Gordon Solie: The Total Package Lex Luger, accompanied by James J. Dillon, takes the win here this morning to kick things off on this edition of the NWA on Saturday Morning. Let's take a look at the replay.

David Crockett: Here you see Luger nailing Armstrong with the flying forearm which sets him up for this devastating hold. The Package lifts Armstrong into the Human Torture Rack and it's all over from there. Let's get a word with our winner. JJ Dillon bring Lex Luger on in. Lex welcome to Saturday mornings here on the SuperStation.

Luger: When I was down in Florida being trained by the great Hiro Matsuda, I used to watch you every Saturday morning. And you know why? (Crockett with a puzzled look on his face) Because I wanted to be the best in this business. I have reached that point. I am your United States Heavyweight Champion. I have the Mr. Dillon as my manager. And most importantly I am right here on WTBS.

David: Some are speculating that last night may have been the last chance for Dusty Rhodes. Lex, have we seen the last US Title defense against the American Dream?

Luger: David, I hate Rhodes, the fans hate Rhodes (Luger gets booed by the 200 or so fans in the TV studio), everyone hates him. So yes, you have seen the last of The American Dream's chase for this title. (Luger has the belt around his waist and does a pose for the camera before he and JJ leave the set)

David: Luger says no more title matches for Rhodes. We'll be back after this time out.

Outstanding height. Sting finishes him off with the Scorpion Death Drop. Your winner Sting. Sting come on over. Sting you did what some would say was the impossible last night in the Omni, you became the World Television Title. Champ, how does it feel?

Sting: (yelling) How does it feel David? How does it feel? (Sting walks over the fans by the ring as the camera follows) (Sting out of microphone reach) This is how it feels. (back in the reach of the microphone) The little Stingers all believed in me, and now I've got this. (holds up the Television Title Belt) Gary Hart you can keep on bringing in guys, and I'll keep on knocking them down. You see I'm the Stinger and where I come from, guys like you used to be the neighborhood bully. That was until I got there, and sent them all on their way. Howl!

Crockett: Sting has sent his message to Gary Hart to keep setting them up and he'll keep sending them away. At this time, we are going to show you fans some of what went down last night here in Atlanta at the Omni."

Didn't I tell ya he'd be the champ someday? Well he is and he was, until last night when that punk Stink took it all away. That's okay Stink, we'll be coming for that belt you hold so dear, so don't hold it too tight. Now that having been said, Mr. Flair has offered Mr. Muta a couple of matches this upcoming week, sort of as a warmup for facing Stink. And on Mr. Muta's behalf, I have accepted those matches. Flair may the better man win. (Muta does the thumb across the throat motion as he and Hart leave)

Gordon: The Steiner Brothers are the #1 contenders, but they had a little help from their friends the Road Warriors here this morning. You can rest assured that this isn't the last we have heard of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, as they have one last chance at the NWA World Tag Team Titles tonight in Hollywood, Florida. Let's go to David Crockett who is standing by with a very special guest.

David: Thank you Gordon. At this time, I'd like to introduce to the world, the NEW National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion, The Dragon Ricky Steamboat. Champ, tonight it's you and the Nature Boy in Hollywood, thanks to Flair's use of the mandatory rematch clause.

Dragon: Last week Flair, you came out here and told everyone that last Saturday night was going to be our last match and that you were going to put me out of this sport that I so love forever. Well, guess what Ric? I have that brass ring as I so put last week. And it's mine for now. Tonight it's you and I one more time. 60 minutes of two of the best athletes in this company as we compete one more time for this 10 pounds of gold.

David: We all heard earlier that Flair has agreed to some matches with Gary Hart's Great Muta. What, if any effect, will this have with your match tonight?

Dragon: David, I've known Gary Hart a LONG time. He's like a cockroach, in that everytime you think you've rid yourself of him, he keeps showing back up. So I've got to watch my back tonight as well as watching Flair in the ring. And if I do that, and do it well, I will walk out with this NWA World Championship Title belt just like I walked in.

David: Thanks, Champ. There you have it fans. The Dragon defends the NWA World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship against The Nature Boy tonight in Hollywood.

Gordon (rejoining Crockett at interview area): Thanks for joining us. We'll see you at the arenas until next week.

AnubisPosted on 01/28/06 at 23:12:39

That was interesting.  Makes me wish I was aware of NWA back in 1989.  Unfortunately, having lived in Illinois until 1989 and then Alouisiana until I moved back in 1992, I was pretty sheltered from the stuff happening out east; WWF was all I knew about back then.  I remember renting the old War Games featuring the Horsemen, and it was sweet.  You are getting the feel like I was getting when I watched some of that ols stuff down perfect.

Just one question though: why are your ratings so terrible?  That was back when Luger and Steiner were actually somewhat good in the ring, and thsoe matches seemed like they would be ** or *** is I were to see them in reality back then.  The low ratings befuddle me.  Do you have their work rates down really low or something?  When I was using TNM, I noticed a nasty trend of getting bad ratings if the people involved even have below 80 in work rate (sometimes even just below 90); charisma also had an effect.  Just wondering about that, since I think the ratings should be coming in higher.
Rick GarrardPosted on 01/28/06 at 23:37:03

I just as befuddled as you.  I have most of the top guys with workrate of 80 or higher... and the ratings keep tanking, so I've decided starting after this last TV program to start a "heat adjustment" program which will be enacted with an adjustment of +1 heat point for a TV match and +1 heat point for a TV interview (and other heat bonuses as I see fit) which should help get a couple more stars out of a few guys.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Champions of the NWA for the week ending 5/19/89:

World Heavyweight Champion:  Ricky Steamboat
World Tag Team Champions:  The Road Warriors
United States Heavyweight Champion:  Lex Luger

And here's this week's Top Ten:
1.  World Heavyweight Champion: Ricky Steamboat
2.  United States Heavyweight Champion: Lex Luger
3.  Ric Flair
4.  The Great Muta
5.  World Television Champion: Sting
6.  Dusty Rhodes
7.  Brad Armstrong
8.  Terry Taylor
9.  Jerry Lawler
10.  Tracey Smothers

Rick -

On the subject of heat adjustments, what has happened in the early cards of your circuit is exactly why I adjust the heat ratings before I even begin a "continuation" circuit.

When you started your circuit, Flair was the World Champion and clearly the top heel, so I would have put him at a heat rating of 8 or 9 from the get go, and then put Steamboat at 6 or 7.   Starting out that way makes the early matches more exciting, and the challenge becomes keeping them over as opposed to getting them over.
AnubisPosted on 01/29/06 at 07:12:55

I never understood how the heat thing worked, but I never ever had a problem with low match ratings as long as work rate didn't dip below around 80-90 and charisma was at least 70.  I still don't think I understand.  Maybe your TNM is truly loopy?  It did go against your booking . . . Maybe it was kidnapped by aliens?

From the talk Rick and I had earlier, the main reason the heat seems to be dropping is that with the style of circuit he is doing, it's almost the exact same match lineup for several cards in a row.  TNM is designed to be a 1 card = 1 month sim, so TNM is seeing it as 7 months straight of seeing the exact same show more or less.  Thus, the TNM crowds get bored with it and don't care anymore.
