[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 8/7/06

Snabbit888Posted on 08/02/08 at 07:38:06

Charlotte, North Carolina was sold out as we brought you another episode of Monday Night Explosion! We are only 3 weeks away from our first pay-per-view spectacular from England, Summer Sizzler, and things in GCW were certainly heating up! On tonight's show, Christopher Daniels & CM Punk defend the World Tag Team Titles against Edge & Christian, Rey Mysterio Jr. defends the Intercontinental Title against Paul Burchill, we will hear from Chris Benoit regarding Shawn Michaels' shocking return a week ago, and in a huge main event, Kurt Angle goes one-on-one with the number-one-contender Abyss!

BROCK LESNAR CALLS OUT RANDY ORTON
The show started with World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar out in the ring with a microphone and his wrestling gear on. Lesnar didn't say a lot - only, "RANDY ORTON! GET OUT HERE... NOW!" After a few moments, Orton did appear, but via satellite on the GCW VideoTron. Orton said that he wouldn't be coming down to the ring as he was home in St. Louis recovering from a knee injury he suffered last week on Explosion. Orton told Lesnar that even though he has a bum knee, he wanted to assure him that he'd still be able to fulfill his duties as the referee for the World Title match against Abyss at Summer Sizzler. Orton also reminded Lesnar that even if he does win the match, the Legend Killer is also going to bring the Money in the Bank briefcase with him as well. We cut to commercial with Lesnar angry in the ring.

Match #1
Tommy Dreamer vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
The wrestling kicked off with Tommy Dreamer having the unenviable task of taking on the undefeated Samoan Bulldozer Umaga. Dreamer did the only thing he could do and come at Umaga with a barrage of offense right from the opening bell, but it was short lived as he couldn't get Umaga off his feet. Before long, as he has done week in and week out and dominate. Umaga changed it up a bit by tossing Dreamer to the floor, setting him up against the ringsteps, and ran full blast into Dreamer, knocking the Innovator of Violence's head into the steel, knocking him out cold.

Umaga defeated Tommy Dreamer by countout in 0:03:59.
Rating: ** 1/4

Armando Alejandro Estrada wasn't done yet as he instructed Umaga to do it again. Before Umaga could possibly end Dreamer's career though, KURT ANGLE ran in, jumped off the steps, and clotheslined Umaga hard to the floor! Angle unleashed several right hands on Umaga, but the Samoan Bulldozer was getting back to his feet. Angle cut that off by grabbing the ring bell and waffling the beast with it, opening up a small cut on his forehead. Umaga was slowed but still was going after Angle, but the GCW Official Brigade got in there to keep these two apart.

Match #2
Shelton Benjamin vs. Cassidy Riley (unsigned)
Shelton Benjamin was in action this week as he took on unsigned talent Cassidy Riley. These matches with outside talent can sometimes be very dangerous as these guys are trying to make a name for themselves and they have absolutely nothing to lose. Riley got in some good offense early and for a moment, it looked like he might stand a chance to pull off the big upset. But Benjamin regained his composure and control of the match before putting his opponent away with a T-Bone suplex.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Cassidy Riley after a T-Bone Suplex in 0:02:57.
Rating: ** ½

After the match, the Gold Standard took the mic and said he was getting tired of beating these scrubs week in and week out. He said that was going to come to an end because he would be making an impact very soon.

Match #3
Intercontinental Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. © vs. Paul Burchill
Tonight marked Rey Mysterio's first title defense since becoming the Intercontinental champion, defending against Paul Burchill. It's a sad fact, but because of Mysterio's small stature, many believe that his title reign is going to be short lived. Mysterio has done nothing but prove the doubters wrong in his career, and he was looking to continue that trend. Unfortunately, BOOKER T had other ideas as it didn't take him long to get involved in this match. Booker has the shot at the title at Summer Sizzler and he wants to ensure he gets his opportunity to win the gold, so he jumped in and attacked Mysterio, causing the disqualification.

Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Paul Burchill by disqualification in 0:02:38.
Rating: ***
(Rey Mysterio Jr. retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

Paul Burchill couldn't believe what he was seeing as Booker was peppering Mysterio with rights and lefts. After a few moments of this, Burchill had enough and attacked Booker, hitting him with the C4 and finishing him with the Curb Stomp. Burchill is obviously not pleased with Booker costing him his chance to become Intercontinental champion tonight.

EDGE IS AS BRAGADOCIOUS AS EVER
Before this next match, as he is known to do, "The Rated R Superstar" Edge was popping off at the mouth. Edge was still going on about how he ran Matt Hardy out of GCW, and that now, he and his brother Christian were going to add the World Tag Team Titles to the huge list of accomplishments that they are sure to muster in their time in Global Championship Wrestling.

Match #4
World Tag Team Title Match
Christopher Daniels/CM Punk © (w/ Daffney) vs. Edge/Christian (w/ Lita, Mickie James, Gail Kim, & Rhyno)
Edge & Christian have been riding high since "running" Matt Hardy out of GCW, and they were looking to add the World Tag Team Titles to their good days. They didn't even seem that upset that Rhyno was at ringside devouring a plate of ribs, (man, that guy loves ribs) but Christopher Daniels & CM Punk weren't just going to lay down and give the titles up. This was a good match for the titles and despite how ridiculous the antics of Must See TV are, you can't deny how good of a team they make. One thing they didn't expect though is that anyone was going to come at them over the Matt Hardy situation, but that happened when ROB VAN DAM ran out and attacked Edge, causing an immediate disqualification.

Must See TV (Christian and Edge) defeated Christopher Daniels and CM Punk when Edge defeated C. Daniels by disqualification in 0:10:18.
Rating: ***
(Christopher Daniels and CM Punk retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

We haven't seen RVD in weeks but he was back and he was pissed! RVD was all over Edge with right hands and kicks. Christian went after him, but received a spin kick to the face for his troubles. Rhyno didn't see what was going on as he was enjoying his ribs, but when Lita slapped him to pay attention, he jumped in the ring and clubbed RVD in the back with a forearm. The Manbeast stepped back and went for a Gore, but RVD moved out of the way and Rhyno nailed Christian instead! The Whole F'n Show threw Rhyno out of the ring and then went back for Edge, but the Rated R Superstar wisely got out of the ring. Rob Van Dam is back, and has set his sights on Edge.

MICK FOLEY MAKES SOME DECISIONS REGARDING SUMMER SIZZLER
We cut back to see Stevie Richards, again dressed like Mick Foley, and he had a drum. Yes, a drum. He started a drumroll before saying, "Ladies and gentleman... the commissioner of Global Championship Wrestling... MICK FOLEY!" Richards concluded with a shot to the cymbal and then it cut to Foley, who had a huge smile on his face. Foley had some business to attend to, the first being that in an executive decision, the match between Kurt Angle & Umaga at Summer Sizzler will now be a number-one-contender match, the winner earning a shot at the World Heavyweight Title in the future. At this point, Foley was interrupted by MNM - Nitro, Moore, & Melina. The smile quickly left Foley's face as Melina ran him down for being an idiot and that the commissioner shouldn't be smiling and being introduced via a drum solo from "the only man in this company who's more inadequate than you, Stevie Richards." Melina went on saying that what a commissioner should be doing is making sure justice is served, and that a man who deserves to be punished is Joey Matthews. Melina said that MNM feels unsafe with Matthews being allowed to run around freely and attack them whenever he sees fit. Foley tried to interject, but Melina bowled over him telling him he needs to do the right thing and let Nitro & Moore have one more crack at Christopher Daniels & CM Punk. Foley finally shut Melina up long enough to let her know that MNM will get an opportunity to handle both her problems as he has signed a six-man tag team match for Summer Sizzler pitting Daniels, Punk, & Matthews against MNM. When Melina asked who their partner was, Foley said she better go find one. "Because if you don't find a partner, guess who the third will be? You Melina." MNM protested this but as always, Foley's decision was FINAL.

Match #5
Monty Brown vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell & Elix Skipper)
This match was supposed to pit Monty Brown against Booker T, but when the Alpha Male was introduced, he didn't come out. The members of Blackout all looked around like they were confused, but when the camera cut to the back to show that PAUL BURCHILL had locked Brown in his locker room by putting a crowbar through the handle and moved a forklift in front of the door, Blackout had a huge smile on their face. They were all celebrating until MICK FOLEY showed up on the VideoTron and told Booker he'd have another opponent tonight... REY MYSTERIO JR.

Match #6
Non-Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. (Intercontinental champion) vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell & Elix Skipper)
Mysterio & Booker will of course meet at Summer Sizzler for the Intercontinental Title, but Mysterio was obviously not going to take what Booker T did to him earlier after his match with Paul Burchill lying down and he had his second match of the night. Mysterio came at Booker right out of the block, giving Booker no time to react. Burchill himself came out during this match, and we weren't exactly sure what his intentions were as he was not pleased with Booker costing him the Intercontinental Title earlier in the night. When Burchill went over to Sharmell and she handed him a big handful of cash, we realized that money will smooth over any problem. Burchill headed for the back with his bounty, but didn't expect to be greeted at the top of the ramp by MONTY BROWN who had gotten out of his locker room and was pissed! Brown pounded on Burchill, fighting him all the way backstage. Meanwhile in the ring, Booker got some fleeting offense in, but he was not at all prepared for Mysterio and it showed as the IC champion got a big win with the West Coast Pop.

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Booker T with the West Coast Pop in 0:05:45.
Rating: ***

Mysterio picked up a huge momentum building win over Booker, but he won't have the element of surprise over Booker at Summer Sizzler when the Intercontinental Title is on the line.

CHRIS BENOIT WANTS HBK AT SUMMER SIZZLER
Before our main event, we cut to back where "The Crippler" Chris Benoit was standing by, rubbing his jaw as he's still obviously feeling the ill effects of Shawn Michaels nailing him with the Sweet Chin Music. Benoit kept it short and simple, saying that HBK had no business showing his face around here as he's not welcome in GCW anymore. "You're old news, Shawn." He went on to say that if Michaels insists on getting into his business, he should have the guts to do so in a wrestling match, not some cheap shot during an interview. Benoit concluded by challenging HBK to a match at Summer Sizzler. As of press time, we don't have an answer from HBK's camp, but we are hoping to get some word next week on Explosion.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Kurt Angle vs. Abyss (w/ Paul Heyman)
This was a main event I was personally looking forward to as the former 2-time World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle took on the man who could possibly be the next World Heavyweight champion Abyss. I don't think we'll ever know how Paul Heyman got into Abyss' head and thus now controls him, but we do know that Heyman and Abyss make a lethal combination. Abyss has always been a scary individual, but with Heyman calling the shots, the Monster has been more vicious than ever. This might not be the best match for Angle to take this close to Summer Sizzler when he will face Umaga with a future title shot up for grabs, but Angle is not one to back down from a challenge.

Angle tried to wrestle Abyss and had moderate success, keeping the Monster off his feet. But once Abyss got the advantage, he dominated this match. Heyman knew that Angle isn't one to lie down, so he used that to make sure that Abyss inflicted even more punishment. Angle had brief moments where he'd mount a comeback, but every time Abyss would cut him off with a high impact move. Angle suffered a lot of damage at the hands of Abyss, but he made one more comeback attempt when Abyss charged into the corner but Angle moved. Angle quickly hit the Angle Slam but was only able to muster a 2 count. Angle showed great strength by hitting a trifecta of German suplexes on the number-one-contender and then went to the top rope for a moonsault. Paul Heyman jumped up on the apron and tried to grab Angle's foot, but the Olympic gold medalist kicked him away. It was enough of a distraction though as Abyss was back on his feet and power bombed Angle off the top. The Black Hole Slam was next, and the 3 count finished it off.

Abyss pinned Kurt Angle with the Black Hole Slam in 0:12:01.
Rating: *** 1/4

To make matters worse for Angle, UMAGA and ARMANDO ALEJANDRO ESTRADA were out and had bad intentions. The Samoan Bulldozer immediately floored Angle with a clothesline. Heyman & Estrada instructed their charges to dismantle Angle but BROCK LESNAR came out with a chair and planted one right between Umaga's eyes. Abyss tried to clothesline Lesnar, but the World champion ducked and clocked Abyss with the chair as well, knocking him from the ring. The show went off the air with Lesnar begging Abyss to get back in the ring.

We already know that next week on Explosion, live from Greenville, South Carolina, our main event will be Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle teaming up to take on Abyss & Umaga... in a Streetfight! You will not want to miss this as we move closer to Summer Sizzler!

Wow, Angle's on the worst run of his career. Still, Abyss comes off as a strong contender for this one. And even though Angle got the better of him tonight and even though Umaga won the first one, I can't see Angle winning at the Super Summer Sizzler Spectactular.

Speaking of the world title scene, Lesnar and Orton... nicely teased but I don't think Orton will be cashing in just yet. He's still not at his best.

Possible fatal-fourway in the works for the IC title perhaps, with Monty Brown and Paul Burchill being added to the mix, especially considering Burchill got it on with all of the other three guys tonight. Actually since you've already had Rey/Booker tonight, I could see you changing the upcoming SSSS IC title match into a fourway.

Hmmm, MNM need someone good. Not sure who in GCW isn't doing anything that can easily fit into this one, but I'm sure you'll think of someone for us. Punk and Daniels didn't have the best of outing tonight, which is a pity, but RVD being back is always good. And Rhyno concentrating on his ribs is even better.

I guess Michaels really is back then. You've teased it enough times over the course of several months, I've no idea how he's going to do against Benoit as I'm not sure if it's a permanent deal or not.

Stevie Richards rules. The other day I watched the Baron von Stevie skit from his ECW days... best segment of the entire show.

And Benjamin looks good... actually he might make a good partner for MNM seeing as he needs something to do right now. Whatever he's about to do, when he's done it I'm assuming he'll slip into the IC title hunt since he's the most natural challenger right now.

Orton/Lesnar continues to build. I think it will be teased, but Orton won't cash in at the Pay Per View.

Here lies Tommy Dreamer. Bulldozered by the bulldozer that is Umaga. Kurt Angle makes the save, but the damage was done to Dreamer. Umaga gets his bell rung with the...bell, but that only serves to slow him. I look forward to upcoming Angle slaughter.

Shelton wins. Yay, Shelton.

Burchill and Rey was shaping up to be a fun little bout until Booker ran in and attacked Rey. Burchill is not too pleased and rightfully so, he was screwed out of the title.

I thought Edge and Christian had a fifty fifty shot of winning, but Rob Van Dam makes their chances to win the title go up in smoke. Rhino attempts to save, Christian gets the brunt out, but Edge slips out, like the slippery slime he is.

Stevie Richards+drum=money. MNM and partner vs Matthews, Punk, Daniels, should be a fun match.

Burchill railroads Monty and we have Rey and Booker tonight. The usual awesome matche follows, and Booker is pinned! Wow, that really doesn't bode well for his title hopes, does it?

Benoit has another Superkick coming in his future.

Abyss wins. Right man won, as Abyss is the number one contender and a good main event as well. Umaga destroys Angle, Lesnar saves and hot damn, the street fight next week should rock.

Another awesome round of GCW. Onto the next!
