DWF 23/04/07: Hang on, did I get the date right?

91Posted on 07/21/04 at 04:53:22

OK, let's see how this format change thing goes... bear with me, I'm starting slow. I've added post-match descriptions, and the post-show summary remains (since that's there for my benefit as it is, plus there's a ton of other segments not listed with the matches... mainly because I'm not even sure where on the card they come  :P ;) ). Any more suggestions/comments/heaps of praise (you may have to stretch a little there... ) then let us know.

Edge & Christian defeated Triple Threat (Dean Malenko and Masato Tanaka) when
Christian pinned D. Malenko with the Unprettier in 0:13:43.
Rating: ****

Another dissapointing performance from Triple Threat. Whilst they had a fair share of the action, they failed to put E&C away when they had the chance, instead electing to mock their opponents at each turn. Complacency cost them as the Canadian duo soon fought back and Malenkos lack of concentration allowed Christian to block a clothesline and hit the Unprettier whilst Edge quickly peeled off Tanaka and the pin was academic. Edge and Christian may be heading for a match with Furnas and LaFon from here, whilst Triple Threat try to regroup. Again.

Larry Zbyszko pinned Essa Rios with the Shoulderbreaker in 0:06:32.
Rating: ** 1/4

Worst match of the night too.  8) Zbyszko quickly got back from his first loss last night by wrestling Rios to the mat as often as possible. Rios fought back but missed something off the top and Larry finished him off. Exhbition match, really.

Kid Kash pinned Christian York after a rollover in 0:09:18.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Kid Kash retained the Cruiserweight Title.)

Yorks rematch for the title after losing it several months earlier to Kash. High paced match, both men were ON here. York came close but Kash held on resiliently, and reversed a high cross body for the pin (and a sneaky handful of tights). Oddly, York has been in the DWF for the entire six and a half year history, Kash has been in since a few months after the start and this was the best match EVER for BOTH men.

Eddie Guerrero pinned Tajiri with the Frog Splash in 0:09:25.
Rating: *** 3/4

Usually I get four stars out of these two, so I guess someone missed something, somewhere, sometime. Close to call match with both men taking it to the other, but Eddie came out on top after catching Tajiri coming off the ropes with a leg lariat and the Frog Splash finishes (and another hooking of the tights... hmmm). And Eddie follows it up by challenging Chavo Jnr for a match at Wrestlefest, but there's more on that in the summary.

The Rock'n'Roll Express defeated
Los Guerreros (Hector Guerrero and Mando Guerrero) when R. Gibson pinned
H. Guerrero with the Flying Legdrop in 0:12:12.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The Rock'n'Roll Express retained the Tag Team Titles.)

Whoops, probably shouldn't have booked the two Los Guerrero matches back to back. In any case, Hector and Mando cheat relentlessly throughout, in the end Ricky Morton gives up playing Ricky Morton and makes the hot tag and the usual Rock'n'Roll final stages takes place with them retaining the title. Nice little showcase for the champs. And Pretty Perfect follow this up by hyping their tag title match.

Lance Storm made Chris Jericho submit to the Maple Leaf in 0:11:45.
Rating: ****

Slight upset here in the Pride of Canada tournament. After a good all round mix of action, Jericho begins to get things swinging his way, only for Storm to roll through the Lion Tamer into the Maple Leaf and Jericho taps out ultra quickly for the Storm win.

Alex Wright pinned Rey Mysterio with the Deutsch Suplex in 0:07:47.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Alex Wright retained the Television Title.)

Nothing particularly noteable here. Good effort from Rey but he misses the 619 and the West Coast Pop and Wright hits his version of the release German suplex to score the victory.

La Parka Jr. pinned Jody Fleisch with the Asai Moonsault Bodyblock in 0:05:59.
Rating: *** 1/4

After Fleisch finishes his "I should be commissioner" spiel (again, I'm not copying and pasting everything in my nice, neat summary just yet  :P ), he spends the match hitting a big move, followed by trying to call out Shane McMahon to hand him commissionership, and the repeated ignorance of his opponent allows La Parka to hit his finisher out of nowhere for yet another upset win for La Parka.

Raven pinned Chris Benoit with the Evenflow in 0:13:33.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Raven retained the Heavyweight Title.)

Oooh, I expected greatness here. Oh well. Benoit tries to wear down Raven from the start while the champ counters by fighting his way out, rather than playing Benoit at his own game. As it happens, Benoit leaves himself open while trying to force Raven to the mat for the Crossface. Raven grabs the head and one Evenflow later, Raven gets another win.

Card rating: *** 1/2

Match observations:

Raven retained his title tonight and the match will be official now as Raven
defends his world title against Billy Kidman in five weeks at Wrestlefest.
Next week will see the official contract signing, but there was a little
prelude to that today which we shall get to shortly.

Last nights title match saw men interfere against all three competitors,
leading seemingly now to three big Wrestlefest encounters. Kicking off the show
was Shane McMahon making a rare appearance to call out Kurt Angle. Shane warned
Kurt concerning his recent actions, stating that those from foreign countries
or foreign backgrounds shouldn't have to feel threatened by Angles "activist"
behaviour as of late, and fined Angle for his xenephobic remarks and actions.
One man not about to stand back and let Angle get away with a fine was Dynamite
Kid, who came out to confront Angle after Angle cost him the title last night.
Shane quickly stepped in to prevent any physical action taking place, but
Dynamite was here to challenge Angle to a match at Wrestlefest, vowing to rip
him limb from limb. Angle accepted, before refering to the Declaration of
Independence and the Boston tea party, then citing Dynamite Kid as a modern
day Benedict Arnold, making his own promises that he would rid the DWF of this
British scum. Shane immediately doubled Angles fine on the spot, but Angle
didn't care as he's happy to stand up for these supposed beliefs he has.

Confrontation #2 - the Kings Court. King Kanyon brought out what is fast
becoming one of his favourite guests, Don Muraco (wise choice of friends), as
Kanyon got to interview him for the second night in a row. Kanyon, Muraco and
Jeff Hardy all had a big mutual admiration society before Muraco gloated over
costing Jerry Lynn the title last night (a slightly dubious claim, but he had
a hand I guess). Muraco noted that last night was yet another example of Muraco
taking out Lynn, and Lynn still ducking him.

Muraco then gave us several cases of him trying to get Lynn to sign a match
only for Lynn to ignore it - 25th June 2006, Muraco gets disqualified in an
elimination match after striking Lynn with a chair several times. 26th June
2006, Lynn promises to "get even" with Muraco later, but never lives up to this
promise. 24th July 2006, Muraco is paid off by John Cena to attack Jerry Lynn.
Muraco proceeds to drop him ribs first on the guardrail not once, but twice.
2nd August 2006, Lynn again makes promises to get even with Muraco, that are
not followed up on. 28th August 2006, Don Muraco and Jeff Hardy jump Lynn when
Lynn is entering for a title defense. Muraco drops him twice more onto the
guardrail as well as Tombstoning him on the ramp. For seven months, Muraco
claims to have sat back to wait for Lynn to claim the initiative, but when
Lynn didn't respond, Muraco took it upon himself to take action in the Royal
Rumble and he's not going to wait any longer, so another challenge has been
made for Wrestlefest. Lynn didn't hang about and came out right away, steel
chair in hand. Lynn lept into the ring, swinging wildly. Muraco and Hardy make
a quick exit. Kanyon was, however, a touch slow, and took one to the back
followed by another one to the head. Lynn then unfolded the chair and sat it
over Kanyon, trapping him on the canvas by the neck. Calmly picking up a mic,
Lynn accepted the challenge and the match will be on for Wrestlefest.

The third and final confrontation was much simpler - Billy Kidman came out,
picked up a mic and said that he wasn't going to bother with long winded
monologues, and just wanted Raven to come out right here, right now. Raven
obliged, and Kidman quickly aired his thoughts. First of all, with the contract
signing coming up next week, Kidman warned of past contract signings and noted
that Clarence Mason was already preparing a subpoena to go ahead if Raven were
to even lay a hand on him at the signing. Second of all, if Raven were to break
ANY rules at Wrestlefest that helped him retain the title, he would hit Raven
with a lawsuit of mind boggling proportions. Thirdly, all the potential
lawsuits wouldn't end up making a difference as, in Kidmans mind, the title
was guarenteed to switch hands. Raven wisely didn't try and strike Kidman,
instead stating that Kidman was living in a farcical wonderland and the
title wasn't going anyway. Raven finished by stating that after Wrestlefest,
the damage done to Kidmans sole shall be lifted... nevermore.

It wasn't over for the evening yet for Raven as he still had a big title
defense against Chris Benoit. Chris Benoits reward for an impressive victory
over Test was not only three points in the Pride of Canada tournament, but a
title shot as well.

Benoit had problems of his own, as Malenko and Tanaka went down to yet another
defeat today, continuing their astonishing run of bad form. Edge and Christian
scored the win (and hinted at a possible match with Furnas and LaFon soon)
and Benoit was fuming, lambasting his teammates for failing so badly, pointing
out a performance last night he considered appauling as Dean Malenko got
squashed so quickly by Brian Pillman in the tag team turmoil. Benoit told
Malenko that he was to go to Shane McMahon and request a match at Wrestlefest
with Pillman and get a little revenge.

Benoit also had to consider the latest Pride of Canada clash as Lance Storm
scored a mild surprise on Chris Jericho, rolling through the Lion Tamer and
getting the Maple Leaf for the submission win, putting both Benoit and Storm
on three points after one match with Jericho and Test yet to score. All four
men have two matches to go, and of course the winner shall receive a special
presentation at Wrestlefest, which takes place in Canada.

So the title match. Raven was facing perhaps his hardest title defense (bar
perhaps the two men he had to face yesterday). Benoit went to the mat, leaving
Raven to use his wily tactics and slight strength advantage to fight his way
through Benoit. In the end, Benoit lost concentration for just a moment,
clamping Ravens arm, he tried to pull him down into the Crossface. Raven
resisted and as Benoit pulled harder, he left himself unprotected for an
Evenflow from Raven which got the win.

The tag team titles are set to be on the line as the Rock'n'Roll Express
defend against the new number one contenders, Pretty Perfect in a hugely
anticipated rematch. Morton and Gibson had an extremely tough challenge today
as Hector and Mando Guerrero pushed them to the limit, particularly with their
rampant cheating (distracting the ref, distracting the illegal man, choking
the guy with the tag rope, double teaming... the list goes on). In the end,
the champions retained, but were soon met by Pretty Perfect who came out at
the far end of the aisle to run their mouths and go on about how perfect they
are, how they were robbed of the titles in the first place, how the Express
have ducked them since winning the belts and how they will take "their" belts
back at Wrestlefest. Maybe they will...

A better night for one member of the Guerrero clan as Eddie scored a good win
over Tajiri, but Eddie wasn't done there, as he went on to state how proud
Gory Guerrero is of the four brothers, but how ashamed he is of Chavo Jr., so
Eddie is promising to avenge his fathers wishes and take his nephew down at
Wrestlefest in a match we've awaited for a while now.

Kid Kash will also be defending the cruiserweight title, but no opponent has
yet been lined up. It won't be Christian York by the looks of things as Kid
Kash went through him. York previously brought up their past feud, noting that
he was down to a lean 218 and there was no way Kash would be able to fatten
him up now. Perhaps he was too light for his own good as Kash looked in good
form today in victory.

Alex Wright defended his TV title against Rey Mysterio today. There was
nothing particularly noteworthy about the match, but Wrights after-match speech
on how living in America was making him sicker and sicker by the day (those
were the only fragments of English we were able to pick up from the interview)
was certainly worth mentioning. Good job Kurt Angle had left the building...

Finally Jody Fleisch is still rambling on about wanting to be the commissioner,
and has challenged Shane McMahon to come out next week and defend his current
standing on the commissionership, if he's got the guts. Perhaps Fleisch
should have his mind on wrestling as on numerous occassions during his match
today with La Parka, he stopped to hail himself as the next commissioner,
allowing La Parka to snatch a victory out of nowhere. Fleisch was absolutely
flabbergasted at the result and as La Parka danced off, he had yet another
upset win under his belt.

There is no 23rd month . . . Standards for dates are Month/Day/Year.

I haven't the foggiest what date 23/04/07 is supposed to be.
91Posted on 07/21/04 at 05:15:26

I'm British.
xsouporheroxPosted on 07/21/04 at 07:04:06

Yeah America isn't the only country on eath. For Pete's sakes we don't even use the metric system. What kind of idiot elitists are we?
AnubisPosted on 07/21/04 at 07:25:28

None of that answers my question.
xsouporheroxPosted on 07/21/04 at 07:27:27

Well, I'm no an expert on foreign dates. But either it is April 23, 2007 or July 23rd, 2004.
91Posted on 07/21/04 at 15:52:00

Hey, a record number of responses for one post.

Of course, not a single one of them actually mentioned the show itself, but that's besides the point.

Anyway, the remark I made in the title was actually because when I did the show and typed in the date, I suddenly realised it might have supposed to been the 30th, and I couldn't be arsed to check until after I posted. As it is, I was right, but since it's been brought up, it's ddmmyy over here.

Mind you, I am slightly baffled that you didn't have ANY idea what date it was supposed to be. Surely common logic would immediately suggest it was one of the dates xsouporherox suggested (it's the former).

Now, if anyone else responds, you're not allowed to talk about anything connected with dates. :P
xsouporheroxPosted on 07/21/04 at 17:58:52

In a card related note, is it just me, or is Raven/Benoit one of those perenial feuds that you can slip in anywhere and it works?
91Posted on 07/21/04 at 18:14:34

Yeah, come to think of it, the two have the versatility and styles to gel quite nicely in a feud. The match here was just a one off, but now that you've brought it up, I may well keep the idea in mind for future use.
AnubisPosted on 07/21/04 at 23:45:48

Yeah, the card was cool too. 8)

I can't believe Vince wants to sue e-feds supposedly for copyright infringement.  WWE stole several ideas from my e-fed back in 1999, the bastard.  I hate that guy.  He thinks he owns the world.  Sorry, it's not copyright infringement if someone's not profiting from it.
xsouporheroxPosted on 07/22/04 at 00:29:05

Again, there is nothing new under the sun.
