[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 1/16/06

Snabbit888Posted on 12/12/06 at 07:35:26

Welcome to Monday Night Explosion, live from the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tennessee! The battle lines have been drawn, and in only six days, it will be Winter Warfare! On tonight's show though, we will see an 8-man tag pitting Rob Van Dam, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, and Bryan Danielson against CM Punk, Elix Skipper, and the Basham Brothers! Also, we will see the in-ring debut of Chris Benoit's new trainee as Harry Smith teams with Frankie Kazarian to take on MNM! That, and we will see the debut of a brand new talk show as Edge brings us The Cutting Edge. His first guest? His tag team partner Lance Storm. All that, and the final push is made for War Games and Winter Warfare!

TEAM LESNAR/ANGLE UNHAPPY ABOUT THE RESULTS OF LAST WEEK
The show kicked off with Team Lesnar/Angle - Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Rhyno, Abyss, and Chris Benoit - coming out to voice their displeasure over the way in which John Bradshaw Layfield defeated Rhyno in a lumberjack match in last week's main event. They said that things would be different in War Games, which brought out the entire Corporation. JBL said that last week was a little preview of what the result would be for War Games, and that it was the beginning of the end for the championship reigns of Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle. This brought out Commissioner Tommy Dreamer who basically told both teams it was put up or shut up time, and that tonight, there would be four matches signed between these two teams. Abyss and Rhyno would face the World's Greatest Tag Team, Chris Benoit and Randy Orton would go one-on-one, Kurt Angle would defend the Intercontinental Title against undefeated monster Bobby Lashley, and in our main event, JBL will get a chance to put his money where his mouth is as he will try to take the World Heavyweight Title away from Brock Lesnar!

Match #1
Rob Van Dam/"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (X champion)/"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. CM Punk/"Prime Time" Elix Skipper/The Basham Brothers (w/ Daffney & Shaniqua)
Eight-man tag team matches always have a tendency to be chaotic, and this one was no exception. This match served as a small preview of two of the matches scheduled for Winter Warfare. As we have seen in these type of situations before, CM Punk knew that Rob Van Dam was chomping at the bit to tear him to shreds, and he used that against RVD, taunting him but refusing to get in the ring with him. This frustrated RVD, and that frustration served to disrupt his entire team's chemistry. Christopher Daniels and Elix Skipper had some great exchanges, giving us a taste of the X Title match. But the deciding fall would come when Daniels was in the ring with Doug Basham. Daniels had things firmly in control, but Skipper changed that when he kicked the Fallen Angel hard in the kidneys, causing Daniels to stumble right into the Last Impression and a victory for the heel contingent.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham), CM Punk and Elix Skipper defeated AJ Styles, Bryan Danielson, Christopher Daniels and Rob Van Dam when Doug Basham pinned C. Daniels with the Last Impression in 0:06:20.

Match #2
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton
Our first of the War Games-related took place next pitting Chris Benoit against Randy Orton. These two have locked horns many times in the past, but both men are different wrestlers. Orton possesses a meanstreak that he was previously without and he was much more willing to mix it up with the Rabid Wolverine. Benoit seems to thrive under these conditions, and the more that Orton took the fight to Benoit, the more intense the Crippler became. Orton enjoyed the brutality as well, and was more fired up after Benoit busted his lip open. Throughout this match, the momentum swung to both sides and could have ended in a victory for either man, but it was Benoit's werewithal to reverse an R.K.O. attempt into the Crippler Crossface that led to Orton's tapping out, giving Team Lesnar/Angle a 1-0 advantage for the evening.

Chris Benoit defeated Randy Orton when Randy Orton passed out in the Crippler Crossface in 0:11:09.

KID KASH WANTS ANOTHER CRACK AT SHARK BOY/D-RAY 3000, BUT DOESN'T LIKE THE ANSWER HE RECEIVES
After the antics of Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 a week ago, Kid Kash, flanked by Lance Hoyt, stormed into Tommy Dreamer's office barking out demands about how Shark Boy and D-Ray should be fired immediately for what they did a week ago. After a few seconds of Kash's incessant screaming, Dreamer silenced him by yelling, "CHUM IS NOT A FIRE-ABLE OFFENSE!" After a moment of awkward silence, Dreamer tells Kash that if he is so upset with Sharkie and D-Ray, he and Hoyt will meet them in a tag team match at Winter Warfare. "The catch being," Dreamer added, "that if you lose, the next night on Explosion, you, Lance Hoyt, will have to appear wearing a giant fish costume." Kash seemed to have no problem with this, even laughing a bit, before Dreamer stopped him. "I don't know what you're laughing about, Kash. You have to dress as a shrimp." Kash's jaw dropped as Dreamer ushered he and Hoyt out of the room.

Match #3
Abyss/Rhyno vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team
Though Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas are 4-time World Tag Team champions, many considered them to be the underdogs in this tag team as they took on the pure powerhouse team of Abyss and Rhyno. Despite their championship credentials, that assumption was holding true as the WGTT were being mowed right through and it looked like Abyss and Rhyno were going to win in a cakewalk. Haas and Benjamin showed why they are multiple time champions though as they isolated Rhyno and used their obvious technical advantage to keep Rhyno on the mat. Things were going well for the WGTT but despite what they tried, they couldn't keep the Manbeast on the mat. Abyss finally had enough of standing on the sidelines and illegally jumped in the ring and bounced Haas and Benjamin around the ring. Referee Chad Patton finally got in between Abyss and the WGTT, but in doing so, he turned his back to the action, allowing Benjamin to hit Rhyno low, leaving him prone to a Haas German suplex and a victory for the Corporation.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Abyss and Rhyno when C. Haas pinned Rhyno after a German suplex in 0:08:47.

MELINA TAUNTS MARIA YET AGAIN
Maria was backstage ready to interview Booker T, Rey Mysterio Jr., and Sharmell, but instead she was confronted by MELINA of MNM. Maria looked extremely uncomfortable as Melina ran her down, calling her every variation of "stupid" you can think of. Maria, being unconfrontational, tried to walk away, but she was cut off by JOHNNY NITRO and SHANNON MOORE. This was a very bad situation for Maria, but it was broken up when REY MYSTERIO JR. and BOOKER T came in and asked if there was a problem. MNM meekly said no, and after a tense moment, backed away. The situation was quelled for now, but will it boil over at Winter Warfare?

Match #4
Intercontinental Title Match
Kurt Angle (c) vs. Bobby Lashley
Since winning the Intercontinental (then called North American) Title, Kurt Angle has yet to make a title defense, instead being busy defending the World Tag Team Titles with Brock Lesnar. Well he had to defend that title tonight, and what a rough first title defense it was as he had to take on the Corporation's undefeated bruiser, Bobby Lashley. Though Lashley has established himself as a powerhouse in his young GCW career, he is also a highly accomplished amateur wrestler too, and he took a lot of people off guard in this match with his mat skills, especially Kurt Angle. Angle got his bearings back and began to get the advantage on the mat, which is when Lashley broke out his power offense. Lashley was wrestling the perfect match against Angle and as strange as it is to say, was essentially dominating the former World champion. Angle got his shots in, sure, but it looked like we were on our way to the crowning of a new Intercontinental champion. As far as Lashley was concerned, it was unfortunate that the biggest move he hit, a huge powerslam, was done on the floor and not in the ring, causing Angle to be counted out. This was a sight we were unfamiliar with, seeing Angle be dominated so thoroughly. He was fortunate that he was counted out. He's going to need to have a short memory come Winter Warfare. On the flip side, Lashley is proving himself to be the real deal each and every time we see him. JBL has a winner on his hands.

Bobby Lashley defeated Kurt Angle by countout in 0:06:36.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Kurt Angle retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

THE HOOLIGANS ARE AT IT AGAIN
As we saw last week, Doug Williams and Paul Burchill were back at it in their segment called The Hooligans. Last we, they played European football and as would be expected with Hooligans, it led to a fight. This week, it was American football, both men completely adorned from head to toe in full football pads. Burchill would be defending the endzone while Williams, football in hand, would try to score a touchdown from a distance of ten yards. Williams made several attempts to score, but each time, Burchill found a way to keep him from reaching his goal. Finally, just like last week, we had an Old West showdown as Williams mustered up all the fighting spirit he could find in one last attempt to score the touchdown. Williams was prepared to hit Burchill with all his might, but fell flat on his face when Burchill, who had been bracing for the impact, instead moved out of the way. Williams was pissed, and showed this by destroying Burchill with a Yakuza kick. Of course, the pain of this was minimal as Burchill was wearing a helmet, but that didn't stop Williams from kicking away at Burchill. This ended just about as expected.

Match #5
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian/"Bulldog" Harry Smith vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
We got to witness the in-ring debut of Chris Benoit's newest trainee, the son of the legendary Davey Boy Smith, Harry Smith, as he teamed with Frankie Kazarian to take on MNM, who are still looking to get their shot at the World Tag Team Titles. They will have to get through Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. this Sunday first. Smith looked impressive in his debut, controlling the action anytime he was in the ring. However, Kazarian didn't seem too interested in working as a team with Smith, not making tags when he should have and trying to win the match by himself. Ultimately, this led to the downfall of their team as Kazarian's refusal to tag out got him rolled up by Shannon "All That And" Moore and MNM picked up the win.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Frankie Kazarian and Harry Smith when S. Moore pinned Kazarian after a roll up in 0:05:00.
Rating: ** 3/4

THE CUTTING EDGE - SPECIAL GUEST - CHUCK PALUMBO
A new interview show debuted this week as Edge and his brothel presented the Cutting Edge. The first guest on this show was the host of the other interview show on Explosion, Palumbo's Pizza Place, Chuck Palumbo. The Italian Stallion was as jovial as ever, but he had a bit of an edge (pardon the pun) to him as he let the Rated R Superstar know that there was only room for interview show in GCW. Edge talked big back at Palumbo, but when the Italian Stallion got right in his face, Edge backed down. This was only to set Palumbo up for a setup as LANCE STORM attacked him from behind. Storm and Edge laid a vicious beating on Palumbo, concluding it with Edge giving him the one-man Conchairto. Edge and Storm finished by saying that this was exactly what Monty Brown had to look forward to this Sunday at Winter Warfare. Edge had another Conchairto set up for Palumbo, but luckily MONTY BROWN ran in and prevented any further attack on Palumbo.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Our main event had the potential to send shockwaves through the wrestling world as not only could it set up a victory for a team for War Games this Sunday, but it could see the crowning of a new World Heavyweight champion as John Bradshaw Layfield took on champion Brock Lesnar. JBL has been running his mouth for months saying that he cares about nothing more than becoming the World champion (mostly because of the money that it will bring him). However, talking about winning the World Title and trying to take it from the Monster from Minnesota is an entirely different ball game. JBL had a plan though - try really hard at the start, and if that doesn't work, have the Corporation run in to take Lesnar out. Well, the latter part of that plan had a better shot at working tonight and the Corporation ran in to cause the disqualification.

Brock Lesnar defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:03:58.
Rating: * 3/4
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Lesnar's plight didn't last long though as KURT ANGLE, RHYNO, ABYSS, and CHRIS BENOIT were down to help, and we had all 10 men involved in War Games tearing each other apart for the second week in a row! The show ended with both teams ripping at each other as a prelude to War Games.

Updated card for Winter Warfare, January 22, 2006, from the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri:

War Games - World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Intercontinental champion Kurt Angle, Abyss, Rhyno, & Chris Benoit vs. The Corporation (John Bradshaw Layfield, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, & The World's Greatest Tag Team)

X Title Match - Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Elix Skipper

Storm's any stipulations match on the line - Monty Brown vs. Lance Storm

Rob Van Dam vs. CM Punk

Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM

If Kash/Hoyt lose, they have to wear shrimp/fish costumes next night on Explosion - Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000 vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt

Frankie "The Future Kazarian vs. "Bulldog" Harry Smith
americamamushiPosted on 12/12/06 at 19:25:08

Tonight is going to rock the proverbial casbah, though with Angle facing Lashley, I fear he might be a few pounds of gold lighter at the end of the night.

Not a bad match to start of the action at all.  Not sure the outcome will be similar come the PPV though in the two respective matches.

Nice win for Benoit.  I wasn't sure he was going to pull it out, but I'm glad he did.  This won't do any good for Orton's mean streak though.

Shark-Ray/Kash & Hoyt segments are always gold.  AND WE NOW HAVE THE BEST.  MATCH. EVER!  :)  For the love of Muta let Sharkray 3000 win.

It was a low blow assisted win, but then again against two guys like Abyss and  Rhyno thats still a feat.

Poor Maria.  Poor innocent Maria.  Poor innocent hot Maria... sorry... zoned out for a minute  ;D

Lashley gets his win, but not the title.  I had a feeling things might end up like that, but thought maybe you'd drop the title on him anyway just as a pre-PPV surprise.  I like the belt staying on Angle for now though.

Those wacky brits.

And Kazarian & Smith don't work out too well.  Thats not good and it's only going to get worse me thinks.

Monty only saved Palumbo because he was hungry I bet.  Palumbo can't make-a da pizza if his head is smashed like a calzone under a fat guy.

Gotta heart the pre-PPV clusterfuck :)  It's a tried and true formula.

Great stuff.

Predictions

War Games - World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Intercontinental champion Kurt Angle, Abyss, Rhyno, & Chris Benoit vs. The Corporation (John Bradshaw Layfield, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, & The World's Greatest Tag Team)

X Title Match - Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Elix Skipper

Storm's any stipulations match on the line - Monty Brown vs. Lance Storm

Rob Van Dam vs. CM Punk

Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM

If Kash/Hoyt lose, they have to wear shrimp/fish costumes next night on Explosion - Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000 vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
