Incredibly long cards

ggazooPosted on 02/14/03 at 00:55:17

I was just wondering how many of you out there actually take the time to read an ENTIRE card, much less write one. Some cards out there are so detailed, it's crazy. Granted, it could be a good read if it's well written, and a good fed to start  with, but does anyone think that writing a novel per show it worth it in the end?

Look at Oliver's circuit. It's still one of the best out there, and he's never gone to the trouble of writing a show word for word. I for one don't have the time either, what with so many lifestyle changes since TNM came out (but I still find the time to play!)

I'm not looking for flames, I was just curious to see if cards that are more "Bare-boned" can still attract the audience of those are all totally written out.

Opinions?

They can.  Actually, probably the best middle ground is short writeups.  Match + maybe short comments on the match itself + summarized segments & interviews & such.

However, there are some feds that are really good when written really indepth while other feds just aren't as interesting in depth.

I personally think its relative to your style (can you write interesting long cards?), how well you can write your wrestlers (can you write Raven's interviews to sound like something Raven would say?), and how well the wrestlers are known (for WWE circuits, most of the wrestlers are already known by your readers; for fantasy wrestlers, the more detailed writing helps make up the gap of guys nobody knows about).

The reason Oliver's circuit works is the booking.  His cards make sense and people who deserve a push get one.

Also, his summary's give you just enough detail to get a picture in your mind of what's going on...but not too much.

I think it really depends, sometimes when doing a card it is hard to make it small and still hit all the points you want to get out. Some people do small cards and make it work fine, others go big and it works for them. So it really is a case by case thing.

Another reason is it's in the HTML format that tnm creates - people who just submit long write-ups fall into the trap of forcing people to scroll through particularly long bits. That's alright if the write-up is GOOD, but if it's not, most people probably end up fooling themselves into thinking their skimming through the card when really, they're not reading at all.

The HTML format you get with Oliver's means you can choose which interviews/match finishes to read. If one turns out to be especially dull, (hypothetically of course :p ), you aren't obliged to keep reading it until you get to the bit of the card you're interested in.

Ideally, if I were to ever stick my circuit on the net, I'd want to keep it in the HTML format because my interviews are, how shall we say, not all that great. Bar a few peoples characters which I've nailed, a lot end up looking generic and samey. Consequently, the few people I do get right end up getting a big push, which would make sense I presume.
