[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 7/3/06

Snabbit888Posted on 06/24/08 at 01:53:39

We are in the Big Apple, New York City, for another edition of Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, more matches will be announced for our next pay-per-view, Chaos Reigns! Also, Mick Foley will have an announcement in regards to the condition of Intercontinental champion, Bobby Lashley, who was brutally assaulted by Blackout a week ago. Also, Christopher Daniels will meet one half of the World Tag Team champions, Shannon Moore! All of that and a whole lot more!

MICK FOLEY GIVES AN UPDATE ON BOBBY LASHLEY AND THE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE
The show kicked off back in the office of Commissioner Mick Foley, who had a few announcements to make. The first involved our next pay-per-view, Chaos Reigns, as Foley announced that the team of Tommy Dreamer & Lance Cade will take on the Phenoms in a hardcore match. Foley shifted to Bobby Lashley, citing that based on the vicious attack by Blackout a week ago, Lashley suffered a severed injury to his right knee. Lashley will be on the shelf for several months while he recovers, and therefore, Foley had no choice but to strip him of the Intercontinental Title. He went on to say that an 8-man tournament will start tonight to crown a new IC champion with the finals taking place at Chaos Reigns. The brackets are as follows:

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Paul Burchill
AJ Styles vs. X champion Gregory Helms
Monty Brown vs. Booker T
Tommy Dreamer vs. Chris Benoit

At this point, STEVIE RICHARDS walked in to talk to Foley. Richards said that he's been thinking a lot lately and he is tired of losing all the time and tired of being considered a joke. "I didn't get into this business to be a clown. I got into this business to be a champion." Stevie asked Foley to help him get his mojo back. Foley agreed and said Stevie could be his assistant and help him out to get his "mojo" back.

Match #1
Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Paul Burchill
We kicked off the show right away with our first Intercontinental Title tournament match as Rey Mysterio Jr. took on Paul Burchill. Mysterio is no stranger to gold, having held the Television and Cruiserweight Titles in the past. Burchill wisely attacked Mysterio before the bell to try to keep him from taking off, but Mysterio is THE best high flyer in the world, and it's not as easy as just grounding him. Mysterio frustrated Burchill throughout this match with his speed and quickness, eventually leading to Burchill getting fed up, losing his cool, and blasting Mysterio with a chair.

[Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round]:
Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Paul Burchill by disqualification in 0:06:45.
Rating: ** ¾

Burchill didn't seem to care that he got disqualified as he walked away with disgust. Mysterio may not look like a winner, but he has moved on to the semi-finals

JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD MEETS WITH MICK FOLEY
We cut back to the office of Mick Foley where John Bradshaw Layfield and his limo driver Lamont are standing. Foley tries to talk, but he is cut off by JBL who goes on a long diatribe about how glad he is that Bobby Lashley is hurt and how he assumes that Foley called him in here to award the Intercontinental Title back to him so he can become a double champion at Chaos Reigns. Instead, Foley told JBL that he would be wrestling in the main event against Randy Orton. JBL tried to protest, but Foley's decision was, of course, FINAL.

Match #2
The Bulldogs vs. Must See TV (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
As our next match began, announcers Michael Cole & Todd Grisham announced that Edge & Christian will meet Matt Hardy & Abyss at Chaos Reigns. Before that, the members of Must See TV had to get past The Bulldogs. Preparing for a match with Edge & Christian is made even harder by the fact that Edge's Brothel has shown that they are more than anxious to get involved in a match if they can help their man win. This happened tonight as the Brothel used all of the assets at their disposal to distract Kazarian and Smith, allowing MSTV to walk away with a win.

Must See TV (Christian and Edge) defeated The Bulldogs (Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith) when Edge pinned Kazarian with the Spear in 0:04:47.
Rating: *** 1/4

MONTY BROWN CONFRONTS RANDY ORTON
We see Randy Orton in his locker room lacing up his boots in preparation for the main event match when MONTY BROWN burst into the room in a hurry and got right in Orton's face. Orton asked the Alpha Male what he was doing there and Brown told him he had a big problem with how he eliminated him from the battle royal last week. Orton told him he did what he had to do and he doesn't care what Brown or anyone else thinks. Brown retorted that Orton was going to care when he felt the Pounce. Orton tried to keep his stare but you can tell he was a bit rattled until Brown left without anymore incident.

Match #3
Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round
Monty Brown vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell & Elix Skipper)
After that intense confrontation, Brown came down for his first round match against Booker T. Many fans were upset that Booker was even allowed to be in this tournament considering it was his attack on Bobby Lashley that caused his injury in the first place. Regardless, he is in and we had a good intense match. Booker thought he may have beaten the system by getting to be in this match, but that wasn't the case as Brown was as intense as ever and dominated a good portion of this match. It looked dire for Booker when Brown nailed him with the Pounce, but before he could cover, Sharmell was up on the apron and had the attention of referee Chad Patton. Elix Skipper jumped in the ring and hit Brown with a forearm to the back, but all it did was pissed the Alpha Male off. Prime Time looked like he had seen a ghost and quickly jumped out of the ring with Brown giving chase right behind him. Skipper tried to run up the ramp but Brown caught him. Brown was ready to level Skipper, but instead, RANDY ORTON came out of nowhere and nailed Brown in the back of the head with the Money in the Bank briefcase! Brown was out cold and was thus counted out.

[Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round]:
Booker T defeated Monty Brown by countout in 0:08:47.
Rating: *** ½

Booker was still down and didn't even realize he had won, but win he did. Skipper & Sharmell quickly got him out of there. Officials came to help Brown up, but he shoved them all away violently and stormed to the back looking for Randy Orton.

Match #4
Christopher Daniels (w/ Daffney & CM Punk) vs. Shannon Moore (w/ Melina & Johnny Nitro)
Last week Christopher Daniels saving CM Punk came off as quite a shock. This week as Daniels took on Shannon Moore of MNM, there was no surprise as to where he stood as CM Punk & Daffney were down at ringside with him. Melina especially was not thrilled with this as she spent a good chunk of this match badmouthing Daffney. It didn't take long for Johnny Nitro to try to get involved, but he was cut off by Punk. During the confusion, the Fallen Angel reversed a flying crossbody attempt by Moore into a powerslam and got the 3 count.

Christopher Daniels pinned Shannon Moore after a powerslam in 0:04:01.
Rating: *** 1/4

Match #5
Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round
AJ Styles vs. Gregory Helms (X champion)
Gregory Helms is already the reigning X champion which is what earned him a spot in the Intercontinental Title tournament. His opponent was AJ Styles, who did an insert promo as he came to the ring. Styles addressed Chris Benoit, saying he took great offense to the Crippler's completely heinous and unnecessary attack on his friend and former tag team partner Paul London a week ago. Styles concluded by letting Benoit know he had better be prepared to watch his back, because karma is a bitch.

The match itself was very intense and fast-paced with Styles seeming to have a little extra spring in his step. But he wasn't counting on was that Chris Benoit had heard his insert promo and decided to do a preemptive strike, blasting Styles in the back with a chair on the floor! Referee Mike Chioda didn't see the chair shot as he was checking on Helms' "injured knee" but the knee seemed fine when he quickly capitalized with the Shining Wizard and a berth in the semi-finals.

[Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round]:
Gregory Helms pinned AJ Styles with the Shining Wizard in 0:09:46.
Rating: *** ¾

Benoit walked back up the ramp with a sick smile on his face, not even looking back at the damage he did in the ring. When Styles came to and saw the replay on the VideoTron of what happened, he got a look of rage on his face and sprinted to the back in search of Benoit.

SHELTON BENJAMIN EXPLAINS HIS NEW ATTITUDE
Maria was standing by with Shelton Benjamin, asking him about his recent transformation. Benjamin echoed his remarks from Super Cade about Charlie Haas, saying he carried the team and that the World's Greatest Tag Team should have been called "The World's Greatest Wrestler Plus Charlie Haas' Worthless Ass." Benjamin declared himself "The Gold Standard" and that it's only a matter of time before he is holding singles gold.

Match #6
Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round
Tommy Dreamer vs. Chris Benoit
This wasn't the first time we saw Chris Benoit tonight as it wasn't long ago that he cost AJ Styles his first round match. Now he had his against Tommy Dreamer. This was big for Dreamer too. If he makes it to the finals of the tournament, he will have not one but two matches at Chaos Reigns as he is already signed, along with partner Lance Cade, to take on The Phenoms in a hardcore match. The Innovator of Violence is one of the hardest working men in wrestling and he would look forward to that opportunity. Getting by Benoit is far easier said than done as he had his work cut out for him. Dreamer surprised a lot of people with how proficient he was at mat wrestling. The guy is most famous for the crazy violence he has both dished out and received that people often forget he is an actual wrestler as well. Dreamer did enough wrestling to keep Benoit off-balance and when the momentum was shifting the Crippler's way, Dreamer turned it into a brawl. Benoit sensed the match getting away from him and showed just how far he has denigrated, pulling referee Nick Patrick in front of him when Dreamer charged the corner. Patrick was wiped out and a kick below the belt from Benoit stopped Dreamer in his tracks. The Rabid Wolverine rolled out to the floor and threw ring announcer Justin Roberts out of his chair and brought it in the ring. Before Benoit could swing the chair though, AJ STYLES was in the ring behind him with a chair of his own. Styles tapped Benoit on the shoulder, and when he turned around, Styles unleashed a vicious chair shot, echoing off of Benoit's head with a sickening thud. Benoit fell like a ton of bricks as Styles removed himself and the evidence from the ring. Dreamer had no clue what happened and he didn't much care as he dropped Benoit with the Dreamer DDT and that was all she wrote.

[Intercontinental Title Tournament - First Round]:
Tommy Dreamer pinned Chris Benoit with the Dreamer DDT in 0:12:08.
Rating: *** ½

Just as Benoit had done to Styles before, Styles turned the table and caused the Crippler's elimination from the tournament. Knowing that if something wasn't done about this situation, Mick Foley has signed a match between these two in an effort to let these two settle their differences before it gets carried away, and it will take place at Chaos Reigns.

KURT ANGLE WANTS TO CLIMB BACK UP THE LADDER, BUT GETS AN UNEXPECTED GUEST
Before our main event, we had an interview in the ring with former World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle. Angle put over Brock Lesnar as a great champion and said that he wants to work his way back up the ladder. Angle said he doesn't care who he has to face in the ring, he will beat them all and earn another shot at the top prize in the game. This brought out ARMANDO ALEJANDRO ESTRADA, and the unstoppable beast UMAGA. Estrada looked ultra smug, telling Angle to be careful what he wishes for as he just might get it. To Angle's credit, he didn't back down, saying if Umaga wanted to go he would be more than willing to go. Estrada told Angle to put his money where his mouth is and made a challenge for Chaos Reigns, which the Olympic champion quickly accepted. Estrada demanded that Angle shake his hand to seal the deal, but the handshake was just a distraction so Umaga could get the jump on him. The Samoan Bulldozer proceeded to destroy Angle as he has done to so many others since debuting in April. Angle didn't even have a chance to get out of the blocks before Umaga had him down and out with the Samoan Spike. We haven't seen Angle dominated like that in a very long time. He might have bitten off more than he can chew.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Randy Orton v. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Though neither Randy Orton nor John Bradshaw Layfield is remotely popular with the fans, the two definitely don't like each other either, spawning back to the short-lived Corporation and battles (along with Kurt Angle) over the Intercontinental Title. Orton has a meanstreak, and one thing that JBL certainly didn't want was to suffer any sort of injury going into his World Heavyweight Title match at Chaos Reigns. After a tough fought match, the Money in the Bank winner had JBL primed and ready for the RKO when Lamont jumped in the ring and jumped on Orton's back. Orton easily dumped Lamont over his head and out of the ring, but it was enough of a distraction for JBL to hit a low blow for the blatant disqualification.

Randy Orton defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:06:03.
Rating: * ½

JBL continued the assault on Orton, dropping him with a huge power bomb. Lamont had run back to the limo and returned with a huge bull rope, complete with a cowbell right in the middle! JBL wrapped the bull rope around Orton's throat and was trying to hang him from the top rope when BROCK LESNAR ran in to make the save! He hit JBL with several hard right hands before throwing him into the ropes and catching him with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. JBL rolled out of the ring and retreated to the back. Lesnar turned around to check on Orton, only to turn right into the RKO! Talk about gratitude! The show went off the air with Orton standing over Lesnar and holding the briefcase high above his head.

Wait, WHAT?!? Lashley's injured? Did you write that in or did he get injured at Super Cade or something? Because if you wrote that in... that's an odd one, why'd you do that?

Lumping all the tournament matches in one go... we've got Mysterio, Booker, Helms and Dreamer advancing, all in screwy fashion in one way or another. Booker seems the obvious choice to win it, but I've got a suspicion as to otherwise, but I'm waiting to see the semi final draw first. Most of those matches help shape the PPV some, whether it's the winners or the losers with matches in mind. And Orton/Brown... that one was built quickly. Still, should be a good one. More on Orton in a bit...

MSTV win again, I wouldn't mind seeing them in the tag title hunt or something at some point, but we're still waiting for the big Hardy blowoff.

Angle vs Umaga? That's another interesting one, and one the WWE never did. For obvious reasons. I'm thinking the PPV won't be that one sided though.

Benjamin is a dick.

JBL is a dick too. And Orton for that matter. But JBL, that's dickery at its highest, there was no need for that. And Orton at the end, the MitB angle is a lot of fun to run with, now we play the waiting game as to when he'll cash that bad boy in.

I didn't write in Lashley's injury.  He did get hurt at Super Cade, but I wanted to at least storyline it so I had something to do.  I had intentions for him to feud with Booker anyway, so this just extends it.

Then it all makes sense. I'm guessing you deliberately didn't put it in the Super Cade results in order to make the angle a surprise.
