DWF 04/06/07: Ooh, title change
91 | Posted on 09/11/04 at 02:38:26 Card Information: Held in: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN Location: NEW YORK, UNITED STATES Date/Time: 04/06/07 at 8:00pm Matches/Interviews booked: 9 Arena Capacity: 10000 Attendance: 10000 A Sold Out Arena. Ticket Buy Rate: 100% TV ratings: 3.9% Approximently Viewers: 11700000 Brad Armstrong pinned Hayabusa with the Peoples Elbow in 0:13:16. Rating: **** 1/4 (Brad Armstrong retained the Intercontinental Title.) One title not changing hands tonight, the Intercontinental title. Brad Armstrong is now copying The Rock down to a tee, with mannerisms, catchphrases, dress sense, image and even from tonight his moveset, as Armstrong nailed an impressive win over Hayabusa with the Peoples Elbow finishing. Armstrong quickly cut a promo, chock full of worn catchphrases, and promised a long title reign to come. One man perhaps not agreeing is Devon Storm who in a backstage interview soon after laid out a challenge, saying he had been waiting a year to get his hands on Brad and with Brad now back in the ring, this was finally his chance. The Pitbulls and Scott Putski defeated The Mean Street Posse and Paul Roma when Putski defeated Gas via pinfall in 0:05:23. Rating: * 1/4 Scott Putski got some help against Paul Roma and the Posse as The Pitbulls stepped forth to speed up the slaughter. The Pitbulls decimated their idiot opponents, saving a special beating for the self proclaimed higher power Roma and then dropped Putski, who had taken a few shots moments earlier, onto Pete Gas, whom the Pitbulls had just speared out of his boots, for the win. Hunter Hearst-Helmsley pinned Christian with the Pedigree in 0:06:06. Rating: ** 3/4 Hunter Hearst-Helmsley got a win as well. As big an idiot as he may be, he's been very impressive as of late, racking up a series of wins. Christian was his victim today. Christian turned Helmsley into the Unprettier, only for Helmsley to keep turning and Christian ended up in the Pedigree position. Bamn, one-two-three, and Helmsley wins again. Doug Furnas & Phil Lafon defeated The Rock'n'Roll Express when Furnas pinned R. Gibson after a powerslam in 0:13:41. Doug Furnas suffered a neck injury. He will be out for approximately 9 weeks. Rating: **** 1/4 (Doug Furnas & Phil Lafon won the Tag Team Titles.) We have new tag team champions as Doug Furnas and Phil LaFon upset the Rock'n'Roll Express, though it wasn't entirely through their doing. Earlier in the show, John Cena met them backstage to tell them he'd finally delivered. It was supposed to be The Pitbulls challenging tonight but he'd wrangled a deal and gotten Furnas and LaFon the title shot. With that, he claimed, his work was done, having gotten the pair what he promised and wished them luck with the match. Pretty Perfect made their way to the ring beforehand to sit on commentary however and berate the fact they weren't challenging here as they were the best team, greatest champions ever, blah blah blah, and accused Morton and Gibson of ducking them, thus their support was for the challengers. Soon enough, with Furnas and LaFon controlling Robert Gibson, Edge and Christian made their way down to ringside, perhaps still with something to settle with Furnas and LaFon, perhaps just a little miffed that they defeated F&L at Wrestlefest but weren't challenging. Either way, Pretty Perfect quickly spotted the threat to their supported team and left headset to deal with them. Quickly the two teams began brawling at ringside, and Edge and Hennig ended up on the ring apron. Robert Gibson had just landed a double clothesline on the challengers and looked set to make the hot tag to Morton, when Edge reared back to throw a punch and accidentally hit an errant elbow to Gibson. Gibson was dazed and Furnas scored a powerslam, Morton wasn't quick enough to react and we have ourselves brand new tag team champions. Rey Mysterio defeated Hector Guerrero by disqualification in 0:09:16. Rating: *** Los Guerreros are still causing trouble. Hector Guerrero (he's the one who cheats) gave Rey Mysterio a hard fight, using every traiditonally illegal tactic behind the refs back. A second low blow in the match was caught by the not-so-eagle-eyed official who called for the bell. Hector and Rey mixed it up after, with the rest of the Guerrero clan finally coming out to unbalance the sides and clean Rey out. Rhyno pinned Brian Pillman with the Gore in 0:06:27. Rating: *** Also looking good today was Rhyno, who scored another crushing victory, this one over the on-form Brian Pillman. Rhyno is the sort of guy who NEVER seems to lose, and it's about time he got the chance to step up... Devon Storm pinned Jody Fleisch with the Thunderclap Brainbuster in 0:06:58. Rating: *** 3/4 Devon Storm would also be in action that night after an interview on the Kings Court. The Young Lions appeared on King Kanyons stage in order to demand that Jody Fleisch show himself in order to be questioned on his whereabouts the night that Matt Hardy was attacked and sent to the hospital. Fleisch came out to deny all wrong doing, saying these Angela Lansbury wannabes were bugging him and that Hardy was an idiot for not even exploiting the accident for a sure-fire ratings grabber, something he said the DWF has been distinctly lacking for the last year. Inspector Joey jumped in saying that Matt gave them a message to pass on - if Fleisch started shooting in any way, he was to wrestle that night against the king of the shoot interviews, Devon Storm. Jody was NOT best pleased at that one, even less so when Devon scored a victory. Whilst that might increase Devons chances of a shot at Brad Armstrong, it's got to ignite Jody Fleisch's opinions of Matt Hardys booking skills even more. -------------------------------------------- Midway through the evening, Shane McMahon and Matt Hardy came out with the intention of naming the man who would challenge Billy Kidman for the worlds heavyweight title in three weeks at International Incident but their unveiling was delayed by Don Muraco entering, to "cut out the unnecessary waiting of his introduction" as he put it. Muraco then began promising to do away with Kidman at International Incident and finally claim what is "rightfully his". Before he could go on, Jerry Lyn sprinted out, chair in hand and caught Muraco on the head. A second head-shot followed, dropping Muraco. Lynn waited for him to clamber to his feet before aiming a third, but Muraco blocked by grabbing Lynn by the throat and lifting him up. Before he could plant Lynn on the canvas, Raven ran out with his own chair and caught Muraco on the back. Lynn landed safely on his feet and picked up his chair, and the pair smashed Muraco with a con-chair-to of sorts. Jeff Hardy quickly ran out to pull Muraco out of the ring and the two ran to safety, with Raven and Lynn hot in persuit. McMahon and Matt weren't done yet as it would seem they had someone else in mind for International Incident. Now it was time for Kurt Angle to make his entrance, imploring them to pick him so he could go to the United Kingdom and show them was class was like. It was with that, Shane revealed the REAL number one contender, Dynamite Kid. Angle was appauled to the point of absolute disgust at this decision. Matt Hardy tried to appease him, telling Angle that he would be first in line for a title shot following the PPV, but Angle was still pretty repulsed at the notion that Dynamite Kid was the number one contender over him (yes, the result between them at Wrestlefest had TOTALLY eluded him). Angles night wasn't over as he was attacked coming back down the aisle by a fuming Chris Jericho, still out for revenge after last weeks confrontation. It's somewhat surreal - on one side, the American loving Olympic gold medal winning man who for years has been reveered in the DWF. On the other, Chris Jericho, an angry, bitter Canadian who has been one of the most hated men since day one in the DWF, and it's Jericho who is getting the cheers. The Syndicate defeated Billy Kidman and Steve Corino when Shamrock pinned Corino after a sunset flip in 0:14:12. Rating: **** 1/4 (The Syndicate won the Intercontinental Tag Team Titles.) So Dynamite Kid takes on Billy Kidman at International Incident for the title. Kidman has just come off the Wrestlefest Revenge Tour after three tough title matches with former champion Raven. The first two saw Corino save the title for Kidman via DQ but on the final night, just yesterday, Kidman finally got the clean win (well, clean as in he needed no help - he still cheated). That said, Kidman will be several pounds lighter for this match as the IC tag title belts have been whisked away from him and Corino. Taking on The Syndicate, the team that Kidman and Corino won the belts off for their first reign several months earlier, Kidman and Corino displayed their abilities in a tremendous display, Shamrock and Storm doing everything they can to turn it into their style of match, a style that Steve Corino seemed to be able to deal with particularly well, being the King of Old School (and King of the Ring of course, more on this years tournament to come in the upcoming weeks). As we neared the end, the champs had control. With Lance Storm having been thrown into the steel steps on the floor and thoroughly beaten, Shamrock was left to fight off both men and he tried a last ditch sunset flip on Corino. Corino maintained his balance and Kidman began kicking away at Shamrock until Dynamite Kid ran out to ringside. Kidman was distracted by this, whilst Shamrock continued to try and pull Corino down for the pin. Kidman soon began jawjacking at Dynamite, bringing the ref to come over and try to restore order. Lance Storm gained his senses at ringside and also gained a steel chair (yes, another one) from ringside. With Corino still blocking the sunset flip attempt, Lance was able to sneak in and waffle him around the head with the chair. Corino finally fell into the move and the referee turned round to count the pin, and we have ourselves new champions. Dynamite meanwhile grabbed Kidman by the ankle and held him back while the fall was being counted. Mind games by the future world title challenger perhaps? Card rating: *** 1/2 Match observations: Triple Threat, it would seem, is well and truly no more. We saw clips from last nights Wrestlefest Revenge Tour show where Masato Tanaka and Dean Malenko teamed up against Psychoanalysis. We saw Tanaka and Malenko get into an arguement, culminating in Tanaka turning on Malenko and leaving him to pick up a defeat. Chris Benoit called for the clip to be played, then called out both men in order to settle this. Benoit was disgusted at their recent efforts, disgusted by their lack of victories on the tour and disgusted with their presence in general. Malenko squared up to him and the two began shoving, only for Masato Tanaka to clothesline them both hard and leave by himself. Benoit and Malenko also left seperately, and it looks like Triple Threat has finally crumbled to dust. Where the three of them go from here though is anyones guess. One interesting factoid worth considering - with both tag titles changing hands tonight and all the singles titles switching hands at Wrestlefest, all six DWF titles have changed hands in an eight day spell - easily a record. Also not like me in the slightest, being the sort of guy who rarely has title changes, but hey - things change. |
Snabbit888 | Posted on 09/12/04 at 09:23:23 Good card... interesting to see two title changes in one night, both of your tag titles to boot. With Furnas getting hurt, what happens with the tag titles? Vacate? 30-day rule? I love your stuff. It's cool to see that you have such a history established. It's cool seeing circuits that have been around for 6 or 7 years... it gives them a feel of more importance. And yes, your titles are changing a lot these days. :) |
91 | Posted on 09/12/04 at 18:20:22 Thanks for the comments. I didn't play up on the injury in the match observations here, but I am going to have to do something as two months is a bit too long. Speaking of history, I forgot to mention this is Furnas & LaFons second tag title reign, the first coming some five years previous. As I'm a stickler for longer title reigns, most belts are going to settle down with their respective title holders bar the tag belts (for obvious reasons) and two others that I've got ideas for, one of which will probably be pinging around all over the place for a while. |
Snabbit888 | Posted on 09/15/04 at 09:53:59 Oh, and another thing... I've become such a DWF mark, I actually have updated the title histories file you sent me. :) Now you gotta work on getting me some past cards, sucka! |
