[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 6/26/06

Snabbit888Posted on 06/17/08 at 01:28:30

We are just 24 hours removed from the biggest night in GCW history, Super Cade III! We were back in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for Monday Night Explosion! Last night's show has been called epic, but GCW would not rest as the action would continue! On tonight's show, we will hear from Brock Lesnar who retained the World Heavyweight Title in a classic Iron Man match against Kurt Angle one night ago! Also, we will see the tag team debut of Kenny Dykstra and the debuting Elijah Burke, collectively the Phenoms! Shelton Benjamin will be in a singles action and Commissioner Mick Foley will make a huge announcement concerning our next pay-per-view, Chaos Reigns!

MICK FOLEY MAKES HIS ANNOUNCEMENT AND SETS UP TONIGHT'S MAIN EVENT
Mick Foley came out and started by putting over the success of Super Cade III, proclaiming that it should have the highest buyrate in GCW history and will be an event that's talked about for years to come. Foley said that GCW is not going to rest on their laurels and that they're already looking ahead to our next pay-per-view, Chaos Reigns, which takes place on July 23rd from Memphis, Tennessee. He wants to waste no time in setting up the main event for that event and said that tonight there will be a 20-man battle royal with the winner moving onto Chaos Reigns to challenge Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Title. Lesnar has held the championship for over a year now and it will be interesting to see who will be the next in line for a title shot.

Match #1
Shark Boy vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin received less than a warm reception, which is not at all surprising given what he did to his former partner Charlie Haas last night. We learned from Michael Cole & Paul Heyman that Haas' ankle is shattered and he is expected to be out for several months. Many felt this was a long time coming, but it still doesn't excuse his actions. Benjamin has said in the past that he wants to try his hand in singles competition, and he can do that now, starting with his match against Shark Boy. Benjamin's new cocky attitude was apparent but say what you want about him - he has the skills to be a big star in the ring. He had little trouble finishing Shark Boy off with his new finisher he calls the Paydirt.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Shark Boy with the Paydirt in 0:01:24.
Rating: **

Benjamin's journey into singles wrestling gets off to a good start. The sky's the limit.

Match #2
Cryme Tyme vs. Lance Hoyt/Stevie Richards
Tag team action was next with Cryme Tyme taking on the makeshift team of Lance Hoyt & Stevie Richards. Needless to say, there was little to no chemistry between Hoyt & Richards and it showed. They had never really teamed in the past and quite frankly, if there performance tonight is any indication, they should make this a one night deal. Shad Gaspard & JTG had little trouble putting this one away and getting the duke.

Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG) defeated Lance Hoyt and Stevie Richards when JTG pinned L. Hoyt after the G 9 in 0:03:34.
Rating: ** ¾

BOOKER T TRIES A LITTLE RECRUITING
Bobby Lashley was seen backstage holding his newly won Intercontinental Title when he was approached by BOOKER T, ELIX SKIPPER, & SHARMELL, who are now calling themselves "Blackout." Booker, as he usually does, did most of the talking, congratulating Lashley on his victory over JBL a night ago. Booker said that Lashley is obviously a force to be reckoned with for a long time in GCW, but he's not there yet. "Everyone is going to be gunning for you, Lashley, and you need our help." Booker asked Lashley to join their ranks. Lashley thought about it before declining the offer. Lashley started to walk away, but it was a mistake as Booker & Skipper jumped him by throwing him into a wall. Booker & Skipper put the boots to the IC champion and ended the assault by viciously throwing Lashley down a flight of stairs! Lashley immediately clutched his knee as Booker badmouthed him from the top of the stairs. We don't have any word yet on Lashley's status, but early reports say it doesn't look good.

Match #3
The Bulldogs vs. The Phenoms
Kenny Dykstra returned last night and along with his brand new partner, Elijah Burke, cost Tommy Dreamer his match against Booker T. Dykstra has oodles of talent but a terrible attitude, blaming Dreamer for his lack of success instead of working harder to better himself. We hadn't seen Burke in the ring before, but we soon learned how impressive this young man is. Heyman let us know that Burke has an extensive amateur boxing record, having gone 98-1 before turning to professional wrestling. Frankie Kazarian & Harry Smith had some trouble as they weren't sure what to expect from this new team, but they have really gotten on track and are a tough match each and every time out there. The Phenoms showed that they would do anything to win, cheating as often as they could behind referee Charles Robinson's back. The Phenoms would make their debut a successful one after hitting the Spike Piledriver on Harry Smith.

The Phenoms (Kenny Dykstra and Elijah Burke) defeated The Bulldogs (Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith) when E. Burke pinned Smith after the Spike Piledriver in 0:05:28.
Rating: *** ¾

Dykstra & Burke started to celebrate their win, but it didn't last long as TOMMY DREAMER was out and he had a Singapore cane in hand! Dreamer nailed Dykstra in the back to a huge pop and started laying waste to Kenny. All of Dreamer's focus was on Dykstra which allowed Burke to suckerpunch him in the ear, causing Dreamer to drop his cane and hit the mat. The Phenoms put the boots to him, but Dreamer was saved when LANCE CADE ran out, also armed with a Singapore cane! Cade cracked Burke in the skull causing him to fly to the floor. Cade took a swing at Dykstra but Dykstra ducked and got out of Dodge. The Phenoms went to the back licking their wounds as Dreamer & Cade stood tall in the ring sporting their canes.

PAUL LONDON MAKES A SURPRISE APPEARANCE
When we returned from commercial, we were surprised by an appearance from PAUL LONDON. London came out in a back brace as he is still recovering from a career-threatening broken back he suffered last July. London received a standing ovation as he slowly made his way to the ring and with help from ring announcer Justin Roberts, got in the ring. London took the mic and after pausing to soak in the applause, thanked all of the fans for their support over the past year and how much it has meant to him. He said he has been rehabbing extensively and he is going to try to make a comeback to the ring, something he thought impossible a year ago. London said he still had a long way to go, but he is determined to one day make it back to a GCW ring. London started to leave, but at this point CHRIS BENOIT was out to the ring. Benoit sarcastically wished London the best before telling him to get out of the ring. London wanted to protest, but he knew he was in no condition to get in a confrontation, so he went to leave the ring. I guess for Benoit's liking he wasn't moving fast enough as the Crippler started insulting him, calling him a cripple and saying that he'd never wrestle again which is fine because no one wanted him around anyway. London stopped and turned back toward Benoit and said something along the lines of, "What did I do to you, man?" London again went to leave the ring, but this time Benoit jumped him and hit a German suplex! No one could believe what was happening as Benoit kicked London repeatedly in the back before ribbing off London's back brace and hitting a backbreaker. The Rabid Wolverine wasn't done as he put the injured London in the Crippler Crossface and pulled back as far as he could. Thankfully after a long minute of London being in the hold, AJ STYLES, London's former tag team partner, ran to the ring to break it up. He went after Benoit, but the former World champion saw him coming and slide to the floor, giving a sick smile as he did so. Medical officials came down to check on London, who was rushed to the hospital. No one can deny Benoit's skills as an athlete, but that was one of the most despicable things I have ever witnessed. This may prevent London from ever returning.

Match #4
CM Punk (w/ Daffney) vs. Johnny Nitro (1/2 World Tag Team champions) (w/ Melina & Shannon Moore)
Before we got to the big battle royal, we had a singles match pitting CM Punk against one half of the World Tag Team champions, Johnny Nitro. Punk was a bit worse for wear, sporting a bandage after the brutality that was Hell in a Cell, a losing effort against Christopher Daniels. This was a helluva match. We haven't seen much of Nitro in singles action, but there is no doubting that he is a tremendous athlete. He also has that killer instinct and it showed when he went right after Punk's wound and busted him open again. Punk was not on top of his game losing a good amount of blood in this contest, but he pushed through. Nitro chose to gloat and point to his abs later in the match instead of putting Punk away, which allowed Punk to hit an enzuigiri out of nowhere and get the 3.

CM Punk pinned Johnny Nitro after an enzuigiri in 0:13:07.
Rating: *** ¾

Melina wasn't going to stand for a flash pin like that and sent Shannon Moore into the ring, who clubbed Punk in the back of the head with a forearm. When Nitro regained his senses, he joined in on the beating. They had Punk set up for the Snapshot, but they were stopped when CHRISTOPHER DANIELS ran in and took Moore's legs out from underneath him! Nitro took a swing at Daniels, but the Fallen Angel ducked, booted Nitro in the gut, and drilled him with the Angel's Wings! Simultaneously, Punk was up and hit the G.T.S. on Moore. Punk & Daniels then tossed the members of MNM out and to the floor, standing tall in the ring. Punk & Daniels looked at each other and then shook hands which got a huge pop. After their months and months of feuding, it looks like Punk & Daniels are finally on the same page.

PAUL HEYMAN HAS AN OFFER FOR BROCK LESNAR
Right before our main event, Paul Heyman interviewed World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who received the night off due to having wrestled a full hour to retain his championship at Super Cade. Lesnar put over Kurt Angle, saying he is not only honored to have wrestled him last night, but also to call him friend. He said that Angle is one of the best in the business and any time he wanted a rematch, it was his. Heyman went on to try to conduct a little business of his own. He told Lesnar that it's impressive that he has held the World Heavyweight Title for over a year, but there is so much more he could be doing, citing television and movies as big money making opportunities. Heyman said he helped discover Lesnar and bring him into this business, and he wanted to be his agent again, saying he could make Lesnar a star in the "Hogan and Rock level." Lesnar thought about it before giving Heyman an emphatic, "NO!" Heyman was shocked that Lesnar turned him down, and ran him down, telling him he was an ingrate and an ungrateful schmuck. Lesnar was smirking, which got Heyman even more enraged. Eventually Heyman's temper got the better of him and he smacked Lesnar across the face! Heyman immediately realized the error of his ways and tried to apologize, but it was too late as in the blink of the eye, he was up and dropped to the mat with the F-5! Lesnar soaked in the huge pop he received as Heyman had to be stretchered out of the arena and taken to a local hospital. So much for Heyman's business proposition.

Match #5
MAIN EVENT
On Commentary: Brock Lesnar
20-man Battle Royal - Winner receives World Heavyweight Title shot at Chaos Reigns
Brock Lesnar stuck around and joined Michael Cole on commentary, since, well, someone had to with Paul Heyman on his way to the hospital. Plus, he wanted a front row seat to see who he'd be facing at Chaos Reigns. One of the more shocking entrants was Kurt Angle, who we told was originally given the night off but being the competitor he is, took Bobby Lashley's place in an effort to get one more shot at the World Heavyweight Title. The first man to be eliminated from the match was Tommy Dreamer, thanks to THE PHENOMS appearing at the top of the ramp to taunt him. Dreamer's attention was directed toward them, which allowed X champion Gregory Helms to dump him to the floor.

Another surprising entrant was Randy Orton, who with winning Money in the Bank last night has a World Title shot coming to him whenever he wants. Orton's justification was that if he won this battle royal, he'd have a guaranteed title shot PLUS still have the Money in the Bank in his pocket just in case. He looked good early as he eliminated Rob Van Dam, goading him into heading to the top rope and dropkicking him off to the floor. Also looking great in this match was Booker T, who would make the next two eliminations, not only shocking everyone by singlehandedly throwing Abyss out of the ring, but following it up by tossing Helms to the floor, leaving us with 16 competitors.

With the ring emptying a bit, that gave AJ Styles a wide open alley to get to Chris Benoit, who was still receiving a huge negative reaction from the fans after his heinous assault on Paul London's broken back earlier. Styles was a man possessed as he pounced on Benoit, unloading with lefts and rights. Styles didn't even notice anybody else in the ring, which allowed Edge to nail him from behind and break it up. However, this caused Edge not to see Matt Hardy kick him in the stomach, drill him with the Twist of Fate, and throw him to the floor! Hardy has gotten the best of Edge once again. Edge would get a matter of revenge though when he jumped back in the ring and planted Hardy with the Spear, leaving V.1 easy pickings for Paul Burchill and an elimination from the match.

Styles was still intent on pummeling Benoit, and this time it was Christian who tried to break it up. Christian received a fireman's carry into a knee neckbreaker for his troubles and a ticket to the locker room. This allowed Benoit to nail Styles with a low blow and put some separation between the two. Up until this point, Kurt Angle had been picking his shots and doing what he could, but he was clearly exhausted after giving everything he had in the Iron Man match. Orton used this to his advantage, luring Angle into a false sense of security. When Angle lifted Orton up for the Angle Slam, Orton reversed it and planted Angle with a DDT. Angle was wiped out sent out of the ring, and we had just 12 men remaining. That number would soon become 10 as Burchill proved himself to be an opportunist. He saw Lance Cade & Rey Mysterio Jr. fighting it out and trying to push each other over the top. Burchill saw this and capitalized by dumping both men over the top.

There was still a ton of talent in the ring, but it was Booker T & Elix Skipper who had the biggest advantage as they were the only men left in the ring with a clear alliance. They used this alliance effectively as they were picking their shots, staying close, and making sure the other wasn't eliminated. Speaking of, the next elimination would be Rhyno, made the mistake of interrupting Styles when he was going after Benoit and suffered a similar fate to Christian before. Orton would try the same thing, but he was a bit smarter about it and ran from Styles when he did it. Styles got overzealous and dove at Orton, who ducked and sent Styles crashing to the floor.

The 8 men left were Orton, Benoit, Booker, Skipper, John Bradshaw Layfield, Burchill, Monty Brown, and the undefeated Umaga. On paper, this didn't look at all good for Brown, as it was 7 heels against him. Fortunately for him, even though he received a huge beating, a lot of these guys are egomaniacs and attacked each other instead, Orton even making the elimination of Benoit. At this point, Monty Brown went nuts, dominating everyone in the ring. Skipper, Booker, and Burchill tried to slow him down, but that didn't turn out too well for any of them. The Alpha Male dumped Skipper out of the ring, ducked a clothesline from Burchill and then clotheslined him over the top. Booker got one shot in on Brown, but Brown shrugged it off, lifted Booker over his head with a Gorilla Press, and then threw him over the top onto Skipper & Burchill, taking him out of the ring!

The final four, and looked like Brown had expelled all of his energy. It looked especially bad when Umaga confronted him. Brown thought about it for a minute, looked at Umaga, and told him to bring it on. The crowd was on its feet as Brown & Umaga slugged it out, but they cheered even more when the Alpha Male received an unexpected assist from JBL & Orton. They assumed Umaga would be the bigger threat and this was their change to get rid of him. JBL blindsided the Samoan Bulldozer with the Stock Market Crash and Orton hit the RKO. They both held Umaga up which allowed Brown to hit the Pounce. The three picked the savage up and tossed him out, leaving three. This alliance was short lived though as JBL hit Brown with a low blow and Orton hit the RKO. Orton & JBL laughed at their double cross of Brown as Orton took his time to throw Brown out of the ring. You can't trust JBL though, and Orton should know that as the issues between them go back a long time. JBL turned on Orton like a cobra, tossing him out of the ring to win the match!

It only took one elimination, but John Bradshaw Layfield has earned himself a shot at the World Heavyweight Title, just one day removed from losing the Intercontinental Title. Lesnar applauded JBL and said that he knows he will have his work cut out for him as JBL will do whatever it takes to win the title. The show went off the air with JBL motioning to Lesnar that the World Heavyweight Title was coming to him.

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar © vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
91Posted on 07/13/08 at 19:51:41

These days I like to actually take the time to sit down and read your (and Mattharms) stuff properly, only I never usually have that time. Today I have ample, so I'll recap the last month that I've missed AND in doing so get your cards back in order. Aren't I good to you?

Benjamin's single push gets rolling then. Like I said before, this keeps him running until Haas gets back and they do their feud. Presuming you haven't future endeavoured him.

Hmmm, Booker the first guy to challenge Lashley for the title then. Actually Booker was one of those I thought might take the belt from Lashley in the long run, but not if he's the first challenger. And Blackout? Why'd you come up with that name?

I forget when the Bulldogs last did anything of note actually. But the Phenoms get off to a nice start, and have themselves an early feud. That should get them noticed at least.

Benoit is a jerk. And still a year shy of dying, so he's got plenty more chicanery to come no doubt.

Remember when I said I wasn't sure what was next for Punk and Daniels? Guess that answers me question. And a tag shot to boot.

Hey, Heyman is going to take the next step up and become an active part of the storyline. I'm cool with that. Although Lesnar's next challenger is coming up next, I'm assuming Heyman has something in the long run.

Talking about Orton having two title shots in the bag gave me an idea should I ever use the MitB gimmick myself.

JBL has come a long way from the guy that never wins to being the #1 contender. And you know what? I reckon he's got a shot at this, but I want to see how the next few weeks pan out first. Which I'll do... right now.
