6/3/89 - TV Taping - Saturday Morning Wrestling #5

The show kicks off with the classic NWA on WTBS opening.

The announcers Gordon Solie and David Crockett welcome us to this week's edition of the program.  Gordon Solie then tells us that last Monday Ric Flair did the unthinkable, he walked into Amarillo, Texas and beat Terry Funk in his own home town.  Gordon personally sends get well wishes out to Mil Mascaras, who was injured in a match earlier this week.  Gordon then sends us to the ring, which is obviously in a television studio that seats about 100 maximum, with Paul Roma and Jim Powers already in the ring awaiting their opponents The Midnight Express here this Saturday morning.

Gordon Solie:  The Midnight Express take the win over this young upstart team to kick off this edition of the NWA on Saturday Morning.  Let's take a look at the replay.

David Crockett:  Here you see Sweet Stan hitting his savate kick followed with a dance for the fans.  And here is the Alabama Jam from the top rope as Beautiful Bobby almost hits his head in the lights here for the win.  The Midnight Express are the winners.  James E. come on over.  As always we know you won't be at a loss for words.

James E. Cornette:  You see these two young punks that we just whooped up on this morning, David?  Well, I can tell you that we'll take on anyone, anywhere, anytime.  In fact, we'll take on those two goofs again, just because we can and we'll beat them every time.

David:  Cornette, I know that there is a team out there looking to gain revenge in the form of the Road Warriors against your team.  Will you take them up on the offer when Hawk returns?

Cornette:  When?  Hahaha.  You're a real funny guy Crockett.  Hawk's not coming back.  We sent him to the hospital and now Animal had to go and team with that other face paint wearing puke Sting.  Must be a side effect from wearing that stuff.  Sure you're not wearing any David?

David:  There you have it fans, Cornette and The Midnight Express open to any one's challenge.

Cornette (off screen):  "Get well, Hawk, hahaha"

David shaking his head after being interrupted:  We'll be back after this time out (as they fade to black... you can hear Crockett say "get them outta here").

JJ:  Mr. Crockett, I'll put it short and to the point.  I've put Lex in matches in which we know we can win.  He's got Dusty Rhodes tonight in Asheville and he's going to be defending the US Title everywhere you see the Total Package this week.

Crockett:  Lex, I know you've had some battles with The American Dream in the past, and you've kept him away from the title so far.  What is the secret to your success?

Luger:  David, isn't it obvious?  I have the perfect physique and the perfect training regimen thanks to Mr. Dillon.  There's no one that can take this United States Title from me.  (Lex flexes his pecs)  No one.  (does a double arm bicep pose and totally blocks Crockett from the camera)

Crockett:  Thanks, Champ.  We'll be right back.

David:  Terry Taylor, you said you'd be right over, and boy was that quick.

Taylor:  I told ya so David.  I'm feeling real good about what's going on around here.  I've been teaming with Gary Hart and the Great Muta.  And I can tell you that we've been beating Sting and Road Warrior Animal all over the country.  In fact, we're set to face them again tonight in Asheville.  And Asheville, be ready to see two grown men in Halloween paint, cry tonight in the middle of the ring as me and Muta beat them beyond recognition.

David:  That's pretty big talk from you this morning.  You do realize that they are in the building.

Taylor:  What?  (goes from being cocky to starting to panic) No one told me they were here.  Where are they?  You can't do this to me David.  I'm outta here.

David:  Apparently, Taylor may have to answer to Animal and Sting tonight in Asheville.  We'll be right back.

[Terry Funk interfered against Ric Flair.]

And Terry Funk has jumped Ric Flair, thusly giving Flair the win!  Rick Steiner is up and he's not too happy.  Steinerline on Funk!  And Steinerline on Flair!  And the ring is cleared as the fans around the ring bark at him.

Gordon:  Ric Flair retains the NWA World Heavyweight Title this morning, thanks to Terry Funk's interference.  Funk came out to the ring early on to scout Flair, as these two had a classic battle in Amarillo last Monday night and will meet up again this Friday in Charlotte.  Let's go to David Crockett who is standing by with our NWA World Television Champion, Sting.

David:  Thank you Gordon.  At this time, I'd like to introduce to the world, the man that currently holds the National Wrestling Alliance World Television Championship, The Man Called Sting!  Champ, thanks for being here this week.  Next week, you have a title defense against Arn Anderson right here on the SuperStation.

Sting:  That was one great match we just saw wasn't it?  Wow.  My buddy, Rick Steiner almost beat the Champ.  (Sting barks like Steiner)  Arn Anderson, they call you the Enforcer.  Well, I've got this title right here.  And you've got one half of the NWA World Tag Team Titles.  I've got myself a partner to watch my back in Road Warrior Animal, so don't think you can just bring Tully Blanchard down here next week to interfere, because it just won't work.

David:  Sting, you and Animal have formed quite a tag team in the last few weeks.  This team came together after the heinous attack from the Midnight Express on Road Warrior Hawk.  And you've filled in, meshing well to do battle with Great Muta and Terry Taylor in some great tag team battles.

Sting:  Yes, we have David.  And I'd like to wish Hawk a speedy recovery with his knee injury.  Get well buddy!  We'll see ya soon!  (Sting howls out to the fans)

Crockett:  Sting and The Enforcer for the TV Title next week here on TV and don't miss Ric Flair vs Terry Funk this Friday in Charlotte!  Thanks for joining us.  We'll see you at the arenas until next week.

Card rating: ** 1/2

Sting versus Arn Anderson . . . Why do I smell a swerve coming up?
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/16/06 at 01:22:49

Swerve?  I would never pull a swerve on the Saturday show, unless it were furthering a storyline which a swerve at this point wouldn't.  The whole point of Saturday Morning TV is to setup the payoff matches that happen at the arenas, at the Clashes and at the PPVs.

I've got myself a partner to watch my back in Road Warrior Animal, so don't think you can just bring Tully Blanchard down here next week to interfere, because it just won't work.
This line foretells the whole outcome of next week's match, especially for those that may have actually seen some of the old TBS stuff.
UnrightPosted on 02/16/06 at 04:13:33

What's with Dusty Rhodes coming down to ringside during the Young Stallions vs Midnigth Express match? No mention of it by the announcers... Did he just get lost looking for the buffet?

And I'm suspecting Sting's partner may, in fact, not have his back in an unexpected never-in-a-million-years SWERVE~!
AnubisPosted on 02/16/06 at 21:25:56

ThUnright said it, that's exactly what I was thinking.  I was thinking he'd probably turn on Sting or something.

Dusty Rhodes lost on the way to the buffet?  Naw, lol. ;D

I wasn't aware of the booking format with regards to how you book the house shows and television shows and such.  I take it that's how things went back in those days?  I'm not too familiar with the old territory days, honestly.

Still, the first thing I thought was a swerve when I saw that match.  As it stands, given what you said (assuming you're not trying to throw me off), it will likely end in a no-contest of some sort (double DQ perhaps).

Don't mind me, I love making predictions. ;) Just not that great at it sometimes.  (Only five for nine predicting Against All Odds recently.)

Of course there was no mention of it.  But it was plain as day that Dusty was there.  It's kinda hard to miss him.  Plus you have to remember for TV's sake, he's faced Paul Roma twice now on TV in 5 weeks time.

And I'm suspecting Sting's partner may, in fact, not have his back in an unexpected never-in-a-million-years SWERVE~!
Wait and see the fracas when it happens.

Nope... no turn from Animal next week.  Although the main event is scheduled to have quite an eventful ending.

See above ... TNM has a sick sense of humor.

For the most part, yes.  It was the "dying days" of the territories that you are seeing portayed here.  And actually to more accurately reflect it, I should be doing an additional two cards... one more on Saturday, one more on Sunday, but I felt that it would be further overkill to this circuit.

Still, the first thing I thought was a swerve when I saw that match.  As it stands, given what you said (assuming you're not trying to throw me off), it will likely end in a no-contest of some sort (double DQ perhaps).
Actually it will end with a DQ, but it will be the typical... "we're out of time" ending.

Don't mind me, I love making predictions.  Just not that great at it sometimes.  (Only five for nine predicting Against All Odds recently.)
I love the predictions.  It's quite entertaining to watch readers try to guess what you've already got planned out almost a month in advance as is the case with this circuit.

In fact, I already know that during July house shows, there will be 31 NWA World Title defenses against 31 opponents in 31 days for the Great American Bash Tour '89!  The tour will start in the famed Omni in Atlanta and weave it's way around the US until it ends at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York.  This should make for an enteraining set of house show results, even if we all know how the tours usually go.
fettPosted on 02/17/06 at 21:17:52

Ahh, I fondly remember GAB 86.  At least I think I do... ;)

If memory serves, they ran stadium shows around the country, ours here in Philly was at the old Veterans Stadium, and featured a main event of Ric Flair defending against Road Warrior Hawk.

AND I think they also held, in my opinion, the best and original best of seven series...

Magnum T.A. versus Nikita Koloff for the United States Championship, and all seven matches were Russian Chain matches.

I further remember Flair making the world believe that Ricky Morton could beat him.

Here's hoping you GAB will be just as memorable, Rick!

Huh.. I always considered it a big deal of sorts when someone makes a presence during a match. A kind of "Why's he here? What's going to happen?" moment. When there was no mention of what he did after coming down to ringside, it just makes me think he wandered down, stood around for a bit picking his nose, then wandered off.
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/18/06 at 01:47:00

I'm hoping it is too Fett and your analysis of 86 sounds about right. Koloff vs Magnum was the mega-feud of the day. :) The whole idea really intrigues me from a TNM stand point and will help me to better develop the roster in the "any one of my guys can hang with the champ at any given time" sort of ways if everything goes as booked.

Sometimes things like this are better left acknowledged in the present until they are acknowledged in the future thusly clarifying the whole situation of the past. (my own quote on certain booking theories, nice one, eh?)

In booking character for this one: Looks like the "dirt sheet" writers are having a field day with why Dusty Rhodes was a ring side recently for a televised match between the Midnight Express and Paul Roma and Jim Powers. Some claim he's en route to the buffet, others claim to have seen him pick his nose and leave. Those in the know, that haven't been contacted by the aforementioned "dirt sheets", can tell you that something is in the works with Rhodes and Roma, seeing how Rhodes has now beaten Roma twice on television.[/character off]

So basically what I'm getting it at is that in the upcoming weeks, it will be explained.  I'm not one to just skip over such a factoid, especially when I go out of my way to make sure it makes the write-up to a match and involves a future TV angle.
UnrightPosted on 02/18/06 at 05:56:43

Ahhhhh... I see. Sometimes the Sledgehammer of Stublety is necessary in helping me understand some things.
fettPosted on 02/18/06 at 16:03:13

RE; Dusty and Roma...

That's kinda how it was done back in the day.

Wrestller A would make an appearance during a match, then like three months later, he would interfere.

Then David and Tony would say, "Hey remember three months ago, when..."

Most unlike today's booking two matches ahead, back then the book was laid out months in advance.
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/18/06 at 20:29:56

you got it Fett.  That's exactly what I am aiming for here.  I'm not big on doing a three act play in a one hour program of wrestling.  A nice and slow build leads to a much more fun payoff for the most part.  And I am actually booked about a month ahead at this point, so yes I am doing booking in advance, right down to title changes and everything.
AnubisPosted on 02/19/06 at 08:59:16

Just curious, but do you think modern wrestling fans would enjoy going back to the old school methods of booking?  Would it even be possible given the increase of exposure?

If so, I may try (key word there) to "bring back the old school" in my dynasty at some point.
Snabbit888Posted on 02/19/06 at 09:11:54

We don't have the attention spans for it anymore.
AnubisPosted on 02/19/06 at 09:55:34

Okay, better question.  While the average modern wrestling fan doesn't have the attention span for it anymore, how about you TNM regulars?

Rick GarrardPosted on 02/19/06 at 15:36:28

Seeing how episodic television is enjoying some pretty high ratings with both Desparate Housewives and now the even more highly rated Grey's Anatomy on ABC Sunday nights, I'd say that as long as you have logical storylines it could be pulled off. The problem with most wrestling writers today... yes they are NOT bookers... they are Hollywood writers within the business of "sports entertainment", to paraphrase a recent Jim Cornette rant which I agree with, is that they saw the boom period of the WCW when all conflicts had to be settled in the same week they started within a 3 hour time frame, and rarely varied from the storyline even if the crowd was telling them otherwise. Case in point the Master P Posse vs The West Texas Rednexx.... the Posse was supposed to be the face and Hennig's Rednexx were supposed to be heel but it totally backfired so instead of doing the smart thing and reversing the roles, they killed the whole storyline.

And WWE is starting to get back to the long term storyline in a few cases.... HHH vs Big Show, HHH's quest to regain the RAW Title, HHH vs Batista, HBK vs Vince, Orton vs Rey Jr., Orton vs Taker, Angle vs Taker, and Flair vs HHH, RVD vs Carlito and a handful of other payoff matches that have yet to happen. And for the most part, these are the angles that get the best reactions in the arenas because of the slow builds. It's rather funny how when you hot shot storylines the fans feel they can then miss a week of TV without missing anything big, but when you do the slow angle build, people get compelled to tune in every week and see what's going to happen next. The nWo's arrival at WCW is a good example of a slow build storyline.  (Edit note:  I do have to point out the downturn in WCW's solid run is when they took the book away from Kevin Sullivan and started letting Hogan control most of what went on, even though he wasn't the bookerman)

Okay then, I think starting with the 2006 year, I may take this idea over to mine and not only try to make ROH more like its real-life counterpart (for however much longer I'm there), but also try to bring back that old-school style for building up feuds (which I would also take with me to a self-made promotion if I break off from ROH).

Wait, Samantha Fox had a 900 number?   :o

Not only did she have one (to go with her US music career) so did "The Fresh Prince" Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. And now Smith is a mega-movie star.

Just goes to show that y'all read the cards, when you see something that is THAT minute of a detail.

Does The Rick still update this circuit???
Rick GarrardPosted on 09/08/07 at 07:49:33

when I have the time to... yes... it takes me about 2 hours per card, because of the work that I put into it.

I was just wondering, The Rick.  I read the whole thing yesterday and was wondering if it was still in operation.  Turns out that it is, and that's very good to hear.

How do you handle the contracts?  It seems that the contracts would be up for renewal very quickly given the number of cards if you used the traditional 52 card format.
Rick GarrardPosted on 09/09/07 at 06:35:32

I used tweak circuit to set contracts 8 cards = 1 contract card/week.  So that contracts that are for 52 weeks are legit for 52 weeks.
