GWC Thursday Night Throwdown - November 18, 2004

{GWC Thursday Night Throwdown kicks off with pyro and flashes on a jumbotron. The images were match clips of all the encounters between Doug Basham and Chris Benoit as well as Rob Van Dam being named a number one contender. The camera then fades into the ring as Doug Basham's music is playing and he is in the ring with a mic.}

Basham: President Murphy, get out here right now!

{President Murphy then appears at the top of the ramp with a mic in hand}

PM: What can I do for you tonight Mr. Basham?...

Basham: Last week, you demanded that I face Chris Benoit and I beat his ass once again so this week I am making a demand...

PM: And what might that...

{"Walk" by Pantera begins to play and out walks "Mr. Thursday Night" Rob Van Dam also with a mic}

Van Dam: I just wanted to let you know that you had better get focused Dougie Doug, cuz in less than two weeks me and you are going to meet up in Seattle. There's gonna be alot on the line, its gonna be a match to determine who will be the very first GWC World Champion.

Basham: What's your point pipsqueek?!...

Van Dam: Why all the hostility man? Take a Chill Pill or something. I am just letting you know that you seem a little distracted with Chris Benoit and President Murphy and all the BOOs from MY fans...

PM: Your fans? I believe they are here to see more than just Rob Van Dam, there are plenty of great wrestlers here each and every Thursday Night.

Van Dam: While that may be true noone else can claim to be {In sync with the fans} MR...THURSDAY...NIGHT!

{Fans go nuts. Basham looks pissed off.}

Basham: Well tonight I was going to demand that I got to name a stipulation for our Title bout, but now I'm just demanding that I get to kick your ass here tonight!

PM: Well I think that's a great idea. Tonight in your special main event: Doug Basham vs. Rob Van Dam winner gets to pick the stipulation for The GWC World Title Match at Live For The Moment...

{The Crowd is buzzing after this announcement.}

- Maven vs. Michael Shane w/Traci -

This match never really got going as The Dudley Clan complete with Spike and Paul Heyman hit the ring. Michael Shane and Traci escaped but Maven wasn't so lucky. The Dudleys really let him have it until Chuck Palumbo ran in for the save, but he wasn't alone, Rey Misterio came to help out. The Dudleys headed for higher grounds as we went to a commercial break.

- European Title Battle Royal #1 -

The Match started off with Carlito Caribbean Cool, Maven, Bubba Ray Dudley, and James Storm and Dusty Rhodes in the ring. The match started with Bubba pounding away at an already hurt Maven and Storm and Rhodes working over Cool. The battle waged on until about the 4 minute mark when Dusty Rhodes snuck up behind Maven who had gotten the upperhand on Bubba and dumped him to the outside. With Maven eliminated we were down to four men.

Bubba took this opportunity to help out CCC in his battle against Rhodes and Storm. Bubba took on Storm while CCC distracted Dusty. Storm did all he could but Bubba Ray was just to big and eventually Storm succumbed to a Bubba Bomb and was tossed out.

Dusty then was being double teamed by Bubba and Cool. Dusty fought back with a vengeance. He connected with roundhouse rights to both men followed by suplexes on both men. He hit the Bionic Elbow on Cool and knocked him over the top with a stiff roundhouse right to the jaw.

Bubba recovered but he was to late as Dusty was laying into him with chops and slaps and everthing else Dusty had to offer. Dusty managed to eliminate Bubba with a monster clothesline next to the ropes.

Dusty Rhodes won the 5 man battle royal and moves on to Live For The Moment where he will battle for the GWC European Title, He also has a booked match against Colt Cabana that night.

Match Rating: **** 1/4

- North American Title Battle Royal #1 -
Chris Harris, William Regal, Petey Williams, Test, and D-Von Dudley were the contestants. This battle moved fast as the first elimination came at the 1:43 mark when D-Von caught Regal with a reverse neck breaker and tossed him over the top.

Then Petey Williams went on a rampage as he eliminated D-Von and Harris in less then two minutes from one another.

This left Petey to face off against the much larger Test. They battled back and forth for nearly 4 minutes but in the end Williams had to much energy as he simply out hustled the big man. Test was caught sleeping and was dumped over the top.

Petey Williams won and will face off with the winner of one of the other battle royals at Live For The Moment live from Seattle Washington.

Match Rating: ** 1/4

{Next up is the European Title Battle Royal #2, Dusty having won the first one was at ringside for commentary, he promoted his match with Colt Cabana, and said he hopes Cabana wins here tonight so he can stomp a mudhole in him for something more than personal joy.}

- European Title Battle Royal #2 -
Chuck Palumbo, Rey Misterio, Colt Cabana, Kurt Angle, and the newly signed Nick Dinsmore did battle in this one. Misterio and Palumbo had an alliance based on their dislike for the Dudleys. They double teamed Kurt Angle, but an accidental elbow from Palumbo sent Misterio heading for the back as he fell over the top rope.

Palumbo turned to apologize and he paid for this as Angle dumped him over the top, Palumbo and Misterio shook hands and walked to the back together. This left Angle, Dinsmore, and Cabana.

Colt was pointing at Dusty and belittling him when Angle went to dump him over the top Colt held on and when he got back in the ring he stormed across it and dumped both Angle and Dinsmore over the top and then spit on them as Dusty left the broadcast booth and hit the ring. Dusty and Colt battled back and forth until America's Most Wanted came in to give Dusty the advantage. Cabana was left in a heap of pain on the outside of the ring as Dusty and his boys celebrated.

Colt Cabana won and will face off against Dusty Rhodes for more than just pride at Live For The Moment, they will battle for the GWC European Title.

Match Rating: ** 1/4

- North American Title Battle Royal #2 -
Chris Benoit, Lance Storm, Spike Dudley, Michael Shane, and the debuting Rene Dupree

Spike Dudley didn't have a long night as Maven hit the ring and attacked him. Michael Shane saw this opportunity and dumped both men to the outside where they were met by Palumbo, Misterio, and The Dudley Boys, all six men battled into the dressing room.

It wouldn't take long before Shane would strike again this time connecting with a superkick on Rene Dupree sending him over the top.

A minute later Chris Benoit tossed Lance Storm over the top and engaged in battle with Michael Shane. These two put on a good showcase over the next 5 minutes or so, but eventually Shane couldn't handle Benoit as Benoit was hell bent on sending Doug Basham a message. Shane was easy prey for "The Rabid Wolverine".

Benoit's victory gave us an all Canadian battle for the GWC North American Title when he goes one on one with Petey Williams...

{We Cut to a commercial as Basham is seen getting amped up for his match. When we return we see Rob Van Dam stretching out as the main event is next.}

- Winner Picks The Stipulation For The World Title Match -
- "The Machine" Doug Basham vs. "Mr. Thursday Night" Rob Van Dam -

This battle has been a long time coming as Basham has lost sight of the overall picture and was focused on what RVD claimed was the wrong person to be focused on, Chris Benoit. The fight went on for some time before Benoit made his presence known to Basham by clobbering him with a vicious set of clotheslines while Van Dam had the ref distracted. Basham fought back sending Benoit into a ring post and climbed back in focused on Van Dam. However, Benoit's presence was simply too much for Basham and Van Dam caught him with the Van Daminator followed by a 5 Star Frog Splash for the win. Benoit looked on with a smile as Basham looked irate. Van Dam left the arena victorious and needing to come up with a stipulation.

Match Rating: ** 3/4

- Nick Dinsmore and Rene Dupree have been signed to long term deals and will become regulars on Thursday Night Throwdown. These two are sure to be a delight to watch in the ring...

- As Rumors circulate about who is next to be signed, I can tell you this America's Most Wanted will have a mystery opponent at Live For The Moment. Talk with The Havana Pitbulls have broken down, but that is who the GWC Brass really wanted to bring in. But who knows who they will find instead...

Nice little start to the circuit here. A decent aray of guys and some nice descriptive work to build up the characters - obvious that'll take time to really develop, but looking good so far. After the result here, I'm guessing Basham takes the gold at Live for the Moment.

Are you booking, by the way?
Murphy42782Posted on 11/11/04 at 23:19:55

No I am not booking. I believe in working with what TNM gives me. I like to have to think about alternate scenarios heading into a card if things dont turn out like I wish. Plus if I had my way it wouldve been a Benoit/Angle World Title Match. I figured Basham was straight squashed and RVD would fall in a hard fought battle, but just the opposite happened.

Another good show.  Benoit and Petey Williams should be a good match.  And as much as I would love to see RVD win the title, I think Basham and Benoit could make for an intense title match.  Speaking of booking, I follow the same logic...work with what TNM gives you.  Sometimes i can be a pain, but it is also fun at the same time.
