week out. I know the card is full for Retribution, but the pre-show High Voltage isn't! I want to show both of you punk asses that this past month has been nothing but flukes. You and that fish against me and my partner! You don't know him yet, but you'll know him very well soon enough!

[The Hurricane gives Hart a nod as if to say, "I accept." Hart throws the mic down as we cut to commercial.]

Match #2
Paul London (Cruiserweight champion)/Billy Kidman vs. The Revolution ("The Innovator of Violence" Tommy Dreamer/Perry Saturn) (w/ The Amazing Red)
Tag team action next as the number-one contenders, Paul London and Billy Kidman, took on Tommy Dreamer and Perry Saturn of the Revolution, who left London and Kidman laid out last week. The Amazing Red was in the corner of the Revolution, which had to weigh on the minds of London and Kidman. Kidman's confidence continues to build with each week, but he still doesn't look like the same Billy Kidman of a few years ago. Halfway through the match, Shaniqua, along with Abyss and the World Tag Team champion Basham Brothers, came out and stood at the top of the ramp to scout Kidman and London a little more closely.

After a competitive match, Kidman and London started gaining the momentum, working over the Revolution with great teamwork, including a plethora of double dropkicks. London brought Dreamer down near the corner with his swinging facebuster as Kidman was up top for the Shooting Star Press. Kidman flew off the top and hit his SSP as London climbed up behind him to hit his version. Before he got a chance though, Abyss shoved him off the top and into the ring in plain view of the referee.

Billy Kidman and Paul London defeated The Revolution (Perry Saturn and Tommy Dreamer) when London defeated Dreamer by disqualification in 0:08:30.
Rating: *** 1/2

It was obvious what Shaniqua's plan was here. As the Bashams and she watched from the top of the ramp, the massive Abyss dismantled the much smaller Paul London and Billy Kidman, tossing them around the ring before laying them both out with a Black Hole Slam apiece. Abyss left the ring as London and Kidman were both wiped out. This has got to hurt their chances going into Retribution, and Shaniqua couldn't be happier.

[After a commercial break, the first thing we hear is "Medal" start over the sound system which immediately brings the crowd to its feet. It doesn't take long for the GCW World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle to emerge from the back, the title around his waist. He pauses halfway down the ramp and throws his hands in the air as pyro goes off behind him. As Angle makes his way into the ring, the fans chant "YOU SUCK!" in time with his music. Angle seems unphased by this, as I think he's gotten used to the crowd's sentiments. Angle has a microphone in hand as the music dies down.]

KA: Never fear, your GCW World Heavyweight champion is here to bring a little class and respect to this city of ill-repute!

[Huge crowd boos. Angle doesn't make very many friends wherever he goes, does he?]

KA: This building is called the Cow Palace, and after looking around at some of you fat tubs of crap, I can see why!

[Another huge round of boos.]

KA: No potential Olympic gems like me in here. Now I know I shouldn't even lower myself to compete in a city of moral decay like San Francisco, but I have a point to prove. Ever since Rey Mysterio's cheap win over me a few weeks back, I keep hearing from all directions about how Mysterio has my number. Even after I cleanly and singlehandedly dismantled Mysterio on Explosion just seven days ago... [Crowd boos this blatantly untrue statement] ...making him tap and cry in the middle of the ring, I'm still hearing about how Rey Mysterio Jr. will be the new World Heavyweight champion after Retribution.

[A huge crowd pop as the thought of Mysterio as World Heavyweight champion is something they enjoy.]

KA: What's the matter with you people!? Do you really want Mysterio representing you as champion of the world instead of me, a true American hero? [Thunderous crowd pop] You've got to be frickin' kidding me! He weighs like 80 pounds! How could he possibly be World HEAVYWEIGHT champion!? And he's like 12 years old! You should all be ashamed of yourselves, encouraging the young lad Mysterio like that. You're going to get a 12 year old hurt, you sickos! It's true!

[The crowd is not impressed by Angle's jokes and they let him know about it.]

KA: Remember, whatever happens to Rey Mysterio Jr. this Sunday is your fault, not mine. But being the nice and generous guy I am, I want to give you all a chance, especially Rey Mysterio Jr., to think about this. You're all excited to see Rey Mysterio face me for the World Heavyweight Title, and Mysterio is excited too. But Mysterio, you have to think to yourself, "Is it worth it? Is a shot at the World Title worth the guaranteed punishment my body is going to take? Kurt Angle is an Olympic gold medalist and has the most devastating submission hold in wrestling history, the Ankle Lock, which had me in tears once before. Is it really worth sending myself to an early retirement out of pure greed and ignorance?" Mysterio, I'm going to give you one more good opportunity to see what I am capable of so that you can go to President Niemiller and tell him that you're in over your head, that you want to relinquish your title shot for fear of your health.

[Huge crowd boos yet again. Is this guy serious?]

KA: That's why I am going to issue an open challenge right now to any cruiserweight who wants to take me on in a NON-TITLE match. I want you to watch closely, Mysterio, to how easily I can dismantle a man of your size. So anybody in the back, c'mon! Someone step up to the plate!

[After a brief pause, "Party Up" by DMX plays and out comes "Prime Time" Elix Skipper to a moderate pop. Skipper is still looking to establish his identity and a good showing against the champion could do wonders for him. Angle gives Skipper no chance to get himself set as he jumps in right as he gets in the ring. Referee Petey Pluck calls for the bell.

* * * * *

Match #3
Non-Title Match
Kurt Angle (World Heavyweight champion) vs. "Prime Time" Elix Skipper
Kurt Angle wanted to send a message to Rey Mysterio Jr., but in doing so he was taking Elix Skipper far too lightly, and it nearly cost him on several occasions. Skipper had everything to gain and nothing to lose and he wrestled with that same attitude. Angle expected an easy time here after the first couple of minutes, totally dominating Skipper with his technical wrestling prowess. Angle was getting cocky, going for the Ankle Lock way too early, which Skipper countered by rolling forward, sending Angle through the ropes to the floor. Angle was stunned, but not nearly as stunned as when Skipper jumped on him with an Asai moonsault. It was at this point that we all knew that Angle had a match on his hands.

Skipper pulled out everything in his arsenal to try to put Angle away, knowing this was the biggest match of his GCW career. Skipper knew that if he tried to stay on the mat with Angle, he'd be a goner. That's why Skipper took it to the air as often as he could, connecting far more often than he missed. Skipper got a huge nearfall as he hit the New School ropewalk huracanrana, but Angle somehow managed to get his shoulder up at the last possible moment. The crowd let out a collective "AWWWW!" as they thought Skipper had pulled off the upset of the year. Skipper couldn't believe it as he pleaded his case to Petey Pluck, but replays showed that Angle did get his shoulder up just in time. Skipper grabbed Angle and popped him with a boot to the midsection before going for the Play of the Day, but Angle reversed it with the Angle Slam. Angle wasted no time in locking on the Ankle Lock. Skipper fought as hard as he could, but he had to submit to the vicious hold.

Kurt Angle made Elix Skipper submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:10:11.
Rating: **** 1/4

Kurt Angle grabbed his World Heavyweight Title and celebrated his victory like he had just won another gold medal. Angle finally left after a lengthy celebration. Elix Skipper slowly made it back to his feet, moving very gingerly on his ankle. Skipper was given a standing ovation for his effort tonight, which he seemed taken aback by. A well-deserved ovation for Prime Time, who was a hair away from victory.

Match #4
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Goldust
Chris Benoit has a big match coming up at Retribution, but he had to be careful not to look past the Bizarre One Goldust. Benoit came out with his regular dose of toothless aggression, not giving Goldust a chance to breath. Goldust had to resort to a thumb to the eye to counter Benoit's intensity, and he went on the offensive. Benoit didn't look to be messing around though, countering Goldust's attempt at the Curtain Call with the Crippler Crossface. It looked as though Goldust was going to tap, but we can't know that for sure as RANDY ORTON ran in and blasted Benoit from behind, prompting the disqualification.

Chris Benoit defeated Goldust by disqualification in 0:02:54.
Rating: ** 1/4

Orton stomped away at Benoit, looking to soften him up before Retribution. Orton brought the Crippler to his feet and hit him with several European uppercuts. Orton set Benoit up for the R.K.O., but Benoit shoved him off into the ropes. When Orton bounced back, Benoit went for the Crippler Crossface. Orton fought him off and quickly slid out of the ring before any damage could be done. Orton tried to get the jump on Benoit, but Benoit would have none of it. When these two lock up at Retribution, it's going to be a potential Match of the Year candidate for sure.

[Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas, the World's Greatest Tag Team, are backstage when Matt and Jeff Hardy, the Hardy Boyz, approach them.]

MH: Hey, what's going on, guys?

SB: What's up, Hardyz?

[The four men exchange various handshakes.]

CH: What's the word, fellas?

MH: Jeff and I just wanted to stop by and say good luck at Retribution. The Hardy Boyz and the World's Greatest Tag Team, the two elite teams in GCW, going at it in a match with a shot at the World Tag Team Titles on the line. It doesn't get much better than that.

SB: You got that right.

JH: We wanted to talk to you tonight though, to make sure you guys understand that this Sunday, we're not going to hold anything back. I came to GCW because I wanted to team with my brother and be the World Tag Team champions, and we're going to go balls to the wall to make that happen.

CH: Jeff, don't you worry about a thing. Shelton and I wouldn't want it any other way. We don't call ourselves the World's Greatest Tag Team for nothing, you know. We want to wrestle the best, at their best. And for as hard as you two are going to be wrestling, you can expect us to go just as hard.

MH: And you guys won't be upset when we beat you and go on to wrestle the champs at Trick or Trouble?

[They all share a bit of a laugh.]

SB: As long as you're not too crushed when you're watching Charlie and I become three-time World Tag Team champions in October!

MH: Ha ha. Sure thing, guys. See you Sunday.

[All four share handshakes again as we cut back to the ring.]

[We are back in the ring now where "Y2J" Chris Jericho is already standing. Jericho is still wearing the phony back brace that he had on last week. He also has a microphone in hand.]

CJ: Welcome to MONDAY NIGHT JERICHO!

[As the crowd starts booing Jericho, he holds his back and winces in "pain."]

CJ: As you can see, I am still suffering from this tragic back injury. What happened was I was walking down the road and I saw a burning building. Being the ultimate hero that I am, I quickly ran inside and saved a woman's... cat. The woman was thankful, but in the struggle to get out as the flames and smoke billowed around me, I SEVERELY injured my back. My poor, poor back. Doctors told me that I would never be able to wrestle again.

[At this point, Jericho is getting "choked up."]

CJ: But through hard work and rehab, I have made it back, and not only will I wrestle Low-Ki here tonight, but I will also take on Shawn Michaels at Retribution, and when I defeat that faker, I will complete the greatest comeback story of all-time, babay!

[Low-Ki's music starts and he comes to the ring as Jericho carefully removes his back brace. Referee JD Sanders rings the bell to start the match.]

* * * * *

Match #5
Low-Ki vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho
Despite Chris Jericho's "injury," he seemed to move very well in the ring, obviously disputing his injury claims. Whether Jericho was injured or not, Low-Ki wasn't about to show him any mercy, blasting him with kicks of all kinds. Low-Ki is one of the hardest hitters in the business and Jericho is certainly going to be in need of the whirlpool after this one. Despite taking quite the beating, Jericho is opportunistic to say the least, and he showed that when he ducked out of the way of a huge kick attempt from Ki, and blasted the martial artist with an enziguiri. This stunned Low-Ki enough for Jericho to pick up the clean win.

Chris Jericho pinned Low-Ki after an enziguiri in 0:05:08.
Rating: *** 3/4

As soon as the referee had raised Jericho's hand, he once again winced in "pain," clutching his back. Jericho forced JD Sanders to put the back brace on him and aid him to the back. I don't know who Jericho thinks he is fooling, but mocking Shawn Michaels like this might not be the smartest thing he has ever done. He can make fun all he wants now, but he's going to have to face the music this Sunday.

* * * * *

[Mario Riviera is standing by backstage.]

MR: Hi, Mario Riviera here with an update on the condition of Eddie Guerrero. After speaking with head trainer Barry Tarver throughout the week, I can now report to you that Eddie Guerrero suffered only relatively minor injuries as a result of the vicious attack by Chavo Guerrero Jr. last week. While he did have to get six stitches in his forehead after being busted open with a steel chain, there was early concern that he could have suffered a concussion. I am happy to report that that is not the case and Eddie Guerrero will be ready for his match with Chavo Guerrero Jr. at Retribution.

[At this point, Chavo Guerrero Jr. enters the picture, holding the same steel chain he used to clock Latino Heat with next week.]

CGJr.: So Eddie is going to be ready? That's too bad for him. I tried to help him out, Mario. Even though I told him over and over and over and over again that I was NOT Black Tiger, a claim I still stand by, Eddie persisted. He threw accusation after accusation at me. I am NOT Black Tiger, Mario! Two weeks ago, I was locked in my locker room. I wanted to get out there for the match, but I was trapped. Eddie might not want to believe it and the people might not want to believe it, but it's the truth. I thought I could knock some sense into Eddie last week, but that's not the case. But Mario, if you think what I did last week was bad... [Holds up the chain] you ain't seen nothing yet, vato.

[And with those menacing words, we cut to commercial with Riviera looking as intimidated as ever.]

Match #6
Booker T vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles
Our next match featured Booker T taking on former Television champion AJ Styles. Booker's ribs were still heavily taped after the baseball bat assault he received at the hands of his Retribution opponent, Steve Bradley, a couple of weeks ago. The young Styles focused his attacks on Booker's ribs, showing no remorse for the pain that the Houston native was obviously in. Styles hit a couple of huge backbreakers on Booker before locking him in a Boston crab. Booker T screamed in pain but he showed that he has guts by crawling to the ropes to break the hold.

Styles was frustrated now as he went for his Asai inverted DDT, but Booker moved out of the way and when Styles landed, flattened him with a spin kick. Booker was feeling it now as he took it to the Phenomenal One with hard right hands before dropping him with a spinebuster. Booker got back to a vertical base via Spinaroonie [to the obligatory crowd pop] and set Styles up for the Axe Kick. When Booker went for it, Styles moved out of the way and took Booker down with a spinning lariat. Styles scaled the turnbuckles and made an attempt at the spiral tap, but Booker rolled out of the way just before the point of impact. The wind was knocked out of Styles, and when he got to his feet, he was hunched over gasping for air. Booker cracked him in the back with the Axe Kick, and three seconds later was on his way to the winner's circle.

Booker T pinned AJ Styles with the Axe Kick in 0:06:52.
Rating: *** 1/4

A great victory for Booker T who fought through the pain to pick up a huge duke. Will he have enough left to beat Steve Bradley at Retribution? You know that the sadistic Bradley is going to focus his attack on Booker's ribs, looking to hurt him. Booker T wants revenge though, so whether he's 100% or 50%, you know he is going to take the fight to Steve Bradley.

[A shot of the busy floor at the New York Stock Exchange is shown. That shot transitions into one of John Bradshaw Layfield, in his suit complete with big white cowboy hat, standing in front of the NYSE. He has a big goofy grin on his face. At the bottom of the screen reads "JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD".]

JBL: Right inside this building, the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, I have made a fortune. Through years of study and shrewd business sense, I was able to turn one dollar into thousands. I could easily be on the beach somewhere, laid back, feet propped up, enjoying the life of luxury that only a man with as much money as I have can enjoy. But instead, I'm still right here, trading and selling, making more and more money. It's not the money itself that's the incentive, although I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't nice. No, it's the competition. It's the hunt of knowing which stock or bond to buy, and which to sell. That hunt is exactly why I'm coming to Global Championship Wrestling.

[JBL begins walking toward the camera.]

JBL: I plan on dominating Global Championship Wrestling just like I've dominated the stock market. You're looking at a sure fire choice as to who will be the greatest singles wrestler of all-time. If JBL were a stock, I would buy as many shares as I possibly could. I will be the best, and you can take my word for it. Why? Because I'm John Bradshaw Layfield, and I'm better than you!

JBL laughs and ends the vignette with the same big goofy grin as he started it. Cut to the ring.]

Match #7
Television Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. (c) vs. "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (w/ Daffney/Sean O'Haire)
This was the second time we saw the Prophecy tonight as earlier in the night, Christopher Daniels "strongly advised" GCW President Ryan Niemiller to hand over the freshly vacated North American Title to Sean O'Haire instead of the scheduled tournament. We also found out that Daniels was getting the mandatory Television Title shot against current champion and top contender to the World Heavyweight Title, Rey Mysterio Jr. Daniels might not be on Mr. Niemiller's good side, but you can't question the man's abilities in the ring. Also with Sean O'Haire and Daffney in his corner, things were certainly not in the favor of Rey Mysterio Jr. Early on, Mysterio dumped Daniels to the floor and jumped on him with a twisting plancha. Mysterio tossed Daniels back in the ring but before he could get back in, Daffney came up from behind and distracted him. Mysterio yelled at Daffney to get away from him, which left him wide open to be clotheslined hard on the floor by Sean O'Haire! O'Haire thought he got away with one, but referee Antonio Santangelo saw it. Rather than disqualify Daniels, which he had every right to, Santangelo ejected Sean O'Haire from ringside! O'Haire and Daniels both lost it, threatening Santangelo, but the ref stood his ground and O'Haire went to the back.

With O'Haire gone, Daniels had to do it alone, and he more than held his own against the Television champion. This was a great match all-around, as both men exchanged the upperhand back and forth all the way until the end. The turning point in this one came after Daniels hit the Angel's Wing, but Mysterio was barely able to get his shoulder up. Daniels climbed to the top and went for the Best Moonsault Ever, but Mysterio got his knees up and smacked them right into the ribs of the Fallen Angel. Both men struggled to their feet where Mysterio garnered the advantage, taking Daniels down with armdrags, including one where Daniels ended up throat first on the middle rope. Mysterio hit the far ropes and nailed Daniels with the 6-1-9. Mysterio remained on the apron and called for the West Coast Pop, bringing the packed house at the Cow Palace to its feet. Daffney jumped up on the apron trying to save her leader by distracting the referee. With Santangelo distracted, KURT ANGLE ran out to the ring and pulled Mysterio off the apron, causing him to smack the floor hard! Angle wasn't done though as he grabbed Mysterio by the head and smashed it into the ringsteps! Angle picked Mysterio up and put him back in the ring before running back up the ramp where he acted casually as if he did nothing! Mysterio was out of it as Christopher Daniels recovered and gave Mysterio his Last Rites and we have a new Television champion once again.

Christopher Daniels pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the Last Rites in 0:09:13.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Christopher Daniels won the GCW Television Title.)

Christopher Daniels grabbed the Television Title and had Daffney put it around his waist while Kurt Angle talked smack to Rey Mysterio Jr. from the top of the ramp. Kurt Angle wants to take no chances of losing his World Heavyweight Title to Mysterio at Retribution, trying to completely demoralize the number-one contender. If anything, he may have got Mysterio all the more motivated to take his title.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. Brock Lesnar
We had just one match to go, and it was a big one as "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels took on Brock Lesnar in our main event. One has to question the mindset of Shawn Michaels, taking on a match with a bad back against a man who can hurt you when you're entirely healthy. Michaels is a man of pride though, and he will take on anybody, anywhere, any time. This match started out with Lesnar asserting himself, tossing Michaels around the ring. From the beginning it looked like Brock Lesnar was going to make easy work out of the hurting veteran, but the Heartbreak Kid is as tenacious as they come, and he fought back with all that he had. Not long after this match started, CHRIS JERICHO came down to ringside, still wearing that phony back brace. Jericho was obviously looking to interfere or distract Michaels, which is why MONTY BROWN, Lesnar's opponent this Sunday, came down to counter Jericho's presence. This was going to be a clean match whether Chris Jericho liked it or not.

As this match wore on, Michaels hit Lesnar with a lot of offense, more than anyone has been able to the past couple of months, but he couldn't seem to find the big move to keep Lesnar down. Lesnar continually cut off Michaels' momentum with a big move like an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. The longer this match went, the more it was benefiting Lesnar as HBK's back continued to bug him more and more. Lesnar started putting bodylocks and bearhugs on HBK, trying to squeeze the life out of him. But HBK has shown time and time again throughout his career that he just won't die. Michaels fought out of a bearhug by Lesnar with a couple of shots to the head and a poke to the eye. HBK went at Lesnar with chops and right hands before sending Lesnar into the ropes and hitting a backdrop. Michaels went up top and hit a flying elbowdrop which got him a 2 and a half count. Lesnar wouldn't stay down though as he got back to his feet. The Showstopper went for a flying forearm, but Lesnar ducked and Michaels hit referee Jimmy Appleseed instead, knocking him out.

Shawn Michaels checked on the ref, which allowed Lesnar to nail him from behind. Lesnar whipped HBK into the ropes, but Michaels fired back with a flying forearm, this time connecting with it. Michaels kipped up and started tuning up the band for the Sweet Chin Music. Before Shawn Michaels could go for it, Chris Jericho grabbed his foot and tripped HBK up. Monty Brown wasn't going to let that happen as he ran around and hit Jericho from behind with the Pounce, knocking Y2J hard into the guardrail! Jericho was wiped out on the outside as HBK stood back up on the inside. He quickly went for the Sweet Chin Music, but the distraction gave Lesnar enough time to recover, duck, and flatten HBK with a huge power bomb. Jimmy Appleseed was stirring, and the power bomb did enough damage to Michaels' back to put him down for the three count.

Brock Lesnar pinned Shawn Michaels after a power bomb in 0:16:43.
Rating: ****

Brock Lesnar had won, but he definitely had to work hard for it. He didn't get much time to bask in his own glory though, as Monty Brown jumped in the ring and the Alpha Male leveled Brock Lesnar with the POUNCE! The only man left standing as we went off the air was Monty Brown. It must be noted that Chris Jericho was holding his back on the floor. Could karma have caught up to him and he's now injured for real? We won't know for sure until match time at Retribution.

Speaking of Retribution, the card has been finalized, and what a big event it will be! Let's take a look at the card for the spectacular event that will emanate from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon:

World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

World Tag Team Title Match - The Basham Brothers (c) vs. Billy Kidman/Cruiserweight champion Paul London

"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton

"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho

Number-One Contenders Match - The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. The Hardy Boyz
