(WWAW) A New Hope...? - Card #1

WYLTNPosted on 06/26/04 at 17:48:31

(Note: I didn't keep match highlights for any of these matches, so I don't remember a lot of things leading up to the finish.  Therefore, this recap of the first card will be short.  However, starting with the tournament on Card #2, I did keep full match highlights, so I know what went down during the match.)

WWAW: A New Hope? - Card #1
From the Masonic Temple in Rock Island, Illinois.
Released on Smart Mark Video

The show kicked off with a high-flying match that had already brought the crowd to their feet during the introductions!

Match #1
AJ Styles and Matt Sydal vs. Christopher Daniels and Trent Acid

Though it should've been longer, this match went from the ground to the sky in a hurry, as all four men would soon tumble to the outside with a series of dives.  The fans were on their feet once again by the end of the match, as each man whipped out their high-impact moves.  The end of the match came when Daniels was hit with a Frankensteiner from Sydal out of the ropes, but Acid ran in and broke up the three count to the chagrin of the fans.  The fans would soon explode, however, as Acid's interjection brought Styles into the ring, and he beat on Acid to keep him isolated from the ring.  Sydal pointed to the near turnbuckle, and the fans cheered as Matt climbed to the top, a dazed Daniels (who had already tooking one nasty blow to the head falling back on a chair during the dive sequence) turning around as Sydal somersaulted off the top rope, nailing the Fallen Angel with a Dragon Rana!  Acid and Styles had stumbled to the floor by this time, fighting in front of the fans; Acid tried to slide into the ring to save his partner, but Styles dragged him right back out by his shiny pant leg and proceeded to give him a ROARING ELBOW as the referee counted

By the end of that match, the WWAW fans in attendance understood that the organization had changed considerably since its original inception so long ago on television.  This change was enforced further by the WWAW Commissioner (who remained nameless, at least for now) coming down to the ring and talking with the fans.  He explained that, towards the end of WWAW's run on television, they ran into some serious financial trouble.  Each show was simply costing far too much, and considering they aired so many programs per week, it was hard to cut back now and still not suffer losses.  So WWAW went under, and stayed under for quite some time, until now.  The Commissioner promised all of the fans that if they stuck behind WWAW, they would not regret it, as they would try to bring in the best talent that professional wrestling has to offer!  The gracious fans roared with their approval, standing again and showering not only the commissioner, but the entire WWAW with appreciation for what they just saw in the ring between Sydal/Styles and Acid/Daniels, and also what they think they're going to see for the rest of the night.

Match #2
Roderick Strong vs. Jimmy Rave

Many of those in attendance seemed expectant that this match would add to the pace already set earlier in the night by the opening high-flyer tag match, but they were unfortunately left disappointed, at least for the time being.  Rave had control for the first minutes of the match, but when he hit a standing moonsault to the delight of the crowd, most of the fans did not see Roderick Strong's elbow hit the mat at an awkward angle.  Strong was able to kick out at two from the standing moonsault, but was obviously hindered, especially since his elbows--and his arms, for that matter--were used frequently for his many variations of the backbreaker.  This injury served to only incite Roderick, however, as he took control from that point on, dominating Rave and eventually nailing a HARD backbreaker that seemed to almost break Rave in half.  Roderick went for the pin, and the referee counted the academic

Although trainers came out after the match to check on Roderick Strong, they made sure to get Strong out of the ringside area (to a round of applause from the crowd, despite Strong angering the crowd with some of his pre-match antics) quickly so that the next match could begin, the second and final tag team match on the card.

Match #3
Iceberg and Batista vs. Colt Cabana and Delirious

Truly, this was a styles clash of an amazing kind.  The brick wall formed by the bodies of Iceberg and Batista was a sight to behold, while Cabana and

Delirious hammed it up with the fans, putting a smile on the faces of the fans...until Iceberg and Batista entered together and gave the crowd a look at what will undoubtedly be the biggest tag team involved in the tag team tournament next week.

As for the match itself, the match went much longer than the opening tag, mostly because the big men were methodical in their destruction of the much smaller team and its smallest member, Delirious.  The assault from both Iceberg and Batista on the lovable Delirious was enough to encourage the crowd to get behind Delirious and give him some kind of advantage against the well-hated opposition.  When Batista signaled for the Demon Bomb and brought Delirious off the canvas, Delirious unleashed a desperation kick to the midsection of Batista...

...but Batista blocked it!

And in a flash, Delirious wiped the cocky, evil smile off Batista's face with a wicked enzugiri, smacking the back of Batista's head!  The fans hooted and hollered as Delirious looked towards his corner, Colt Cabana coming closer and closer with every passing second, still looking back to make sure that Batista wasn't going to come back and knock out the small man's lights.  Batista tagged in Iceberg, and the BIIIIIG man stepped through the ropes, making a beeline for Delirious...

...right as Delirious tagged in "Classic!"

The fans were in a frenzy at this point, and Colt cleaned house, giving Iceberg some picture-perfect right hands and at least stunning him, though failing to take the "No Pain Train" down.  Batista got back to his feet as well, but Cabana got a head of steam and extended his arm, taking Batista DOWN with a lariat that had the momentum of Cabana AND the fans behind it!  Batista rolled to the outside to rethink some things, as Cabana seemed ready to go after Batista--but Iceberg struck him from behind with a clubbing blow, silencing the rowdy fans.  However, Cabana turned around and tried to go to blows with Iceberg, but he would have none of that, overpowering Cabana and bringing him right back to the center of the ring as Batista went back up on the apron.  Delirious was still sucking wind, having been dominated for a good ten minutes by two of the most powerful men in the WWAW today, and after a sick chokeslam from Iceberg only got a count of two on Colt, a frustrated 'Berg went to the corner again, tagging in Batista as he looked to...well, fuck some shit up.  Cabana was a sitting duck, turning right around into a standing headscissors as Batista leaned over, hoisted Colt up and dropped him with the Demon Bomb!  Delirious seemed ready to jump back into the match to save his partner, but Iceberg had other thoughts, bouncing off the far ropes and hurdling towards the cruiserweight, slamming into him and waffling him with an elbow as Delirious went flying into the first and second row of fans, who were gracious enough to at least break his fall as the ref counted

The fans were disappointed that the underdogs didn't come out on top in this match, but still applauded the efforts of Cabana and Delirious nonetheless, knowing that they would get a second chance in the WWAW Tag Team Title Tournament next week from the Bettendorf Community Center.

After this match, the WWAW Commissioner came out again and explained Roderick Strong's elbow injury, claiming that he will likely be cleared to wrestle for the tag team tournament.

"Roderick Strong suffered an elbow injury. He will be out for approximately 1 card."

On the subject of that tournament, the Commissioner said that the brackets weren't quite ready, but they would be by the time the show started next week.  And with that, the Commissioner was gone again as the next match got underway!

Match #4
Randy Orton vs. John Cena
No Holds Barred

This match seemed out of place for both competitors, but Orton was more than ready to rip off his opponent's head after Cena laid down a rap, making several references questioning Orton's sexual preference.  Before the bell had even rung, Randy was beating on Cena, and the fight was on!  There wasn't much technical about this bout, but the crowd loved it nonetheless.  The action quickly spilled to the outside and senior referee Johnny Wisdom was powerless to do anything more than follow these two men around the crowd!  Every fan in the Masonic Temple got to see the action come their way, and by the time it was all said and done, Orton had busted open Cena by chucking the rapping strongman into a wall!  Finally, Referee Wisdom convinced Orton to take the action back to the ring by explaining that pinfalls could only happen in the ring, as the Legend Killer dragged the bloody Cena back to the ring and tossed him in, immediately putting on a lateral press...but only for TWO!

Back in the ring, John seemed to be more at home, surprisingly, and started to make his comeback against Randy.  The fans watched excitedly as Cena entertained them with his repetoire, pumping up his "kicks" and hitting the Five-Knuckle Shuffle, but Orton rolled out of the ring to avoid a pinfall.  The man who specializes in thuganomics didn't take too kindly to this, leaving the ring and grabbing a chair from the crowd.  Orton rose to his feet and the fans did as well to watch; but Orton wasn't on his feet for long when Cena came around and slammed a chair into the back of Randy, the fans roaring their approval!  John threw the chair back towards the member of the audience he stole it from, and tossed Orton back in the ring--the match seemed to be over, but when Cena went for the pinfall, the Legend Killer somehow managed to get his shoulder up before the count of three!  The fans didn't appreciate the resilency of Orton, but John remained on offense...but when Cena tried to bring Orton back to his feet, Randy unleashed a brutal uppercut right between the legs of the rapper!

Although it wasn't the cleanest trick in the book, it certainly was legal in this kind of match.  The tables were turned, and that was the important factor.  Orton worked towards the R.K.O., and after a few moments it seemed that he would capitalize on that lone low blow, looking for the Ace Crusher to end the match...

...but Cena pushed Orton into the ropes!  John tried to bend over for the F-U, but Orton brought his boot up, kicking Cena in the face and bringing him to a vertical base as Orton bashed the rapper with a lariat!  Cena was down on the mat and Randy went for the cover, hooking the leg...but only for a two count!

To say the least, Orton was frustrated!  Randy seemed ready to grab a chair himself, or even look for a table to put John through, but then he looked at the near corner and got a crazy idea.  Sure enough, Randy began to scale to the top rope, looking back to make sure Cena, Ph.D remained on the canvas, at least for the time being.  On the top rope, Randy perched, Cena slowly getting to his feet.  John was dazed as he turned around and Orton flew off the top rope, hurdling towards Cena...

...but Cena caught him and spun him around, slamming him down with a powerslam and hooking the leg, immediately going for the cover!

After the match, the fans were on their feet in appreciation for a very fine hardcore brawl, and a hell of a way to end the first half of the show!  After Cena had gone to the back, the fans started a silly chant towards the losing Orton.

"YOU GOT SERVED!"
"YOU GOT SERVED!"
"YOU GOT SERVED!"
"YOU GOT SERVED!"
"YOU GOT SERVED!"

Orton wasn't very receptive to the chant referencing one of the worst movies of all-time and certainly the worst dancing movie of all-time, yelling at the fans and almost getting into it with one certain vocal fan who not only seemed to be chanting loud but also rather inebriated...fortunately, WWAW Security (aka local wrestlers) were waiting to keep Orton and the fan separate as the Legend Killer headed to the back.

INTERMISSION

Part 2 coming up:

Chris Hero vs. Shelton Benjamin
Homicide vs. Alex Shelley
American Dragon vs. B-Boy
And a special main event that WWAW fans won't believe!

(Yes, I know that the intermission is a copout for my lazy ass, but read the first part while I work on the second part, I just wanted to have something to post regarding the WWAW since I've let it lay dormant for so long.)

I was much more surprised by Iceberg/Batista and Cabana/Delirious pulling in **** 1/4.  I couldn't believe that such a styles clash as that one was so well received by TNM.

Well Cabana is pretty easily in the top ten workers outside the WWE in America now, and Delirious can bump like anything, so that helps.

Match #5
Chris Hero vs. Shelton Benjamin

Intermission ended, and the fans were ready to get back into the action as Chris Hero went up against Shelton Benjamin.  Benjamin seemed to play off the crowd when he made his entrance, but he quickly turned on the fans with the oldest trick in the book; smacking a drink out of the hand of one of the fans and sending it all over the Masonic Temple floor!

As for the match itself, the crowd was behind Chris Hero all the way, as Benjamin and Hero kept their wrestling on the ground for the first few minutes, quickly working up a pace and switching to more high-impact moves!  The match never got off the ground, however, and before the crowd knew it, Benjamin went for his splash in the corner, but that was ill-advised as Hero moved out of the way!  A stunned Benjamin stumbled back...right into the Hero's Welcome!  Pin!

Match #6
Alex Shelley vs. Homicide

Since I was watching this on video tape, the tape's quality got a little shaky here and I wasn't able to catch a good portion of this match between Shelley and the Notorious 187.  The ending was certainly unexpected, though, as Homicide blocked a Shellshock attempt into a bodyslam, falling to his knees and pinning Shelley's shoulders down with the said knees to get a quick three count!  Shelley wasn't happy with the result, complaining about a fast count from Mitch Pain, and Mitch was given a Shellshock to the delight of the crowd!

Homicide pinned Alex Shelley after a bodyslam in 0:11:15.
Rating: ****

Match #7
American Dragon vs. B-Boy

The quality picked up here on the tape, and I was thankful for that as I was really looking forward to this match.  The match on a whole was just stellar.  B-Boy took an early advantage, not bothering to chain wrestle with AmDrag but instead relying on strikes.  There seemed to be a comeback in the work when B-Boy tried for the Shining Wizard early in the match--but Dragon moved!  B-Boy landed awkwardly on his feet with no knee to push off, and Dragon swept B-Boy's legs from out under him, quickly snapping a leglock on the New Age Punisher!  B-Boy was quick to react, however, wiggling his way to the ropes and latching on to break the submission.  Eventually, Dragon would find himself on defense once again.

Later in the match, B-Boy put Dragon in the corner, chopping him and stomping down until Dragon sat against the turnbuckles.  Dragon seemed defenseless as B-Boy went to the opposite side of the ring, emerging from the corner with a full head of steam as he looked for the running bootscrape...

...and missed it!  Dragon was able to dive out of the way of B-Boy's dangerous boots, just in time to avoid the running facewash as B-Boy slid all the way to the outside, stumbling into the guardrails.  That was the turning point, as Dragon turned it up a notch and worked over the arms and neck of B-Boy for a few minutes.  A late comeback from B-Boy was too late, as Dragon had too much going in his favor, blocking an attempted move from B-Boy into the Cattle Mutilation!

The crowd cheered and many chanted for B-Boy to "TAP!  TAP!  TAP!"  However, the New Age Punisher did no such thing, although he seemed very much in pain while in the submission.  Finally, B-Boy passed out in the Cattle Mutilation, as referee La Pinocha noticed this and leapt to his feet, calling for the bell as Dragon broke the submission, getting a controversial win over B-Boy as the New Age Punisher did not actually submit to Dragon's Cattle Mutilation!  The fans will definitely be excited if there is a rematch in the future between these two men.

MAIN EVENT

Suddenly, Kid Rock's "Cowboy" started up, and the fans noticed who this music belonged to almost immediately, as they rose to their feet and turned towards the entranceway to see the Chosen One, Jeff Jarrett, emerging with guitar in hand!  The fans immediately started a round of boos for the first, former, and only WWAW Champion as he made his way down to the ring.  Jarrett looked very focused however, and the fans needed only to look back towards the entrance to see why.

Metallica's "Fuel" hit, and the crowd went nuts!  Jarrett had his guitar in the corner, watching the entrance carefully as none other than Scott Norton entered!  He seemed to have bulked up a bit since his last appearance in the WWAW, but as Jarrett's former ally turned mortal enemy, Norton was ready to kick some ass that he had waited for over a year to kick!

"Ladies and gentlemen, this next match is the main event, scheduled for one fall with a sixty minute time limit!  Your referee is WWAW Senior Official Johnny Wisdom."

"Introducing first, in the corner to my right, weighing in at three hundred and forty pounds...SCOTT...NORTON!"

"And his opponent, in the corner to my left.  He was the first WWAW World Heavyweight Champion...the Chosen One...JEFF...JAAAAAAAAAAAAARRETT!"

Match #8
Jeff Jarrett vs. Scott Norton

Well, the match didn't light the world on the fire, but the crowd was hot enough to justify these two men being in the main event.  Since they had dedicated almost four months in WWAW to being at the top of the card, one more card wasn't going to make that much of an effect on them.

They worked methodically, however, and on videotape it didn't quite work as well as it might have if someone had been in person watching this match.

About the match, however, Norton used his power early in the match, tossing Jarrett around like a rag doll to the delight of the crowd.  Jarrett resorted to cheating tactics to get what he wanted, however, turning the tide with a low blow and other similar moves, keeping Norton on the ground so that he couldn't power his way to a victory over Jarrett.  When Norton managed to fight back against Jarrett, it only took one more low blow--which was actually seen by the ref, but since he assumed that this was only the first low blow he only issued a warning to Jarrett--to turn the tables back in Jarrett's favor, and with Norton crouched over, Jarrett slapped on the Stroke, hitting it and turning Norton over for the
