Cerberos's Smackdown 9/2/04

cerberosPosted on 09/03/04 at 04:13:11

Smackdown comes on the air with footage of last weeks main event.  We go into the Smackdown opening credits with the line "If this team loses, there will be hell to pay for the one that gets pinned, I promise you that." From Kurt Angle last week.

In the back we see Kurt Angle with Luther Reigns.

Angle:  Luther you know you screwed up last week.  So I arranged a punishment for you.  Tonight you will be facing...THE BIG SHOW!!

Luther:  What?!

Angle:  No one screws me Luther you should know that.  Now you have a match to prepare for.

We go to the ring where Paul London is facing off with Eddie Guerrero.

Sable came out but didn't get involved.  London looked good against the former WWE Champion.  Guerrero seemed to be a step off his usual crispness.  London got a near fall with a shooting star press but somehow Guerrero kicked out.  London went back to the top but Eddie crotched him.  He then hit a superplex followed by his Frog Splash for the win.

Eddie Guerrero pinned Paul London with the Frog Splash in 0:12:39.
Rating: *** 3/4

After the match London hit a low blow and started to beat on Eddie.  From the back out ran Billy Kidman.  Kidman hit a series of rights and then sent London over the top as we go to break.

Break

After the break we see Kidman with Bill DeMott.

DeMott:  Billy you wanted this time.

Kidman:  I am here to make a challenge to the so called "Star" Paul London.  I see you using a move the Shooting Star Press out there.  That is my move but here is my idea.  Next week we go one on one.  The thing is you have to win with the Shooting Star.  The winner gets the move, the loser can NEVER use it again.  Got the guts?

Kidman storms off as we go to the ring where Johnny Stamboli is taking on John Cena.  As Cena comes out we see Cena being upset by Mordecai on Velocity.  Next out comes the FBI.  This was a good match and yet another upset as The Bull got the win.  Cena had the Bull up for the F-U but Nunzio distracted him.  Cena nailed Nunzio but turned right into the Fuhgetaboutit for the win.

Johnny Stamboli pinned John Cena with the Fuhgetaboutit in 0:06:49.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Nunzio interfered against John Cena.]

After the match Cena snapped and gave Charles Robinson, the official, the F-U.  We then go to break.

Break

The Tag Team Champions, Billy Gunn and Hardcore Holly, dominated the duo of Akio and Sakoda.  Akio got in a few good blows and Sakoda got a near fall with a Roaring Elbow but that was about it.  Holly hit the Hollycaust on Akio while Gunn hit the Fame-Ass-Er for the win.

Hardcore Holly and Billy Gunn defeated Akio and Sakoda when B. Gunn pinned
Sakoda with the Fame-Ass-Er in 0:06:26.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Hardcore Holly and Billy Gunn retained the WWE Tag Team Titles.)

Break

We come back and we see Vince McMahon coming to the ring.

McMahon:  Well for two weeks I have attempted to name the new General Manager but I have been interrupted.  Whoever it was that attacked me last week will not go unpunished as I will find out who di...

Voice:  Excuse me, EXCUSE ME!

Vince turns and we see Paul Heyman coming out.

Heyman:  Excuse me Mr. McMahon.  I don't mean to interrupt but I think I have some important information.

McMahon:  What is it Paul?

Heyman:  Well Mr. McMahon you brought up the attack last week.  I have footage of who did that.

McMahon:  What?

Heyman:  Well this footage is rather rough, something I shot myself last week.  I think the footage speaks for itself.

The video shows Heyman following Sable walking down the hall.  It is of course focused on her butt.  Suddenly we hear a gasp and the camera turns to a monitor where McMahon is laying bleeding.  The camera then goes out of focus.  It comes back and we see the Undertaker coming through the curtain, his fists covered in blood.

Heyman:  I don't want to be a snitch or anything but it just makes me sick when a man of your stature, a millionaire and owner of the company, has to fear for his life.  I personally understand as I too fear for my life when that maniac the Undertaker is around.

McMahon:  Paul, I want to thank you for bring this to my attention.  I will not allow this in my company.  Undertaker...YOUR FI...

Heyman:  Mr. McMahon I think you are being a bit harsh here.  I think that this is something that a General Manager should deal with.  Someone who is not emotionally attached to this attack.

McMahon:  You are right again Paul.  Now when I came out here I had planned on naming myself the GM but I am emotionally involved.  So I now need another choice.  Paul, you have been GM before and you are GM again.

Heyman:  Me sir?  Well I never thought that doing the right thing would get me rewarded.  But I want to assure you that I will do the best job I can and take Smackdown to even HIGHER heights then I did before.

We to go to break with Vince leaving and Heyman getting a devilish smile on his face.

Break

In a great match between Matt Cappotelli and Rey Misterio the champion showed that he can beat the best there is out there as he defeated Rey.  This match went back and forth and saw several near falls.  The entire cruiserweight roster came out and watched from the ramp way.  Misterio hit his 619 late in the match and went for the West Coast Pop but Matt caught him and tried to powerbomb him over the top but Rey held on and both went to the floor.  Both men tried to climb to the top on the same turnbuckle but Matt ended up slamming Rey off.  Matt then hit his Flying Cross Body for the win.

Matt Cappotelli pinned Rey Misterio with the Flying Cross Body Press in 0:15:14
Rating: **** 1/4
(Matt Cappotelli retained the WWE Cruiserweight Title.)

Rey ended up raising Matt's hand as the rest of the cruiserweights watched.

Break

In the back we see Paul Heyman getting settled in his new office.  He pulls a stage hand into the office.

Heyman:  Excuse me, I want you to call this number.  They have all my old stuff in storage there.  I want my old office here next week.

This is when Kurt Angle comes in.

Angle:  Paul, great to hear we have a general manager that is as honest as I am.  Now I wanted to talk about this match I have next week.  I mean you know what the Undertaker can do.  I don't really have to face him for my WWE title do I?

Heyman:  Well Kurt you do...that is assuming he can beat Booker T.  You see he was unfairly kept off Smackdown and any chance of a shot at the title.  So should Booker T defeated the Undertaker he will become the Number One Contender and he will get the shot next week.

Angle:  Really?

Angle gets a smile on his face as we go to the ring where Luther is waiting on the Big Show.

Show dominated Luther in this match.  Luther hit a running boot to Show's chest and got a near fall off an impressive bodyslam but that was about it.  Show ended it with his Show Stopper Chokeslam.  After the match Kurt came out as we went to our last break.

The Big Show pinned Luther Reigns with the Show Stopper in 0:04:08.
Rating: **

Break

Kurt Angle helped Luther up as he went to the announce booth.  Booker looked good in the match but as usual the Undertaker wouldn't stay down.  Near the end of the match Luther jumped up and ran into the ring.  Booker however was ready and gave him a Book End.  As the official was getting Luther out Angle ran in and nailed Taker with his title belt.  Booker then tossed Kurt from the ring.  As Taker got up Booker gave him the Axe Kick for the win.

Booker T pinned The Undertaker with the Axe Kick in 0:10:34.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Kurt Angle interfered against The Undertaker.]

Angle helped Luther to the back with a big smile on his face as we went off the air.  Next week it will be Booker verse Kurt Angle for the World Title!!

Excellent show as usual.

I see Cena has been radically depushed while Stamboli seems to be moving toward the upper midcard in his place.  Interesting idea there.  I've always liked Stamboli.

Kidman vs. London for the Shooting Star Press?  Something tells me I know who's going to win this one.  And it isn't Kidman. ;)

Akio and Sakoda on SmackDown?  Well, fittingly it was only to serve as squash material.  Poor Akio.  He's a great worker, but Sakoda is something of a slouch in the ring.

Heyman is the GM once again!  Excellent!  Nobody kisses ass like Paul E.  Good job capturing that in your promo.

Interesting use of Matt Capotelli, but he desperately needs a better finishing move.  The Flying Cross Body is one of the most basic high flying maneuvers out there, after all.  Since he's Cruiserweight Champ, he deserves better.

Booker vs. Kurt for the title?  Sounds good.  Excellent job by Angle in ducking the challenge of 'Taker.

Thanks for the usual support.  I am trying to decide on what move to use for Matt.  As for Cena, I have a plan for him after the last two loses.  I don't book a lot of the show so I have to kind of roll with it, like Mordecai.  I have always liked Stamboli too.  I am also working on a different gimimck for Akio and Sakoda, just trying to figure out how to debut it....still not sure.  Again thanks for the support.

Maybe give Cappotelli something like a 450 Splash, which I'm fairly sure he can pull off.  Something that is still a little generic, but can be a feasible finish to a match for the Cruiserweight champion.  Could work as a transition until you think of something better.

And I enjoyed this show as well.  I like Cena being de-pushed (hell, after he quit on me in GCW the night after he became the first ever North American champion, I wish ill upon him in other circuits :)), as well as the pushing of Stamboli.  Very cool McMahon/Heyman interaction too.  Heyman's is one sneaky dude. :)  And you're using Angle beautifully.  I really enjoy heel champions like that.

One thing I didn't like was Eddie Guerrero merely being a placesetter for the stuff with London/Kidman tonight.  Nice setup for that match, but Eddie deserves more than curtain jerking and then being an after thought.  He was World champion none too long ago.

Otherwise, solid effort.
cerberosPosted on 09/03/04 at 13:57:53

Yeah I know Eddie should be used better, and I think I do in the future as I am working on the Sept 23rd now.  Basically I am looking for "fresh" feuds for everyone so a few people look weak.  Right now the weakest is JBL or Kenzo Suzuki as I can't seem to find ANYTHING for either.  I have an idear for Kenzo, just have to figure out how to do it as for JBL.....
Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/03/04 at 17:21:18

I personally would reccomend mainly using JBL as a manager type for a young up and coming wrestler.  You can give his protoge a gimmick a lot like Orlando Jordan's, and have JBL "temporarily" put his title ambitions on hold due to finding such a talented and outstanding youngster to shape.  Jon Heidenreich, maybe?  Or Matt Morgan?  Give them a push in the direction of the Tag Team Titles.

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing what (if anything) you do with Carlito Carribean Cool.

You could give him a superkick (or something involving a strike or impact to the neck/head) and call it the "DeCappotater"... get it? Cappotelli?  Decapitation? ;D

... I'll just go sit in the corner now :)
cerberosPosted on 09/03/04 at 20:25:00

That isn't HORRIBLE about Matt.  I am really just waiting for that right inspiration at the moment.  As for Carlito Carribean Cool I have to wait to see him wrestle at least once before I bring him in...if I do.  Never seen him so I am pretty limited at the moment.
