[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/1/06

Snabbit888Posted on 04/09/08 at 00:17:36

Welcome to West Lafayette, Indiana, the home of the Purdue Boilermakers, and welcome to Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, we know that Commissioner Tommy Dreamer has a couple of huge announcements that will impact not only Mayhem, the May 21st pay-per-view, but also will impact Super Cade III! Not only that, but we will see some great wrestling as AJ Styles and Randy Orton meet once more, Monty Brown gets another crack at John Bradshaw Layfield and the Intercontinental Title, CM Punk makes his first X Title defense against Kid Kash, and in our main event, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle team up to take on The World's Greatest Tag Team! This night is going to be huge!

TOMMY DREAMER MAKES HIS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioner Tommy Dreamer was already standing in the ring as we came on the air, and he was all business. The first announcement he made was in regards to the main event at Mayhem, which will take place on May 21st from Detroit, Michigan. He announced that due to the way the main event ended a week ago on Explosion, at Mayhem it will be a tag team main event with World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar teaming with the #1 contender for that same title Kurt Angle going up against Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield and his enforcer Bobby Lashley! What a gigantic main event that will be. That wasn't the only announcement as Dreamer also let everybody know that because of his actions a week ago, Booker T has been suspended without pay for 30 days. "Booker's actions were entirely unnecessary and out of line and he is being punished accordingly." Dreamer had one more piece of business to attend to as he called out Ken Doane, who turned on his partner Hardcore Holly last week and injured Holly's elbow with a chair, causing him to require surgery and putting him on the shelf for awhile. Doane came out and first corrected Dreamer, saying from now on he wanted to be referred to as "The Teen Phenom" Kenny Dykstra. Dreamer didn't seem much to care about the name change but was more interested in speaking about what happened last week. Dreamer said he had half a mind to suspend Dykstra as well, but decided to punish him in another fashion. "You don't want to wrestle in tag matches? You want to be a big singles star? Well at Mayhem, I'm going to give you that chance. You're going to be in a singles match... against RHYNO." Dykstra tried to talk his way out of it, but Dreamer said the match was signed, and that until Mayhem, he didn't want to see Dykstra's face anywhere near a GCW arena. Dreamer certainly laying down the law here in West Lafayette.

Match #1
AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
Our opening contest was a rematch of last week. AJ Styles scored what many people would consider an upset when he rolled up Randy Orton. Orton, not one to be outdone, challenged Styles to a rematch to show that lightning would not strike twice. Orton was aggressive from the opening bell and was putting a beating on the Phenomenal One, and just like last week, he started to get overconfident. That was evidenced when Orton had Styles in the corner and climbed the buckles to throw some punches, but he took his sweet time. This allowed Styles to surprise him with a headbutt to the midsection and planted him with the Styles Clash. I don't care who you are, if Styles can hit you with that devastating move, it'll put you out, and it put Orton out here tonight.

AJ Styles pinned Randy Orton with the Styles Clash in 0:05:17.
Rating: ****

For the second week in a row, AJ Styles has pinned Randy Orton, which can't sit well with the arrogant third-generation superstar. From the rumblings we hear backstage, Orton is not ready to let this one die just yet.

Match #2
Chris Benoit vs. Stevie Richards
Chris Benoit has been suffering from a bit of a slump recently, and it has been getting to him. It all came to a head when at Deadly Draw, Benoit gave a less-than-stellar performance, being eliminated from the match in less than two minutes by Stevie Richards of all people. He brutally attacked Richards after that which led to Dancin' Stevie's elimination as well. These two met in a singles match tonight, if you could call it that. It was more like a total ass-kicking on the part of Benoit. Richards didn't get more than a punch or two in before Benoit had him in the Crippler Crossface and a submission victory.

Chris Benoit made Stevie Richards submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:01:55.
Rating: ***

Benoit wasn't done proving his point though as he pulled back further on Stevie's neck. This brought out Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith who tried to talk some sense into their mentor, but he continued to wrench back even further. He didn't even stop when tribal beats began to play over the sound system and out came UMAGA, with Armando Alejandro Estrada, and Umaga didn't look like he was there to talk. Kazarian and Smith rushed at Umaga, but he leveled them both with a double clothesline. A huge headbutt on Kazarian sent him out of the ring, as did a vicious back kick that caught Smith under the jaw do the same to him. Umaga turned his attentions to Benoit by nailing him in the back of the head with a hard kick. Umaga followed with a Samoan drop and then placed Benoit in the corner. From the other side of the ring, Umaga charged at him and absolutely smashed Benoit's skull! I wouldn't be surprised if the Crippler had a concussion after that. Umaga finished the beatdown off by driving his thumb hard into the Rabid Wolverine's throat, a devastating move called the Samoan Spike. Estrada took his animal to a back, but the impact has been made.

Match #3
X Title Match
CM Punk © (w/ Daffney) vs. Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
CM Punk had a tough opponent for his first X Title defense as he took on the always surly Kid Kash. This was a great match and an excellent first test for Punk who has seen an increase in support from the live crowds in recent weeks as he tries to rebuild his image. Kash doesn't care one way or the other if Punk is reshaping his life. I don't think it would matter if it was Kash's grandma across the ring from him - he's just an unpleasant bastard. But tonight he was almost a bastard who was wearing gold. He took Punk to the very limit but was caught in a great reversal by Punk who got Kash in a Fujiwara armbar, which is terribly painful. He tried to fight it out but had no choice but to submit.

CM Punk made Kid Kash submit to a Fujiwara armbar in 0:12:17.
Rating: **** 1/4
(CM Punk retained the GCW X Title.)

Before Punk could even get back to his feet, GREGORY HELMS was in the ring and wiped him out with the Shining Wizard! Helms painted Punk with lefts and rights, trying to soften him up before their clash at Mayhem. The crowd was chanting for Christopher Daniels to come out, and the roof about came off the place when he sprinted down toward the ring! However, Daniels hesitated before getting in the ring, thought better of it, and left Punk to fend for himself. The crowd tore into the Fallen Angel with boos, but he was focused and completely blocked it out. Those boos became cheers again though when REY MYSTERIO JR. darted to the ring, first pausing to give Daniels the stink eye in the aisle, before jumping in the ring and nailing Helms with a dropkick to the back that put Helms in position for the 6-1-9, which Mysterio connected with. Helms took a powder and headed for higher ground as Mysterio checked on Punk, who was a bit shaken up but fine.

REY MYSTERIO JR. HAS A CHALLENGE FOR GREGORY HELMS
Mysterio grabbed the microphone before leaving and told Helms that if he thought he had forgotten about the beating he received from him a few weeks ago, he was dead wrong. Mysterio then took a jab at Christopher Daniels, saying, "I'm not a coward like Christopher Daniels; I deal with my problems head on, and right now Helms, you're my problem!" Mysterio finished by challenging Helms to a one-on-one match next week, and it has been signed and will take place on Monday Night Explosion!

MATT HARDY WANTS A SHOT AT EDGE, BUT EDGE ISN'T BUDGING
Edge (and his Brothel) and Christian were backstage being asked questions by Michael Cole and Paul Heyman. Heyman informed Edge that Matt Hardy has been going around to GCW live events and getting signatures from the fans in an effort to be reinstated. Edge's demeanor shifted to distain as he promised there would be no chance in hell that he would ever let that happen. "Matt Hardy can do all these little publicity stunts until he's blue in the face, but there is NOTHING that will get him to return to GCW. As part of the contract we signed for that match, the only way he can return is if I agree to it, and guess what? Not a chance in hell that's going to happen."

Match #4
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont) vs. Monty Brown
John Bradshaw Layfield has been defending his Intercontinental Title a lot since winning it in February, and he has been going up against great competition. He put the title on the line tonight against the man he narrowly defeated at Deadly Draw, Monty Brown. Brown has recently been running from the stigma that he can't win the big one, a stigma that has been amped up by the taunting of Paul Burchill. Brown had a chance to wipe that away if he could capture the IC Title for the second time. In the early going, it looked that that was a great possibility as he was one step ahead of the self-proclaimed Wrestling God. JBL fought back though in his not pretty but effective way, putting a hurt on the Alpha Male that most other wrestlers can't. Brown had the momentum late when PAUL BURCHILL came down to ringside and had a microphone with him, berating Brown and yelling about how he was going to choke again. Burchill made the mistake of getting on the apron to continue his taunting which was a little too close to the Alpha Male, who hit Burchill with the Pounce and sent him crashing into the guardrail! Brown took care of Burchill, but this lapse in concentration caused him to turn right into the Stock Market Crash from JBL, and once again, Brown fell just short.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Monty Brown with the Stock Market Crash in 0:08:09.
Rating: ** 1/4
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

With yet another close-but-no-cigar night for Monty Brown, one has to wonder what it's going to take him to get over that hump. He's going to have a chance to get a measure of revenge though against Paul Burchill as those two have been signed to wrestle one-on-one at Mayhem.

Match #5
Abyss (w/ Maria) vs. Christian (w/ Edge, Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
Edge and Christian may be confident that Matt Hardy isn't going to be bothering them anymore, but they had a whole other list of problems tonight as Christian went one-on-one with Abyss. To make matters worse, Abyss was accompanied by Matt Hardy's girlfriend Maria! Edge and Christian are formidable as a tag team and very good singles wrestlers, but Abyss is a monster, and when he's motivated, he's a monster that's hard to slow down. Christian tried by grabbing Abyss' chain while Edge had the ref distracted and took a swing, but Abyss blocked it, grabbed the chain, and decked Christian with it. Needless to say, that was all she wrote.

Abyss pinned Christian after hitting him with a foreign object in 0:04:45.
Rating: ** ¾

Edge got in the ring and attacked the Monster, but Abyss fought him off. The numbers eventually got to Abyss though when Christian chopblocked him. Edge and Christian each grabbed chairs and had Abyss set up for the Conchairto, but that was thwarted by ROB VAN DAM who ran in and hit the Van Daminator knocking the chair right back into Edge's face. Christian took a swing at RVD, but the Whole F'n Show ducked and gave him a Van Daminator as well. Abyss, Van Dam, and Maria all stood in the ring as we went to commercial.

MNM SET UP A MATCH FOR MAYHEM
When we returned from break, the World Tag Team champions MNM gave an interview. MNM said that it had been a long hard road to get their proper shot, but they got it and are now the World Tag Team champions, titles they intend to hold for a long time. MNM said that they want to make their title defense at Super Cade a special one, but couldn't decide which team they wanted to defend against, so they're going to give four teams a shot at Mayhem to earn the match at Super Cade. At Mayhem it will be The Bulldogs, The World's Greatest Tag Team, Kid Kash & Lance Hoyt, and The Blue World Order in an elimination Fatal Fourway match, the winning team moving on to face MNM at Super Cade.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team
Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle had asked for this match earlier in the week when they were informed of the tag team main event at Mayhem, and they want to have themselves prepared for John Bradshaw Layfield and Bobby Lashley, so they figured why not have a match against the best tag team in GCW history, the World's Greatest Tag Team. It's very rare that fans get to be treated to a tag team match of this caliber on free TV, but these four men put on one of the best Explosion matches we have seen in a long time. Despite the fact that Lesnar and Angle are set to be across the ring from each other at Super Cade III, they are good friends and work great as a team. But no team works better than Haas and Benjamin, and they showed that by giving their opponents everything they could handle and then some. When it came down to it though, the individual skills of Lesnar and Angle were too much, and a Lesnar F-5 on Haas was enough to give them the win in this fantastic match to close out the show.

Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Lesnar pinned C. Haas with the F-5 in 0:24:07.
Rating: ****

Updated Card for Mayhem, May 21, 2006, from Detroit, MI:

Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (Intercontinental champion)/Bobby Lashley

X Title Match - CM Punk © vs. Gregory Helms

Monty Brown vs. Paul Burchill

Fatal Fourway - The Bulldogs vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt vs. The Blue World Order

Rhyno vs. Kenny Dykstra
SolomattGrundyPosted on 04/09/08 at 01:03:53

Matt's Thoughts:

The tag team match that I predicted last week is right. And Ken Doane is now Kenny Dykstra, but he'll always be YAY KENNY~! to me. And Rhyno, damn that's a hell of a what to start out Kenny's singles career.

Orton's on a bit of a losing streak, isn't he?

SQUASH~!. As I've said before, no one does it better than Stevie Richards and Benoit decides to maul Stevie, but out comes Harry Smith and Kazarian, to talk some sense into the Crazed Crippler. YOU-MAN-GAH! Benoit falls to the might of YOU-MAN-GAH!

Token title defense by Punk and Gregory Helms comes out to make an impact! Daniels teases making the save but turns his back on Punk, teetering on the edge of heeldowm. Finally, Rey makes the save, taking Helms out, but the damage might already be done to Punk.

Helms and Rey next week. Awesomeness.

Edge is a dick. Mission accomplished. That is all.

Monty does the jobski to JBL once again, with Burchill sticking his nose into the business of the Alpha Male. Of course, it's natural that JBL would have beaten him anyway.

Christian's attempts to cheat fails. The chain spells doom for Captain Charisma, but it looks like Abyss is going to be the sacrificial lamb for Edge and Christian. Thankfully, Rob Van Dam makes the save and Edge and Christian's chances of giving Abyss a con-chair-to go up in smoke. RVD/Abyss vs E & C at Mayhem? Wouldn't be surprised to see it.

So Fatal Four Way Match for the tag team title match at Super Cade. WGTT seems like the obvious victors, I'd like the Blue World Order to win, but I'm going to go with the Bulldogs tentatively.

Fantastic main event. Once again, nothing more needs to be said, as it appears that Lesnar and Angle are on the same page. I suspect that will break down as Super Cade edges closer.

I really like that you're putting some value back to the glorious world of tag-team wrestling. A four-way match to determine the challengers at the biggest PPV of the year? Would never happen in the WWE. Kudos for that.

I seemed to have missed Helms getting a title shot at Punk. He definetely needs to defeat Mysterio next week then. Mysterio vs Daniels at Mayhem?

You're giving Styles a really nice push here. Did Orton behave like a dick backstage or something? Intrigued as to where you're going with this.

Benoit is on the brink of heeldom, but Umaga beating him down switches him back. I guess Benoit will be the first PPV victim for UMANGA!
AzraelPosted on 04/18/08 at 01:27:26

Booooooooooooooo Dreamer's a tyrant! Bring back Booker! Bring back Booker!

Styles beats Orton again in even less time and this time with his finisher. It'll be interesting to see if anything sparked this change in Styles or Orton.

I was going to say something about what Benoit did to Richards, but it made me depressed. So moving on...Umaga!

Punk picks up a victory over Kid Kash, who seems stagnant now, and the big brawl results. Now Daniels pissed everybody off except the other cruisers who have already made everyone hate them.

Matt Hardy will not die!

Interesting to see Burchill interfere in the Brown/JBL match. I don't know if a match with Brown will elevate him though.

Good match between Abyss and Christian, though it's overshadowed by the post-match stuff.

Great match for the main event. Maybe Lesnar and Angle will finally enter a match without hating each other (unlikely).
