[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 4/24/06

Snabbit888Posted on 04/06/08 at 00:10:22

The road to Super Cade III is ahead of us, and we already know that on June 25th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, it will be the biggest rematch of all time as Kurt Angle will challenge Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Title! There is a long and storied history between these two as they have went from bitter enemies to best friends. But one thing is for sure, there is nothing that they desire more than to be the GCW World Heavyweight champion. But the road is long and who knows where it might lead, and it starts head in Terre Haute, Indiana! On tonight's Explosion, the volatile team of Hardcore Holly and Ken Doane get a shot at the World Tag Team Titles against the brand new champions, Johnny Nitro and Shannon Moore, MNM! Also, Christopher Daniels, the now former X champion takes on Gregory Helms, AJ Styles meets Randy Orton, and in our main event, John Bradshaw Layfield defends the Intercontinental Title against Kurt Angle!

KURT ANGLE IS CONGRATULATED BY BROCK LESNAR
Speaking of Angle, he kicked off the show by coming out for an interview to speak about his victory at Deadly Draw. Angle said that it's his destiny to be the World champion again, and at Super Cade he is going to do that for the third time. This brought out BROCK LESNAR, and Angle had a smile on his face. Lesnar shook Angle's hand and congratulated him on his win, but reminded him that if he wants to be the World champion, he was going to have to get through him, and he didn't like Angle's chances. It was getting tense in the ring, but the tension was cut by the music of JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD, who was flanked by his entourage of BOBBY LASHLEY and Lamont (who doesn't warrant capital letters). The Intercontinental champion told them both to shut up and that he was tired of the little love fest in the ring. JBL pointed out that he is the greatest Intercontinental champion of all-time and has spent the better part of 2006 kicking the crap out of Kurt Angle, so if anybody should be getting a World Title shot, it's him. Angle said that he was going to shut JBL for good tonight when he beats him for the IC Title. JBL then goaded Angle telling him that if he is so confident, he'll put that title match at Super Cade on the line, to which the ever-confident Angle promptly accepted! Tonight's main event just got that much bigger!

Match #1
Christopher Daniels vs. Gregory Helms
Despite everything CM Punk has done to show Daniels that he has changed his way, the Fallen Angel still isn't convinced. Add onto the fact that Punk won the X Title from Daniels last night under controversial circumstances (due to no fault of his own), and I'm not sure Daniels will ever be convinced. Daniels was thus wrestling this match unfocused, which is something you can't do against a Gregory Helms. He is just too good and he will make you pay, which is exactly what happened in this one as Helms wins with the Shining Wizard.

Gregory Helms pinned Christopher Daniels with the Shining Wizard in 0:07:13.
Rating: **** 1/4

Helms wasn't done yet though as he continued his assault on Daniels which brought out CM PUNK to make the save as he hit Helms with his new finisher, the G.T.S. (or Go To Sleep) to get him in the ring. Punk then tried to help Daniels up, but Daniels shoved him away and stormed to the back. We've since learned that Helms didn't like Punk interjecting himself in his business and has challenged the X champion to a match at Mayhem, which Punk has accepted.

Match #2
The Bulldogs vs. Edge & Christian (w/ Lita, Mickie James, Gail Kim)
Christian shocked the world by making his GCW debut last night as the masked man who had been attacking Edge, and then shocked us even more by turning on the retired Matt Hardy last night and laying him out with the Conchairto in front of his girlfriend Maria. Edge and Christian were in tag team action tonight against Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith, who are now officially calling themselves the Bulldogs. Kazarian and Smith are improving by the week as they become more familiar with each other's style and what each man can bring to the team, but Edge and Christian are already quite familiar with each other seeing how they are brothers. No way E&C were losing this match as they pick up the win with Christian's Unprettier.

Edge and Christian defeated The Bulldogs (Harry Smith and Frankie Kazarian) when Christian pinned Kazarian with the Unprettier in 0:03:25.
Rating: ***

CHRIS BENOIT CHASTISES THE BULLDOGS FOR THEIR LOSS
When The Bulldogs went to the back following their loss, their mentor CHRIS BENOIT was waiting for them. Benoit immediately laid into them about the way that they lost, saying that it was a pathetic display. Kazarian and Smith took the seemingly unnecessary verbal assault in stride, but Kazarian eventually had had enough and made a snide comment, asking the Crippler about being eliminated from Deadly Draw by Stevie Richards last night and the unneeded assault on Dancin' Stevie afterwards. Benoit told Kazarian to mind his own business or he'd get some of the same thing that Richards got. What has gotten into Benoit?

BOOKER T DEMANDS ANOTHER MATCH FOR THE WORLD TITLE
Booker T and Sharmell interrupted Commissioner Tommy Dreamer while he was on a phone call, which was not exactly the way that Booker wanted to start his pitch. It also didn't help that once Dreamer was off the phone, Booker didn't ask but DEMANDED that he be given another match with Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Title. Dreamer told him that no, he would not be getting a rematch. When Booker demanded to know why, Dreamer said with all the brutal attacks with a chair that Booker gave Lesnar leading up to the match, he's lucky that he was even allowed to have the match at Deadly Draw to begin with. Booker told Dreamer that he was this close to taking the World Title from Lesnar and that the real reason he wouldn't give him a rematch is because GCW doesn't want to see a black man leading the company. Dreamer told him that's ridiculous, but Booker wasn't listening, calling Dreamer a racist before exiting in a huff.

Match #3
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. HB Cade
Booker T was in a foul mood, which didn't bode well for HB Cade, who made his debut (or as he is claiming, his return) last night at Deadly Draw. This Cade is obviously obsessed with Shawn Michaels, emulating his every move and mannerism. But he is missing one major thing and that is Michaels was one of a kind. Booker wasn't in the mood for his shenanigans either way as he didn't even let Cade get in any offense, finishing him off in short order with the Axe Kick. However, Booker was looking to prove a point and continued the assault after the match, hitting Cade with the Book End before Sharmell handed him a chain out of her purse that he used to bloody Cade up badly. Referee Chad Patton tried to intervene, but he was met with a hard chain-aided punch that busted him up as well, which is sure to land Booker T at least a fine. Booker continued to pummel on Cade until the GCW Official Brigade was finally able to separate him from Cade. HB Cade had to be stretchered to the back, but he wasn't out of the woods yet because as he was being carted away, it was announced that the decision was being reversed and now Cade was the victor by disqualification! Booker snapped again and went after the stretcher, pounding on Cade some more. Booker finally ended the assault by running the stretcher hard into the ring post with Cade still strapped in it! This was an absolutely sickening event and there is going to be repercussions for sure.

HB Cade defeated Booker T by disqualification in 0:04:21.
Rating: * ¾

Match #4
World Tag Team Title Match
MNM © (w/ Melina) vs. Hardcore Holly/Ken Doane
One had to question why Hardcore Holly even took this match. He earned this right to wrestle for the tag titles after winning a triple threat tag team match for all intents and purposes by himself when Doane walked out of him. But now suddenly that there was gold on the line, Doane was all about being the model tag team partner, listening to every word Holly had to say and being the perfect teammate. That is, until the end of the match. Holly had Moore set up for the Alabama Slam and it looked like MNM's tag title reign was going to be exceptionally short. Johnny Nitro grabbed the referee's attention to try to stop this, and in doing so, allowed Doane the opportunity to hit Holly in the stomach with a chair! Holly dropped Moore which gave Doane a wide open shot on Holly's back, putting him out and letting Moore hit the Mooregasm to give MNM a first successful title defense.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when S. Moore pinned H. Holly with the Mooregasm in 0:08:49.
Rating: *** ½
(MNM retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Ken Doane backed his way to the locker room smiling and badmouthing Holly the entre way. Holly got up slowly and was clutching his elbow awkwardly. Replays show that the chairshot to Holly's back also clipped his elbow and Holly has been diagnosed as having bone spurs floating in that elbow. Holly will be on the shelf for a few months to get surgery to repair the damage.

GCW IS OFFICIALLY INTRODUCED TO UMAGA
When we returned from commercial break, Armando Alejandro Estrada was already waiting in the ring with a microphone. Estrada said that the landscape of GCW was about to change because he has officially unleashed "The Samoan Bulldozer" UMAGA! The savage himself came out to the ring as the smile on Estrada's face went from ear-to-ear. Estrada concluded by saying that Deadly Draw was just the beginning and that the real impact would be made very, very soon.

Match #5
AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
Randy Orton had a disappointing performance at Deadly Draw last night and was looking to pick up a win tonight over "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, and in the early going it looked as if he was right on pace for that. Orton had Styles under control and started to toy with him, having what looked to be a sure fire victory, but he pulled Styles' shoulders off the mat. Styles looked to be out on his feet as Orton picked him up with intentions to hit the RKO, but Styles was playing possum as he rolled Orton up and got a quick three count!

AJ Styles pinned Randy Orton after a roll up in 0:06:27.
Rating: *** 1/4

Orton couldn't believe the way he just lost the match, but a loss is a loss. Orton has challenged Styles again for a match next week on Explosion, and Styles has accepted. It will be interesting to see if Orton will have learned his lesson or if Styles will get the better of him again.

MONTY BROWN HAS A NEW ENEMY
Before we got to the main event, we heard from "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown, who came within an eyelash of winning Deadly Draw 24 hours ago. Brown said he felt his opportunity last night, how close he was to getting that main event slot at Super Cade, and one mistake took that all away from him. Brown said that he is still the Alpha Male and that he is about to take it to the next level. PAUL BURCHILL then entered the picture and proceeded to run Brown down, saying that everyone knows Brown is good, but he will never be GREAT. "Everyone knows that Monty Brown will never win the big one." Burchill smiled at Brown and walked away, but he didn't realize how much he angered the king of the Serengeti as Brown nailed him with a clothesline from behind and then threw him into the concrete wall. A future note to Paul Burchill - don't piss Monty Brown off.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont) vs. Kurt Angle
Say what you want about John Bradshaw Layfield, but he knows how to manipulate people. He pulled off a big one tonight as he managed to convince Kurt Angle to put his World Heavyweight Title shot at Super Cade on the line if Angle couldn't beat him. These two know each other very well as it was actually JBL who defeated Angle for the Intercontinental Title. JBL was doing everything in his power to make sure he'd be going to Super Cade and not Angle, but the Olympic gold medalist knew how much was on the line and he's the type of competitor that really turns it up in big match situations. Angle did that here, and JBL felt his plan starting to slip away, which was when BOBBY LASHLEY started down to the ring. Before he could get involved though, BROCK LESNAR came down to even the odds. With all of these combustible elements at ringside, it wasn't a matter of IF things would get out of hand, but WHEN. That when was answered when JBL was out on the floor and for some reason he thought it would be a good idea to shove Lesnar in the back of the head. Lesnar retaliated with a hard right hand. As referee Nick Patrick tried to separate them, Lashley was in the ring and leveled Angle with a hard clothesline. Patrick tried desperately to bring order back, but it was well past that point and he had no choice but to throw this one out.

John Bradshaw Layfield and Kurt Angle battled to a no contest in 0:14:59.
Rating: *** 1/4
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

The show went off the air with these four tearing away at each other while the GCW Official Brigade tried in vain to get them apart. We have learned that next week's Explosion will kick off with Commissioner Tommy Dreamer making an announcement regarding this situation and about the Mayhem pay-per-view.

Updated Card for Mayhem, May 21, 2006, from Detroit, MI:

X Title Match - CM Punk © vs. Gregory Helms
SolomattGrundyPosted on 04/06/08 at 19:42:27

I have a very bad feeling about this JBL/Angle match tonight. I hope JBL beats Angle and locks him out of the title match, but Angle winning the Intercontinental Title and Lesnar/Angle doing the Warrior/Hogan thing seems to be the likely possibility right now, but we'll see.

Helms continues his winning streak and out comes Punk to make the save. Daniels is not happy, challenging Punk to a match at Mayhem. I have a feeling the trigger is going to be pulled to on the double turn, sending Daniels to full blown heeldom.

Kazarian loses which always makes me happy and Edge and Christian reunited. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a run for the tag team titles eventually if they stick together for the long haul.

Smith and Kazarian face the WRATH OF BENOIT~! What has gotten into Benoit? Getting eliminated by Stevie Richards might set anyone off, as when's the last time he's won a match anyway.

The Booker Man wants a title match and cries racism, which turns him into an even bigger heel in my book. Booker, you failed and Brock smashed you into bits.

HB Cade beats Booker. Sure its disqualification and he got pummeled within an inch of his life, but a win's a win.

Sparky Plugg eats the pin after Doane cheapshots him. Damnit, Doane, don't you know that you don't piss off someone who once had a race car gimmick. When he's back, Doane will pay.

YOU-MAN-GAH! I look forward to his domination and Estrada with him just adds to the markout factor.

Orton loses to Styles with a roll up. Rematch next week, coolness, hope for an RKO victory but I wouldn't be surprised to see this feud extended into Super Cade.

Monty Brown almost won Deadly Draw, but he's going to be programmed with Burchill. That's a...unique feud but perhaps an acceptable power match, to give Monty meantime. Still, Burchill got onto the Alpha's skin from the get go and threw him through a wall. Bet Burchill was wish he was plundering booty but he might be infringing on Edge's gimmick.

Wild brawl in the main event, leading to the sports entertainment finish. Blaster Lashley, Kurt Angle, JBL, and Lesnar all get involved. One of these things are not like the other, one of these things do not belong in this picture. Looking into my crystal ball, I'm guessing that it will be JBL/Lashley against Angle/Lesnar in a tag team match down the line, perhaps at the Mayhem Pay Per View.

So yet another good show in the string of them recently.
rey619Posted on 04/07/08 at 12:27:26

Upset win for AJ, which is good. He has jobbed a lot lately, and a program with Randy would be good for him, win OR lose.

I wonder how you're gonna solve having two monsters with undefeated streaks (presuming that you will go that route with Umaga). The Lashley/JBL split I predicted seems to be in the works.

Mayhem needs a tag-match main event, and Lashley/JBL vs Angle/Lesnar works great.
AzraelPosted on 04/18/08 at 01:18:05

Uh oh. I'm concerned with this JBL/Angle match. There's no way JBL's going to win.

Poor Daniels. Losing to Helms is not something people should have to do. But Go 2 Sleep!

Booo Kazarian getting squashed.

Booker keeps his momentum by demanding a rematch, being told no, and then whuppin somebody. Good stuff.

MNM have a good first title defense, though not exactly clean. Doane finally turns on Holly though which should make for an interesting match.

Surprising that Styles beats Orton cleanly, but certainly good to see.

Ah, how could I forget about our friend the no contest? A nice brawl with the four people involved to end a quality show.
