91 | Posted on 10/25/04 at 15:34:42 Card Information: Held in: ALAMO DOME Location: TEXAS, UNITED STATES Date/Time: 09/07/07 at 8:00pm Matches/Interviews booked: 10 Arena Capacity: 10000 Attendance: 10000 A Sold Out Arena. Ticket Buy Rate: 100% TV ratings: 2.2% Approximently Viewers: 6600000 Lance Storm pinned Curt Hennig after a German suplex in 0:09:07. Rating: **** The King of the Ring tournament is shaping up nicely. With five men having already qualified, the final three were to be decided today. It all opened up with two men that have been more used to tag team wrestling for the past few years, Lance Storm and Curt Hennig. The advantage had to go to Storm as Hennig has participated in barely any singles action whilst Storm has still had his fair share of success (if you remember, he took Steve Corino to the limit at International Incident). That was the way it ended up, with Storm and Hennig putting on an excellent clinic before Storm pulled out the victory with a picture perfect, pardon the pun, German suplex. Hayabusa & Tajiri (Hayabusa and Tajiri) and The Pitbulls (Pitbull #1 and Pitbull #2) defeated Los Guerreros (Chavo Classic, Eddie Guerrero, Hector Guerrero and Mando Guerrero) when Hayabusa pinned Classic with the Star Dust Press in 0:10:06. Rating: *** 1/4 Los Guerreros had a bad night, going down to the Pitbulls and the team of Hayabusa and Tajiri. The Guerrero clan started off well enough, singling out Tajiri for punishment but when Tajiri made the tag to one of the Pitbulls, the writing was on the wall. The Pitbulls gave out their usual brand of wreckage in the ring as the two of them mowed through the Guerreros one by one, then allowed Hayabusa to finish off Chavo Classic for the pin. Good showing by all four men. The Pitbulls as domineering as ever, and Hayabusa and Tajiri showed good tenacity mixed with some great offence, something that they'll need in two weeks time when they face off against the team making their official debut in the DWF, La Resistance. Low Ki pinned Juventud Guerrera with the Ki Krusher '99 in 0:06:29. Rating: **** (Low Ki retained the Cruiserweight Title.) Also in action, Low Ki made a successful defense of his cruiserweight title as he got past Juventud Guerrera. Juvi made life difficult for Low Ki, but Low Ki came through with a win. Don Muraco pinned La Parka Jr. with the Tombstone in 0:04:18. Rating: *** We saw Don Muraco here in action taking on La Parka. La Parka had healed up nicely since last week and was out for revenge. La Parka started off by strutting around whilst playing air guitar, irritating Muraco. Muraco dived in but La Parka ducked a clothesline and peppered Muraco with a series of dropkicks that rocked the big man. When he missed one, after Muraco swatted him aside, it was effectively all over. Muraco took him apart and annihlated the poor luchadore, finishing him off with the same ease that he demonstrated a few weeks back when he did the same to Chavo Guerrero. The question is can ANYBODY stop him? Scott Putski pinned Paul Roma with the German Suplex in 0:02:32. Rating: *** The next King of the Ring qualifier was supposed to be Masato Tanaka taking on Paul Roma. An easy win for Tanaka, 1-2-3, no fuss. Not exactly. After Roma made his ever ridiculous entrance, we waited for Tanaka to enter, but nothing doing. After a brief pause, we saw shots on the video wall of Benoit attacking Tanaka backstage with whatever he could lay his hands on. After throwing all manner of objects at him, Benoit locked on the Crossface until officials swarmed in and broke it up. Since the show went off the air, we can confirm that the booking commitee has decided that Benoit and Tanaka shall square off at King of the Ring. But what of Roma? Sadly, with the ref in the ring having no choice, he had to award the match to Roma as a result of a forfeit. Paul Roma is in the King of the Ring. After we got back from commercial, Roma was still hanging around, celebrating his first victory in many many months (if you could really call it a victory) and said he was on such a roll, he would take on ANYBODY, right here, right now. Well, he's an idiot and he got what was coming to him when arch rival Scott Putski came out, looking to add another win to his record which has improved no end this year since Roma and the Posse gave him several easy wins. Putski made short work of Roma, finishing it in a couple of minutes. On the back of this, Roma will doubtless have no chance in the King of the Ring, just under two weeks away. Jody Fleisch and Kurt Angle defeated Devon Storm and Matt Hardy when Angle pinned M. Hardy with the Olympic Slam in 0:13:38. Rating: **** 1/4 Kurt Angle made an appearance on the Kings Court today to berate whichever countries were on his mind (Bulgaria, Zambia and New Zealand, for whatever reason) and soon turned things to the heavyweight title. Despite having lost his shot, Angle wanted to know why he wasn't being considered as the number one contender. Jody Fleisch then interrupted proceedings to agree with him, saying that Dynamite had brought shame onto the DWF and Angle deserves his shot. Now usually Angle would hate having to talk to a "limey" like Fleisch, but perhaps the smooth talking and flattery won him over... perhaps he just plum forgot where Fleisch is from, but in any event it turned into a little Matt Hardy badmouthing session, brought to an end when Matt Hardy came out to demand a stop to this, saying that neither Angle, nor Fleisch, were deserving of challenging for the world title and he was ordering they end this segment immediately. Instead of ending it, Hardy became the recipient of a two on one attack as Angle and Fleisch laid into him, with King Kanyon gleefully laying in a few shots too. One man watching on who couldn't stand it any more was Devon Storm who ran in, chair in hand, to sending the hooligans in the ring into a quick exit. When we returned from commercial, we saw that an inpromtu tag match had come about with Fleisch and Angle taking on Matt and Devon. Fleisch and Hardy had eyes only for each other and it was a cheap shot from the apron by Fleisch that allowed Angle to put away Hardy for the three count. John Cena pinned Test with the Eighth Deadly Sin in 0:07:01. Rating: ** 3/4 One man already in the tournament proper is John Cena. Ever impressive, he made his way through one of the bigger men in the DWF, Test. Cena put his victory down to the fact he broke into Tests house and stole his doormat, so whenever Test went home, he'd have to traipse mud all around his house, thus making him angry and throwing him off his game. As "unnecessarily evil" as that was, Cena is, as always, on a great streak. Will he follow it up come PPV time? Sean O'Haire pinned Dean Malenko with the Seanton Bomb in 0:07:24. Rating: ** 3/4 The final qualifier was a much tighter one as Sean O'Haire took on Dean Malenko in a tough to call match. O'Haires run in the last year has been well documented, scoring wins left, right and centre, beating some of the biggest names in the industry. Whilst the number of losses he's had could probably be counted up on one hand, Malenko is indeed the man who registered one of those losses for O'Haire, something that we were reminded of before the match, that match having taken place at last years King of the Ring. This years event will be a different story though as O'Haire came out the winner, using his power to overcome Malenkos stubborn defensive tactics on the mat that were coming off very well. Raven defeated Jeff Hardy by disqualification in 0:03:05. Rating: * 1/2 Tonights main event was somewhat of a mismatch - Raven taking on Jeff Hardy in a match where everybody expected Raven to make short work of Jeff. With Jerry Lynn making a promotional appearance elsewhere in the country and Muraco having left after his match, there was no threat of any chicanery... or so we thought. Minutes into the match, Muraco came out from behind the curtain, his absence nothing more than a rouse. Raven saw it and could do nothing when Muraco, after waiting a few moments, jumped into the ring and attacked Raven for a blatant DQ. This one wasn't about the win though, this was about hurting Raven before the tag match at King of the Ring, and Muraco and Jeff did an effective number. Things got out of hand though, and Muraco, having already given Raven one Tombstone, proceeded to give him another one, spiked by Jeff Hardy, onto a steel chair. As we went off air, there was no doubt that Raven looked hurt. How badly? We don't know yet, but hopefully not so much that he won't be at the King of the Ring in just thirteen days time. Card rating: *** Match observations: The main event for King of the Ring is set, and perhaps Billy Kidman got more than he bargained for. Kidman and Corino came out midway through the show to a very negative reaction from everyone in attendance. To them though, they could not care less, now Kidman had regained the heavyweight title of the world. Kidman engaged in a little gloating session, noting how he'd beaten Dynamite from pillar to post and now the title was back where it belonged. Steve Corino also had a few words for Brian Pillman now he's got to defend the TV title against him at King of the Ring. Corino said he wasn't afraid and went as far as to say the term 'Loose Cannon' was a misnomer as these days, Pillman is about as loose as Mary Whitehouse. Both men thus confident of their abilities and they'd let the world know - just as they looked like they were about to leave though, out came Dynamite Kid, mic in hand. Dynamite pointed out, much like Kidman did a little over a week ago, that when a champion loses his gold, he has thirty days to request an automatic rematch. Kidman knew where this was heading and was furious, knowing that as he pulled the exact same manouvere recently, there was nothing he could do. A microphone wasn't all Dynamite had in his hand, he also had a contract that commissioner Matt Hardy had drawn up and confirmed, stating that at the King of the Ring, Dynamite will indeed get his rematch with Billy Kidman. And, just to make sure the same sort of events that we saw last week don't occur, this one will be in the confines of a fifteen foot high steel cage. Now Kidman was absolutely livid, and he left the ring to walk up towards Dynamite, shouting abuse and protests, while Dynamite smiled and left. Corino stayed behind to argue with someone at ringside about something, probably to sue for emotional distress or something, when out popped Brian Pillman from the crowd to smack him in the back with a steel chair, before leaving through the crowd on the opposite side, a huge grin plastered across his face after what happened. Corino wasn't too badly hit and was up quick, but the anger was certainly there. We now have our eight qualifiers for King of the Ring and the brackets have been drawn up. Lance Storm will take on Paul Roma in the quarter final. Storm is a big name, with singles and tag success to his name and is a former Intercontinental Champion. Having had a few brief flirts with the main event, he'd like nothing more than to solidify a spot there by winning the tournament. Roma meanwhile has to be considered the rank outsider, but stranger things have happened... The winner of that will go on to the semis to meet the winner of Chris Jericho and Larry Zbyszko. Jericho is a former world champion, and one of the best world champs we've ever had, and can be so dominating when he wants to. Larry on the other hand is on a roll, with wins over Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio and, controversially, Jerry Lynn in recent weeks. Jericho is certainly in the league of those other names, so a Larry win isn't as far fetched as you might think. In the other half of the brackets, Sean O'Haire will take on Hunter Hearst-Helmsley. Helmsley is the other former world champion in the bunch and while he may have slipped down the ladder a bit since returning as the American Blueblood and generally acting like a moron, he's still showing signs of that ability to put people away at a moments notice, and the Pedigree is one of the best finishers in the game. O'Haire, on the other hand, has been so well documented for so long now and looks to be just one step away from being a permanent fixture in the main events. As the biggest man in the tournament, this could be his place to begin a new era for him. Finally John Cena go one on one with Joey Matthews. Since the Young Lions opened their detective agency a couple of months back, York and Matthews have shown a new spirit to their game, highlights by Matthews upsetting Mando Guerrero on his way to the finals. Cena meanwhile has been the man at the last two King of the Rings. Two years ago he showed up in the DWF with Bobby Eaton and won the tag titles out of nowhere and last year he very nearly shocked the world when he came within an eyelash of defeating Jerry Lynn for the world title, having made an impression leading up to the big match like none of Lynns other challengers were able to in a reign lasting over a year. This seems to be his favourite event, can he prove it by becoming the seventh King of the Ring award winner... Brad Armstrong was also seen sitting at ringside for the entire show, occasionally giving the eye (and eyebrow) to those in action, all the time showing off his Intercontinental title. Suffice to say the coming weeks for Brad will be much harder than just sitting around observing the competition. |
