[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/29/06

Snabbit888Posted on 05/08/08 at 12:22:41

Welcome to Cleveland, Ohio, the home of the Cleveland Indians and this week, the home for Global Championship Wrestling as we were live for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's broadcast, the Road to Super Cade continued with a lot of great action. The World Tag Team Titles would be on the line as MNM would defend against the Bulldogs! Lance Cade would be in action against Elix Skipper, Chris Benoit, AJ Styles, and Umaga would tangle in a Triple Threat match, we would see the naming of a brand new commissioner, and in our main event, Kurt Angle goes one-on-one with Booker T!

THE NEW COMMISSIONER IS NAMED, AND HE WASTES NO TIME MAKING DECISIONS
After how the show ended last week with the huge brawl between Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle, we knew that we were in desperate need of a new commissioner in GCW. This week's edition of Monday Night Explosion kicked off with that man being named. There was a dramatic silence before we heard the dramatic car crash sound and out came MICK FOLEY to a thunderous applause! Mick Foley is the new commissioner of GCW! Foley came out and after working the crowd and receiving the hometown cheap pop, he got right down to business saying he is going to run things the way only he can. First off, he mentioned the great job that Tommy Dreamer did as commissioner, but he made a mistake by getting physically involved in a confrontation, and thus, Dreamer will never be the commissioner again. Foley went on though and said that his first act as commissioner was to sign Tommy Dreamer to a wrestling contract, and that at Super Cade, it will be Dreamer vs. Booker T!

Foley continued by saying that wouldn't be the only addition made to Super Cade tonight, turning his attention to the situation with Lesnar & Angle. Foley said that obviously emotions are high when it comes to the World Title, and that you'd be hard-pressed to find two athletes more driven to be the champion than Lesnar & Angle. He went on saying that a regular singles match between these two would be great, but it was something we've seen before at Super Cade II. Foley wanted to make his mark on GCW quickly, and he did just that by announcing that the match between Lesnar & Angle at Super Cade III would be an Iron Man Match! One hour, whoever scores the most falls in that time frame wins. This could go down as the greatest match in GCW history!

Match #1
X Title Match
Gregory Helms © vs. Shark Boy
The wrestling of the night kicked off with an X Title defense from Gregory Helms, the second week in a row that Helms has defended his newly won title. Tonight he defended against a former Cruiserweight champion, Shark Boy. Shark Boy is great at getting an opponent off-balance because to be frank, he's a little nuts. Helms' new attitude though does not play well with that uniqueness, and was all over Sharky from the opening bell. It didn't take long for Helms to hit the Shining Wizard and make this title defense a successful one.

Gregory Helms pinned Shark Boy with the Shining Wizard in 0:03:55.
Rating: ***
(Gregory Helms retained the GCW X Title.)

Match #2
World Tag Team Title Match
MNM © (w/ Melina) vs. The Bulldogs
MNM have shown to be a great tag team, which you have to be in order to defeat the World's Greatest Tag Team to win the straps. The WGTT get a rematch at Super Cade, but Johnny Nitro & Shannon Moore had to be careful not to overlook Harry Smith & Frankie Kazarian in this one or they could find themselves on the outside looking in at Super Cade. The Bulldogs had nothing to lose, and since they've gotten on the same page finally, they have really turned it up in the ring. MNM seemed to be suffering from a bit of complacency, and it almost cost them the titles. They proved to be resourceful and thanks to a well-timed distraction from Melina, Moore hit the Mooregasm and the titles were retained.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated The Bulldogs (Harry Smith and Frankie Kazarian) when S. Moore pinned Kazarian with the Mooregasm in 0:06:23.
Rating: *** ¾
(MNM retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

A good title defense for MNM, but they are going to need to focus more if they're going to get past the World's Greatest Tag Team on June 25th.

CHRISTOPHER DANIELS WANTS TO END IT WITH CM PUNK ONCE AND FOR ALL
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels was in a dark locker room, reminiscent to the interviews that CM Punk does. Speaking of Punk, that was who was on Daniels' mind for this vignette. Daniels said that he doesn't know what Punk's angle is, but he knows with Punk, there is always something more to it. Daniels referenced Punk sacrificing his own head a week ago by allowing Gregory Helms to crack him with a chair to protect Daniels. The Fallen Angel was tired of these mind games and he was going to put an end to it at Super Cade. Daniels challenged Punk to a match at the pay-per-view, but not just in any match, but HELL IN A CELL. Daniels has to realize how dangerous this match is. From what we've learned from GCW.com, CM Punk has indeed accepted this challenge, if for the only reason being to bury this hatchet with Daniels once and for all.

Match #3
Lance Cade (w/ Tommy Dreamer) vs. Elix Skipper (w/ Booker T & Sharmell)
Lance Cade surprised a lot of people when he returned last week and saved Tommy Dreamer from a 2-on-1 attack at the hands of Booker T and Elix Skipper. Cade was in action tonight against Prime Time, but there were a lot of combustible elements at ringside with Dreamer in Cade's corner and Booker & Sharmell in Skipper's. We don't know a lot about Cade as an in-ring competitor, but he is definitely an athlete. Skipper has an experience advantage over him though, and he used that to keep control of most of this match. Prime Time became a bit too cocky though and let it cost him the match. He probably could have beaten Cade earlier, but he chose to inflict more punishment (at Booker's urging), hitting him with a picture perfect dragon suplex. Problem for Skipper, his shoulders were down as well, and at the last second, Cade managed to get his shoulder off the canvas. Skipper had pinned himself!

Lance Cade defeated Elix Skipper via pinfall in 0:08:40.
Rating: *** 1/4

Cade quickly rolled out of the ring and celebrated with Dreamer as Booker and Skipper were beside themselves in the ring. Cade and Dreamer win the first battle of this war, but you know that this is going to become more heated as we make our way to Dreamer vs. Booker at Super Cade.

Match #4
Bobby Lashley vs. Paul Burchill
This was Bobby Lashley's first match since breaking away from John Bradshaw Layfield a week ago, and the fans in Cleveland gave him a huge ovation as they've been wanting to cheer him for some time. Lashley's opponent was Paul Burchill, but this match didn't get much of a chance to get out of the blocks. Lashley was overpowering Burchill with ease, but that became irrelevant when JBL ran into the ring and smashed Lashley in the head with the Intercontinental Title!

Bobby Lashley defeated Paul Burchill by disqualification in 0:01:41.
Rating: **

JBL put the boots to Lashley with an intensity we haven't seen from him in the past. At one point Burchill looked to get in JBL's face about costing him the match, but when he saw the mood the IC champ was in, he thought better of it, instead retreating to the locker room. JBL was completely dominating Lashley, which is something we have never seen in GCW. JBL finished his attack off by dropping Lashley with the Stock Market Crash. After the show went off the air, we learned from GCW.com that it has been signed for Super Cade - John Bradshaw Layfield vs. Bobby Lashley for the Intercontinental Title!

CHARLIE HAAS TRIES TO GET SHELTON BENJAMIN EXCITED
We cut back to the locker room where we saw a seated Shelton Benjamin and a standing Charlie Haas talking. Haas was doing his best to get Benjamin excited for their title shot at Super Cade against MNM. As Haas made several failed attempts to get Benjamin pumped up, Benjamin eventually stopped him and said he was going to give it his all at Super Cade because that's the type of athlete he is, but if they don't manage to regain the World Tag Team Titles, he wanted to go their separate ways for awhile, citing his desire to go after singles championships. Haas said that was fine but wouldn't be an issue because he guaranteed they would be 6-time World Tag Team champions.

Match #5
Chris Benoit vs. AJ Styles vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
AJ Styles has been talking all week about how upset he is with Chris Benoit over getting involved in his match with Umaga a week ago. So this week, Styles would have a chance to beat both Benoit AND Umaga as the three locked up in a Triple Threat match. Despite Styles' current displeasure toward Benoit, he knew that his only chance to win this match would be to join forces with the Crippler to get past the Samoan Bulldozer. This plan worked well for some time as they managed to get Umaga off his feet, much to the chagrin of Armando Alejandro Estrada. When it came to who would get the pin on Umaga though, that's when things between Benoit & Styles fell apart and they fought each other. A dream match for fans, perhaps, but it didn't play into their favor here as it let Umaga recover to dismantle them both. A Samoan drop on Benoit and the Samoan Spike on Styles put this one in the books as another win for Umaga.

Triangle Match:
Umaga defeated AJ Styles and Chris Benoit when Umaga pinned Styles with the Samoan Spike in 0:08:55.
Rating: ****

Another week and another win for Umaga. After the match, Benoit & Styles had some choice words for each other but they left without incident.

Match #6
Abyss (w/ Maria) vs. Edge (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
With Matt Hardy officially back in GCW, Edge has to constantly be watching his back, but being distracted is not something you want to be against the Rated R Superstar's opponent tonight, Abyss. As a result, Edge was bounced around this ring like a Canadian basketball from the opening bell. To make matters worse for Edge, MATT HARDY did make an appearance at ringside, but he was held back by the GCW Official Brigade before he could get to the ring. Unfortunately for Abyss, the commotion allowed RHYNO to jump out of the crowd and nail Abyss with the Gore! Referee Chad Patton turned around in time to see Edge's cover, but Abyss was able to kick out! Edge was in shock, but he composed himself and hit the Spear on the groggy Abyss and this time, Abyss wasn't able to kick out.

Edge pinned Abyss with the Spear in 0:08:02.
Rating: *** ½

Matt Hardy managed to get into the ring after the bell rang, but Edge wisely made a hasty escape with his Brothel.

RANDY ORTON COMES UP WITH A NEW MATCH IDEA FOR SUPER CADE
Randy Orton came out next before our main event and he had a ladder with him. Orton set up the ladder and climbed to the top before he began talking. He said that he had a talk with Mick Foley and that he has pitched a brand new match idea for Super Cade. Orton said he was tired of being overlooked and tired of not being at the top of the ladder. Orton mentioned how his specialty is the ladder match, citing his victory over Shawn Michaels back in June of 2004. Orton said he should be in the main event at Super Cade, but since he can't be, he's going to steal the show. The match he came up with is called Money in the Bank. Six superstars will compete in a ladder match at Super Cade with a briefcase hanging over the ring. The first man to climb the ladder and retrieve the briefcase wins. In the briefcase is a contract for a World Heavyweight Title match that he can cash in at any time he wants for a full year. At this point, MONTY BROWN came to the ring and told Orton that if he thinks he is going to win this match at Super Cade, he had another thing coming as the Alpha Male was throwing his name in the hat. Orton told Brown he welcomed it as he wanted to beat the best, but everyone knows that Brown can't win the big one. Brown got right in Orton's face, but the Legend Killer wisely backed down and slowly started to leave the ring. Orton then tried to catch Brown by surprise with the RKO, but Brown shoved him off, hit the ropes, and leveled Orton with the Pounce! Orton flew out of the ring as the crowd cheered Brown on. Another match signed for Super Cade, and what a spectacle it should be!

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Kurt Angle vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell)
Booker T was officially back from suspension tonight to wrestle in our main event, and the opponent he got was Kurt Angle. The fans have certainly taken to hating Booker T, and with his recent actions, it's hard to blame them. Booker may regret his actions though as he is on a collision course with Tommy Dreamer at Super Cade, but he was going to have to worry about getting through Kurt Angle first. The match itself was what you would expect out of these two - a solid wrestling affair that the crowd was really into. Every time Booker was in control, the crowd let loose into him, which fueled Booker even more. Conversely when Angle was in control, the crowd was on its feet cheering loudly. It's important to note in this match that Booker T did a considerable number on Angle's knee, which could lead to problems going into the Iron Man Match. Angle fought back though despite the obvious pain he was in, dishing out as much as he was taking. Unfortunately, TOMMY DREAMER couldn't hold himself back any longer as he rushed the ring and attacked Booker T! This would have warranted a disqualification had BROCK LESNAR not ran in and did the same thing to Angle, leaving Nick Patrick with no choice but to throw this one out!

Booker T and Kurt Angle battled to a no contest in 0:16:58.
Rating: ***

Though we didn't have a clear winner, the fans didn't much care as we had two great fights going on at once! The show went off the air with Dreamer & Booker and Angle & Lesnar doing everything in their power to destroy each other. Be sure to join us next week though where we already know that we will see Monty Brown take on Randy Orton and the in-ring return of Tommy Dreamer as he goes against Booker T's running buddy, Elix Skipper! See you next week!

The feuds are progressing nicely towards Super Cade!

Speaking of Cade, why the name change of Lance/H.B.? Storyline that fizzled? It happens.

Mick Foley as commish should be good, but I don't think he'll last a full year if you'll get fired for getting physical. Foley always get physical when he's the commish. If you want to do this another way, you should consider turning him heel.

I know that you heavily borrow ideas from the WWE, but I'd really wish you'd come up with another name than Money in the Bank.. even though it's kinda cool.

What's more than cool is Punk and Daniels in Hell in a Cell!!

I wonder if that's how the Super Cade card's gonna look like. If Brock and Kurt's gonna go at it an hour, it might not be any more matches.
Snabbit888Posted on 05/08/08 at 21:56:19

I'll heavily borrow you, jerk! :)

Money in the Bank is just the perfect name.  It works, and I think it'd look sillier if I did the match but named it something or other.

Super Cade works as a 4-hour PPV similar to Mania, so there will be a couple more matches.

As for Cade, the plan was always for the HB Cade thing to be shortlived.

More Random Thoughts:

YAY MICK! And Dreamer/Booker at Super Cade, should be an interesting match. And Iron Man Match, holy shit, Super Cade is going to be an epic night.

Sharky does the jobski, expected result there.

MNM retain the belts, nothing much to add there, other than Kazarian getting pinned made me pleased.

Hell in a Cell, damn that should end Punk and Daniels for sure.

Cade and Skipper, as a byproduct of the Booker/Dreamer feud, was good and Elix got himself pinned.

JBL gains his revenge! Go, Layfield, beat him! And Lashley gets a shot at the Intercontinental Title at Super Cade. I have a very bad feeling about this match. :(

Even the combined efforts of Styles and Benoit weren't enough to put down Umaga.

Rhyno Gores Abyss, damn those referees for causing a distraction by holding Matt back. Edge, you can run, but you can't hide, soon you'll going to pay for all your crimes.

Money in the Bank, Iron Man Match, and Hell in a Cell all in one night? Wow, that's going to be epic, if dangerously close to overkill, but if there's good matches, no one's going to bitch, except for the geeks on the Internet. :)

Sports Entertainment chaos in the main event, as Lesnar and Dreamer respectively cause chaos to build the heat for their respective matches. Chaos I tell you, as next week is hyped up.

Good show once again.

How about "Feast or Fired". In all seriousness, I KNEW you'd do MitB eventually, I probably should have seen it coming on the last show I replied to when I was bemoaning Orton not having anything to do... and yes, I know I only did that a few seconds ago, but I haven't had the chance to sit down and spend a bulk of time reading, so I'm doing it now whilst watching the Cup Final. That said, I'm sure you'll make the match work just fine, then I can spend a year hopelessly guessing when you'll actually pull the trigger on the title shot. That's always fun.

On a side note, I've always held off from doing the gimmick myself, but maybe in a years worth of cards time...

Mick Foley, I probably should have seen this coming (since you heavily borrow from the WWE  :P ) but he'll do nicely. And the inevitable Dreamer/Booker match is made. No surprises there but that's not a bad thing here.

Matt has a point about the number of gimmick matches (it's almost a bit One-Night-Standy) but the occassion makes it alright. The Iron Man Match has the potential to be epic but I'm relying on you to write something special. Hell in a Cell meanwhile... I'm surprised Daniels and Punk are going down that road considering they're not main eventers yet, unless the intention is to make the X-Division that big.

That main event was very ECW-ish in the way it broke down with everyone interfering.

Super Cade needs Lance Cade.

Also, I'll give a shout to Umaga and Lashley for their dominant wins, especially Umaga. Hmmm, Umaga could be a MitB contender. I guess it's going to be Orton, Brown and four others who aren't yet doing anything. I'll call Umaga, Rey, maybe Benoit and Styles too. But we'll see.
