[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 7/31/06

Snabbit888Posted on 07/24/08 at 02:55:29

July is coming to a close in a big way as Monday Night Explosion came to us live from Raleigh, North Carolina! On tonight's show we will see tag team action with Rey Mysterio Jr. teaming with Monty Brown to take on Booker T & Paul Burchill! Also Tommy Dreamer & Lance Cade meet MNM, Cryme Tyme takes on the Bulldogs, and we will have the contract signing for the World Heavyweight Title match at Summer Sizzler with champion Brock Lesnar & challenger Abyss!

Before our first match, we were introduced to the new color commentator who will be permanently working with Michael Cole, and it was none other than TAZZ! The Human Suplex Machine was given a great round of applause as he joined Cole at ringside.

Match #1
Tommy Dreamer/Lance Cade vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
Our first match of the evening was tag team action with the former World Tag Team champions, MNM, taking on the team of Tommy Dreamer & Lance Cade. Dreamer has brought Cade along nicely and they are certainly meshing as a team, giving MNM a run for their money. Melina was on patrol tonight, constantly looking around to make sure that Joey Mercury didn't make another appearance. MNM didn't want to have to work as hard as they did, but Dreamer & Cade had different ideas, bouncing their smaller opponents around the ring. Melina was becoming worried and whispered something into Johnny Nitro's ear. Dreamer was on a roll and was looking to put Shannon Moore away, but when Dreamer hit the ropes, Nitro caught him with a big kick to the back of the head. Dreamer was knocked loopy and stumbled forward into a Northern Lights suplex from Moore for the win.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Tommy Dreamer and Lance Cade when S. Moore pinned Dreamer after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:09:54.
Rating: **** 1/4

A good win for MNM who will certainly be wanting a return match for the World Tag Team Titles and this win keeps them up near the top. One thing it didn't do was help subside the anger of JOEY MERCURY, who for the third show in a row was out to attack MNM! Unfortunately for Mercury, Melina spotted him coming and warned MNM, so he was only able to get in a couple shots before Mercury had to retreat. We still don't know what his motive is, but the fact remains that Joey Mercury is definitely in the head of MNM.

Match #2
Cryme Tyme vs. The Bulldogs
More tag team action followed as The Bulldogs took on Cryme Tyme. JTG was still sporting the stolen X Title he lifted from Gregory Helms (for the second time). The Bulldogs didn't much care for the X Title situation, but instead were looking to get a win that they desperately need to cement themselves in the tag team division. Cryme Tyme has been impressive since their debut in GCW though, and tonight was no exception, picking up the win after JTG hit a Running Front Flip Neckbreaker on Kazarian.

Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG) defeated The Bulldogs (Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith) when JTG pinned Kazarian with the Running Front Flip Neckbreaker in 0:05:06.
Rating: *** ¾

It didn't take long after the bell for X champion GREGORY HELMS to come out, sans the X Title of course. Helms had a mic and demanded that JTG return his X Title immediately before there are severe consequences. JTG said he would gladly hand it over... if Helms would give him a title shot at Summer Sizzler. Helms started to protest this, but when the massive Shad Gaspard got in his face, Helms reconsidered and agreed to the match. As promised, JTG handed Helms back the X Title, and then Cryme Tyme nailed him with the G 9 for good measure.

Match #3
Stevie Richards vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin continued his impressive winning streak since going out on his own, this week against Mick Foley's right hand man, Stevie Richards. Since Stevie has gone under the wing of Mick Foley, his focus and intensity has increased. Unfortunately, his win-loss record hasn't improved as he suffered another defeat, falling to Benjamin's Paydirt.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Stevie Richards with the Paydirt in 0:03:33.
Rating: ** ¾

The Gold Standard continues to rack up win after win, so one has to wonder when the Gold Standard will go after some gold.

THE BROCK LESNAR/ABYSS CONTRACT SIGNING
After we returned from commercial, we had the contract signing for Summer Sizzler for the World Heavyweight Title match, pitting Brock Lesnar against number-one-contender Abyss. These contract signings always have the potential to explode into huge brawls, so Commissioner Foley brought extra security personnel down with him to help keep order. Paul Heyman signed first on behalf of his charge Abyss, then handing it over to Lesnar. Lesnar was so anxious to get the match signed that he didn't even read over the contract before signing his name. Heyman had a big smile on his face as he said, "BROCK! You should have taken the time to read the contract, because I had my lawyers had in a little fine print. You see, Brock, you will be defending against the Monster Abyss at Summer Sizzler. But what you neglected to see was that there will be a special guest referee for the match. And that referee is this man... RANDY ORTON." Orton came out carrying his Money in the Bank briefcase, and Lesnar was livid about being outsmarted. Orton was also wearing a referee's shirt and when he got in the ring, he assured both Brock Lesnar & Commissioner Foley that he would call the match right down the middle. Lesnar went to respond, but before he could, Orton cracked him in the face with the briefcase, knocking him to the canvas! Orton and Abyss put the boots to Lesnar, who was desperately trying to fight back but unable to get to his feet. Before it got too out of control, KURT ANGLE was in the ring firing away with right hands at Abyss before clotheslining him over the top to the floor! Angle went after Orton, but the Legend Killer wisely dove out of the ring. Right then and there, Mick Foley announced tonight's main event, a tag match pitting Lesnar & Angle against Orton & Abyss!

DANIELS & PUNK CONFRONT JOEY MERCURY
We cut back to a darkened locker room where Joey Mercury sits in a corner of the room, wearing a long trench coat and with his hair down over his face. The World Tag Team champions, Christopher Daniels & CM Punk, along with Daffney, enter the room to confront Mercury. They tell Mercury that they don't know what his beef with MNM is, but that he needs to stop getting involved in their matches. "We're the World Tag Team champions, and we want to prove we deserve to be champions, and you getting involved in our matches isn't going to cut it." Mercury stopped them, first telling them his name isn't Joey Mercury but Joey Matthews. "Mercury is the name that THEY gave me. It's not who I am or what I'm about." Matthews went on to say that the past few months of his life have been pure hell, and MNM are to blame for it. "And I'm sorry if my getting involved upsets you, but I could give a damn what you or anyone else thinks. They are going to pay for what they've done to me, so you can just deal with it. Unless you want to get in my way too." The situation was tense as Daniels & Punk looked like they were going to explode, but Daffney intervened and took them out of the room before anything else went down.

Match #4
Rey Mysterio Jr. (Intercontinental champion)/Monty Brown vs. Booker T/Paul Burchill (w/ Sharmell)
As this match began, Michael Cole & Tazz announced that a match between Monty Brown & Paul Burchill has been signed for Summer Sizzler, which will be taking place from Burchill's home country of England. That will certainly give him home field advantage on August 27th, but he had no advantage tonight as his ribs were taped up thanks to the Alpha Male power bombing him through a table a week ago. As a result, Booker had to wrestle most of this match, which didn't make him all that happy. But Burchill would prove instrumental in his team winning this match in short fashion. Mysterio & Brown were dominating most of the match when Sharmell tripped up Brown from the floor. Brown turned and grabbed her by the hair, but as he did, Burchill clocked the Alpha Male upside the head with Sharmell's purse, which would be later revealed to have a brick in it. Brown stumbled back into the Axe Kick from Booker T and this one was over just like that.

Booker T and Paul Burchill defeated Monty Brown and Rey Mysterio Jr. when Booker pinned M. Brown with the Axe Kick in 0:03:32.
Rating: ***

Mysterio went after Booker, but Booker was out of the ring in a flash. Booker & Burchill left to the back with their tainted victory in tow. Mysterio went to check on the woozy Brown, but Brown shoved him out of the way and stormed to the back in search of Burchill.

Match #5
Shark Boy vs. Rhyno (w/ Christian)
Shark Boy came out all ready to go for this match with Rhyno, but when Rhyno was introduced, he came out... carrying a plate of ribs! I don't know what is up with this guy and ribs, but he freaking loves them. Before he got to the ring, CHRISTIAN ran out and took the ribs away from Rhyno, which almost set the Manbeast off. Christian thought quickly on his toes though, telling Rhyno that if he won the match, he could have the ribs back. This seemed to motivate Rhyno who went hard after Shark Boy. Sharkie was able to get some shots in when Rhyno would be distracted by the smell of the ribs, but they would be short lived as Rhyno would hit the Gore to get the win and his plate of ribs back.

Rhyno pinned Shark Boy with the Gore in 0:05:40.
Rating: ****

Rhyno went right for the ribs and devoured them, not caring much about getting his face dirty. As he and Christian walked up the ramp, Captain Charisma tried to take one of the ribs, but the Manbeast literally growled at him. Very territorial is the Rhyno.

CHRIS BENOIT RECEIVES HIS SURPRISE
We came back from break with "The Crippler" Chris Benoit standing in the ring. He cut a promo talking about how no matter what this "surprise" from Mick Foley was, he didn't regret what he did to either Paul London or AJ Styles, and if either decide to ever come back to GCW, he'll gladly send them out again in an ambulance. Benoit then said he was standing in the ring, and whatever big surprise Foley had for him, go ahead and reveal it. After a moment or so of silence, it was broken by, "OH... OH... SHAWN!" which caused the crowd to blow the lid off the arena. The pop got even louder when SHAWN MICHAELS stepped out from the back. Benoit's bravado was severely hindered as the Heartbreak Kid stepped in the ring and grabbed a microphone. HBK waited for the crowd to die down before simply asking Benoit if he was proud of himself. Michaels commented on how proud of a competitor Benoit used to be, how he was a former World champion. HBK said Benoit has become a shell of himself, and that's he's pathetic. He went on to say that Paul London and he go way back and that HBK helped train London to be a wrestler. "What you did to Paul wasn't an in-ring accident or just something that happens - it was disgusting and pathetic." Benoit stopped HBK, telling him that he appreciated what he was trying to do and how he was standing up for his former pupil, but that he was unnecessary. "You're old news, Shawn. Everyone knows that you are too injured to do a damn thing to me. The only person that has a worse back than you is that cripple Paul London. So why don't you do yourself a big favor, turn around, and walk out of here before I do to you what I did to your little buddy?" HBK thought about it and started to leave the ring, before turning back and nailing the Crippler under the jaw with the Sweet Chin Music, knocking him out cold! The crowd exploded huge as HBK stood over Benoit and badmouthed him as we went to commercial.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. Abyss/Randy Orton (w/ Paul Heyman)
Brock Lesnar was going to have a chance to get his hands on both Abyss & Randy Orton, and even better for him he had his friend and former World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle with him. Even though it is Abyss who gets the next World Heavyweight Title shot, Lesnar was seemingly more interested in getting his hands on Orton. Orton used this to his advantage by staying out of the ring, further frustrating Lesnar. When Abyss got the better of Lesnar by hitting a big powerslam, Orton finally tagged in and climbed to the top. Abyss held Lesnar for Orton, who jumped off and hit a double axehandle. But when Orton landed, however, he did so awkwardly and his left knee buckled. Orton let out a terrible scream as he clutched his knee. Everyone looked a little confused as to what to do until Nick Patrick called for the bell as the medical staff came down to tend to Orton.

Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle and Abyss and Randy Orton battled to a no contest in 0:03:39.
Randy Orton injured his left knee. He will be out for approximately 2 months.
Rating: ***

While Orton was being helped to the back, Lesnar decided to get himself a piece of Abyss, engaging in a brutal brawl all around the ringside area. Lesnar & Abyss were tearing each other apart, hitting each other with whatever wasn't bolted down. They sent Cole & Tazz running for the hills as Abyss backdropped Lesnar onto the announce table. While this fight was happening, Angle didn't know what to do as he was watching from in the ring. While he as watching he didn't see UMAGA come into the ring to nail him with a hard shot to the back of the head. Angle tried to fire back, but Umaga is difficult enough to slow down when you see him coming, let alone when you are blindsided. Angle was dropped with a Samoan drop, nailed with the running butt bump in the corner, and finished off with the Samoan Spike. Meanwhile, Abyss caught Lesnar running at him and hit him with the Black Hole Slam on the floor! The show came to a close with officials finally pulling Abyss & Umaga away from Lesnar & Angle respectively.

And I'm up to date.

With Tazz joining Cole, it makes me query something I may have inadvertantly missed - the announcers before were Styles and Heyman. I know where Heyman went... what happened to Joey?

Big win for MNM, Joey Matthews gets involved again, I'll touch on this in a bit.

Ahhhh, I didn't stop to think that JTG might have fitted into the X-Division equation. I'd only pictured them in the tag title hunt. Fair play though, should be a decent match. I miss Helms in the WWE you know. He ought to be due back around now.

Oh Brock, when will you learn to actually read what you sign. If Heyman had been REALLY smart he'd have inserted a clause whereby Lesnar had to dress in a restricting mascots costume or something. The question is will Randy Orton cash in... I'm saying no for now.

If you're repackaging someone and have any doubts, stick a new jacket on them. It's working for Brian Kendrick, why shouldn't it work for Joey Matthews.

I guess Burchill and Brown really are going to feud. It seems a little one sided based on their current positions in the GCW landscape, but we'll see.

Wow, Rhyno's new gimmick of always having ribs is actually working quite nicely. Can Christian control the Manbeast? And will he ever find out who is supplying him with so much food?

I guess Shawn is back then. And Benoit is still a jerk. Should make for a decent clash when it all boils down to it.

Well I guess Orton is DEFINITELY not cashing in MitB this PPV with him being injured. What a bunch of wussies though, they could have improvised a quick finish. And Umaga is in the main event picture there... he'd make a good opponent for Lesnar at some point.

Feedback Time~!

Fun little opening encounter and Joey Mecury comes out again to reek his unholy revenge. Melina might have cut his revenge short, but Mercury sent his message well

Cryme Tyme win over Kazarian and Harry Smith. Kazarian gets pinned, always a fun time. Here comes Helms, JTG wants a title shot, well it's a different title match. Cryme Tyme lay out Helms. Money, Money, Yeah Yeah!

Stevie Richards always does his job and he does to Shelton tonight, who continues to roll on. And hopefully soon Shelton will go some gold, he's really racking up some wins.

Chaos in the contract signing and a great tag team match set up for the main event. Given that Orton's the referee it would be a perfect time for him to cash in on the championship.

Burchill and Booker against Monty Brown and Rey seemed a bit on the short side. Monty looks ready to murder Buchill and anyone else that gets in his way.

GORE BITCHES! That was the best squash match in the history of wrestling.

Michaels punks out Benoit. YES!

God damn, Orton got hurt. That sucks, as that main event looked to be getting hot and heavy.

Good show, Summer Sizzler looks to be a...sizzler.
