[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 4/17/06

Snabbit888Posted on 03/31/08 at 07:28:27

We're just six days away from Deadly Draw, and tensions were at an all time high! Everyone is looking forward to the big event Sunday and their opportunity to become the top contender for the World Heavyweight Title, but they had to get out of Dayton, Ohio for Monday Night Explosion first! Our main event was a rematch of the past couple of months as Kurt Angle took on Randy Orton! Also on the show, Rey Mysterio Jr. meets Gregory Helms, Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield defends his gold against AJ Styles, Booker T meets Rob Van Dam, and so much more!

BROCK LESNAR IS ASKED THE STATUS ON HIS RIBS
The show kicked off with World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar being interviewed by Michael Cole. Lesnar had his ribs taped up heavily after the past two weeks' attacks by top contender Booker T. Lesnar said that he's a little banged up for sure, but there is nothing that is going to get in the way of him retaining the World Heavyweight Title. This brought out BOOKER T along with SHARMELL. Booker said that he doesn't buy Lesnar's act for a second and that he is in Lesnar's head and that at Deadly Draw, he would become the brand new World Heavyweight champion. This is definitely a match that I am looking forward to.

Match #1
Frankie Kazarian/Harry Smith vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt vs. Hardcore Holly/Ken Doane
Our show kicked off wrestling wise with a triangle match between three of the top teams in GCW. Two of those teams are firing on all cylinders - one is not. Despite Commissioner Tommy Dreamer's warnings to Ken Doane to work at making his team with Hardcore Holly a good one, the Teen Phenom has resisted time after time. Tonight he went as far as walking out of the match completely to leave Holly to tend for himself. This just pissed off Hardcore, who ended up winning this match on his own by catching Kazarian with the Alabama Slam.

Triangle Match:
Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly defeated Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith and Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt when H. Holly pinned Kazarian with the Alabama Slam in 0:11:53.
Rating: ** ¾

Holly didn't take any time to celebrate as he immediately ran for the back in search of his partner.

Match #2
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont) vs. AJ Styles
You might not like JBL, but it's hard to discount his wrestling abilities. He is the reigning Intercontinental champion and looks to be having a long title reign on deck - if he can get through the buzz saw that is Monty Brown at Deadly Draw. JBL was also putting the gold up for grabs tonight against "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, a man with a distinct different style. Styles kept JBL honest but this title defense was never much in doubt.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned AJ Styles with the Stock Market Crash in 0:06:04.
Rating: *** ¾
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

JBL beat Styles, but he may have a little more trouble with "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown this Sunday.

THE BWO LURES THE WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin were confronted backstage by the Blue World Order. For some reason, Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie had some sort of belief that they'd be deserving of a World Tag Team Title shot and were taunting the World's Greatest Tag Team about it. It turned out they were just working for MNM to distract the WGTT so Johnny Nitro and Shannon Moore could get the jump on them, leaving them laid out. If they can do that again this Sunday, they will be the new World Tag Team champions.

Match #3
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Gregory Helms
Mysterio is not thrilled with Gregory Helms' change in philosophy and was hoping to knock some sense into him. Helms grounded Mysterio for most of this match, using a more ground based style than he used to when he was The Hurricane. Mysterio didn't see that coming and had trouble adjusting. Helms looked to put this away when he had Mysterio up top for a top-rope power bomb, but Mysterio showed great wherewithal to reverse it into a top-rope Frankensteiner for the quick 3.

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Gregory Helms after a top-rope Frankensteiner in 0:06:08.
Rating: ** ¾

After the match, Helms seemed humbled that his arrogance cost him the match. Helms even went as far as offering a handshake to Mysterio. The crowd cheered as Mysterio accepted it, but those cheers quickly turned to boos when Helms kicked him in the stomach, dropped him with a tiger driver, and finished it off with the Shining Wizard. Helms' new attitude seems to be here to stay, and Mysterio is not going to be happy about it.

EDGE THREATENS DREAMER WITH A LAWSUIT
Edge stormed into the office of Tommy Dreamer with the Brothel in tow and he was livid, saying that he was attacked once again by a masked man who was obviously Matt Hardy a week ago, and that he was going to file a lawsuit. Dreamer calmed Edge down and said that he has already looked into it and it wasn't Matt Hardy because Hardy had an alibi. Edge wanted to know who it was then to which Dreamer couldn't give him a set answer. Edge said he was going to put an end to this and he wanted a match with this mystery man at Deadly Draw. He also sent a message to Maria, telling her to watch closely what happens because if Matt Hardy shows his face again, it'll be the same thing that'll happen to him.

Match #4
Monty Brown vs. Paul Burchill
Paul Burchill brought it for this match and grounded Brown from the get-go, attacking the Alpha Male before the match and working over the knee before he could get out of the blocks. Burchill has been ultra impressive since diving into the singles division, taking many of the top stars to the limit. He hasn't quite been able to get over the hump yet, but he's close. He would fall to the Pounce in this one, but Burchill is right on the cusp of breaking through. Deadly Draw could be his chance to do that. Monty Brown on the other hand is primed and ready for John Bradshaw Layfield and a chance to regain the Intercontinental Title. It's hard to bet against him at this point.

Monty Brown pinned Paul Burchill with the Pounce in 0:08:30.
Rating: ****

Match #5
Rob Van Dam vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell)
Booker T has never looked more confident than he does right now. He has increased his odds at winning the World Title tenfold with not one but two vicious attacks on Brock Lesnar's ribs. Booker took that confidence into his match against Rob Van Dam tonight. RVD's been in a bit of a losing funk recently, but he is one of those competitors that is always dangerous and can turn it around at any moment, so Booker had to be careful. RVD's got his shots in, but it's going to be exceptionally difficult to beat Booker T these days, who gets the win in preparation for his huge opportunity this Sunday.

Booker T pinned Rob Van Dam after a flying forearm in 0:06:34.
Rating: *** ¾

CHRIS BENOIT TALKS SOME SENSE INTO CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
X champion Christopher Daniels was backstage watching tape of CM Punk in preparation for this Sunday but was interrupted by "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. Daniels stopped Benoit before he could start, saying he knew what he was going to say. "I don't trust CM Punk and I will NEVER trust CM Punk." Daniels continued that someone doesn't just miraculously change who they are, and he is going to prove that at Deadly Draw. Benoit smirked at the Fallen Angel as he walked away.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton
The final match before the pay-per-view was next, and we couldn't ask for a bigger TV main event as Kurt Angle and Randy Orton locked horns. These two have had some epic battles in the past and this one was no exception. Both of these wrestlers are two of the favorites to win the Deadly Draw, but that wasn't on either of their minds here. The only thing they were thinking about was winning this match, and they pulled out all the stops in order to make that happen. Back and forth, back and forth, this match never slowed up and was filled with more near falls and momentum shifts than I could count. It also saw a change in result from the recent matches between these two as after a great sequence of reversals and counters, Orton pulled the RKO out of nowhere to get a clean win.

Randy Orton pinned Kurt Angle with the RKO in 0:13:52.
Rating: ****

The show came to an end with Randy Orton standing over Kurt Angle with his arm high in the air in victory. Could this be a preview of what we see this Sunday?

Matt's Random Thoughts:
Lesnar's ribs are a little bit messed up because of Booker's efforts but he promises to beat Booker. Booker disagrees and I must say, you've taken a good job in building up what appeared to be a throw away title match at first, into something more.

Then we have a tag team match. YAY KeNNY~! YAY SPARKY PLUGG~! Yay, Kazarian loses. A perfectly acceptable three way tag team match but Hardcore doesn't seem too happy that Doane deserted him. Then again when is he happy, he was Sparky Plugg!

JBL shows why he is the man, looking quite dominant in his win tonight and I have faith that he'll put down the Alpha Male menace at Deadly Draw.

The BWO want a tag team title shot. What the...oh wait, it's a SWERVE~! as MNM punks out the World's Greatest Tag Team. I'm now a bit apprehensive about MNM's chances this Sunday, as they get the last laugh tonight but I'm still pulling for them.

Helms loses to Rey? Wow, didn't expect that but I'm sure that will just only spawn Helms to be even more vicious in the ring. Handshake is in fact a SWERVE~!(x2) and Shining Wizard lays out Rey-Rey. Hopefully, this feud must continue.

Edge is going to sue Dreamer for his gross negilence but Hardy has an alibi. So Edge against the mystery man who is not Matt Hardy at the Pay Per View. That should be a good match.

Monty pounces Burchill, giving him some much needed momentum against your god and mine, John Bradshaw Layfield this Sunday. Still think he's going to lose but a fun match with Mr. Burchill.

Booker obviously had to beat Van Dam, as he's challenging for the title this Sunday.

Benoit tries to talk some sense into Daniels about CM Punk but Daniels is having none of it. Daniels seems a bit heelish by stances about Punk *coughs*

Angle does the J-O-B to the R-K-O. That is five stars right there and once again, one of the men I've been backing gets the last laugh but still, Randy's got to win Deadly Draw.

Quick Picks.

Randy for the win

Lesnar beats the Booker Man.

JBL's going to win.

MNM beats The World's Greatest Tag Team.

Daniels beats Punk due to debauchery.

Not Matt Hardy wins.
AllPowerfulGARTHPosted on 04/03/08 at 13:18:55

I was going to post my own predictions, but they're pretty much the same as Matt's, though I say Christopher Daniels beats CM Punk clean (or at least by some backfiring of Punk's attempts to cheat) and Not Matt Hardy only wins by DQ or countout or something.

And I have a sneaking suspicion this "HBK" entered in the Deadly Draw match is not who he seems.
AzraelPosted on 04/04/08 at 04:49:42

Definitely enjoying the Daniels/Punk feud. It'll be interesting to see where you go with it.

Edge probably goes loses at the PPV to the Yellow Dog.

I could actually see Angle or HBK winning Lethal Lottery, but Orton's the only one of the main guys who's been given real momentum over the past few weeks. Perhaps Lashley could win for the monsters battle, but I think it's early for that.
rey619Posted on 04/07/08 at 10:42:40

I though Helms would get the win over Rey as well, but it's more interesting (and fair to Rey) to make this into a feud, instead of having Rey do the job and that's it.

Dunno exactly what AJ has done to deserve a IC title shot after all his losses recently.

Predictions for Deadly Draw:

Lesnar and JBL retains.

MNM and Punk win belts.

Edge loses.

Eh... I'll go with a mystery entrant as the Deadly Draw winner.
