[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/15/06

Snabbit888Posted on 04/22/08 at 01:58:22

Six days away from Mayhem and we were live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Monday Night Explosion! This close to Mayhem, a lot could change based on the huge card we had tonight! Brock Lesnar would wrestle Elix Skipper in a non-title match, The World's Greatest Tag Team take on Kid Kash & Lance Hoyt, CM Punk & Rey Mysterio Jr. take on Christopher Daniels & Gregory Helms, and in the main event, Kurt Angle meets the undefeated beast Bobby Lashley!

Match #1
Non-Title Match
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion) vs. Elix Skipper
Elix Skipper got lippy to Tommy Dreamer a week ago, and thus Dreamer granted him a non-title match against World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Skipper held his own as best as he could, but this match was obviously a punishment to Prime Time. The result of this match was never in question as Lesnar took the win with the F-5.

Brock Lesnar pinned Elix Skipper with the F-5 in 0:08:05.
Rating: ****

CHRISTIAN QUESTIONS EDGE ON HIS DECISION
Backstage, Christian questioned Edge about his decision to have the two of them wrestle Abyss and Rob Van Dam with Matt Hardy's reinstatement on the line. Edge said he was put in a bad position and had no choice, but that Christian shouldn't worry because he had a plan.

Match #2
Abyss/Rob Van Dam (w/ Maria) vs. The Blue World Order
We still are not exactly sure why Abyss and Rob Van Dam have decided to join forces to help out Matt Hardy, but never the less, they appear to make a great combination if their domination of The Blue World Order tonight is any indication. They destroyed the bWo so much that The Blue Meanie used to run away for the countout rather than contend with Abyss anymore.

Abyss and Rob Van Dam defeated The bWo (The Blue Meanie and Stevie Richards) when Abyss defeated Meanie by countout in 0:01:57.
Rating: ** ¾

EDGE and CHRISTIAN tried to come from out of the crowd to get the jump on Abyss and Rob Van Dam, both nailing Abyss in the back with a chair. All this did was anger the Monster, who turned around and punched one of the chairs right back into Christian's face! Edge was then met with the Van Daminator from RVD, knocking both men from the ring. If this was Edge's plan, he may need to reconsider his strategy before Mayhem.

Match #3
Frankie Kazarian vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
This week's sacrificial lamb for Umaga was Frankie "The Future" Kazarian. Umaga takes on Kazarian's mentor Chris Benoit this Sunday and wanted to help his mentor out by softening the Samoan Bulldozer up. Problem is, when you have a name like the Samoan Bulldozer, you're not exactly easy to be softened up. Umaga had little to no trouble decimating Kazarian, putting him down with the Samoan Spike.

Umaga pinned Frankie Kazarian with the Samoan Spike in 0:02:49.
Rating: ** 1/4

Chris Benoit is a former World champion, but he is going to need all of that skill and a lot of luck if he is going to get past Umaga.

Match #4
The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
This next match involved two of the teams that will be competing for a shot at the World Tag Team Titles. Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt are a newer team but have a long history together, but they had their work cut out against the 5-time World Tag Team champions, the World's Greatest Tag Team. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin are dead set on getting the titles back (Haas at least) and he was maybe a little too overzealous tonight. Haas was so concerned with winning this match that he tried too hard and got distracted, which led to Benjamin getting caught off-guard by a small package from Kash and a pull of the tights.

Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Kash pinned S. Benjamin after a small package in 0:09:11.
Rating: ****

This could be a bad omen for the WGTT as they don't make many mistakes, but this was definitely a mistake. Haas tried to apologize but again, Benjamin was having none of it. Things eventually got smoothed over, but they're going to need to get on the same page if they want to get that World Tag Team Title at Super Cade.

JBL GIVES LASHLEY A "PEP TALK"
In preparation for tonight's main event, Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield was with his hired muscle Bobby Lashley. JBL was very intense and to be truthful, very condescending as he spoke to Lashley, telling him that if he was worth anything, he would make sure that Kurt Angle doesn't even make it to Mayhem. For the first time, we heard Lashley speak as he fired back at JBL, saying that he didn't need any kind of pep talk. "I will break Kurt Angle, and at Mayhem... just stay out of the way." Lashley left pissed, but JBL smiled knowing that his talk had worked.

Match #5
Chris Benoit vs. Paul Burchill
Chris Benoit has the daunting task of facing Umaga at Mayhem, and has been on the receiving end of a few beatings from the Samoan Bulldozer leading up to this Sunday. Benoit wanted to release a bit of frustration against young Paul Burchill, the upstart out of England. Burchill has been a personal thorn in the side of Monty Brown, but he seemed completely focused on beating Benoit here, knowing that a victory over the former World Heavyweight champion would skyrocket him up the rankings. Both men are very aggressive animals in the ring and this one was no exception. With how relatively new Burchill is, he continues to surprise a lot of people with what he can get done in the ring, almost defeating Benoit here, but he got caught in the Crippler Crossface and that's just not a move you get out of. Benoit wins by submission, but Burchill has absolutely nothing to be ashamed about.

Chris Benoit made Paul Burchill submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:09:36.
Rating: ***

AJ STYLES IS ANXIOUS TO PROVE THAT HE BELONGS
We had a backstage interview with "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles who spoke about his upcoming match with Randy Orton at Mayhem. Styles said that he was tired of being overlooked and this was his opportunity to prove that he deserved to run with the big dogs. He went on to say that a lot of people have said that the previous two wins he's had over Orton were flukes, but at Mayhem, he was going to prove once and for all that they were no flukes and that the Phenomenal One is here to stay. At this point he was blindsided by RANDY ORTON, who nailed him with a elbow to the head and tossed him face first into the cement wall, busting him wide open. We've learned that Styles will be okay and will still make it to Mayhem, but he's going to be a little worse for wear.

Match #6
CM Punk (X champion)/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Daffney) vs. Gregory Helms/Christopher Daniels
Neither of these teams really had any desire to work together as CM Punk, Rey Mysterio Jr., Gregory Helms, and Christopher Daniels meet in a Fatal Fourway for the X Title. Daniels particularly had a difficult time as though he obviously isn't on the same page with either Punk or Mysterio, he certainly didn't want to be teaming with Helms either. This match would be determined by which team could coexist the best, and that ended up being Punk and Mysterio, who have helped each other in recent weeks. Daniels ended up getting stuck in the ring late, and Helms had little to no concern over what happened to him, allowing Mysterio to get the win with the West Coast Pop.

CM Punk and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Christopher Daniels and Gregory Helms when Mysterio Jr. pinned C. Daniels with the West Coast Pop in 0:10:30.
Rating: *** ¾

A good momentum builder for Mysterio, because if he is to pick up the pinfall at Mayhem, no matter who he pins he will be the X champion. Helms would get the last laugh tonight though as he grabbed the X Title and knocked out Mysterio, Punk, and even his partner Daniels, before standing tall with the X Title over his head. Could this be a sign of things to come at Mayhem?

MONTY BROWN HAS SOME WORDS FOR PAUL BURCHILL
The ever-intense Monty Brown had a few words for Paul Burchill, his opponent this Sunday. Brown made mention of Burchill's recent claims that Brown can't win the big one. Brown was intense, saying that he may have recently lost his way, but he will get right back on track after he makes Burchill feel the Pounce... PERIOD.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Kurt Angle (w/ Brock Lesnar) vs. Bobby Lashley (w/ John Bradshaw Layfield & Lamont)
This could be the biggest main event we've had on Explosion as the former World champion Kurt Angle took on the undefeated beast that is Bobby Lashley. No one has been able to get even close to defeating Lashley by a pinfall or submission thus far, but if anyone was going to do it, it was Angle. Not only is Lashley a monster, but he is also a highly accomplished mat wrestler, and it shocked a lot of people that he seemed to be outwrestling the former Olympic champion. Angle fought back though and put Lashley through the wringer, giving him a far tougher match than any other competitor has been able to thus far. The crowd was hot for the entire match, wanting to see Angle be the first man to put an L on Lashley's record.

The tide would turn when Angle would get Lashley down with the Angle Slam, but unfortunately Lashley's leg caught referee Nick Patrick in the face, knocking him out cold. JBL, who had been at ringside, took this opportunity to slide in the ring with a chair. JBL had intentions of destroying Angle's skull, but Lesnar intervened by spearing JBL. Lesnar picked up the chair and went to blast Lashley with it while the referee was still down, but he miscalculated and the chair smacked Angle between the eyes instead! Lesnar was pissed at himself, but as Nick Patrick was stirring, he had to get out of the ring so he wasn't caught. Lashley followed up by hitting angle with a torture rack drop and this one was over.

Bobby Lashley pinned Kurt Angle after the torture rack drop in 0:09:31.
Rating: ** ½

After the match, a groggy Angle got into a bit of a shouting match with Brock Lesnar, even accusing Lesnar of nailing him on purpose! Cooler heads prevailed, but this can't look good for the World Heavyweight champion and the #1 contender.

Things are starting to flare between Lesnar and Angle, just as anticipated. Besides, you managed to keep Lashley's win streak intact without taking away anything from Angle.

Predictions:

Styles
Umaga
Rhyno
Kash/Hoyt
Brown
Punk
Abyss/RVD
JBL/Lashley

Poor poor Elix Skipper...

Yeah, I've been questioning that myself, not just with GCW, but with that sort of logic in general.  Why would Edge even give him a chance to get back in?  I'm guessing there's more to it.

Well that plan backfired on them.  I love how you're able to use Abyss so well despite him not being as animated a character as so many others.

Another Umaga squash... Benoit's obviously not going to win this one.  Looks to be getting phased out of the picture...

WGTT dissension!!!  It might be about time.  They've done all they can in the tag ranks, though I wouldn't rule out a reconciliation later.

I LOVED that bit with Lashley.  That was intense even for such a short promo... well done.

Nice match for Burchill.  You seem to be high on the guy, though Brown's going to run him over.  He may have a nice showing at Mayhem though.

I'm digging the X title scene, though it's a bit chaotic at times.  The characters are there though, and the Punk/Daniels dynamic has been thoroughly interesting.  Kind of surprised it was Helms going berzerk and not Daniels...

Greeeat win for Lashley... I have to admit, I love the way you're building him.  He's got huge potential to be a star in GCW.  And obviously the rift had to begin tonight, meaning the Mayhem main event should be the breaking point.  Should be good!

Predictions!
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (Intercontinental champion)/Bobby Lashley

If Abyss/RVD win, Matt Hardy is reinstated - Abyss & Rob Van Dam vs. Edge & Christian

X Title Match - CM Punk © vs. Gregory Helms vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Christopher Daniels

Looking forward to most of the card of Mayhem, though the Dykstra/Rhyno match seems to have been lost in the shuffle.

Hi. So I've gotten reading again. That TNM itch does tend to get you eventually, doesn't it. After spending the last hour catching up with everything I've missed, I'll first run down various thoughts and whatnot.

So, ummmm, Benoit is still here. I'd assume most people have dropped him (I say that - yours is the first I've read today) but here he is, still plugging away. I know he's got another year on him before he officially... dies, but it's interesting to see how you're going to use him from here on.

I LOVE how you've gotten very specific about Kenny Dykstras name right down to the "teen phenom" bit... even though Dykstra would have been 20 by this point. :P Gotta love it when someone misses little things like that.

WHITE HART LANE!!! AHFBCCBBVCI! I love you Snabbs.

The single greatest line in any sort of literature, anyway, EVER - better than "Call me Ishmael", better than "God createted the heavens and the earth", better than "where forth art thou Romeo" has to be, without a doubt - "Chum is not a fire-able offence". Unbelievable. So touching, so moving, so able to speak volumes on so many emotional and psychological levels.

I KNEW something was up with the HBK stuff when I realised you weren't refering to Michaels by name. I assume HB Cade and Super Cade are made for each other. New world champion.

BLUE WORLD ORDER! Enough said.

Lance Storms celebration party for winning "Best of the best" was the stuff of legend.

What happened to Doug Williams? Again?

Oh Deadly Draw, here's the one thing I'll criticise you about - the Rumble matches in TNM if left to its own devices tend to be incredibly lopped sided, with most of the match being just two or three guys in there, and at the very end you'll finally get some people in there. The Rumble you did read like that's what happened, and I reckon if you actually plotted it out and edited the results afterwards, you could come up with something epic, even though you did your best to cover up the fact that Stevie Richards and D-Ray 3000 were the dominant forces in there.

So anyway...

(if I think of anything else, I'll make a timely edit)

FINAL Card for Mayhem, May 21, 2006, from Detroit, MI:

Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (Intercontinental champion)/Bobby Lashley

So tough to call as either team losing sets up Super Cade nicely, but we'll go for Lesnar/Angle here to build them as the best two in the promotion at the right time.

If Abyss/RVD win, Matt Hardy is reinstated - Abyss & Rob Van Dam vs. Edge & Christian

The obvious choice is Abyss and RVD... too obvious. I'm going for E&C to win here, THEN lose the rematch in a week or so, allowing Hardy to come back in time for the big one.

X Title Match - CM Punk © vs. Gregory Helms vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Christopher Daniels

Punk's just won it and asides from the tag team title deal where it was pinging around in consecutive weeks, you have a tendancy for long title reigns (Monty Brown anyone...).

Monty Brown vs. Paul Burchill

Burchill is getting a decent push, but I've got to go with Brown who gets momentum headed to Super Cade.

Fatal Fourway - The Bulldogs vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt vs. The Blue World Order

I know, I know, but WGTT are destined to break up and though it's a toss up between them breaking up before Super Cade and going one-on-one then or winning this and having the break up after their failed title shot, I'm going for the former. So what the hell, we'll go for the underdogs.

Rhyno vs. Kenny Dykstra

I think you forgot about this one.

Chris Benoit vs. Umaga

That's a no-brainer... I think. Umaga needs a big win to really get the ball rolling.

AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton

Orton needs it more right now, funnily enough. Besides, Styles has two wins already. That said, I might have to check if May 2006 was one of the time Orton got suspended in real life, because this would explain his losing run.
Snabbit888Posted on 04/23/08 at 01:14:23

91:

Yay!

yes, Kenny would be 20 by this point, but he's still a young ass dude, and it's one of those things where soon enough, I won't really be referring to him as the Teen Phenom anyway.

Benoit is still here.  I am doing my best to continue booking him as if nothing is going to happen.  Unfortunately, we all know that in June '07, he'll be gone.  I want to keep realism going here.  In May '06, nobody would have even remotely guessed that would have happened, so I'm booking him like normal.  I'm not cancelling any planned title reigns or depushing him mightily.  I'll book him normally and then in June, boom, he'll be gone.

I just really didn't have anything for Doug Williams I was happy with, so I released him.

The Rumble match did kinda suck this year, but it happens.  I didn't have it in me to really give it a super edit to make it great.  I'll just chalk it up to, "Hey, sometimes the Rumble match sucks!" and move on (1993, 2008 WWE anyone?)

And I didn't forget about Rhyno/Dykstra.  Part of Dykstra's punishment from Dreamer was that he had to wrestle Rhyno at Mayhem and that he was to stay home until then, since that's his "first" singles match again.
91Posted on 04/23/08 at 01:23:01

What was wrong with the 2008 Rumble? Might not have been the best one but it was a decent effort. And 1993 was very lacklustre but there have been worse. 1995, 1999 and 2002 stand out as the bad ones for me.

Oh yeah, and re Rhyno/Dykstra, I would have just chucked out a mention here and there, for example when Rhyno had a match. But I'm just a nitpicking Brit. :(
SolomattGrundyPosted on 04/23/08 at 01:59:12

Woot! The Go Home Show!

Elix gets smashed, logical outcome for this match. If you need a guy to throw around a cruiserweight for an entertaining match, call Brock Lesnar.

Edge has a plan. I smell a job in their future.

The tag match goes well over of putting over Abyss as a monster, as the BWO decide to run away, live to job another day. Edge and Christian attempt to attack Abyss and Mr. VD, but this doesn't work all that well.

Okay, that match was the best match ever. YOU-MAN-GA dominates, as he should and Kazarian jobs to the bigger man.

The WGTT do the old jobski, by nefarious means by that dastardly Kid Kash. Dissension in the ranks of the WGTT. They should stay away from barber shop windows.

I predict a non decisive finish for the main event tonight.

Benoit gets the win in the nice mid card match as a tuneup for his match against YOU-MAN-GA. As good as his performance was, I think Burchill is a bit easier to put down than YOu-MAN-GA. I predict a slaughter for Mr. Benoit at the Pay Per View.

Orton attacks Styles from behind, as obviously the previous losses. For his own sake, Randy has to turn it around with a victory.

Great tag team match, as Rey wins. I don't think we'll see a title change, as Punk just won the title last month, but stranger things have happened.

POUNCE. PERIOD! Burchill's going to die.

Blaster Lashley wins, thanks to a miscalculation for Lesnar. What kind of medical plan does GCW have anyway? It's obvious the man needs glasses :) Angle and Lesnar are not getting along, which considering the fact they are going to wrestle for the title at SuperCade, they might not have been getting along for too much longer anyway.

Quick Picks:

JBL pins Lesnar in the main event after Angle accidentally hits Lesnar, leading to a big brawl.

Abyss and Van Dam win.

Punk retains the title.

Burchill tastes the Pounce...Period.

The Bulldogs are the number one contenders. The WGTT split up.

YAY KENNY~! eats the Gore and Rhino wins.

YOU-MAN-GA triumphs over the Canadian Crippler.

Orton loses again and loses his mind as well. Perhaps a disqualification finish, but now I'm leaning towards a clean pin.
