[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 11/21/05

Snabbit888Posted on 08/19/06 at 02:17:39

Welcome to Monday Night Explosion, live from the Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada! Winter is fast approaching which means colder temperatures outside, but things in GCW are only going to get hotter! A lot of big happenings tonight, including some announcements from Tommy Dreamer regarding our next pay-per-view, Best of the Best, and a huge main event pitting the World's Greatest Tag Team in a non-title match against Brock Lesnar and Rhyno!

TOMMY DREAMER ANNOUNCES THE BRACKETS FOR BEST OF THE BEST
Commissioner Tommy Dreamer kicked off the night by making a few announcements. His first announcement was that due to his actions last night, head referee Jimmy Appleseed is no longer employed by GCW. He wished him the best in his future endeavors. Dreamer announced that veteran referee Nick Patrick would take over the duties as GCW's head referee. After that, the topic of conversation turned to Best of the Best, which will take place from Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, the first GCW event ever from New Hampshire, on December 18th. He announced the brackets for the annual 16-man tournament, adding that the first round and quarterfinals will take place on Explosion, while the semi-finals and finals will be at the pay-per-view. The brackets are as follows:

Kurt Angle vs. Lance Storm
Rhyno vs. Lance Hoyt

Rob Van Dam vs. Bobby Lashley
Chris Benoit vs. Kid Kash

Abyss vs. Randy Orton
Frankie Kazarian vs. CM Punk

Monty Brown vs. Edge
Christopher Daniels vs. Elix Skipper

He added that the winner of this tournament would get one match at Beat Your Valentine against whoever he wanted with any stipulations he wanted. At this point, JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD and the entire Corporation came out to confront Dreamer. JBL said that it was an outrage that Kurt Angle was in the tournament instead of being suspended for his unprovoked attack last night (which got an audible laugh from Dreamer). He said that it was even more outrageous that he wasn't in the tournament at all. Dreamer assured JBL that he would have been in the tournament, but the doctor hadn't cleared him to wrestle due to the ankle injury he suffered because of Angle's Ankle Lock. Furthermore, although he didn't condone Angle's actions, he will not be suspended because it was an attack by the Corporation that was unprovoked a month ago that put Angle on the shelf. He added that JBL should consider himself lucky he's not being suspended given the little stunt he pulled with Jimmy Appleseed. JBL ended the interview by saying that this small setback isn't going to stop him and that the Corporation WILL have the World Heavyweight Title soon enough.

Match #1
Best of the Best - Frist Round
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
Our opening contest of the night was our first of four Best of the Best tournament matches featuring Chris Benoit taking on Kid Kash. Benoit hasn't wrestled since he won the Eddie Guerrero Memorial Cup, something he is very proud of. Kash had a tough match last night as much like everyone else involved in the X Title ladder match, he is bruised and beaten. Kash had an equalizer in Lance Hoyt though, which helped keep him in this match. This one was a dandy, and Kash certainly has a great future in GCW, but Benoit had the better present today as he thwarted off Hoyt's interference and distractions to pin Kash with the swandive headbutt.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Chris Benoit pinned Kid Kash after a swandive headbutt in 0:07:48.
Rating: ****

Chris Benoit is the first man to move forward into the quarterfinals, where he will meet the winner of next week's Rob Van Dam vs. Bobby Lashley match.

THE bWo WANTS SOME ANSWERS FROM TOMMY DREAMER
We see Tommy Dreamer in his office, and this week, his office is a little more festive than normal - a couple of pictures, a big bowl of fruit, etc. The calm of the office is interrupted when STEVIE RICHARDS and THE BLUE MEANIE come into the room, looking all angry and stuff. "Big Stevie Cool" tells Dreamer that the bWo is taking over, which does absolutely nothing to impress Dreamer. Stevie wants to know why neither he nor "Da Blue Guy" are in the Best of the Best tournament, while Meanie is off camera doing something pointless I'm sure. Dreamer tells Stevie that its simple - "You haven't won a single match here, and neither has 'Da Blue Guy.' You win matches, you get to do things like wrestle in the Best of the Best." Stevie ranted something that didn't make any sense when Dreamer suddenly got up and screamed at The Blue Meanie. "What the hell are you doing? Stop eating those!" The camera panned over to Meanie, who had eaten the entire bowl of fruit. "That was PLASTIC fruit, you idiot!" Meanie looked down at his hand which was grasping half of a plastic apple, shrugged, and continued eating it. "Get out of my office..." Dreamer said to end this strange segment.

Match #2
Best of the Best - First Round
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita & Mickie James)
Our second tournament match this evening was a rematch from Glory between Monty Brown and Edge. The Rated R Superstar looked to learn from his mistakes from last night when he fell to the Alpha Male. He essentially punched himself tired which allowed Brown to pick up the win. Edge wrestled far more conservatively, trying to hit and run on Brown. The problem with that is that Brown is as quick as a cat himself, so it's hard to stick and move when you're being stuck. Edge fought through though and showed that he can take an exceptional amount of punishment but continue to find ways to stay in the match. Also, with his two girlfriends at ringside, Lita and Mickie James, he has plenty of distractions available for his opponents, which was a major factor in Edge's performance here. However, much like last night, Edge would fall to the Pounce when attempts at the Spear failed, and the Alpha Male advances.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Monty Brown pinned Edge with the Pounce in 0:11:59.
Rating: **** 1/4

Monty Brown once again defeats Edge and moves onto the quarterfinals. Edge was depressed at first, but Lita and Mickie James promised they'd make him feel MUCH better. *shudders*

MNM WANT THEIR TITLE SHOT, BUT GET SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD
MNM's tug-of-war with Tommy Dreamer continued tonight as they went into his office to demand that they get their title match tonight. Melina said, "We stayed away from the building last night, just like you told us too. So we want our title shot, and we want it NOW." Dreamer said he would love to give it to them, but it's not going to happen here, saying that the World's Greatest Tag Team is already booked in a match tonight, and even giving some false praise by saying a team of MNM's caliber should only wrestle for the World Tag Team Titles on pay-per-view. Though Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury certainly enjoyed having their egos stroked, Dreamer told them that they would be in action tonight in a Fatal Fourway. "You win that one, and I'll see what I can do about pushing this title match thing along."

Match #3
Best of the Best - First Round
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (X champion) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper
Our third tournament match pitted the newly crowned X champion Christopher Daniels taking on his former partner in Triple X, "Primetime" Elix Skipper. These two were partners back in the early days of GCW, but they have gone very different directions since then. Daniels is the reigning X champion, but the title wasn't on the line here, only advancement in the tournament. Daniels is a hell of an athlete and doesn't seem to know when is an appropriate time to take a little rest. His body still hasn't recovered from the past two months of hell he's put himself through, including the Dog Collar match and last night's show stealing ladder match. Daniels is a gamer and will always come to fight, but Primetime had an easier time last night that didn't involve a ladder, and thus he was able to capitalize on the Fallen Angel's fatigue, countering out of the Angel's Wings and hitting the Play of the Day for the 1-2-3.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Elix Skipper pinned Christopher Daniels with the Play of the Day in 0:05:52.
Rating: *** 1/2

Elix Skipper with a solid victory over the X champion, as he moves on to face Monty Brown in the quarterfinals of Best of the Best. This also has to put him in contention for the X Title when this tournament is over. The Fallen Angel now looks to rest up and hopefully get back on track if he hopes to hold his new championship for long.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - ROB VAN DAM
Rob Van Dam was not in action tonight, but he was the guest on everyone's favorite pizza-themed interview segment, Palumbo's Pizza Place. RVD started by saying that he is back in the singles division and he has every intention of winning the Best of the Best tournament. The Italian Stallion hated to be the bearer of bad news, but he reminded the Whole F'n Show that he was going to have to face Bobby Lashley next week in the first round of the tournament, and then noted how JBL's new hired muscle absolutely dominated Rhyno last night. RVD, in his ever cocky way, told Palumbo he's not worried, and he's going to show everyone why he has no reason to worry, because he is ROB... VAN... DAM.

Match #4
Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane/"The Alabama Slamma" Hardcore Holly vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Daffney) vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
MNM was hoping to get their title shot tonight, but they were instead put into this Fatal Fourway. The first team to secure a pinfall or a submission would be declared the winner. All four of these teams are certainly in the running for a title shot in the future, and this match could go a long way to see who gets the next crack at the gold. One thing that became highly clear is that MNM and Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. haven't resolved their differences yet and their fight continued here as Melina and Sharmell once again got into it on the floor. This prompted the four men to take the fight to the outside and fight all the way up the ramp to the back. With those two teams out of the equation, it left only Doane and Holly and the Bashams. Doane and Holly picked up their first win as a team last night, but they wouldn't get that same result as Danny Basham caught Doane in a Fujiwara armbar, a highly painful hold. Doane tried to get out and actually got to the ropes at one point, but when he did, Doug Basham grabbed the attention of the referee. While the ref was distracted, Shaniqua smashed Doane in the shoulder with the riding crop, allowing Danny to pull the Teen Phenom back to the middle of the ring, where he had to tap out to prevent further injury.

Four Corners Match:
The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro), Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly and Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. when Danny Basham made K. Doane submit to a Fujiwara armbar in 0:06:15.
Rating: ** 1/2

The Bashams obtain another victory under less moral circumstances. Viewers were told that the fight between Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. and MNM was broken up, but that these two teams will continue their feud at Best of the Best on December 18th.

Match #5
D-Ray 3000 vs. Bobby Lashley
Bobby Lashley made a huge impact last night when John Bradshaw Layfield introduced him as the man to personally take care of Rhyno and for all intents and purposes, all of his problems. He made his Explosion debut tonight against D-Ray 3000, and I think we can say with full accuracy that JBL has a winner on his hands. Despite all of D-Ray's efforts, there was no chance of him winning this match. He tried his best, but Lashley's overwhelming size and power prevented D-Ray from even getting a single punch in before he hit the Dominator for the easy win.

Bobby Lashley pinned D-Ray 3000 with the Dominator in 0:01:36.
Rating: 3/4*

D-Ray 3000 didn't stand a chance against Lashley here. Lashley wasn't done though as he continued to pound on D-Ray, sending a message to the rest of GCW that the Corporation was not to be messed with. Lashley grabbed a steel chair and had bad intentions, but he was stopped from completely decimating D-Ray when ROB VAN DAM ran out and hit the Van Daminator on Lashley! Lashley staggered and fell through the ropes to the floor. He tried to get back in the ring, but thought better of it when he saw RVD brandishing the chair. You have to give RVD all the credit in the world for his guts, but is Lashley the type of guy you want to piss off when you have to wrestle him in a week?

RANDY ORTON IS NOT DONE WITH ABYSS
We were surprised to see Randy Orton out here considering how he was power bombed onto a steel chair by Abyss. Orton, to his credit, has showed little to no fear against Abyss, and that attitude shined through tonight. Orton told Abyss that he is not done with him by a long shot, and that he has made it his obsession to take Abyss down once and for all. "You are beatable, Abyss. You're big and you're bad and you're scary, but I will see to it that you are put on the shelf for a long, long time." Orton went on to have some strange words talking about how obsessed he is with putting Abyss out of GCW, saying that he wants nothing more this Christmas than to put Abyss in the hospital. Orton said that next week, his fantasy would become a reality and that much like last year, Orton would win the Best of the Best tournament.

Match #6
Best of the Best - First Round
Kurt Angle vs. Lance Storm
Our final Best of the Best first round match promised to be a huge one as Kurt Angle returned from his injury he sustained after an attack by the Corporation, taking on the reigning North American champion Lance Storm. Storm's title was not on the line, so he was able to wrestle a more aggressive match without fear that he would lose his championship. Angle was highly motivated however, and he is back with a vengeance. Angle looked good in his return and it was hard to envision him losing this match - that is, until JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD got involved. JBL came out on his crutches to get a closer look at this match. Angle had to do everything he could to restrain himself from going after JBL and focus on advancing in the tournament, but JBL knew he was in Angle's head. Late in the match, JBL's personal limo driver tripped Angle up, which sent Angle into a fury. Angle turned and grabbed Lamont by the coat, but this left him wide open for JBL to smash him between the eyes with the crutch. Angle stumbled back into the ring where Storm hit a rana and was able to pin the stunned Olympic champion.

[Best of the Best - First Round]:
Lance Storm pinned Kurt Angle after a rana in 0:06:39.
Rating: ***

Despite Storm's status as North American champion, this has to be considered an upset as Kurt Angle looked highly dominant in this match. The issues between Angle and JBL will come to a head sooner or later, but there is certainly more fuel being added to the fire here. Despite the cheap way it happened, Lance Storm advanced on to the quarterfinals.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Non-Title Match
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/"The Manbeast" Rhyno vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)
The World Tag Team Titles were not on the line in our main event, but JBL was hoping that two more of his problems would be solved if the World's Greatest Tag Team could take out World champion Brock Lesnar and former associate Rhyno in this match. Lesnar and Rhyno have no love lost for each other dating back to May when the Manbeast was hired by Kurt Angle to put Lesnar on the shelf. My how things change. Lesnar and Rhyno weren't exactly buddy-buddy, but they have a common enemy and they were willing to put past differences aside, at least for the duration of this match. Though individually, Lesnar and Rhyno possess the strength and brute force to dominate men of Charlie Haas' and Shelton Benjamin's stature, in a tag team atmosphere, the complexion of the fight changes immensely. NOBODY in the business has the tag team skills of Haas and Benjamin, and they used that to exploit Lesnar and Rhyno, who are good at many things, but wrestling as a team may not be one of them.

Lesnar and Rhyno were on the receiving end of a good chunk of offense, but they are two extremely tough guys, and they proved it by constantly fighting back and dishing out the pain. JBL did not like where this match was going, so once again he hobbled to the ring on his crutches looking to disrupt this match, but KURT ANGLE had other ideas as he jumped JBL as the crowd went nuts. Angle pounded away at JBL's face with right hands before officials and Charlie Haas ran down to break it up. Haas helping JBL though resulted in Benjamin being all alone in the ring, where he ate the F-5 and had his shoulders pinned to the mat.

Brock Lesnar and Rhyno defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Lesnar pinned S. Benjamin with the F-5 in 0:18:08.
Rating: ****

Kurt Angle was pulled away from JBL and held at bay while Lesnar and Rhyno celebrated in the ring. With all of the officials occupied with trying to keep the enraged Angle away from JBL, they didn't notice BOBBY LASHLEY come in from the crowd and decimate Rhyno with a lariat. Lashley was ready to go after Lesnar too, but the World champion turned around and the two beasts engaged in a staredown. The crowd was red hot for these two to go at it, but JBL knew it was not wise as he called his hired muscle out of the ring. The crowd booed loudly, but it was obvious here that when these two monsters lock up, there are going to be fireworks for sure.

Be sure to join us next week for Monday Night Explosion, live from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada! Already signed for the show are the final four first round matches in the Best of the Best tournament, and in a rematch from this week, Lance Storm and Kurt Angle will wrestle one more time, this time for the North American Title!

Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM
suicidalbynaturePosted on 08/19/06 at 02:34:55

BEST OF THE BSET! CZ-DUB CZ-DUB!! Awesome brackets, very intriguing matchups. Several different outcomes are possible and the way you've been pushing these guys it will be interesting, very very interesting.

Benoit > Kash. Nuff said. Four stars is pretty good!

The bWo was my favorite ECW gimmick of all time and while I doubt Stevie will turn into the contender he was in ECW it gives your enhancement talent some personality, which is always key!

Poor Edge. Could he inadvertently be turning into GCW's version of Meat? Too much pity sex, not enough hot steamy live sex celebrations methinks!

Dreamer is a BA...I do think MNM will finally beat him up though. They ARE de facto number one contender's do to their guarenteed title shot so he can't jerk them around for too long.

Elix is looking very, very strong. I can see him sneaking into the semi-finals due to some Edge shennanigans.

MNM is never going to get their title shot! Your tag team division is so strong because while WGTT is clearly the class of the division the rest are all lumped together. Very compelling stuff. I don't think MNM gets their shot until a face team beats WGTT though so I'll be curious to see how this works out.

D-Ray got owned and RVD IS XTREME~! My money says Lashley/RVD ends in a double DQ/countout.

I love this new Randy Orton. If only the real life one started acting like this one.

How could my Olympic champion lose to a Canadian? Ouch. I thought Angle was going to take it to get some retribution but I thought wrong.

I want to see Lashley vs. Brock. That is a match that I think would blow all of our minds but I wouldn't be surprised if you teased it but didn't pull the trigger on it for a while.

Good shit, young sir.

Best of the Best then... I'll stick by my recent predictions and say Monty or Abyss takes it (probably the former) but there's plenty of time for me to change my mind.

Benoit moves on as expected, but I'm thinking Lashley may just grind him to a halt, with a little help from his friends of course...

At least the bWo are trying. The big question is - is there a third man?

Brown wins again. I would say 'poor Edge' but I'd be willing to feel the Pounce under the circumstances.

MNM certainly aren't dropping out of the title picture yet, but the build to them getting their big shot certainly warrants a run with the gold.

Didn't think Daniels would lose so soon after the marathon from the night before, though it's easily explainable under these conditions to cover for any heat he could have lost. I don't expect Skipper to explode through the tournament, but well done anyway to him.

Actually Palumbos Pizza Place is only my SECOND favourite pizza-themed interview segment, just behind Mideons Mozzarella Madness.

The Bashams get another win. OK, they may have picked up a few wins lately but they've been in a bit of a rut and need to recapture a little of their identity again. Maybe this was the plan here...

Lashley wins, no shock there. Wonder if Van Dam actually hit the Van Daminator this time.

Oh yeah, it's almost christmas in GCW world isn't it. I'm sure there's plenty of wacky holiday fun to come with Abyss in the next month. Oh yeah, and good luck to Randy. He'll need it with his qualifying match...

Strangely I figured Angle would lose this - he's already the biggest name in GCW so he doesn't need to win the tournament, he was going to be screwed over when he did lose, probably (and you proved me correct here) by the Corporation and since it would be far more beneficial to build to him having a big PPV match against JBL rather than a match against someone from bracket 2 (Lashley?), he was going to go out here or in the quarters. Since Lance was the most logical of the three in Angles bracket to put over, the smart move was to have Angle lose here via interference, furthering the fued with him and JBL, saving Angles heat in the process by making it non-clean but giving Lance a huge win and thus just a little rub of the green (just a little - a clean win would have really done it but made very little sense at this stage). So after that long winded spiel, I'm glad to say everything makes perfect sense.

Good main (another schmoz ending... hmmmm) and while the main event super-duo beat the awesome traditional tag team, which I usually hate, at least WGTT were beat more by circumstances than being outwrestled. And a VERY nice tease of Lashley and Lesnar. It's little things like that that really put over the new big guys. Even though they don't necessarily have to go at it now, or even the immediate future, small things like that sow the seeds for giant oaks. Though I think of this one to be more of a cypress.

The opening leg of BotB has some good matches in it, but also, when you look ahead you see that there are also going to be some great matches along the way and that you won't be giving up too much too early.  I personally think Angle/Storm will be the darling of the opening round from the standpoint that it has the makings to be technically beautiful.

Kash had Hoyt and wasn't 100% thanks to last night's match, but against Chris Benoit, I don't think either of those factors would've helped Kash much.

HAHAHAHA!  YES!  I knew you were using the fruit bit, but I still laughed out loud when I read it.  Now... about lets talk about using HoaS Khali and Kenny the Pinhead... :)

Hey... considering what Edge gets for losing I think I would've just said "Fuck it" and thrown the match in the first place ;)

Dreamer is stringing MNM a long a little.  I love it.  As long as he keeps stroking their egos he can probably do it for a while too

Daniels may have been hurting, but still, a solid win over a champion is a solid win over a champion.  Skipper moves on, but even if he doesn't win BotB (Which I don't think he will) I have to think he gets a shot at the X title.

So MNM doesn't get the win tonight.  Hurray for the Bashams though.  Not only that, but MNM won't even get their title shot at the next PPV, they'll be facing Book & Rey.  Which mind you is good for us, cause it'll be a great match, but MNM has to wait for a real chance at getting the gold.

Yeah... I didn't think D-Ray was gonna win... yeah... D-Ray would've done the job to a sack of sweet valencia oranges...

Darn you JBL!  I highly doubt Lance cares if the win was cheap or not either ;)

hawt main event.  Takes THAT JBL!  Haha!  Lesnar & Rhyno pick up a nice win over the Corporation and the WGTT doesn't suffer ill effects from losing... though I guess Shelton might argue otherwise ;)

When Lesnar & Lashley meet its going to be devistating.

good stuff
AzraelPosted on 08/20/06 at 07:47:29

Best of the Best time! Looking at the brackets, I'd say Benoit or Monty Brown seem like the favorites. Angle and Storm don't need it, while it seems early to pit Lesnar against Lahsley.

Tommy Dreamer's a jerk though. You will listen to JBL's complaints with respect, Mr. Dreamer. And signing Nick Patrick to get a respectable referee? Somebody didn't watch his WCW. But then, a lot of people didn't watch WCW.

Benoit rolls through the first round. If Kash was healthy, I think he'd make it respectable, but he still wouldn't come out on top.

That was a pretty funny skit with the bWo. If there are more and less fatboy dancing, I might even start to like them.

Brown picks up the win, but Edge isn't too sad I guess. Solid match.

MNM is never going to get their title shot are they?

Skipper picks up a big win over the X Champion. Daniels has a built-in excuse, but Skipper still looks good.

RVD's going to get killed. Of course, he can smoke the reefer to dull the pain.

MNM is definitely not getting this title shot. It looks like a feud with Booker T and Rey is imminent, while the Bashams start to get hot again.

There was no way D-Ray was winning this match. And RVD getting the attack in after at least makes things interesting next week.

Orton's making big words and I keep thinking this is the time he'll back it up, but this is the third time now. Some things are just meant to be.

Storm beats Angle, which is kind of surprising, but it sets up an Angle/JBL match nicely. Storm gets elevated for beating the former World champ too.

I'm iffy about the tag champs losing to two random people regardless of the reason, but the match was good. Angle vs. JBL is a definite if JBL doesn't pay off the doctor to keep saying he's hurt.
rey619Posted on 08/20/06 at 12:28:53

Oww... a King of the Ring-like tournament.. I like.. I'll predict CM Punk to win it. But that's just because I'm such a mark.

Predictable win for Benoit. Kash was probably still feeling the effects from crashing through the tables with Punk yesterday.

hehe... eating plastic fruit.. nice comedy skit, every promotion needs some of that.

I thought Aaron Stevens was the "Maharajah of the Menage a trois-a". Very well, Edge falls to the Pounce again, wonder where you'll take Edge from here. He is not going to main event any time soon, thank god.

Skipper defeating Daniels may seem odd at first glance, but really isn't. This sets Skipper up as the next contender to the X Title.

Ah.. no.. D-Ray falls to Lashley.. no wonder, he didn't bring his fish with him! I think RVD is over his head though.

The JBL vs Angle feud is coming along nicely, that's fer sure. I like Angle a lot as a face, probably better than as a heel. I still wonder who the next top contender will be, or what Lesnar will be doing at Best of the Best. Lashley, perhaps? In a non-title match.

Nice follow-up show to your PPV.
