DWF 16/07/07
91 | Posted on 10/30/04 at 01:21:29 Card Information: Held in: ELK'S LODGE Location: QUEENS, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES Date/Time: 16/07/07 at 8:00pm Matches/Interviews booked: 8 Arena Capacity: 10000 Attendance: 9961 Ticket Buy Rate: 99.61% TV ratings: 2% Approximently Viewers: 6000000 If Billy Kidman was frustrated at having to face Dynamite Kid in a steel cage this Sunday, his frustration was multiplied several times over tonight. Kidman and Corino were in the ring today on the Kings Court with King Kanyon to do an interview. Kidman covered his recent title win as he regained the worlds title from Dynamite Kid, the cage match this Sunday and then Matt Hardys decision to book this match under these circumstances. Matt Hardy isn't one to stand idly by at criticism and appeared to tell Kidman that he'd only be defending the title this Sunday if he was still the champion by which time, as he'd have to defend the title TONIGHT! A shocked Kidman wanted to know who he was forced into facing, and Hardy responded by telling him that, purely on the basis that he'd actually shown up for once, Rob Van Dam would be the challenger tonight, a decision that infuriated the champ. Edge & Christian (Edge and Christian) defeated The Miracle Violence Connection (Steve Williams and Terry Gordy) when Christian pinned S. Williams with the Unprettier in 0:08:44. Rating: **** That segment was followed by Edge and Christian taking on the Miracle Violence Connection, in a seemingly unrelated match. That's the way it was for the most part, as both teams took it to one another in order to climb the tag team ladder. Edge and Christian are former champions while the MVC are former Intercontinental tag team champions, so both teams know what it's like to possess the gold, and the desire to once again be champs incited all four men to go at it full pelt. In the end it was Edge and Christian who got the duke after some quick moves and a double dropkick that sent Gordy out of the ring, followed by the Unprettier from Christian on Williams when the doctor tried to nail Edge. A big win for Edge and Christian who climb the ladder, but not a good night for the Miracles, which was about to get worse. Throwing somewhat of a fit backstage, the two started throwing cups of coffee around, some of which hit Billy Kidmans car. An already infuriated Kidman was even madder now and brought Clarence Mason with him to pass a subpoena on to them, suing for gross misappropriation. Not a happy set of campers. Brad Armstrong pinned Super Calo with the Peoples Elbow in 0:05:01. Rating: *** (Brad Armstrong retained the Intercontinental Title.) Victory too for Brad Armstrong, a fairly straight forward win over Super Calo (who in fairness rallied quite respectively at one stage). Armstrong retained his gold here, but whatever it is he has to say this Sunday sounds important, even if it doubtless will be delivered in the style of The Rock. Cest la vie. Brian Pillman pinned Phil Lafon after a flying cross body press in 0:06:47. Rating: **** Steve Corino is also defending his title this Sunday against Brian Pillman. Pillman was in action today against Phil LaFon. Ever since Doug Furnas was injured, LaFon was been temporarily going solo, and has been undefeated in that span of time, so he was certainly not one to taken lightly. Pillman though is on a mission. After all the criticisms and labels fired off at him by Pretty Perfect, holding tag team gold has given him a new motivation, and the chance to hold his first ever singles gold, despite having been in the DWF since day one over six and a half years ago, has fuelled him even more. LaFon was game but on this night, he was never going to compete with Pillman, who laid him to waste. Following the win, Steve Corino wandered out, mic in hand, with a few choice words for Pillman. Corino noted that the "lame cannon" (such wit) was no match for a master of the old school arts and would prove as much this Sunday. Pillman had a huge grin on his face the whole time, so confident that this is to be his night, so much so that he jumped Steve Corino backstage and gave him a pounding, before dropping a wodden pallet on his leg, leaving Corino in some serious pain. Hopefully for Pillmans sake, he hasn't injured Corino too badly (and no word on his condition - he may be absolutely fine, he may be very badly hurt) for if he is, there's the risk of there not being a match at all. As far as we know right now, the match is all set to go ahead. Elimination Match: Larry Zbyszko, John Cena, Paul Roma and Hunter Hearst-Helmsley beat Lance Storm, Sean O'Haire, Joey Matthews and Chris Jericho 4 falls to 3: x O'Haire beat Roma via the Seanton Bomb in 0:02:34 x Hearst-Helmsley beat Matthews via the Pedigree in 0:06:16 x J. Cena beat Jericho via the Eighth Deadly Sin in 0:09:09 x L. Storm beat Hearst-Helmsley via the Maple Leaf in 0:11:42 x double countout (O'Haire and J. Cena) in 0:18:45 x Larry Z beat L. Storm via a roll up in 0:19:09 Survivors: Larry Zbyszko Rating: ** 1/2 The most intriguing factor of the King of the Ring Pay-Per-View every year is who exactly is going to be king. One old tradition in the DWF is the Survivor Series match that preceeds the PPV featuring the eight qualifiers. We haven't seen this match for a couple of years, and of the three past matches, the eventual tournament winner has had mixed luck, with the two occassion that the eventual KOTR was not a survivor, Rob Van Dam was. No RVD in the tournament this year, does this mean that the man who will win the King of the Ring would be a survivor tonight, or are we reading between the lines? In any case, the sides were set up, as Chris Jericho, Sean O'Haire, Lance Storm and Joey Matthews faced up to John Cena, Larry Zbyszko, Hunter Hearst-Helmsley and Paul Roma. Roma unsurprisingly was first out, as O'Haire cleaned house on all four members of the opposing side who jumped in and flattened Roma with the Seanton Bomb. Your next King of the Ring...? Don't count out Helmsley though, as he demonstrated his wily abilities. Despite his ridiculous snobbish attitude he is quite the competitor and blocked an attempted backdrop by Inspector Joey Matthews to nail the Pedigree and eliminate him. Chris Jericho is a heavy favourite as a former champion and was having a great spell in there, but as he dominated John Cena, Larry Zbyszko took a shot at him from the apron. Jericho turned round and decked him but Cena was back up and took advantage of the distraction to hit the Eighth Deadly Sin for the pin. Cena is the sort of guy to take advantage of ANY opening given to him and he cannot be disregarded. Don't disregard Lance Storm either, the man is climbing the ladder both in the singles and tag team ranks at a great pace. Storm was finding life tough with Helmsley, but as Helmsley set up for the Pedigree, Storm scooped up the legs and locked on the Maple Leaf for the submission. A technical wizard, Storm is the sort of guy who can find a way to beat anyone, and usually does. If Storm is a mat wrestler, then Sean O'Haire is definitely a hard hitting brawler who can adapt to any environment in an instance. He adapted to John Cenas cheap heel tactics quickly enough and took it to him, but did so to such an extent that the two spilt to the floor and both were counted out. O'Haire was hot, the sort of attitude that has seen him win so many matches yet cost him the few he has lost. On this occasion, it was costly. Hopping onto the apron, O'Haire motioned to Cena and reared his arm back, accidentally catching Lance Storm in the back of the head with an elbow. Thinking quick, Larry Zbyszko nipped in, rolled him up and got the winning pin, leaving him as sole survivor. Storm now was hot and spun O'Haire around and gave him some heated words. O'Haire responded in a similar fashion and officials quickly spilled out to make sure no altercation took place. The two have been friends in the past but as long as both men are in the tournament, there are no friendships here. Larry Zbyszko meanwhile continues his phenominal run, now adding Lance Storm to an ever growing and increasingly impressive list of victims. Anyone fancy ruling him out? Devon Storm pinned Jody Fleisch with the Thunderclap Brainbuster in 0:09:04. Rating: **** Billy Kidman did have one supporter during the evening, as Jody Fleisch came lobbying into his dressing room. Siding with Kidman, Fleisch declared Hardys decision as disgusting and that Kidman should never have to defend the title under such circumstances. Soon after, Fleisch was thrown into a match with Devon Storm, following off last weeks tag team encounter when they were on opposite sides. Storm was handling himself quite nicely and looked on for a win as he lifted Fleisch up for the Thunderclap Brainbuster. Fleisch countered and landed down by his feet, next to the ropes. As luck would have it, Matt Hardy had come down to ringside and was stood on the apron right next to Fleisch. Hardy belted him with a right hand and now Storm could hit the Thunderclap Brainbuster for the victory. Storm looked a little perturbed at the way he'd won, but wasn't about to kick up a fuss. Hardy meanwhile climbed into the ring and began stomping down on the helpless Fleisch before yelling at him that he was commissioner and that wasn't ever going to change. Now Hardy has been a very popular commissioner for a long time, but we're seeing a more agressive and angry side to him now Fleisch has gotten Hardy so wound up. Don Muraco pinned Kid Kash after a powerslam in 0:01:11. Rating: ** One of the other big matches this Sunday sees Raven and Jerry Lynn take on Don Muraco and Jeff Hardy. Once again, Don has put an opponent off the shelf as doctors have ordered Raven, following last weeks beating at the hands of Muraco, to stay out of action until the King of the Ring. So while Raven recuperated at home, he watched Don Muraco squash another opponent, this time a gamey Kid Kash. Kash was able to fire off a few moves at the start of the match after Muraco missed a charge into the corner. They barely fazed Muraco though and pretty soon, they were scraping Kash off the mat, another victim of Muracos Tombstone Piledriver. Muraco continued though, delivering a second piledriver. Signalling for a third, Jerry Lynn ran out with a steel chair in hand, and Muraco wisely went to the outside, smiling evily at Lynn who sneered just as evily back. The question is, can Lynn and Raven take down the massive Muraco this Sunday or will they both be put back on the shelf permanently. Chris Benoit made Bobby Eaton submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:14:11. Rating: **** 1/4 Chris Benoit faces former Triple Threat associate Masato Tanaka this Sunday, and warmed up tonight against Bobby Eaton. Perhas 'warmed up' isn't the right expression to use as Eaton was on form here and the two engaged in a fantastic display of out and out wrestling, exchanging holds, counter holds and reversals that kept us all guessing. In the end, Benoit showed why he is a four time worlds heavyweight champion. catching Eaton with the Crossface after having kicked out of a roll up just moments earlier. A superb display from Benoit who has momentum going into King of the Ring, as of course does Masato Tanaka following his success at International Incident. Eaton meanwhile has found life tough going since dropping the Television Title a couple of months ago, and he finally lost it today. Dean Malenko had some disparaging words for Eaton as Eaton limped by, saying that Eaton put in a performance so humiliating that he's surprised he lasted as long with Benoit as Malenko himself had just recently. Eaton, who had worked so hard out there, wasn't taking that and laid into Malenko before officials, once again, were there to seperate them. Eaton was fuming though, no way was he accepting such harsh and unnecessary criticism like that. Billy Kidman pinned Rob Van Dam with the Shooting Star Press in 0:14:32. Rating: **** 1/4 (Billy Kidman retained the Heavyweight Title.) So the title match came, and sure enough Van Dam had shown up, and even seemed somewhat aware of what he was fighting for. Indeed, Van Dam is a former champion himself, so he knows what it takes. Billy Kidman has come so far in such a short space of time though, and knows every trick in the book. It was Van Dam who made the big mistake though. Bringing a chair into the ring for the Van Daminator, against the refs wishes, Kidman caught the offending weapon and ducked the oncoming spin kick, then used it to crack Van Dams skull. The ref, perhaps decreeing that it was RVD who brought the chair into the ring in the first place, let it go. Shooting Star Press, 1-2-3, Kidman will be facing Dynamite Kid this Sunday. Indeed, as Kidman celebrated the win, Dynamite Kid came out from behind the curtain and stood in the aisle, with the show going off air soon after the two of them locked eyes and began staring each other down. Card rating: *** 1/2 King of the Ring - final card Billy Kidman (c) vs Dynamite Kid (world heavyweight title, steel cage) Steve Corino (c) vs Brian Pillman (television title) Jerry Lynn & Raven vs Don Muraco & Jeff Hardy Masato Tanaka vs Chris Benoit **Official Debut** La Resistance vs Hayabusa & Tajiri King of the Ring Tournament Chris Jericho vs Larry Zbyszko Lance Storm vs Paul Roma Joey Matthews vs John Cena Sean O'Haire vs Hunter Hearst-Helmsley **Plus an interview with Brad Armstrong and a special announcement from Matt Hardy |
