[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/22/06

Snabbit888Posted on 05/07/08 at 09:32:41

Mayhem is in the books, and the next stop is Super Cade, the biggest pay-per-view event of the year! Ann Arbor, Michigan was rocking for tonight's edition of Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, the undefeated Umaga will be in action taking on AJ Styles! Gregory Helms defends his newly won X Title against the former champion, CM Punk! Matt Hardy makes his return to GCW when he takes on Rhyno! And tonight, in the middle of the ring, there will be a huge confrontation between Kurt Angle and World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar!

Match #1
Abyss/Rob Van Dam (w/ Maria) vs. Edge/Christian (w/ Lita/Mickie James/Gail Kim)
Our opening match was a rematch from Mayhem with Abyss & Rob Van Dam taking on Edge & Christian. The victory by Abyss & Rob Van Dam is what allowed Matt Hardy to be reinstated into GCW. We are still not 100% sure why Abyss & RVD have been helping Hardy, but they have proven to be quite the formidable squadron. Edge & Christian came in with the plan to keep Abyss out of the ring as much as possible, and they were able to use that strategy quite effectively here. When Abyss was in the ring, he dominated the match. However, Edge & Christian lucked out in that RVD crashed and burned pretty hard when he missed the Five Star Frog Splash. Not long after that, Edge nailed RVD with the Spear. Abyss jumped in to make the save, but Christian sacrificed his body to get between Abyss and the pinfall to prevent that from happening.

Edge and Christian defeated Abyss and Rob Van Dam when Edge pinned RVD with the Spear in 0:13:57.
Rating: **** ½

A fantastic match to kick off the show tonight, and Edge & Christian pick up a bit of revenge after winning this contest. Problem for Edge is that sooner or later, he's going to have to go face-to-face with Matt Hardy eventually.

TOMMY DREAMER SPEAKS ABOUT HIS ACTIONS
Tommy Dreamer came out for an interview next. Dreamer announced that because of what happened last night at Mayhem, he was stepping down as the commissioner of Global Championship Wrestling. Dreamer said that he was sorry for what he did as he let his emotions get the better of him. "I regret my decision, and it's best that I do the right thing and step away from my duties as commissioner of GCW." At this point, BOOKER T, ELIX SKIPPER, and SHARMELL made their way to the ring with big smiles on their faces. Booker once again railed on Dreamer for being a racist and told him that he was lucky that he was stepping down, because he and Skipper would have beat his ass. They continued to run Dreamer down until he had heard enough, nailing Booker with a hard right hand that knocked him to the canvas! Dreamer fired away a few punches before Skipper cut him off with a hard kick to the head. Booker & Skipper put the boots to Dreamer until H.B. CADE ran to the ring and blasted Skipper with a huge lariat! Booker went for a clothesline of his own, but Cade ducked and hit an inverted atomic drop before bouncing off the ropes and nearly decapitating Booker with a lariat! We later found out that he is now going by his real name, Lance Cade. Booker bloodied Cade up a few weeks ago and it's obvious that he was getting some revenge. Cade helped Dreamer up to his feet as Booker & Skipper retreated to the back.

Match #2
AJ Styles vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
AJ Styles is looking to push himself to the next level, and he has done so with some recent victories over Randy Orton. Styles took it a step further here and actually challenged the Samoan Bulldozer Umaga. Umaga has been on an absolute tear since he debuted at Deadly Draw, even dismantling former World champion Chris Benoit at Mayhem. Styles showed no fear of Umaga by going right at him. But unfortunately just being brave doesn't seem to be enough against Umaga. Umaga looked to be on the way to another win when CHRIS BENOIT ran to the ring and smacked Umaga in the head with a Singapore cane causing a disqualification!

Umaga defeated AJ Styles by disqualification in 0:03:37.
Rating: **

The Crippler hit Umaga with a couple more shots but they only angered Umaga who turned and dropped Benoit with a Samoan drop. At Armando Alejandro Estrada's urging, Umaga put Benoit in the corner, went to the opposite side of the ring, and charged in, smashing Benoit's head into the middle turnbuckle. Styles was getting back to his feet at this point, but it was unfortunate for him as he was dropped with the Samoan Spike. Can anybody slow down the Samoan Bulldozer?

Match #3
The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
Charlie Haas has been very vocal about his desire to be a tag team champion for a 6th time, even if partner Shelton Benjamin hasn't been showing the same kind of enthusiasm. Either way, the World's Greatest Tag Team will have that opportunity when they face MNM at Super Cade III. Tonight though they had to get past a team that upset them a week ago, Kid Kash & Lance Hoyt. Haas has really turned it up in recent weeks and there was no better show of it than in this match. Haas took full control of the match late, eventually locking Kash in the Haas of Pain to earn the submission victory.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt when C. Haas made Kash submit to the Haas Of Pain in 0:06:23.
Rating: **** 1/4

Haas was again super pumped up about the victory, hopping around like he just hit a game-winning homerun. Benjamin was a bit more subdued as it was more business as usual for him. Regardless, I wouldn't bet against the WGTT at Super Cade.

PAUL BURCHILL ISN'T DONE WITH MONTY BROWN
We cut back to an interview with Paul Burchill, who suffered a tough loss to Monty Brown last night at Mayhem. Burchill didn't seem detoured by his coming up short in the match, telling Brown it took everything he had to just barely get past the superstar from England. Burchill let Brown know that he still can't win the big one and that if he thought he was done with him, he had another thing coming.

Match #4
Matt Hardy (w/ Maria) vs. Rhyno
The much anticipated in-ring return of Matt Hardy was our next match as he took on the man who tried to interfere in the tag match at Mayhem to prevent this from happening, Rhyno. Many were disappointed that Rhyno would help out Edge & Christian the way that he did, but the Manbeast has a long history with Edge & Christian, not to mention that he has made it abundantly clear in the past that he will do anything as long as the price is right. Rhyno must be getting paid a lot of money by Edge & Christian because he was trying to break Hardy in half this entire match. Hardy looked a bit rusty, which is understandable after being out for so long. Hardy is running on pure adrenaline though as he was pumped to be back in the ring. Hardy took a beating from the Manbeast, but the Twist of Fate put this one in the books.

Matt Hardy pinned Rhyno with the Twist of Fate in 0:10:56.
Rating: ***

Impressive return for Matt Hardy by getting a win over Rhyno. It's good to see Hardy back, and one has to believe he is on a crash course with Edge.

Match #5
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Randy Orton
Randy Orton finally got himself on the winning track again by defeating AJ Styles, but it was by no means a dominating victory. It did prove that the RKO is a devastating move that the third generation superstar can pull out of nowhere. Orton was facing a similar opponent tonight in the form of Rey Mysterio Jr., who has his eyes set on the X Title currently held by Gregory Helms. Much like last night, Orton had trouble adjusting to how fast Mysterio is. Mysterio is arguably the greatest flier of the last 50 years, so it's not at all surprising that someone would have trouble dealing with that. However Orton once again proved how sudden the RKO is. Mysterio looked primed to hit Orton with the West Coast Pop after stunning him with the 6-1-9, but Orton had the presence of mind to catch Mysterio in the RKO out of the springboard attempt, completely wiping him out and making the 3 count academic.

Randy Orton pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the RKO in 0:06:47.
Rating: **** 1/4

Randy Orton once again pulls out a win by the skin of his teeth. But what is next for the third generation superstar? As for Rey Mysterio Jr., this was a setback, but he still has his eyes set on the X Title and Gregory Helms.

JBL PUSHES LASHLEY TOO FAR
The sound of the opening stock bells signified the entrance of Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield, alongside his limo driver Lamont and Bobby Lashley. JBL & Lashley were on the losing end of the main event to Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle at Mayhem thanks in part to an errant spear from Lashley that caught JBL instead. The point of this interview was simple, and that was for JBL to publicly berate Lashley for the loss. In JBL's eyes, the loss was entirely Lashley's fault, and he wanted to embarrass him for it and put him in his place. JBL has been loose of tongue around Lashley in recent weeks and we have seen a new fire lit under Lashley, but tonight, JBL went too far. JBL got angry when Lashley wouldn't look at him and made a huge mistake by slapping him right across the face! The look of sheer anger in Lashley's eyes was one of the most intense looks I have ever seen. Lashley snapped and grabbed JBL by the throat with bad intentions. Lamont tried his best to save his boss by hitting a weak forearm to Lashley's back, but all that did was get Lashley to let go of JBL and nail Lamont with a hard right hand that sent him flying to the floor. JBL took this opening to crack Lashley in the back of the head with the Intercontinental Title, stunning the undefeated superstar. JBL hit the ropes looking for the Stock Market Crash, but Lashley ducked, hit the far ropes, and split JBL in half with a spear - this one definitely intentional! The crowd was cheering wildly as Lashley lifted JBL onto his shoulder and drilled him into the canvas with the Dominator! It looks like Lashley is on his own now, and JBL may live to regret the day he pissed this guy off.

Match #6
X Title Match
Gregory Helms © vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
Our final wrestling match of the evening was the first X Title defense of Gregory Helms, defending against the former champion CM Punk in a one-on-one contest. Punk was looking to make Helms' title reign nothing more than a cup of coffee, and he has the skill set to make that happen. One had to wonder if and when Christopher Daniels was going to get involved, and during the match, he did an insert promo saying that there is nothing that CM Punk could possibly do to convince him that he has changed his ways. "I know you too well and know this is how you manipulate people." Daniels said he had no regrets in costing Punk the X Title last night, as well as having no regrets about blasting Helms with the chair as well. The match itself was a great one between two of the men that are certainly the future of this business. The tide of this match would turn late in the contest when it looked like Punk had a clear edge on winning this match, countering a charging Helms on the floor with a flapjack that caused Helms to smash his face on the ringsteps. Punk threw Helms back in the ring, but before he could get in the ring himself, CHRISTOPHER DANIELS was down at ringside and shoved him shoulder first hard into the ringpost! The Fallen Angel threw Punk back in the ring and a groggy Helms quickly capitalized by putting Punk in a short arm scissors. Punk tried desperately to get to the ropes but the pain was simply too much for him and he was forced to submit.

Gregory Helms made CM Punk submit to a short arm scissors in 0:17:00.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Gregory Helms retained the GCW X Title.)

After the match, Daniels jumped in the ring and put the boots to Punk. Daniels seemed to be oblivious to the fact that Helms was still in the ring, which caused him to not notice Helms setting him up. Daniels was busy punching away at Punk's face which let Helms nearly take his head off with the Shining Wizard. Helms suddenly got an idea and grabbed a chair from ringside, wanting to return the favor to Daniels from last night when Daniels paintbrushed him with it. Helms held the chair above his head to bring it down on Daniels, but he was shocked when CM Punk put himself in front of the Fallen Angel in an effort to protect him! Helms couldn't believe that Punk would put himself in harm's way like that, especially for Daniels. After a brief pause, Helms decided he didn't care and smashed Punk between the eyes with the chair! Punk was out cold, but Helms left without any further harm to Daniels which is what Punk wanted. I have to say I am shocked that Punk would sacrifice his body for Daniels like that, especially after it was Daniels who cost him this match.

BROCK LESNAR & KURT ANGLE MEET FACE-TO-FACE
Our final segment of the night was a face-to-face confrontation between World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and the #1 contender to that very title, Kurt Angle. We had thought these two were great friends, but the past few weeks have shown that when the biggest prize in the game is involved, all of that can go out the window. Highlights were shown from last week when Lesnar hit Angle with a chair, followed by a clip of Angle hitting the Angle Slam on Lesnar after the match at Mayhem. The problem was originally, Tommy Dreamer was to facilitate to confrontation so it didn't become a physical event. Now that Dreamer has been relieved of his duties as GCW Commissioner, it was only Lesnar and Angle out there. Neither man said a word. But it didn't take long before the two came to blows, hitting each other with right hands! Angle eventually caught Lesnar with a double leg takedown and fired away with right hands again. Lesnar turned the tide and fired back with right hands of his own before the GCW Official Brigade and half of the midcard wrestlers were out to keep these two at bay. Any friendship these two had is definitely out the window now. The show went off the air with everyone trying their best to keep Lesnar and Angle from tearing each other apart.

Next week on Explosion, we have learned that we will be introduced to the brand new commissioner of Global Championship Wrestling! Also, Chris Benoit, AJ Styles, and Umaga meet in a Triple Threat match, and much much more!

Updated card for Super Cade III, June 25, 2006, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Random Thoughts and Stuff:

Edge and Christian get back their loss from last night but the damage may be already done for Edge is Matt Hardy is back and looking for Edge.

Dreamer resigns but as a going away present gets beaten by Elix Skipper and Booker T. Cade makes the save, that's a bit surprising. You know Cade/Dreamer against Booker/Skipper might bit a bit of an odd, but fun tag team match.

Umaga is introduced with to a singapore cane at the hands of Benoit. Of course, we know the number one rule in wrestling, don't hit a Samoan in the head and this only serves to anger Umaga who lays waste to Benoit. Umaga's gotten over as an unstoppable monster since he's showed up, good job for that.

WGTT win a token tag team match but Haas is more happy with this then Shelton. Benjamin/Haas will be a fun little feud, when you pull the trigger on the break up gets pulled, but I think Benjamin's destined for big things in the singles ranks.

Burchill's not down with Monty Brown. I smell another Pounce coming his way.

Damn, Matt returns with a bang, that's huge, a victory over Rhino and shows that he's more than capable to take down Edge.

Sweet finish to Orton and Rey, as Orton seems to beginning to get his head back on after his recent slump

Lashley beats up JBL. Damn that bully, taking down a real american hero like John Bradshaw Layfield. The fans might be cheering ol' Blaster Lashley, but we all know who the true hero is in this feud. :)

Helms shows his ring smarts by going right after the arm. Punk/Daniels continues their war but the one that really benefits from this war is Gregory Helm. And Punk sacrifices himself for Daniels. Classic old school babyface move.

Damn fine brawl as it's established that the hatred is back in full force between Lesnar/Angle. I'm pulling for Lesnar but it should be a slobberknocker nevertheless.

New Commissioner next week? I wonder who could it be.

Good show, and I'm onto the next one.

OK, where were we...

Are we going to find out the motivation for Abyss and RVD at some point? Edge and Christian get the deserved win here meantime.

Dreamer steps down and a new commissioner gets announced. I'm assuming this means Dreamer becomes a member of the roster again and a showdown with Booker T awaits. Meanwhile, who can fill Dreamers shoes? I'm thinking Mike Adamle...

I'm still thinking TWGTT will split in a losing effort at Super Cade, the time is such. Not sure who's supposed to be the heel yet though.

Orton's winning again but needs a direction, especially going into Super Cade. Not sure who's available for him to face actually. Lesnar and Angle are tied up, JBL and Lashley are too (the inevitable break up happening in the next segment... Lamont trying to rescue JBL is pretty funny), Hardy and Edge too.

The whole Punk and Daniels thing is pretty confusing thus far but I'm sure you'll explain all in due course. Helms seems pretty fixed in the equation now as well

Maybe Dreamer should have waited a couple of hours before quitting as Lesnar and Angle blew up. This is the big one though, no question about it, and the build is going quite nicely at this juncture.
