[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 2/6/06

Snabbit888Posted on 02/28/07 at 18:35:38

Love is in the air as we creep closer to Beat Your Valentine, tonight making a stop down in Cajun country for Monday Night Explosion! The Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana was filled to the rafters as the wrestling stars of GCW were in the house! After being screwed out of the World Tag Team Titles a week ago, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle demanded matches against the men who they feel cost them the titles. So Lesnar will defend the World Heavyweight Title against Shelton Benjamin and Angle will defend the Intercontinental Title against Charlie Haas! There will also be an 8-man battle royal for an X Title shot next week, Rob Van Dam & Abyss take on Bobby Lashley & CM Punk, and there will be the official contract signing for the IC Title match at Beat Your Valentine with Angle, John Bradshaw Layfield, and Randy Orton! All that and so much more!

LANCE STORM REVEALS THE STIPS FOR BEAT YOUR VALENTINE, BUT GETS A LITTLE SURPRISE HIMSELF
The show kicked off with the number-one contender, Lance Storm, coming out for a very serious interview. All jest aside, this was an important promo as Storm would be announcing what the stipulations for the World Title match at Beat Your Valentine would be. Storm said that he knew he could beat Brock Lesnar in any kind of match, so he said the stips would be... a standard one-fall match. The crowd booed, not being able to believe that even Storm could be this boring. He was about to leave, but he said there would be one little extra added into the match, and that there would be a special referee. And that referee, to no one's surprise, was EDGE, who came out with his brothel and a ref's shirt on. Edge was all smiles as he came down as if the World Tag Team champions just pulled off the largest coup in wrestling history. They had more things to worry about that that, as Commissioner TOMMY DREAMER appeared and said that those stipulations were acceptable and Edge could be the referee at Beat Your Valentine. However, before that, they will have to defend their World Tag Team Titles tonight due to how they were won a week ago. Storm and Edge began their protest, but Dreamer told them not to worry as it won't be against Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle since they are already booked. The champs let out a sigh of relief, until Dreamer said they'd be defending against MONTY BROWN and a partner of his choice! Not the way Storm and Edge wanted this night to go, I am sure.

Match #1
Shark Boy vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell)
In one of the first steps of Sharmell's new direction for Booker T's career, she signed him for a match meant to "boost his confidence" against Shark Boy. All due respect to Shark Boy, but if you want to boost your confidence, he is a good place to start. Shark Boy did what he could, but Booker is too strong of a foe for him to vanquish, falling to the Axe Kick in short order.

Booker T pinned Shark Boy with the Axe Kick in 0:02:24.
Rating: *** ½

After the match, RHYNO came out to the top of the ramp and told Booker he was going to know for sure that Sharmell was a "lying whore" and he had the video to prove it. From there, he showed the clip from Winter Warfare where Sharmell clearly and intentionally tripped Rey Mysterio Jr., thus costing them the match against MNM. Booker looked at Sharmell in disbelief, and as Sharmell tried to explain himself, he pushed his wife to the side and stormed to the back. Looks like Sharmell has been found out.

Match #2
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam/Abyss vs. Bobby Lashley/CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
Tag team action between the teams of Rob Van Dam and Abyss and Bobby Lashley and CM Punk was next, and truthfully, it became more or less a singles match a couple of minutes in as Abyss and Lashley chose to club at each other and brawl to the back as opposed to participate in this match. No matter, as we got a hotly contested match inside the ring between two rivals who can't stand each other. Punk has chosen to make RVD's life a living hell as of late due to RVD's not-so-secret lifestyle choices, and RVD has been forced to defend himself on many occasions as Punk shows no signs of letting up. RVD got a bit of revenge on Punk tonight by pinning him with the Five Star Frog Splash, but the battles with Punk are far from over and will continue at Beat Your Valentine as they will meet one more time. Also, after Abyss and Bobby Lashley were finally separated, they were told that they will be meeting one-on-one at the pay-per-view as well.

Abyss and Rob Van Dam defeated Bobby Lashley and CM Punk when RVD pinned Punk with the Five Star Frog Splash in 0:07:40.
Rating: *** 1/4

THE IC TITLE MATCH CONTRACT SIGNING DOESN'T END WELL
Our next segment was a special contract signing for the triple threat Intercontinental Title match between champion Kurt Angle, John Bradshaw Layfield, and Randy Orton, who ironically is a former ally of both Angle and JBL. The tension was obvious, and these contract signing situations never turn out well, and after all three men took their turn signing the document, as expected JBL took a cheap shot and plastered Orton with a short lariat. Angle was ready to thrown down, but JBL backed away from him and instead made a hasty retreat to the back. Orton didn't take long to get up and he was pissed, putting Angle down out of nowhere with the R.K.O. before sprinting to the back after JBL. A camera caught up to JBL, who was running toward his limo yelling for Lamont to get him out of there. JBL got in the limo and slammed the door, but he didn't notice that Orton had caught up to him. Instead of going after JBL though, he grabbed Lamont and threw him into a brick wall, and then jumped in the driver's seat of the limo! Orton was in control of the limo and JBL had no idea. Before Orton took off, he grabbed the camera man and forced him into the front seat as well, because he wanted what was going to happen to be videotaped. This can't be good for JBL.

Match #3
Intercontinental Title Match
Kurt Angle © vs. Charlie Haas
Kurt angle was still shaken up after the R.K.O. he had just received, and unfortunately for him, his Intercontinental Title defense was up next against Charlie Haas. Haas is a smart mat competitor and knew that Angle's neck would be bothering him, so he instantly jumped on Angle's neck to start this match. Angle was in a lot of trouble early on, more than a lot of people would expect. Angle persevered though, turning the tide when he caught Haas by surprise with a belly-to-belly suplex. Haas landed awkwardly on his shoulder, and it was obvious he was hurting. It didn't take long after that for Angle to hit the Angle Slam and the match was put away, Angle retaining the Intercontinental Title. It was later revealed that Charlie Haas suffered a minor dislocation in his shoulder. He will be okay and will not require surgery, but he will be taking a couple of weeks off from in-ring competition as a safety precaution.

Kurt Angle pinned Charlie Haas after the Angle Slam in 0:05:41.
Charlie Haas suffered a dislocated left shoulder. He will be out for approximately 2 weeks.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Kurt Angle retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

Match #4
On Commentary: X champion Christopher Daniels & Elix Skipper
Battle Royal for an X Title shot next week
Participants: Frankie "The Future" Kazarian, Kid Kash, Johnny Nitro, Shannon "All That And" Moore, D-Ray 3000, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, Stevie Richards, The Blue Meanie
As champion Christopher Daniels and number-one contender Elix Skipper came down for commentary (keeping their distance but still being able to verbally jab each other during the match), we had a battle royal for a shot at Daniels' X Title next week on Explosion. This was originally supposed to be a 6-man battle royal, but before it started, the BLUE WORLD ORDER came out and said they were taking it over, so Stevie Richards, and for some ungodly reason The Blue Meanie, were a part of the battle royal. Visions of the 300 plus pound Blue Meanie holding the X Title brought a collective shudder to everyone in the building, but luckily, as soon as the bWo got in the ring, they were taken apart by Frankie Kazarian and AJ Styles, who didn't take long in dumping them both out of the ring.

We were down to our original 6, and with MNM together in the ring, they decided they were going to obviously join forces, eliminate the field, and then battle it out for the title shot. It worked well enough at first, as they singled out D-Ray 3000 and took him out of the ring. They next turned their attentions to AJ Styles, and at first it seemed like it was going to be a great plan, but Kazarian interjected and took the opportunity to jump MNM while they were focused elsewhere. Nitro and Moore couldn't recover and what resulted was Styles and Kazarian eliminating them both with clotheslines almost simultaneously.

On commentary, Elix Skipper was thoroughly bashing Christopher Daniels, saying that if he can somehow manage to retain the title next week, he'll have no chance at Beat Your Valentine. Meanwhile in the ring, Styles and Kash, who had primarily steered clear of each other up to this point. They have a clash coming up at Beat Your Valentine, and somehow, Kash managed to keep his temper under control to this point and wrestle a smart match in an effort to win this battle royal. He picked now to make his attack, and he, Styles, and Kazarian all pulled off some great spots in the closing minutes of this match. Kash had both Styles and Kazarian down, but he made a mistake and climbed to the top rope. This gave Styles an opening as he dropkicked Kash and sent him tumbling to the floor. We were down to the final two, and Kazarian almost got the win quick as he dropkicked Styles from behind and sent him over the top. He thought he had won as he turned around, but Styles hooked the ropes and came back in, springboarding and nailing Kazarian with a flying forearm.

The Future wasn't ready to lie down yet though, as he fought back, exchanging offense with the Phenomenal One. Despite Kazarian's best efforts, he got caught with a big time enzuigiri which was enough to propel him over the top and to the floor, giving AJ Styles the victory and a title match with Christopher Daniels a week from tonight.

8-Man Battle Royal:
AJ Styles won an 8-man Battle Royal:
x Kazarian threw out Richards in 0:01:31
x Styles threw out Meanie after a spiral tap in 0:01:59
x S. Moore threw out D-Ray in 0:04:21
x Styles threw out S. Moore in 0:05:38
x Kazarian threw out Nitro in 0:05:41
x Styles threw out Kash in 0:08:52
x Styles threw out Kazarian after an enzuigiri in 0:10:20
Rating: ** ¾

HARRY SMITH SUBTLY TRIES TO GET CHRIS BENOIT TO CANCEL THE BEAT YOUR VALENTINE MATCH
Chris Benoit was back with Harry Smith in the locker room. The room was quiet until the Bulldog opened his mouth and hinted at the possibility of the Crippler calling off the match for Beat Your Valentine. Benoit snapped, yelling that this was the kind of thing he was talking about and why right now, Smith and Kazarian both are going to amount to nothing because they keep looking for excuses and for the easy way out. He said there is absolutely no chance that the match will be called off, and that Smith and Kazarian are both going to learn respect the hard way.

Match #5
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar © vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin's partner Charlie Haas didn't have much luck in his match earlier against Kurt Angle, falling short of winning the Intercontinental Title and dislocating his shoulder in the process. Benjamin tried his hand at taking the World Heavyweight Title from Brock Lesnar, but really, he was outmatched. He got some impressive offense in, because, quite frankly, he is one of the most gifted athletes on the roster, but Lesnar is a steamroller, and well, Benjamin was in the way. An F-5 was all she wrote and Lesnar had another successful title defense.

Brock Lesnar pinned Shelton Benjamin with the F-5 in 0:06:01.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

RANDY ORTON LEAVES JBL OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
Apparently for the last hour or so, Randy Orton had been driving JBL out of Lafayette and out into the middle of nowhere. Orton brought the limo to a stop and told the camera man to follow him outside. Orton and the camera man hid on the other side of the car as JBL got out hooting and hollering, yelling at Lamont for getting them lost (not knowing that Lamont was long gone). JBL went to the driver's door and was highly confused when no one was there, but he soon figured it out when Orton ran around and slammed JBL hard in the car door. After that, Orton grabbed JBL and hit an R.K.O., got back in the limo and sped away, leaving JBL out cold in the middle of nowhere.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
World Tag Team Title Match
Lance Storm/Edge © (w/ Lita/Mickie James/Gail Kim) vs. "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown/???
What a reversal of fortunes for Lance Storm and Edge tonight. They started the even thinking they had pulled off a great plan as Storm announced that Edge would be the special referee for his match against Brock Lesnar for the World Title at beat Your Valentine, but then Commissioner Tommy Dreamer ordered the new World Tag Team champions to defend against Monty Brown and a partner of his choice. Not a promising prospect but the champs, but their frowns were turned upside down when Brown's partner turned out to be... no one. Either Brown couldn't find a partner, or more likely didn't want one.

All things considered, the Alpha Male held up well against the odds, and you could see the frustration level growing on the Canadian champions with each passing nearfall as Brown absolutely refused to stay down. After about 8 minutes of action, the champs got frustrated to the point where they each grabbed a steel chair from the floor and were looking to give the Alpha Male a Conchairto. However, they scurried quickly from the ring when BROCK LESNAR ran down, standing tall in the ring and challenging the tag champs back in the ring. It looked like Lesnar was now going to be Brown's partner!

Brown and Lesnar made a fantastic team, showing some surprising teamwork that was more than likely pushed forward by their mutual dislike of Lance Storm and Edge. Storm and Edge tried whatever they could to cut off this newfound momentum of Brown and Lesnar, but the raw power of this makeshift team was too much. Things completely spilled into the ring as Storm tried to hit Brown with one of the tag titles, but Brown ducked and Lesnar met Storm with a huge clothesline that sent him to the floor. Lesnar went out after him, and in the ring the Alpha Male demolished Edge with the Pounce and for the second week in a row, we had new tag team champions!

Brock Lesnar and Monty Brown defeated Edge and Lance Storm when M. Brown pinned Edge with the Pounce in 0:17:50.
Rating: *****
(Brock Lesnar and Monty Brown won the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Nobody quite expected to see this, but the new tag team champions are World champion Brock Lesnar and Monty Brown! What a weird turn of events, as Lesnar is now a 2-time tag champion with his second partner, just a week apart! You know Lance Storm and Edge are going to have something to say about this.

It's been an absolutely horrible day for me, so sorry if the feedback isn't all it usually is  :-

Love is in the air?  Love can go fuck itself... sorry... only outburst... i swear...

My favorite way to kick off a GCW show right now, with Lance Storm.  Kinda dissapointed about the special guest ref being the only stip.  I mean, I like it in itself, but I was kinda expecting something more.  Still will be a great bout though.  And no matter who Brown's partner is Edge & Storm will have their hands full.

Poor Sharky.  Maybe thats why they are endangered.

Booker T needs to fucking Michael Shane Sharmel.  You know what I mean.

Didn't see RVD getting a clean pin on CM, but I think especially if RVD gets the clean win tonight, Punk is going to step it up a notch at BYV and deliver the goods.

JBL = screwed

A good opportunity for Haas, facing a stunned ANgle for the belt, but it was not to be.  At least Haas only missed 2 weeks.

Nice to see Kazarian last till the end, maybe that'll give him some momentum heading into his match with Smith.  Styles wins in convincing fashion and that'll make for a great X title match next week.

There was no way Shelton even had a chance and Lesnar showed that.  Benjamin is good... but not beat Brock Lesnar for the GCW World title good.

Orton should've taken JBL's pants too.  Ah well.  Live and learn.

Wow... did not see Lesnar as Brown's partner and especially not the two of them winning the titles.  I can dig the quick title change every so often, but I'm not quite sold on half of the titles going right back to Lesnar.  If anyone can sell me on it, it's you though Ryan.

Goodness.
Snabbit888Posted on 03/01/07 at 04:57:12

I generally don't like title hot shots, but it's been fun in this case.  I think it has actually made Edge, and especially Lance Storm, look like more of threats that they won the titles from Lesnar and Angle, and this gets Angle out of the story he doesn't need to be in anymore and Brown in, who needs to be in it.  And truthfully, I understand it's hard enough for anyone to buy Storm as a legit threat to beat Lesnar, so at least having him able to win the tag titles is helpful.  And sometimes it's fun just to play with titles.
MatteusPosted on 03/10/07 at 22:18:56

Don't have much time to comment, Ryan, but lemme give ya what I got for now...

I like the stip mainly because it fits the Storm character so well and it gives Edge a chance to be sleazy and slimy in his role.  I have no clue who Brown's partner is gonna be.

Ha!  Sharmell's been found out!  But I don't think it's gonna matter.  Booker's eventually gonna side with his wife methinks.  Funny that it was Rhyno who pointed it out.  Booker-Rhyno feud?

Good match with an interesting bunch of people.  RVD going over Punk... I guess had to happen, but I love Punk.

This IC title feud is really interesting.  You have top-tier guys fighting over a secondary belt while Lance Storm is main eventing.  You always know how to make things interesting, Ry.

Poor Haas... you knew Angle was gonna win that.  Oh, and Brock's gonna kill Shelton.  Hey they were roommates!

The bWo kicks ass... eventually they will.  Take.  Over.  Or not.  I likes me some Styles-Daniels, but I didn't think he'd come out on top here.  Should be a good match next week though.  Figure Fallen Angel will take it.

The whole Harry Smith/Kazarian/Benoit thing is cool... should be an ass kicking unless Smith and Kaz decide to turn on their mentor.  Or they'll be awesome when they step out of the ring.

Ha! to Orton leaving JBL...

Okay, I definitely didn't see that title change.  That's not like you, Ryan.  But I guess that's why I don't mind it.  Just don't make hot-shotting the titles a habit :-P  I just don't think Brock needed the belt again.  It helps get Kurt out, but... for me, it makes Storm and Edge look like chumps and gives Storm no momentum going into his match with Brock (where I'm thinking he's gonna get his ass handed to him).  But I'm thinking you know what you're doing...

Nice show man!  Can't wait for Beat Your Meat... er... Valentine!
