[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/29/04

Snabbit888Posted on 03/29/04 at 10:17:06

The GCW was a false start due to some computer problems. This one should last longer, my stupid machine's performance bearing. So, please read, comment, tell me what you think.

* * * * *

We are live in Chicago, Illinois for our debut edition of Global Championship Wrestling's Modnay Night Explosion! Some of the best wrestlers in he world have been signed by GCW President Ryan Niemiller, and they were on showcase tonight. GCW is going to show the world that they have what it takes to compete with anybody. Our title tournaments began tonight, with first round matches in the North American and Crusierweight Title Tournaments, as well as the semi-final matchups in the World Tag Team Title Tournament. Before we could get to any of those matches, we got to hear from one of the individuals who should prove to take GCW straight to the top!

* * * * *
[After the opening to Explosion completes, the first sound we hear is that of the music of Kurt Angle. The crowd immediately begins chanting "YOU SUCK!" in time with the music. Angle's pyro goes off as he marches down to the ring. He snatches the microphone away from GCW ring announcer William Buck. Angle gives Buck a little shove as he begins to speak.]

KA: Why don't you get your fat self out of here? I have something to say!

[The crowd boos as Angle's cheap heat tactic worked... slightly]

KA: Now before this show goes on any further, let me tell all of you exactly who I am! My credentials, if you will. I am Kurt Angle. You might know the name. I won a freakin' gold medal! You know, a gold medal? In the Olympic Games! I am a world-class athlete. Hell, I'd say I'm the greatest athlete in the world today! It's true, it's true! I excelled in the amateurs, and I've excelled in the pros. I wasn't the first overall pick in the draft for nothing! I have done it all in this business. I've been a multiple-time World Heavyweight champion. Using the three I's, intensity, integrity, and intelligence, I have established myself as the best in the world today. But you know, that's not enough for me, it's true, it's true. I work hard at what I do, and I will not be content until I am the best this business has ever seen! And I don't care how many of the no-talent, non-Olympic gold medal-winning, pieces of trash I have to go through, Global Championship Wrestling is my turf. And tonight, Kurt Angle stakes his claim, it's true, oh it's damn true!

[The crowd is growing a little restless having had to listen to Angle stroke his ego for the last couple minutes.]

KA: What I want is for anybody, absolutely anybody in the locker room right now to accept my open challenge. I will fight anybody in a one-on-one match, right here tonight. It can be anyone at: big, small, fast, slow, ugly... I don't care! I will make you tap! It's true, it's true!

[Angle's music starts up again to a big mixed reaction. Angle will wrestle somebody tonight, but who will accept the open challenge?]

Match #1
Cruiserweight Title Tournament - First Round
Shark Boy vs. Low-Ki (w/ Daffney)
****************************
There was a lot of pressure on both Shark Boy and Low-Ki, seeing how they were the first match in Global Championship Wrestling history. Shark Boy and Low-Ki came through with a solid match. The crowd took an immediate liking to the eccentric Shark Boy. Now that I think about it, how can you not like a guy who wears a mask with a dorsal fin? Well, Low-Ki apparently wasn't a big fan of Shark Boy, as he devasted him throughout this match, hitting him with more hard kicks than I can shake a stick at. Shark Boy tried to fight back, but Low-Ki was just too overwhelming for him, finishing him off with the Ki Krusher, and cementing his spot in the semi-finals, much tot he delight of the borderline crazy Daffney.

[Cruiserweight Title Tournament - First Round]:
Low-Ki pinned Shark Boy with the Ki Crusher in 0:05:42.
Rating: ** 3/4

Low-Ki made an X with his arms as Daffney cackled loudly. Low-Ki is going to be a force in the Cruiserweight division, and with his alliance with Christopher Daniels and Elix Skipper, they're be a group to be dealt with.

Match #2
World Tag Team Title Tournament - Semi-Finals
The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Triple X (w/ Low-Ki & Daffney)
*****************************************************
Speaking of Triple X, "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels & "Primetime" Elix Skipper were in action trying to earn themselves a place into the match for the right to be the first World Tag team champions next week here on Explosion. But to do so, they were going to have to go through a well-polished and super talented team, Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin, the World's Greatest Tag Team. The tag division as of right now is not extensive, but these two teams showed that there is a lot of talent. There was nothing spectular about this match; just very solid tag wrestling. Low-Ki thoguht he was clever a few minutes in, nailing Shelton Benjamin on the outside with a stiff kick, but referee J.D. Sanders caught him in the act. Knowing the importance of this match, Sanders merely ejected Low-Ki from ringside rather than call for the disqualification. Low-Ki and Triple X protested, but eventually, he obliged. After several more minutes of quality action, Skipper went for a springboard moonsault on Charlie Haas, but Haas reversed it into a gutbuster. This gave him a big enough window of opportunity to lock on the Haas of Pain. Skipper tried to hold on, but the pain would be too great, causing him to pass out and giving the victory to the World's Greatest Tag Team.

[World Tag Team Title Tournament - Semi-Finals]:
The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated
Triple X (Christopher Daniels and Elix Skipper) when C. Haas defeated Skipper
when Skipper passed out in the Haas Of Pain in 0:11:39.
Rating: *** 1/4

We now know that Haas & Benjamin will be wrestling for the World Tag Team Titles next week. But who would they be facing? We would find out later in show when the Basham Brothers took on the team of Rob Conway & Nick Dinsmore.

Match #3
North American Title Tournament - First Round
John Cena vs. Sean O'Haire
**********************
Our first match of the North American Title Tournament featured the popular John Cena, sporting a Michael Jordan jersey, taking on Sean O'Haire, the powerful youngster with a ton of potential, but certainly not all there upstairs. O'Haire showed both his extreme strength and his loose cannon nature, hitting a variety of power moves, including a nice powerslam. Cena fought back with some basic thuganomics, I guess one could call it. Overall, this was quite the even contest. No clear advantage either way. It was just a matter of who would make the first mistake, and that man was O'Haire, as he went for the Prophecy before Cena was sufficiently wore down. Cena reversed and hit the F-U and picked up a hard fought victory and a trip tot he semi-finals of the North American Title Tournament.

[North American Title Tournament - First Round]:
John Cena pinned Sean O'Haire with the F-U in 0:12:28.
Rating: ***

After the match, Cena seemed a little out of it, as if he didn't expect to have this much trouble in the first round. Sean O'Haire might be a little off his rocker, but he can definitely hold his own in the ring. I expect big things out of this guy.

* * * * *
[We are backstage with Teddy Hart. He is getting ready for his match.]

TH: I know just by my name alone, I have a lot of expectations I'm supposed to live up to. I'm one of the famous Harts of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm supposed to pave the way into the new millenium, keep the Hart family name alive and kicking. That's exactly what I'm here to do. I know I'm not the conventional Hart prototype of wrestler. I have funny colored hair, I fly around the ring, and I don't know when to keep my mouth shut. But one thing is for sure, I am a Hart, and I'm going to work my way to the top like a Hart. And tonight, it starts with Rey Mysterio Jr. in the Cruiserweight Title Tournament. Mysterio, I have all the respect in the world for you; you're one of the best cruisers in the world. But you're not Teddy Hart. It's time to play.

[Hart leaves for the ring.]

Match #4
Cruiserweight Title Tournament - First Round
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Teddy Hart
*************************
Teddy Hart was certainly confident coming into this match. Hart has a boatload of talent, there's no denying that. But Rey Mysterio Jr. is a veteran, and is regarded by many to be the best cruiserweight in the world, and he always brings his A-game. Hart was not intimidated, as he took it right to Mysterio. These two brought the house down. Tons of high-flying and high-risk moves from both men, as they both understand the importance of this Cruiserweight Title Tournament. Teddy Hart's unorthodox style had Rey out of his game early on, as Mysterio had a hard time figuring out Hart. Hart took a big risk on a flying plancha to the floor, which Mysterio was able to reverse with a dropkick that caused Hart to thud hard on the concrete. Mysterio took the advantage after this as Hart struggled to recover from his hard fall to the floor. Mysterio seemed to be getting a bit frustrated, as he couldn't put the youngster away. Mysterio eventually got Hart set up for the 619, but Hart moved out of the way and was able to catch Mysterio with a facebuster. Hart jumped to the top and went for the Open Hart Surgery, but Mysteriorecovering and took him down from the top with a flying headscissors. Mysterio sensed his window of opportunity, quickly hitting the West Coast Pop and getting the 3 count in a hard fought match that could have went either way.

[Cruiserweight Title Tournament - First Round]:
Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Teddy Hart with the West Coast Pop in 0:09:38.
Rating: ****

After the match, Mysterio and Hart shared a handshake which got a good pop from the crowd. Hart may not have picked up the victory, but he definitely earned the respect of Rey Mysterio Jr. tonight, who moves on to the semi-finals of the Cruiserweight Title Tournament.

[We are backstage where we can see Kurt Angle standing outsie of his locker room door. On the door is a sheet of paper that says "OPEN CONTRACT" on it. Angle is waiting impatiently becaue as of yet, no one has answered his challenge. A backstage crew person walks by, but he is stopped by Angle.]

KA: Hey, buddy! You want to answer my open challenge?

[The crew person doesn't quite know what to do with this. There is a short pause.]

KA: WELL?! Do you? C'mon! It'll be fun!

CP: Mr. Angle, I just bring people coffee and make copies and...

KA: Are you scared?

CP: Well, yeah... I'm like 120 pounds... I've never been in a fight in my entire life!

KA: I knew it! Everyone around here is yellow. Get the hell out of my face, skippy. You sicken me!

[Angle slaps the crew person in the back of the head as he retreats down the hallway. Angle watches the crew person go. When he turns back around, "The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam is standing nose-to-nose with him.]

KA: What the hell do you want?!

RVD: Whoa, man... let's just chill out a bit. You're getting a little too excited. Just calm down, dude.

KA: "Man?!" "Dude?!" Show me a little respect! I'm an Olympic gold medallist for pete's sake!

RVD: You might be a gold medallist, but one thing you're not is [points to himself] ROB... VAN... DAM! You want a match tonight, Kurt? Hey, no worries. You got one fromt he Whole F'n Show.

KA: You want to fight me, punk? Son, you're making a mistake. I will snap your freakin' ankle!

RVD: Maybe so, but hey, I'm not worried. And you want to know why? Because I'm ROB... VAN... DAM!

[RVD has a pen in his hand. He starts to sign his name to the contract, but Angle grabs his head and slams it into the door, causing RVD to fall to the ground. Angle starts putting the boots to Van Dam before the GCW Official Brigade runs down and breaks it up.]

Match #5
World Tag Team Title Tournament - Semi-Finals
Rob Conway/Nick Dinsmore vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
*****************************************************
Before this match started, the World's Greatest Tag Team was shown backstage watching this match on a monitor, as they will take on the winners next week on Explosion to crown the frist World Tag Team champions. This other semi-final match featured four men who all know each other very well with Rob Conway & Nick Dinsmore taking on Doug & Danny, the Basham Brothers, who had their strange dominatrix manager Shaniqua with them. This wasn't a bad match, but it almost seemed as if both teams were a little nervous. They obviously know each other very well, but things didn't quite click for these guys like I know they have in the past. After a pretty unspectacular match, Dinsmore ended up getting the pin on Danny Basham after of all things, an airplane spin.

[World Tag Team Title Tournament - Semi-Finals]:
Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore defeated
The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when N. Dinsmore made
Danny Basham submit to an airplane spin in 0:05:27.
Rating: ** 3/4

This was certainly an odd contest, but never the less, Nick Dinsmore & Rob Conway will meet the World's Greatest Tag Team next week, the winners being crowned the first World Tag Team champions. After the match, Shaniqua was not at all pleased with her men, whipping them both. This is an odd threesome for sure.

Match #6
"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. Justin Credible
********************************************
The crowd was extremely excited for the Global Championship Wrestling debut of a true legend in this sport, "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, as he took on Justin Credible, who is no slouch himself. This was a great technical matchup, as even though he's getting up in years, HBK still has what it takes to get the job done. Credible was not at all intimidated by the legend of HBK, as he took it right to him, working over that infamous injured back. Credible thought he had Michaels where he wanted him, going for the That's Incredible, his spinning Tombstone piledriver. However, HBK spun out of it, fired Credible's chest up with some chops and then hit his patented flying forearm. This surprised Credible just enough for HBK to pick up the win.

Shawn Michaels pinned Justin Credible after a flying forearm in 0:11:54.
Rating: *** 3/4

The crowd popped huge as HBK's music hit, but those cheers would turn to boos quickly as Kut Angle sprinted out from the back. Angle snuck up behind Michaels and dropped him with the Angle Slam! And just as quickly as Angle had rushed down there, he was gone. It took a bit, but when Shawn Michaels got back to his feet, he was none too happy. Why did Angle attack Michaels? Michaels didn't seem to care, as he stormed to the back in search of Mr. Angle.

* * * * *
[We are backstage where Mario Riviera catches up with Angle who is heading back to his locker room.]

MR: Kurt Angle! Kurt Angle! Why did you just attack Shawn Michaels?

KA: Why did I attack Shawn Michaels? I don't have to explain myself to you! Now get out of my face, sparky!

[Angle starts to walk again, but he is got behind by Shawn Michaels who lunges at him and begins punching away. After a few moments of grappling, the GCW Official Brigade separates the two men. This is going to get uglier before it gets prettier, it appears.]

Match #7
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho
*****************************************
Global Championship Wrestling has signed some of the top-tier wrestlers, and this match was a perfect example of that as "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero took on "Y2J" Chris Jericho. These two have met many times over the years in different promotions, so they know each other in the ring very well. Guerrero got a huge reaction from the Windy City fans, as over the past couple of years, he has developed quite the fan following around the world. Jericho seemed thrown off by this at first, as Guerrero outwrestled him in the early minutes. Jericho fired back though once he gained his bearings. Guerrero & Jericho put on a fantastic fast-paced technically sound match that the crowd was really into. Both men really pulled out all the stops, knowing that a victory over a competitor of this caliber would be huge early on in GCW's existance. By the end of this one, both men's chests were blood red from all of the chops they delivered. It came down to just one mistake, and that mistake came from Eddie Guerrero, who when attempting the Frog Splash, caught Jericho's knees to the gut instead. Jericho quickly followed up by hitting the Lionsault. Jericho locked the Walls of Jericho on next, but Eddie Guerrero was not going to submit easily. Guerrero was able to crawl to the ropes, but Jericho had the presence of mind to pull Guerrero back out to the center of the ring. Guerrero wasn't done yet though, as he made it to the ropes one more time, but yet again, Jericho pulled him back to the center. Guerrerot ried to fight out of it one more time, but by then, he was all but spent. He had no choice but to tap out.

Chris Jericho made Eddie Guerrero submit to the Walls Of Jericho in 0:14:00.
Rating: ****

Jericho seemed quite content with himself after the match, going as far as slapping Guerrero on the back of the head in a major show of disrespect. Sure, Jericho won in impressive fashion, but that is still uncalled for. When Guerrero came to, he didn't look all that thrilled. I feel we're going to see these two lock horns again in the future.

Match #8
North American Title Tournament
Booker T vs. Hardcore Holly
***********************
Earlier in the night, John Cena advanced to the semi-finals of the North American Title Tournament. In this match, we'd have our second man advance in the form of either Booker T or Hardcore Holly. This was a very competitive match that probably went on a little longer than it should have. Both men hit their signature spots, and this is the best that I've seen Hardcore Holly look in a long time. He was very sharp and crisp in the ring. At about the midway point, Holly got a huge pop from the crowd by hitting his dropkick, possibly the best in the business. However, that cheer quickly became a jeer when he flipped off the crowd. Booker T fought back though, even catching Hardcore with the Book End, but he only managed to get a 2 and a half. Booker seemed to be rolling, even hitting a big axe kick on Holly. Booker then put Hardcore in a standing headscissors, but out of the blue, Holly reversed it and dropped Booker hard with the Alabama Slam. Three seconds later, Hardcore Holly was in the semi-finals.

[North American Title Tournament - First Round]:
Hardcore Holly pinned Booker T with the Alabama Slam in 0:13:25.
Rating: ***

An impressive victory for the man from Mobile, Alabama. Booker T was heavily favored in this match, but Hardcore squeaked out a win. He moves on step closer to the North American Title, but he'll have to go through some stiff competition. At this point, some matches for next week's Explosion were shown. They are as follows:

In the final two first round matches in the North American Title Tournament, Matt Hardy takes on Lance Storm and Perry Saturn locks horns with Tommy Dreamer. In Cruiserweight Title Tournament first round action, AJ Styles meets The Amazing Red, and Shannon Moore takes on Chavo Guerrero Jr. We also know that our first Wold Tag Team champions will be crowned when Rob Conway & Nick Dinsmore take on the World's Greatest Tag Team, Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin. But now it was time for our final contest of the evening!

Match #9
MAIN EVENT
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. Kurt Angle
*****************************************
Kurt Angle started this evening off by issuing an open challenge. Rob Van Dam answered that challenge backstage, but Angle took that opportunity to assault him. The assault was broken up pretty quickly, but RVD still had to be a little rattled by it. He didn't seem too shaken up early on, using his educated feet to put Angle off early, taking him out of his game. Angle took a breather outside of the ring to compose himself. When Angle got back in the ring, he got RVD down with a single-leg, and proceeded to go to work. RVD's offense relies a lot on his legs, so Angle wisely worked on his left one, keeping him grounded. Angle expertly worked over RVD's leg for a couple of minutes, but for some reason, he got a little cocky and decided to mimic some of RVD's offense by heading to the top rope. Angle jumped off with a moonsault, but RVD got out of the way just in the knick of time. RVD got his second wind and blocked out the pain from his leg as he went to work on Angle with a series of kicks, including a big stepover one that caught Angle hard in the jaw. RVD followed with the Rolling Thunder, but only managed to get a 2 count. RVD then hit a standing moonsault, but Angle managed to positioned himself out of the way and lock on a guillotine choke. RVD fought to get out, but the Olympic gold medallist is a master of mat holds, and it didn't take long until the Whole F'n Show was out.

Kurt Angle made Rob Van Dam submit to a guillotine choke in 0:06:01.
Rating: ***

Angle wasn't done however, as he refused to release the hold. Angle was obviously trying to prove a point, but this was just sickening. Finally, Shawn Michaels ran down to the ring to a huge pop and hit Angle with a flurry of punches. He whipped Angle into the ropes and brought him down ahrd with the Sweet Chin Music, to the mass approval of Chicago, Illinois. HBK's moment of revenge was cut short though, as Chris Jericho came out of nowhere and blasted Michael's right between the eyes with a chair! The show came to an end with Jericho holding the chair above a fallen Shawn Michaels. The question remains though, why did Jericho attack Michaels? We hope to find that out next week!

I know it's not considered good board etiquette to bring up an old thread to the front, but I have always enjoyed your circuits, so screw it.

Angle has kind of become your new Lyger. He's in every one of your feds.

Nice little old-school heel interview for Angle. Puts him over as he should be.

Daffney with Lo-Ki? Interesting. Never really pictured them together. I was pretty definite that Shark Boy didn't stand much of a chance.

I was a little surprised of the quality of tag team you had in there at the second round. That looked more like a finals match to me. Oh, and I can see Daffney with Daniels so that's a good pairing. Nice match, and glad to see the WGTT come out on top. You might want to think about changing their name, though? Maybe getting back with Angle?

Interesting to see Cena in one of your circuits. Looking forward to seeing you write an interview for him. I imagine he'll go far in your fed.

Crap. I was hoping for a Teddy Hart victory. The members of the DVDVR will not be happy with you. Anyways, he gave a good interview, and it looks like he will be a force later.

RVD vs. Angle should be good. Nice cocky segment from RVD.

Conway and Dinsmore going to the finals? Blah. Don't like that. You should have had it be WGTT vs. Daniels and Skipper. Would have been slightly more interesting. I'm just not feeling Dinsmore and Conway unless it leads to the WGTT turning heel with Angle's help.

HBK? Whoa! That's a first for you. I hope you give Credible something good to do. He's the kind of guy that you love to hate.

So I'm guessing Jericho is the heel against Guerrero. Another interesting selection of wrestlers for you. We need Gran Hamada to come in here and kick somebodies ass!

Hardcore Holly over Booker T? Gotta question the logic there, but you have always been rather unique with your selection of wrestlers.

Angle going over RVD, clean? I LOVE IT! I love it when a heel goes over clean. Sad to see Michaels getting the run-in though. I absolutely hate Michaels.

Good card. You know, I think that if you didn't post a circuit name or your own name I could still point out your cards. Your writing has hardly changed since the beginning circuit of GLW.

I'm going to go read the rest, may not reply until the most recent card, however.

Maybe you should check with Copp about getting your own forum?
