These two couldn't keep it in the ring after Stevie Ray almost picked up a quick win again here this week.

Oh no!  Out on the floor... Kabuki has just spewed red mist in the face of Stevie Ray!  He's is in need of medical attention!  We saw what the green mist did Jimmy Valiant last week.  And this is the first time we've seen the red mist from Kabuki.  Perhaps Gary Hart can explain this to us sometime in the future.

Tonight on card, Paul Jones teams for the first time with Jimmy Valiant to take on Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard.  It appears that Ricky Morton's knee injury is worse that first thought, so Robert Gibson will take on Wahoo McDaniel and Manny Fernandez in a handicap match.  Billy Jack Haynes and Nikita Koloff join forces to do battle with Krusher Khrushchev and Ivan Koloff.  Loverboy Dennis steps in the ring with Ron Garvin.  Rick Steamboat takes on Beautiful Bobby.  Terry Allen faces off with Dusty Rhodes.  And in the main event, Heavyweight Champion Steve Armstrong defends the title against Waylon Mercy.

Hehe, for an old-school fed, your title sure does get hot-shotted all over the place. :)  WAYLON MERCY WORLD CHAMP OH MY!
Rick GarrardPosted on 08/30/04 at 06:27:18

Yes it does.  But then again, that's what happens when it's unbooked... And the kicker is that it seems to be changing roughly once a month.  It's almost as if my TNM is possessed by Jerry Lawler's booking style.  I'd much rather have a lengthy, strong champion like La Parka turned into in BCW, but then again, I'll take what TNM gives me.

I'm worried for Armstrong's safety now that he's lost the title, and Gary Hart wants to confront him on the next card.
Some GuyPosted on 08/30/04 at 20:13:56

Who the heck is Waylon mercy. The name sounds familiar. Did he wrestle under another name.

He wrestled as Dan Spivey.
Rick GarrardPosted on 08/31/04 at 06:36:56

"Dangerous" Dan Spivey was one of the original members of the NWA Skyscrapers.  And he was also in the WWF as a tag team partner of Mike Rotundo as a fill-in member of the US Express after Barry Windham got injured.

Spivey's Waylon Mercy character in the WWF was short lived due to career ending knee problems that he had.  But it was a great character.  He'd come to the ring with face like tendencies, shake the fans hands, kiss babies at ringside, and shake the ref's hand.. but once the bell rang, he turned psycho.   And then when it rang at the end of the match, he'd return to his fun loving self.  Quite a good gimmick.  Not to mention his ring intro music that started with him stating "The lives of many wrestlers are gonna be in Waylon Mercy's hands" with a maniacal laugh.
Some GuyPosted on 08/31/04 at 21:31:55

when did he play the waylon mercy character
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/31/04 at 21:52:21

Early 1990s, if memory serves me correctly.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
Snabbit888Posted on 08/31/04 at 22:07:55

I believe it was 1995. He had one PPV match where he beat Savio Vega, I believe at an In Your House.

Upon closer research, yes, it was 1995.  Made his debut in June, and in his TV debut, he actually beat Jeff Hardy with the SLEEPER OF DOOM!
cerberosPosted on 09/01/04 at 01:43:41

He looked pretty cool with the Jimmy Buffett shirt, white pants and that awesome slicked black hair.  Plus he squashed that worm during his promo's.  Too bad Danny retired, could have been a decent midcard gimmick I think.
Snabbit888Posted on 09/01/04 at 01:48:29

Very cool gimmick, but by that time, his health had deteriorated a lot.  He was downright painful to watch in the ring.
