[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 12/12/05

Snabbit888Posted on 09/05/06 at 04:56:35

It was time for our final stop as Global Championship Wrestling invaded the Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York for Monday Night Explosion! Best of the Best is in just six days, and we had a preview match of the semi-finals and finals of the tournament as Rob Van Dam and Monty Brown teamed up to take on Lance Storm and CM Punk! We would also see Booker T take on Johnny Nitro, as well as getting an update on the condition of Joey Mercury, who suffered a neck injury last week. And in our main event, for only the second time ever, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle would be a team, going up against Anarchy, who look to get things back on track!

THE SHOW KICKS OFF WITH A HUGE BRAWL
Before our show could even get out of the blocks, ABYSS and RANDY ORTON had already found each other, and they looked as if they had already been fighting for awhile. While the opening pyro was still going off, these two were up on the ramp fighting, hitting each other with everything they had. As the fight continued, they were getting dangerously close to the edge of the stage. During all of this, the opening pyro was still going off, which the sick and twisted Orton used to his advantage. Orton was reeling and almost about to fall off the stage as Abyss fired away at him with hard punches, but when Abyss went for a big boot, Orton ducked and nailed Abyss with a low blow. Then, in one of the most dastardly things I have ever witnessed, Orton shoved Abyss in front of one of the ground based pyro fixtures that was still going off! The pyro exploded right into Abyss' face and the monster let out a blood-curdling scream. Officials came out almost immediately to check on Abyss, but it was clear that he was in bad shape. The most sickening part was that all Randy Orton could do was stand to the side and smile a demented smile. This guy is sick.

Match #1
Petey Williams vs. Bobby Lashley
Like John Bradshaw Layfield or not, but he is a smart businessman. It's hard to argue that it wasn't good business for him to bring Bobby Lashley into the Corporation, because so far, this guy has been nothing short of dominant. Petey Williams was the opponent tonight, but the way Lashley has been going through opponents, you could almost call him the victim instead. I guess Petey could be commended for even showing up. He didn't put up much of a fight though before Lashley planted him with the Dominator and that was that.

Bobby Lashley pinned Petey Williams with the Dominator in 0:01:14.
Rating: **

Another week and another domination for Lashley. So far the only man to be able to slow him down has been Rhyno, but that was courtesy of the ringsteps and the element of surprise. Will Rhyno have what it takes to pick up a victory at Best of the Best, or will Lashley's dominance continue?

KEN DOANE WANTS SOME ANSWERS FROM HARDCORE HOLLY
A week ago, Ken Doane was left once again to fend for himself in a tag team match when Hardcore Holly refused to tag in. Doane would go on to be victorious (it was just the Blue World Order, after all) but he was still mighty peeved over what happened. He questioned Holly about it, wanting to know why the Alabama Slamma left him high and dry. Holly told him to shut his punk mouth, and said he'd not stupid. "I know you talked to Dreamer about getting out of this team. But guess what, you arrogant little punk? You're stuck with me and I'm stuck with you. So we're going to make this work and you're going to listen to what I say. If you don't, you won't be wondering when your next singles match is going to be. You're going to be wondering when your next solid meal will be, because I will beat your ass so bad that you'll have to eat through a straw. Now how do you like me now... bitch?" Holly definitely isn't one to take crap from anybody, especially a young kid like Ken Doane. Doane better learn to make this work.

Match #2
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Daffney)
The GCW tag team division continues to be one of the strongest in world as evidenced by this match. Every week, it seems as if the list of contenders gets turned upside dow. The Bashams have been looking strong in recent weeks and are looking for that chance to get another title shot. They were wrestling AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson, who, although haven't moved any mountains yet, have looked solid. They would look more than solid in this one as they brought their game for sure. Though they don't have the experience of a team that the Bashams do, they make use of innovation to keep up with the more experienced team. Even the presence of the BLUE WORLD ORDER at the top of the ramp, holding a sign that said, "GCW needs more bWo," this was a great match. The Bashams, after pulling an illegal double switch, seemed to have this match under wraps as Doug had Danielson ready for a piledriver, but Styles (who saw the switch) would have done of it as he floored Doug with a flying leg lariat. American Dragon then locked on the Cattle Mutilation, a highly painful hold, as was shown by the promptness in which Doug Basham submitted.

AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when B. Danielson made Doug Basham submit to the Cattle Mutilation in 0:07:48.
Rating: **** 1/4

This has to be considered an upset. Shaniqua was not happy with the Bashams as could be seen by her whipping and chastising them on the way to the back. Meanwhile, a huge win for Styles and Danielson - the type of win they need to step out in the tag division.

Match #3
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Lance Hoyt
A vast contrast of styles in this one. Very few men have the technical prowess of Chris Benoit, while Lance Hoyt has shown that he is an effective brawler. Benoit had his troubles early on, no question, but once he slowed Hoyt down by working on the left knee, it was just a matter of time. If you're young and aspire to be a professional wrestler, Chris Benoit is certainly somebody you want to watch tape on. This was but a small example, but Benoit had no wasted motion in picking apart Hoyt's leg, getting him on the canvas, and locking on the Crippler Crossface. KID KASH ran out to help his bodyguard, but before he could get involved, FRANKIE KAZARIAN cut him off and tossed him into the rail. Hoyt couldn't get to the ropes and after the ref checked his arms, he was out.

Chris Benoit defeated Lance Hoyt when Lance Hoyt passed out in the Crippler Crossface in 0:03:51.
Rating: *** 1/4

The former World champion continues his winning ways. Benoit thanked Kazarian for his help before they headed to the back.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE PAY-PER-VIEW, BUT JBL HAS A PLAN
Back in the very lavish locker room of the Corporation, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, the reigning World Tag Team champions, are looking anything but confident. The WGTT were upset that JBL set them into a match with Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle at Best of the Best. JBL reminded them that they get the chance to take the North American or World Heavyweight Title. They were excited about that, but still felt they were in a bad position this Sunday. "Listen guys. Stop this. Do you think I would get this match signed if I didn't have a plan?" JBL's mention of a plan seemed to put Haas and Benjamin more at ease, as JBL has shown that he is willing to spend whatever it takes to get gold off of Lesnar and Angle.

Match #4
Booker T (w/ Rey Mysterio Jr. & Sharmell) vs. Johnny Nitro (w/ Melina)
We got a report before this match began from Maria in the back that said she had spoken to Barry Tarver, GCW's head trainer, about the condition of Joey Mercury's neck injury. Tarver told her that it was a major injury, but he is fortunate that it wasn't a lot worse. He said a conservative estimate for the amount of time he will be out of action is six month, but he will be evaluated several times before then to see how his injury is progressing.

This certainly puts Johnny Nitro in a tight spot as his tag team partner is now gone. The status of MNM's title shot is even more up in the air now. Also, as of right now, the match for Best of the Best that was to be Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. taking on MNM is still scheduled, but it is still in doubt. Either way, Nitro had a singles match against Booker T. Nitro was completely disoriented early on not having his tag team partner down at ringside with him, but he is a gifted young man and held his own very well against the veteran Booker T. Experience was prevailing over youth though as Booker pulled away at the end. Nitro showed great cunning though as despite taking a lot of punishment, he avoided the Axe Kick, caught Booker with a boot to the stomach, and hit a sunset flip. Nitro put his feet up on the second rope and that added leverage was enough for him to steal a win.

Johnny Nitro pinned Booker T after a sunset flip in 0:05:43.
Rating: ***

Johnny Nitro escapes with a victory here, but the fact remains that he is still without a partner for this Sunday. If Nitro was smart, he would just call the match off, because despite his talent, he can't overcome Booker and Mysterio by himself. Problem for him is, he's just cocky enough to try.

LANCE STORM FINDS HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH EDGE TO BE FRUSTRATING
How a creepy guy like Edge can have two beautiful women is beyond me, but I digress. Edge was back with Lita and Mickie James, sitting on a couch, one arm around each when his partner in crime, Lance Storm, came into the room. Storm tried two or three times to get the Rated R Superstar's attention, but like we've all experienced, it's difficult to hear your friend talk when you have the tongues of two hot chicks in your ears. Storm finally got assertive enough to grab Edge's attention, wanting to make sure that they were on the same page going into Best of the Best. when Storm asked if Edge knew the plan, Edge replied with a quick, "Yeah, yeah, no problem," before going back to his brothel. Storm physically grabbed Edge's jaw to make him look at him and said, "I'm SERIOUS." "I know, Lance. You're always serious. Don't worry. I know the plan." Lance Storm left it at that, leaving a little less than convinced.

Match #5
"The Manbeast" Rhyno vs. "Prime Time" Elix Skipper
Rhyno is a dangerous man right now. This entire week reports say he has been absolutely unbearable after the way he was screwed out of the Best of the Best quarterfinals a week ago. Rhyno could have cared less who was on the other side of the ring - it just so happened it was Elix Skipper. Skipper has impressed of late, but the Manbeast was completely out of control. Skipper was running for his life here, but Rhyno kept mowing him down. After a couple of minutes of abuse, Skipper was saved, though not intentionally, when BOBBY LASHLEY stomped to the ring. Lashley made no bones about what he was doing - he was there to fight, and he was not being sneaky about it. Rhyno invited Lashley in the ring, who gladly obliged and the fight was on.

Rhyno defeated Elix Skipper by disqualification in 0:02:24.
Rating: ** 1/2

The match was over, but nobody cared as they were going nuts for Rhyno and Lashley exchanging blows. Lashley got the better of the situation with a knee to the midsection, then whipping Rhyno into the turnbuckles. Lashley charged in, but Rhyno got out of the way. Lashley stumbled back into the ring where he was met with the GORE! Lashley had the air driven right out of him as he rolled out of the ring. Lashley recovered quickly, but Rhyno has won this battle. But can he win the war?

Match #6
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam/"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. Lance Storm/CM Punk (w/ Daffey & Shaniqua)
At Best of the Best, it'll be four men wrestling in three matches, but only one winner of the prestigious tournament. Those four men got together in a tag team preview here. Both teams were a little unorthodox, but it was apparent from the word go that RVD and Monty Brown were going to have a better go of it than Lance Storm and CM Punk. Storm tried to talked strategy with Punk before the match began, but Punk was less than responsive. RVD and Brown don't necessarily like each other and know that the chances of them having to wrestle in the finals is a distinct possibility, but they also understood that their teamwork skills here were vital to ensure their health before this Sunday. This was a great match and despite Storm and Punk having communication problems, they also had some small flashes of brilliance that kept them in the match. However, after Storm had suffered a great deal of punishment from the Alpha Male, he bought himself a quick breath when he hit a jumping side kick. Brown made the tag into RVD, and Storm went to tag in Punk, but Punk dropped off the apron and walked to the back. Punk obviously could care less what happened to Storm as at Best of the Best, he's a potential opponent. Storm was left alone, and it was only a matter of time before RVD hit the Five Star Frog Splash for the three count.

Monty Brown and Rob Van Dam defeated CM Punk and Lance Storm when RVD pinned L. Storm with the Five Star Frog Splash in 0:12:53.
Rating: **** 1/4

RVD and Monty Brown look good in victory, whereas Lance Storm has seen better days for sure. He's bound to be a bit sore after the beating he took here, but he's going to have to find a way to block that out this Sunday if he wants to be the Best of the Best.

JBL'S LARGE BANK ACCOUNT IS PUT TO USE AGAIN
Before our main event, JBL was back with Anarchy, who were just moments away from taking on Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle. JBL's intentions, obviously, were to pay Doug Williams and Paul Burchill into doing whatever it took to make sure Lesnar and Angle didn't make it to Best of the Best (at least not in one piece). It turned out from the beginning that there were going to be problems here when Williams asked if he could get this payment in pounds. JBL, being the Amero-centric man that he is, had no idea what Williams was talking about, but told him, "Yeah, no problem. Whatever you want." Anarchy went to the ring full of newborn confidence, as the segment ended with JBL saying, "What the hell is a pound?"

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle (North American champion) vs. Anarchy
With the way that they've ben wrestling as of late, you wouldn't expect to see Anarchy in the main event of Explosion. But they were here as they took World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and North American champion Kurt Angle in the dual champions' "tune-up match" before Best of the Best where they will meet the World's Greatest Tag Team in a match where all titles will be on the line. Lesnar and Angle have teamed up once before back on May 31, 2004 on the road to the inaugural Super Cade. That night things didn't go well for the team, and it ended with Angle eating the F-5 from the Monster From Minnesota. These are different times though as Lesnar and Angle have shown, at least in words, that they're on the same page. But would it translate to the ring?

In a word: yes. These are different times, and Lesnar and Angle wrestled as if they had been teaming for years. Doug Williams and Paul Purchill were banking on there being no continuity between the World champ and the North American champ. They should have thought of a Plan B. Anarchy got their licks in, don't get me wrong, but the outcome of this match never seemed to be in any serious doubt as Angle would cause Williams to tap to the Ankle Lock while Lesnar simultaneously hit Burchill with the F-5.

Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar defeated Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) when K. Angle made D. Williams submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:08:34.
Rating: *** 1/2

Lesnar and Angle had won, but they couldn't have been all together surprised when immediately, the CORPORATION made their way to the ring. Lesnar and Angle are tough, but they were outnumbered against Charlie Haas, Shelton Benjamin, Bobby Lashley, John Bradshaw Layfield, and even Lamont. There was a massive staredown before the Corporation got into the ring as they were slowly surrounding the ring. They were about to close in like a lion stalking its pray, when RHYNO ran to the ring and blindsided Lashley with a chair! The Corporation was startled, and Lesnar and Angle used this distraction to get the jump on the WGTT. Haas and Benjamin were overwhelmed as they were hit with an Angle Slam and F-5 respectively. All JBL could do was fume at ringside from the confines of his crutches. Rhyno and Lashley had disappeared through the crowd at this point, fighting the entire way. Our show came to an end with Lesnar and Angle holding up their respective titles and challenging JBL to get in the ring. They seem to have the momentum now, but it will be a totally different ball game when they're wrestling the best tag team in the world this Sunday.

Updated card for Best of the Best, December 18, 2005, from the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire:

All Titles Match - Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle (North American champion) vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)
If either member of the WGTT is pinned or submits, Lesnar and Angle are the World Tag Team champions. If Lesnar or Angle is pinned or submits, whomever took the fall will lose their title to whomever got the fall.

Best of the Best Semi-Finals - CM Punk vs. Monty Brown

Best of the Best Finals - TBD vs. TBD

Ambulance Match - Abyss vs. Randy Orton

rey619Posted on 09/05/06 at 10:17:17

Hehe... I knew Angle and Lesnar had teamed up before...  ;D

Wow.. sick stunt dude.. Now how can Abyss be in any shape at Best of the Best?

Haven't seen Petey for a while... won't see him for a while more, methinks.

Tag division looking strong with no really top contenders as everyone seems to beat everyone. Probably a tag-team turmoil in the works or something.

Kazarian is back and re-ignites his friendship with Benoit , good for him. You don't want to come on Benoits bad side.. just ask Steve Bradley.

Nitro pulls off an upset over Booker T, no doubt. I wonder who his new tag-team partner'll be though. Ken Doane may fit the bill, but then he will have to eat through a straw.

GORE! GORE! GORE! Yes....

Solid main event, the match itself wasn't the main event, but the following aftermath was. Looking forward to Best of the Best, even if there's no JBL matches scheduled. Maybe he can announce?
AzraelPosted on 09/05/06 at 15:59:06

The show starts off with a ridiculous stunt as Abyss gets horribly burned. I assume Abyss will be able to overcome it and at least put up a good fight at Best of the Best, but maybe he won't.

Boo jobbing out Petey. Lashley does look good beating a solid Cruiserweight (sorry X) Title contender in a minute, but I'm not sure if it does the division any favors.

Holly's a disagreeable man. I imagine Ken Doane is going to make his way through it though.

Great win for Styles and Danielson to beat the Bashams, even after an illegal switch. Hopefully, they'll get a title shot soon.

Kazarian comes back this week and helps his mentor get the win. Solid stuff, even if it seems they're just going to fall apart again.

I wouldn't be so optimistic if I were the WGTT. JBL's plans have had varying degrees of moderate to not-at-all success.

Nitro cheats to get the win over Booker, but it remains to be seen who his tag team partner is going to be.

Lance Storm is a serious man. And Edge is a lucky one.

Rhyno gets the best of Lashley here, but will it be the same when they're one-on-one? Unlikely.

CM Punk is completely evil, making Storm wrestle the majority of the match. RVD gets momentum going into Best of the Best, but Storm has to be looking for redemption.

JBL's so rich, he doesn't even have to know what he's paying! Good main event match that shows that Angle and Lesnar can work as a team. Are they good enough to beat the WGTT though?

Quality brawl to end the show too. It showcases a lot of the matchups for Sunday.

Nice way to open the show.  Abyss & Orton are teh killing eachother fer sherz.  Oh now!  Now has Abyss' face is burned he's going to have to be like Hogan when guy-I-can't-remember-for-the-life-of-me threw that fireball in his face and wear a mask... wait...

Petey EATS IT~!  Lashley is going to be a freak of nature in GCW, I can see it now.

Who are you to doubt the blue world order Ryan? :)  It seems to me like either Doane and Holly are going to turn into a formidable tag team or eventually split and feud... or both.

GCW so does need more bWo!  I love the Bashams, but I liked seeing Styles & Danielson picking up the W here.  Plus we know that Stevie and Meanie are the absolute kings of being subtle.

Benoit looks good in a match that he was always going to win.  Kazarian makes for a good pupil.  Soon the student will become the master me thinks.

That devious devil always has some zany plan to pull out of his butt.  Here's hoping it involves him talking to an inflatable dinosaur. ;)

It's good to see that Nitro will be able to handle himself while being sans Mercury.  Though to much of a taste of the single life and he might not want to team once Joey is back.

If I were Lance I'd be less than convinced too.  The nookie is a powerful thing.

Well, I figured Rhyno would win in short order, but wasn't expecting the DQ.  These two juggernauts are going to destroy each other and possible leave a giant crater where the GCW ring used to be in their wake.

Lance Storm can't be happy with not only losing to Brown and RVD, but being walked out on by Punk.  Though as far as Mr. CM is concerned, it was smart thinking.  Why take more punishment before BotB than he has to?

Williams & Burchill have not been doing too well since coming up to GCW (well... back up for Williams) and with opponents like Angle and Lesnar you had to know their luck wasn't going to change.  They last longer than I was expecting them to though.  So quote Bill Murray in one of his greatest roles ever "Well they got that goin' for them... but its not a cinderella story"

JBL FUMES!~!~! I can picture little cartoon stink lines coming off of him, thats the best part.

BotB is looking hawt like rootbeer with an A and a W.

Good show... but needs more bWo ;) heehee

Predictions

All Titles Match - Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle (North American champion) vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions) - Something will happen where no titles change hands me thinks

Best of the Best Semi-Finals - Lance Storm vs. Rob Van Dam

Best of the Best Semi-Finals - CM Punk vs. Monty Brown

Best of the Best Finals - Storm vs. Punk

Ambulance Match - Abyss vs. Randy Orton

X Title Match - "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Kid Kash

Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM - Nitro and Melina are crafty little buggers.  They'll find some way to crook out the win.

"The Manbeast" Rhyno vs. Bobby Lashley
91Posted on 09/06/06 at 21:28:45

Oooh, that was pretty sick. Orton's due the win this time around, I'm assuming, and this is a nice way to give him the edge. And if Abyss doesn't make it through, no matter, he can become part of the TNA roof.

Lashley wins, as if there was any doubt.

Poor old Ken Doane, stuck with Groucho Marx over there. I'm sure they will make it work though.

Big win for A.J/Dragon but this was all about the bWo. And the Bashams getting spankings as they left.

Benoit wins with comparitive ease there. The future split between Benoit and Kazarian may be back on the cards again I guess.

JBL has a plan. Like hell will it work. Lesnar and Angle are taking this one.

Well we knew Mercury was pretty much toast. No idea who Nitro is going to pick as a partner (unless you do an angle where he goes it alone and ends up winning the tag belts by himself due to a series of fluke wins and dubious decisions) but a huge win for him here, one that he needed under the circumstances.

Rhyno wins, I don't think I've seen you do this many squashes on one show before. Poor old Elix, I'd have liked to seen him do something heelish after the beatdown. Still, we await Rhyno/Lashley with baited breath.

You had to know SOMEONE would turn on someone in the BotB tag team match. Punk seemed sufficiently evil enough to do it so it figures.

Awww, I was hoping for Anarchy to do something big here. Still, Lesnar and Angle look good going into the PPV, particularly when Lesnar hit Regal with the F5.

All Titles Match - Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle (North American champion) vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)

Despite others misgiving, I don't think you're cheap enough to pull a bait and switch DQ finish here or something. New tag team champions, surely.

Best of the Best Semi-Finals - Lance Storm vs. Rob Van Dam

Lance Storm advances through this one.

Best of the Best Semi-Finals - CM Punk vs. Monty Brown

Winner of this wins the tournament IMO. But Monty has this one.

Best of the Best Finals - Lance Storm vs Monty Brown

And Monty to get his long awaited main event push with a win.

Ambulance Match - Abyss vs. Randy Orton

It's Ortons turn this time and Abyss has the pyro injuries that probably put him in an ambulance to begin with.

X Title Match - "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Kid Kash

Daniels claws onto the belt.

Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM

Obviously there's no Mercury but Nitro and whomever get the duke.

"The Manbeast" Rhyno vs. Bobby Lashley

And Lashley fairly obviously here.

I've also noticed that of the three of us who have made picks, we've all picked someone different to win the tournament. Nobody has gone for CM Punk, so you'll probably have him win just to stick it to everyone. ;)
rey619Posted on 09/07/06 at 09:22:05

I forgot my predictions....

Haas or Shelton cannot hold one of the two major belts.. but I don't see how Lesnar and Angle can be tag champs either... I'll go for a bullshit finish  ;)

CM Punk defeats Rob Van Dam in the finals

Randy Orton

Christopher Daniels

Booker T & Rey Rey

Rhyno

Yep, four sets of predictions, four different winners picked for the Best of the Best tournament.

Drinks are on whomever picked correctly.

Or that your booking is so random and erratic that nobody can bear to pay attention any more and used pins and/or random number generators to make their picks. ;)

*edit* By the way, my very genuine tipple is a triple vodka and Red Bull.
