PWA - Pure Wrestling Association
"Where the 'W' stands for 'Wrestling'"

The PWA is home to the finest athletes and wrestlers from all four corners of the globe, with a focus on technical and scientific grappling. You will not find better action inside the squared circle anywhere else on earth!

PWA TV Episode 1

The show opened with PWA president Peter Abram announcing a 24-man tournament to crown the inaugural PWA World Champion. The participants were randomly drawn into six groups of four. Everyone in each group would wrestle each other once, with points awarded dependant on the outcome of each bout - three points for a victory, one for a draw and none for a defeat. There is a fifteen minute time limit on each match in the group stage. This random draw produced the following groups:

Group A:
Roderick Strong
AJ Styles
Alex Shelley
Petey Williams

Group B:
Chris Jericho
Yuji Nagata
Bryan Danielson
Bobby Quance

Group C:
CM Punk
Eddie Guerrero
Doug Williams
Christopher Daniels

Group D:
Elix Skipper
Jun Akiyama
B-Boy
Trent Acid

Group E:
James Tighe
Chris Sabin
Kurt Angle
Homicide

Group F:
Jerry Lynn
Low Ki
Spanky
Chris Benoit

Some of the prospective bouts this draw threw out were mouth-watering. The top two in each group will advance, with the rest of the World Championship Tournament breaking down as follows:

Second round (not elimination triangle matches):
(1) Winner group A vs. Runner-up group B vs. Winner group C
(2) Runner-up group A vs. Winner group B vs. Runner-up group C
(3) Winner group D vs. Runner-up group E vs. Winner group F
(4) Runner-up group D vs. Winner group E vs. Runner-up group F

Third Round:
(5) Survivor (i) match 1 vs. Survivor (ii) match 1
(6) Survivor (i) match 2 vs. Survivor (ii) match 2
(7) Survivor (i) match 3 vs. Survivor (ii) match 3
(8) Survivor (i) match 4 vs. Survivor (ii) match 4

Semi Finals:
(9) Winner match 5 vs. Winner match 8

Match observations:
A wonderful night of wrestling action and what a way to kick off this gruelling and demanding tournament!

AJ Styles and Petey Williams hit the ground running with both picking up three points in Group A after victories over Roderick Strong and Alex Shelley. The Phenomenal One is a lot of experts' pick to go all the way in the tourney and he looked in sublime form as he effortlessly disposed of Strong with the Styles Clash. Williams didn't have such a smooth time against Shelley, but his foe finally succumbed to what may currently be the coolest move in wrestling, the Canadian Destroyer, in a hard fought clash. Styles and Williams will meet in phase 2 of the group stage with the winner assured of a place in the second round of the tournament. Conversely, the loser of the Shelley-Strong bout will be eliminated.

Group B appears as if it will be extremely competitive and Y2J is already clear on top after defeating Yuji Nagata. The immensely talented New Japan superstar passed out after spending over a minute in the Walls Of Jericho. Bobby Quance and Bryan Danielson shared two points after both getting counted out whilst trading a barrage of forearm smashes in the crowd. It was a disappointing end to a hotly contested encounter. Nagata will get the chance to put his first points on the board in phase 2 when he faces Quance, while Jericho battles the American Dragon.

Next week on PWA TV:
In Group C:
CM Punk vs. Eddie Guerrero
Doug Williams vs. Christopher Daniels

In Group D:
Elix Skipper vs. Jun Akiyama
B-Boy vs. Trent Acid

Really interesting and innovative idea for a tournament.  I like it a lot.  I also like the mix of wrestlers you're using, as it has a good mix of the best of the indies, Japan, TNA, and WWE.  I think you need at least one useless hoss, though.

I was surprised at how short the card was once I got past the description of the tournament.  Four matches isn't a lot, after all, especially compared to some of the circuits posted here.  Then it occurred to me that you were running an hour long show and actually making sure you stayed within it.  That's actually not a bad idea, and it should be interesting to see what you do with it.

As for the structure of the writeup itself, I'd like to see a bit more analysis of the matches than you provided.  You seemed mainly focused on the fallout of the results, and while that's important, some play by play, match finishes, comments on major spots and the like would do you a lot of good.

For the number of matches you're running each card, you have an extremely large roster.  Will this shrink as the tournament continues?  Or do you plan to feature that many wrestlers with so few matches per card?  Or will cards start getting longer?

Finally, is the circuit booked or unbooked?  It doesn't make much difference, but I like to know anyway. :)

Keep up the good work.

I like it.  Good first card.  I'm a little confused about round three of the tournament though.  I assume you mean that (since they aren't elimination style) the person scoring the fall and the person who wasn't involved in the fall at all move on and face eachother in the forth round.  Correct?

The Petey Williams/AJ Styles match will be one to look forward to in group A.  Also looking forward to CM Punk vs. Daniels, Angle vs. Sabin, and Spanky vs. Benoit

Thanks for the feedback.

The tournament was actually spread over six cards. I have divided up each of these for the hour-long TV shows. So although there were only four matches on this TV show, it was taken from a card which featured the entire first phase of the group stage involving every wrestler on the roster. Not sure if I've explained that too well, but I hope you catch my drift!  :P I'm gonna start posting the cards on TNM UK as well, so hopefully things will become a little clearer! By the way, americamamushi has got the format spot-on. It's similiar to CZW's Best Of The Best.

I take your point regarding the write up of the matches. I will expand on the match highlights, I'm just looking for a style I'm comfortable with right now.

The entire tournament will be unbooked and I'll start storylines and angles depending on what happens. I'll decide whether to keep it unbooked after the champ has been crowned.

Cheers!

I see what you're saying.  You basically held a series of supercards and are parcelling out the matches based on a TV timeslot.  Makes sense to me, and is probably more realistic than a lot of the feds out there.

I like to think that NDW operates on a level much like ROH - it has 3 hour long live shows which are eventually released on VHS and DVD rather than working a fixed timeslot.  It seems to fit the promotion's "large indy fed" feel very well.

Sounds good to me.  Keep postin' em and I'll keep reading 'em.

Just because I like him, I'll predict CM Punk as the first champion.  We shall see, I suppose.
