5/27/89 - TV Taping - Saturday Morning Wrestling #4

The show kicks off with the classic NWA on WTBS opening.

The announcers Gordon Solie and David Crockett welcome us to this week's edition of the program.  Gordon Solie then tells us that the Horsemen rode strong last Saturday night in Hollywood, Florida, as Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard captured the NWA World Tag Team Titles and Ric Flair recaptured the NWA World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship from Ricky Steamboat to set up our program opening six man tag team match this week.  Gordon sends us to the ring, which is obviously in a television studio that seats about 100 maximum, with The Horsemen already in the ring awaiting their opponents The Steiners and Ricky Steamboat here this Saturday morning.

Gordon Solie:  The Dragon Ricky Steamboat gains a pinfall on our NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair to take the win this morning for his team on this edition of the NWA on Saturday Morning.  Let's take a look at the replay.

David Crockett:  Here you see Terry Funk distracting Ric Flair.  And here is the German suplex from Ricky Steamboat on Flair for the win.  The Horsemen are still irate in the ring, as JJ Dillon is trying to calm them down. Let's get a word with our winners.  Steiners, Dragon come on over.  Scott welcome to Saturday mornings here on the SuperStation.

Scott Steiner:  JJ you better get all those belts you guys have and get ready to lose them to the three of us.  We're gonna take all of them when we get our hands on you again.

Rick Steiner:  {barks and the small TV crowd replies with barks}  Horsemen like my brother Scotty said, we're gonna hit you hard and take away that gold.

David:  Dragon, what you did this morning is something you've wanted for a long time.  How does it feel to get a win over the champ with the help of Terry Funk, a man that Flair is slated to face this week in Amarillo?

Steamboat:  David, it was just like winning the NWA World Title all over again, but with a little help.  Flair, you see I've had a taste of being the champion, and I liked it.  Now I want it again.  And I know you've got to face other opponents for the next few weeks, but someday Flair, we WILL meet again.

David:  There you have it fans, Steamboat wants the World Title back but will Flair still be the champ by the time he gets his shot at the gold?  We'll be back after this time out.

Dusty:  David Crockett, I'm the American Dream.  I went to Florida and whooped up on that evil ol' Kevin Sullivan.  And now I'm back here in good ol' Atlanta.  (cheap pop from the TV crowd who then break into a "let's go Dusty" chant)  This week, we go to my home state of Texas, in
public if you will.  And I get to face the man with the perfect body, Lex Luger for his United States Title, daddy.  Well let me tell you while you have the million dollar body, I look just like each and every common man and woman that goes out and works hard for their money.  And Luger, I know you might think I'll be a big pushover, just because of the way I look, but ask around, The American Dream is not dead and you will not beat me this week no matter how good you look.

Crockett:  Dusty... Luger... (Dusty interjects that Willie Nelson will even be there) in Texas this week.  We'll be right back.

David:  Animal that was an impressive win, but why aren't you two tagging this week?

Animal:  That's none of your business.  Let's talk about the Midnight Express instead.  {and out comes Eaton, Lane and Cornette to confront the Road Warriors.}

Cornette and Ellering are nose to nose and Lane slaps Animal, while Eaton clips Hawk in his right knee.  Hawk lets out a scream and is writhing on the floor clutching his knee, as Eaton stomps away on Hawk's right knee toppling the interview podium onto the right leg of the fallen Road Warrior.  Animal and Ellering run off the Midnight Express as it would appear Cornette's men have done what they intended to do to the Road Warriors.

(Sting retained the NWA World Television Title.)
[Animal interfered against Terry Taylor.]
[Great Muta interfered against Sting.]

And Animal attacks Terry Taylor just as Taylor is about to execute a double team manuever with Muta outside the ring.  Animal ran off the opposition and has just saved Sting!

Gordon:  Sting retains the NWA World Television Title here this morning.  Great Muta interjected himself into this match early on.  Apparently, Paul Ellering went to the hospital with Road Warrior Hawk as Road Warrior Animal made the save for Sting to help battle off Muta
and Taylor.  Let's go to David Crockett who is standing by with a very special guest.

David:  Thank you Gordon.  At this time, I'd like to introduce to the world, the man who is once again the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion, The Nature Boy Ric Flair.  Champ, you used that mandatory rematch clause on Ricky Steamboat and have reclaimed the title.

Flair:  I saw the Dragon out here last Saturday morning, talking about it was going to be my last chance to get my title back.  Well, maybe it was, but I have it now Dragon.  And you may have pinned me this morning right here in that ring, but ya know what punk?  Ya ain't gettin' a rematch anytime soon.

David:  We saw earlier this morning in your six-man tag match that a newcomer to the WTBS studios has arrived, but he is no stranger to that title (Crockett points to the NWA World Title belt that is sitting on the interview podium) that you now hold.

Flair:  David, don't make me mad again this morning.  (Funk comes out to the interview set)  What do YOU want?

Funk:  Flair, you banana-nosed, pompous ninny.  I came out here to challenge you for THAT title.  But it's obvious that you are afraid of me and my family.  I've been issuing challenges for years for you to come and face me in Amarillo.  Heck, I have even offered to face you in Charlotte or Atlanta.  But I've never got an answer.  So this morning I am here for an answer.

Flair:  Whoooo..... NO!

Funk:  No?!

Flair:  That's what I said, cowboy, N-O.  NO!  Whooo!

Funk:  Okay, if that's the way you want it.  (Funk turns as if to leave)

Flair:  You see David, I'm the champ and I can hand pick my opponents if I *Smack* (Funk hits Flair over the head with his branding iron)

Funk slams Flair head first into the title belt and then into the interview podium as Crockett's notes go flying and the belt crashes to the ground.  Funk leads Flair to the ring and begins to punch Flair repeatedly.  The Horsemen are out to help Flair which brings the Steiners and Steamboat out to help Funk.  And fans we are out of time!  Thanks for joining us.  We'll see you at the arenas until next week.

Ah, a knee injury... I had thought it was a neck injury, so I quite pictured a decapitation with tennis racket type of thingy. No matter my error, and this works quite well for a visual.

Well done over all, two distinct type of recaps, as the daily reports remind me of the 'ol Apter mag recaps; while the Saturday morning TBS show is just like watching the tube (even the commercials!)

Keep up the good work as always Rick!

OT: god I loved the Apter Mags! ;)

Armstrong has the neck injury at the hands of Tommy Rich no less (the man in real life that ended referee Tommy Young's in-ring career with a neck injury).   Hawk has the blown out PCL in his right knee.

Well done over all, two distinct type of recaps, as the daily reports remind me of the 'ol Apter mag recaps; while the Saturday morning TBS show is just like watching the tube (even the commercials!)
:)  This is exactly what I was intending.  And I am glad that it comes across as such, right down to the Apter mags reference (cause that's where I blatently borrow the arena reports title from after revisiting some of the older copies that I have... even Joey Styles is listed as a contributor in one of them).

Keep up the good work as always Rick!
Thanks, I will.  And I think everyone will be happy to note that beginning July 1 and running through July 28, we will be a running the "Great American Bash" tour, this year starting in Charlotte, North Carolina and ending in Los Angeles, California.  And on each night of the tour, the NWA World Heavyweight Championship will be defended against a different opponent by the champion at the time.

Having said that, this upcoming week worth of house shows will feature "tryout matches" with the following in some form:  Kevin Von Erich, "Maniac" Mark Lewin, Dr. Death Steve Williams, and Mando Guerrero as the NWA makes a swing through Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Join us this Saturday morning (6/3) for Squared Circle Wrestling sanctioned by the NWA.

On the card...

-- Terry Taylor in singles action

-- NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger defends his title

-- The Midnight Express in tag team action

-- A special interview with NWA World Television Champion Sting

-- The NWA World Heavyweight Title will be defended for the first time ever on Saturday Morning television!

-- All this and more this Saturday morning on the SuperStation... WTBS!

I was just getting to the edge of my seat, when you ran out of time.  Guess I wait for next week.  I enjoy reading your cards.

You promised Black Bart in Texas, sir.

BTW, any chance that Flair might defend the title against the "local guy" when you travel the country?  For instance, he fights Kevin Von Erich in Reunion Arena or Mando in San Antonio or something.
Some of Flair's best work was going from town to town and making the fans believe that Butch Reed or Lance Von Erich or Austin Idol would actually win the belt.

Card subject to change.  ;)
And gosh darn it, those in the arenas will see him.  He's going to interfere in a match or two.  Who said this is the ONLY trip to Texas?

BTW, any chance that Flair might defend the title against the "local guy" when you travel the country?  For instance, he fights Kevin Von Erich in Reunion Arena or Mando in San Antonio or something.
or Terry Funk in Amarillo?  ;)  In fact, a print dirt sheet is reporting that the rundown of the upcoming week's cards are Funk vs Flair across the board for the NWA World Title.  I will neither confirm nor deny this at this time.

Some of Flair's best work was going from town to town and making the fans believe that Butch Reed or Lance Von Erich or Austin Idol would actually win the belt.
Exactly.  And hopefully I can get to that point, where my main roster can support itself and Flair vs local guy caps off a great night of mat action.  (plus that is what the Great American Bash Tour ... coming July... is all about... 31 title defenses in 31 days against a different opponent each day!)

Okay, let's revisit the end of this week's TV:

Funk:  Okay, if that's the way you want it.  (Funk turns as if to leave)

Flair:  You see David, I'm the champ and I can hand pick my opponents if I *Smack* (Funk hits Flair over the head with his branding iron)

You actually think Funk wouldn't get a title shot after attacking Flair, especially with the upcoming tour of Texas?  ;)

Run down of the lineup for the 5/27/89 Dallas house show:
Kevin Von Erich vs Maniac Mark Lewin
Tommy Rich vs Tracy Smothers
Paul Roma and Jim Powers vs the Midnight Express
NWA US Title:  Lex Luger vs Dusty Rhodes
Sting and Road Warrior Animal vs Great Muta and Terry Taylor
Ricky Steamboat vs Mil Mascaras
NWA World Tag Team Titles: Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard vs The Steiner Brothers
NWA World Heavyweight Title: Ric Flair vs Terry Funk
And as always... card subject to change.

(Is that enough LOCAL talent on the card for ya? ;)  )

I have to say i am really likeing the whole old school concept, keep up the good work Rick.
AnubisPosted on 02/07/06 at 22:30:26

Wow, commercials.  Didn't ever think I'd see that like this!  This is almost like watching the old NWA, or so I assume (given that I didn't know about the NWA back when it was big).

I do have a question though.  Maybe I missed something or whatever, but who is the fourth Horsemen right now?  I see at least three real-life Horsemen there (Paul Roma, Sting, and Lex Luger), but I'm not sure who your fourth is at the moment.  I'm assuming Luger given the time frame and everything, but i'm not certain.

Oh, and when is Kevin Nash getting his tryout?  You are close to his home state once you get through Texas and New Mexico, after all. ;) Wouldn't it be funny if he got a knee injury in his first match?  LOL.
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/08/06 at 01:47:41

Thanks Magister.

And now to answer Anubis:

Wow, commercials. Didn't ever think I'd see that like this! This is almost like watching the old NWA, or so I assume (given that I didn't know about the NWA back when it was big).
If you note match times and consider each interview to run roughly two minutes, the time for the entire show not including ads is just about always 43 minutes right in line with a normal hour long TV show. I'm trying to keep it as realistic as possible. And think the ads help with that.

In my best Ed McMahon voice... You are correct, sir! Lex Luger it the "associate" who is the fourth member of the group although I don't believe I've ever acknowledged them as the Horsemen anywhere on TV other than in the match results. So that would mean there should be an Arn Anderson speech in the upcoming weeks that should better explain it.

Oh, and when is Kevin Nash getting his tryout? You are close to his home state once you get through Texas and New Mexico, after all. Wouldn't it be funny if he got a knee injury in his first match? LOL.
Nash... er Vinnie Vegas...er Oz... er Master Blaster Steel should be getting a tryout some time in 1990 perhaps along with the Diamond Studd?!?
Rick GarrardPosted on 02/08/06 at 01:51:42

On a side note, I think I've found out why the match ratings have been so oddball.  Apparently when you take the TNM6.2 allwrestler file and import it into TNM7, you have to "fix" a bunch of stuff (like only Luger having a charisma value and no styles set for anyone).  Thusly starting with this week's house shows, everything should be better.
AnubisPosted on 02/08/06 at 05:21:41

Wow, that's pretty neat!  I hadn't actually added up the times, so I hadn't realized that!  Very nifty!

You're doin g great there.  I love the attention to the minor details like that and making it seem more realistic.  Keep it up!
