[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 7/17/06

Snabbit888Posted on 06/30/08 at 02:33:22

Welcome to the nation's capital, Washington D.C., and welcome to the final Monday Night Explosion before this Sunday's Chaos Reigns pay-per-view! Mick Foley has signed a big main event for tonight, an 8-man tag team match! It will be Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Monty Brown, & Rey Mysterio Jr. going up against John Bradshaw Layfield, Booker T, Randy Orton, & Umaga! Also tonight, Lance Cade will meet Elijah Burke, AJ Styles meets Edge, Abyss goes one-on-one with Chris Benoit, and a whole lot more!

JBL WANTS A COUPLE OF STIPULATIONS ADDED TO THE MAIN EVENT AT CHAOS REIGNS
The show kicked off with the #1-contender, John Bradshaw Layfield, coming down for an interview, that bullrope he has grown fond of in hand. JBL said he is at an all-time high in confidence, especially after he "kicked Kurt Angle's ass" last week. JBL said he wanted to up the stakes at Chaos Reigns. "Brock, I am so confident that I will be the World Heavyweight champion after this Sunday that if I don't win, I will leave Global Championship Wrestling!" The crowd cheered loudly at this prospect. JBL added, "But here's the catch. If you beat me, I'll leave forever, but it's going to be in my type of match - a Texas Bullrope Match!" This brought out BROCK LESNAR who said he would wrestle JBL in any kind of match, especially if it meant getting rid of him forever. So the match is set, and it will be Lesnar vs. JBL in a Texas Bullrope Match!

Match #1
Matt Hardy (w/ Maria) vs. Elix Skipper (w/ Sharmell)
Our opening match of the evening featured Matt Hardy taking on Elix Skipper. Prime Time has been primarily doing Booker T's dirty work, but a win over Matt Hardy would help propel him back into title contention. Hardy is dead set on getting his revenge on Edge and wasn't going to let Skipper or anyone else stand in his way. Skipper got in a lot of offense, but in the end he ate a whole lot of canvas via the Twist of Fate.

Matt Hardy pinned Elix Skipper with the Twist of Fate in 0:05:07.
Rating: *** ¾

Match #2
Stevie Richards vs. Paul Burchill
Mick Foley has taken Stevie Richards under his wing and put him in a match tonight to try to build his confidence. Problem is, Paul Burchill had no intentions of being a confidence builder as he more or less destroyed poor Stevie. Stevie would get in a brief flurry of offense and celebrate prematurely, mostly out of sheer excitement that he had the advantage. Burchill cut him off with a knee to the gut and then a big knee to the head that all but knocked Stevie out. Burchill finished it off with his vicious new finisher, the Curb Stomp.

Paul Burchill pinned Stevie Richards with the Curb Stomp in 0:02:28.
Rating: *** 1/4

Poor, poor Stevie. It looks like he still has some work to do. Burchill, meanwhile, continues to impress and improve, and one has to think it won't be long before he's competing for some championships.

THE HEEL FACTION FOR TONIGHT'S MAIN EVENT ARGUE OVER WHO WILL BE THE CAPTAIN
We cut back to a locker room where JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD, BOOKER T, & RANDY ORTON are all arguing over who should lead their team tonight. Booker T said it was clear it should be him as he will be the next Intercontinental champion. JBL cut him off and said big deal as he will be the World Heavyweight champion. Orton then threatened that if JBL's not careful, he might be cashing in Money in the Bank at Chaos Reigns. The bickering continued until UMAGA came in the room and started yelling like the savage he is, quieting the room. After the Samoan Bulldozer's spiel, he left, leaving the others dumbfounded. After a moment, the three looked at each other and said simultaneously, "He's captain."

Match #3
Lance Cade (w/ Tommy Dreamer) vs. Elijah Burke (w/ Kenny Dykstra)
We hadn't seen much of Elijah Burke so far, and unfortunately, after this match it's going to be awhile before we see him again. Burke came out very aggressively against Lance Cade, using his boxing background to knock Cade a little loopy. Cade is a blue chipper though and has one of the biggest upsides in GCW, especially if he sticks around with Tommy Dreamer. Late in the match, Burke was going for the Elijah Express, but when he started the run, it was obvious he stepped wrong and did something to his right leg. To Burke's credit, he continued to wrestle, surely on pure adrenaline, climbing to the top rope and hitting a flying cross body press (albeit a sloppy one). He did hook the tights though and got a flash pin, but he was obviously in a ton of pain.

Elijah Burke pinned Lance Cade after a flying cross body press in 0:05:28.
Elijah Burke tore his right quadriceps muscle. He will be out for approximately 7 months.
Rating: ***

Kenny Dykstra and some officials came in to check on Burke, who couldn't even stand up on his own. We'd later learn that Burke tore his right quadriceps muscle severely, and he is going to be out of action until some time in 2007. An unfortunate turn of events from Elijah Burke who was just getting his career started. Also, this leaves Dykstra without a partner for Chaos Reigns going into the hardcore match against Tommy Dreamer & Lance Cade.

Match #4
JTG vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin was in action next taking on one-half of Cryme Tyme, JTG. JTG had the X Title with him that he and Shad Gaspard stole from champion Gregory Helms last week. In an insert promo, Cryme Tyme explained that they stole the title because that's what they do - it's all about that "money, money, yeah, yeah." One man who was certainly not happy with this Helms, who came down to the ring during the match, grabbed the X Title from the ring apron, and started back up the apron. JTG went after him leading to him being counted out.

Shelton Benjamin defeated JTG by countout in 0:06:30.
Rating: ** ¾

Helms was pointing to his head like he outsmarted JTG, but he didn't notice SHAD GASPARD standing behind him on the top of the ramp. When Helms turned around, Gaspard leveled him with a hard right hand that caused Helms to roll back down the ramp to the feet of JTG. JTG calmly grabbed the X Title and joined Gaspard at the top of the ramp. Helms got to his feet and saw JTG holding the X Title again and sprinted toward them, only to be met with a big boot from Gaspard. It was a valiant effort, at least.

CHRISTIAN ONCE AGAIN TRIES HIS BEST TO MAKE RHYNO "COOL"
With Edge having a match tonight, it was Christian's responsibility to once again try to hip Rhyno up. This time they were out at a clothing store. Christian had several silk shirts with him and instructed Rhyno to go into one of the dressing rooms to try them on. Rhyno was tentative at first but eventually went in there. After a couple of minutes Captain Charisma became impatient and went into the dressing room to check on the Manbeast. When he entered, the shirts were on the ground and Rhyno was eating a plate of ribs! Christian and Rhyno stared at each other for a few moments before Christian yelled, "Who keeps bringing you ribs!?"

Match #5
AJ Styles vs. Edge (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
The other members of Must See TV were out shopping and rib eating, so Edge only had his Brothel with him as he took on AJ Styles. Both men will be in action this Sunday and would love to get some momentum going into the event. This was the match of the night as these two put on a tremendous match filled with counters, reversals, and nearfalls. In watching this match, you could almost sense that you were looking at two future World champions. Tonight, though, they were just looking to get a win, and that win went to Edge, who after a great match hit the Spear to get the duke.

Edge pinned AJ Styles with the Spear in 0:10:08.
Rating: **** 1/4

Despite the loss, Styles is primed and ready to get a measure of revenge against Chris Benoit, while Edge will try to slow the momentum that Matt Hardy has had in their feud as Edge teams with Christian to take on Hardy and Abyss.

Match #6
Abyss vs. Chris Benoit
Speaking of Abyss, he was in action taking on "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. Benoit's attitude change in recent weeks has been terrible as he has shown that he has no respect for anyone or anything, highlighted mostly by his vicious unprovoked attack on Paul London a few weeks ago, who is recovering from a severe broken back that nearly ended his career. Abyss didn't care much for any of that - when he's in the ring, he's there to hurt someone and win, plain and simple. This was one of the more hard-hitting matches we have seen on Explosion in a while, highlighted by Benoit being busted open when Abyss threw him into the steps outside. The Rabid Wolverine fought back though and did a great job of working on Abyss' arm setting up the Crippler Crossface while trying to prevent the Black Hole Slam. Unfortunately for Benoit, Abyss has a lot of other weapons, as he showed when he caught Benoit with a boot to the midsection as the Crippler jumped from the top. Abyss followed by drilling him with a power bomb and that was that.

Abyss pinned Chris Benoit after a power bomb in 0:13:08.
Rating: *** ¾

MNM INTERRUPT A DANIELS/PUNK STRATEGY SESSIONS
Christopher Daniels, CM Punk, and Daffney were discussing what they were going to do on Sunday as Daniels & Punk attempt to become the World Tag Team champions against MNM. They were interrupted by the champions - Johnny Nitro, Shannon Moore, and their manager, Melina. Melina openly laughed at Daniels & Punk, saying that she didn't buy it. According to her, no two people hate each other as much as Daniels & Punk do and there is no way in hell that they'd be able to get along to beat the superior team of MNM because they were both losers. Daffney then got in Melina's face and told her if she said one more word, she'd be in trouble. Melina got very serious and said, "The only person who is more pathetic than those two... is YOU." Daffney waited a moment before shrieking and attacking Melina and we had a CATFIGHT! The four men tried their best to keep the two slightly crazy women from tearing each other apart which was far easier said than done. Eventually the teams were able to get Daffney & Melina apart, but it was no small feat.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle/Monty Brown/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. John Bradshaw Layfield/Booker T/Randy Orton/Umaga (w/ Lamont & Armando Alejandro Estrada)
There was a ton of star power in our main event which also meant there was a lot of ego. JBL, Randy Orton, & Booker T made it pretty clear they were going to have trouble getting along and if it wasn't for their overall disdain of the opposition, they wouldn't have been able to pull it together long enough to wrestle in this match. The wild card got their team was Umaga, as I certainly didn't envy anyone having to try to talk strategy with that savage. Armando Alejandro Estrada did what he could to control the Samoan Bulldozer, but Estrada has shown very clearly that he's in it for himself. The face team however looked poised and ready for their opponents. Every man got in there and got to hit their spots, but Umaga was allowed to dominate a large chunk of the match by himself. Not a bad strategy if you ask me. As can tend to happen in these multi-man tag matches, the match got a bit hectic, but everyone was able to get their spots in. At the end of this match, it broke down and there was a lot of brawling on the floor. Monty Brown and Randy Orton were brawling their way up the ramp while Kurt Angle & Umaga brawled by the announce position. JBL managed to wipe out Mysterio by dropping him throat first over the guardrail as Lesnar & Booker T were the legal men in the ring. Referee Nick Patrick was doing his best to regain control on the outside which kept him blind to JBL nailing Lesnar in the back of the head with the cowbell as he had Booker up for the F-5. The World champion was knocked loopy as Booker finished him off with the Axe Kick.

John Bradshaw Layfield, Randy Orton, Umaga and Booker T defeated Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Monty Brown and Rey Mysterio Jr. when Booker pinned Lesnar with the Axe Kick in 0:18:49.
Rating: ***

After the match, Brock Lesnar appeared to be out of it as JBL had really nailed him with that cowbell. There are early reports that Lesnar suffered a mild concussion, so that has to be great news for John Bradshaw Layfield who has put his career on the line if he doesn't win the World Heavyweight Title this Sunday.

Final card for Chaos Reigns, July 23, 2006, live from Memphis, Tennessee

After those stips I'm assuming JBL is winning now. Guess I was right on that one after all.

Nice little segment with the heel faction for the main tonight. Think the faces had that same problem?

Wow, and that's it for Elijah. The Phenoms didn't last long, did they? Dykstra may need a new partner for the PPV. Maybe the Spirit Squad shall return...

Cryme Tyme are deliciously thriftful and have actually stolen something worth keeping. Which is lucky as I can't see either of them as X-Division contenders.

I could see the Rhyno/ribs gag being stretched to so many levels. Maybe they go to church and Rhyno goes into confessional and when nothing happens, the rest of MSTV and the priest open the door up... well, you know the rest.

That was interesting, BOTH Styles and Benoit picked up clean losses there before their match. Right now they're the two with the most intensity too which made it a surprise.

I guess the cowbell is now JBL's weapon of choice big time. And a huge win for Booker, but will it be enough come the PPV? Good main event though, everyone got plenty involved in that one.

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar © vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

After thirteen (I think) long months, JBL wins this one to claim his first world title. He has to though, given the circumstances.

Intercontinental Title Match - Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Booker T

And I'm going for Mysterio here, lest the criminal benefit from the crime.

World Tag Team Title Match - MNM © vs. CM Punk/Christopher Daniels

We've already got two title changes going on here, so MNM retain.

Kurt Angle vs. Umaga

Umaga with the upset.

AJ Styles vs. Chris Benoit

And Styles to take this one. I'm not sure how hard you'll be pushing Benoit considering.

Hardcore Match - Tommy Dreamer/Lance Cade vs. The Phenoms

Well it's not the FINAL card is it? What with Burke being out. I'm going to go for Dykstra and whomever to win anyway.

Monty Brown vs. Randy Orton

Orton to win here and keep his momentum rolling into a future title shot.

Matt Hardy/Abyss vs. Edge/Christian

And Hardy/Abyss here methinks.
Snabbit888Posted on 07/13/08 at 22:33:15

The hardest thing to do has been to keep writing Benoit like nothing happened.  Given the circumstances, in 2006 it would be silly just to suddenly depush him out of nowhere.  But I also don't want to be like, "Well he dies soon!  7 World title reigns!"  Blah.
SolomattGrundyPosted on 07/13/08 at 23:18:41

Hmm, Texas Bullrope match and if JBL loses, he leaves. I have a very bad feeling about this..

Hardy won, about as expected and him and Skipper have a fun little television match, all things considered.

Stevie Richards eats some nice squash at the hands of Mr. Burchill. I've said it before, no one eats squash like Stevie Richards.

Dissention in the heel ranks but Umaga's negoiation tactics show some excellent savvy :)

Ouch, Burke just came in and he gets hurt. That sucks.

Fun with Cryme Tyme, Helms, and Shelton. I would have put Shelton over cleanly, but other than that, no complaints

These Rhino segments are rather amusing.

Styles and Edge looked like a great match and Edge spears Styles for the pin.

Abyss beats Benoit! That actually surprised me a bit, given the fact that Benoit really took Abyss's arm apart. It just proves that Abyss is more than a one dimensional big man.

Daffney and Melina in a catfight. I would have hit the mute button, because I could just imagine the screaming between the two. Am I the only person who wants to see an six person intergender tag after this? Oh and the tag team match will be good as well.

Awesome tag team main event. Really hypes up the Pay Per View well. Booker pinning Lesnar, didn't really see that coming, but of course Booker couldn't have done it without the help of JBL.

Predictions
It looks like Lesnar's going to run JBL out of GCW.

Booker T pins Rey to win the Intercontinental Title.

MNM retain the tag team titles by cheating.

Umaga bulldozes Angle.

Styles beats Benoit, maybe by disqualification.

Doubt Burke's going to be up for it, but Dykstra and whatever partner he drags up will win this match.

Randy Orton wins.

Edge and Christian beat Hardy and Abyss. Edge cheats to pin Hardy.,

Harder still when it actually comes to writing in his death. In a perverse way I'm actually really interested to see that.

You should, you will never be able to put up porn the quality of Snabbit's.
