{NAPW} Throwdown Thursday 11/3/2005

suicidalbynaturePosted on 08/08/06 at 23:39:15

The Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is filled to capacity to witness the inaugural New American Pro Wrestling Event, Throwdown Thursday being broadcast LIVE on OLN! Tonight promises to be a barnburner as two Intercontinental Tag Team Title Tournament matches have been announced with Jack Evans and Teddy Hart, collectively NEXTGEN taking on The Backseat Boyz in one tilt and The Dudley Boys battling Fertig and Gangel aka Creatures of the Night. The NAPW Internet Title will be on the line in the Main Event, a ten man battle royal featuring some of the brightest stars in the industry today. All this and much more tonight!

JOHN CENA ADDRESSES THE CROWD
"The Time Is Now" hits as John Cena makes his return to the national wrestling scene to a rather lukewarm response. He looks all business as he heads down to the ring. Cena tells the crowd that they are all a part of something much bigger than they'll ever imagine. Tonight is the start of the revolution and he is going to be the leader. He is used to being the first and this time around it would be no different as winning the Heavyweight Title is his number one goal. These remarks bring out an angry Ken Shamrock who tells Cena and the crowd that he is the most dangerous man in the company. Shamrock is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that his name is the first one engraved on the Heavyweight Title belt. This brings out Scott Steiner who, in a roundabout way, calls both men chumps and says that the freaks want Big Poppa Pump to be the first Heavyweight Champion. GOLDUST of all people comes out after this remark and agrees with Steiner. He constantly refers to Steiner as "Pump" and tells him that even though they have a match later on tonight he wants to be Pump's number one freak. This causes Steiner to snap and attack Goldust which leads to a big brawl that is eventually broken up by NAPW security. Goldust and Scott Steiner going one on one later on tonight is a guaranteed explosive situation.

Match One
Intercontinental Tag Team Title Tournament Quarterfinal Match
NEXTGEN (Teddy Hart/Jack Evans) w/Dawn Marie
Vs
The Backseat Boyz (Trent Acid/Johnny Kashmere)

This match was an absolute war of attrition between two very exciting teams. The Backseat Boyz are an established tag team that dominated the northeastern independent circuit before signing on to NAPW. NEXTGEN are simply two men who are out to prove that they are the future of tag team wrestling in this business. Couple their desire with Dawn Marie, a woman who will do anything to see her men win, and that makes for a very dangerous tag team. These four men took it to the limit in our very first match, so much so that both Teddy Hart and Johnny Kashmere were bleeding rather profusely just a few minutes into the match. These men seemed intent to put each other down for the count as all four used a vast array of power moves. An already Johnny Kashmere took the brunt of the offensive in the closing minutes of the match. Trent Acid was taken out of commission due to a well placed Dawn Marie low blow. This allowed Teddy Hart to nail Kashmere with a brainbuster and a side russian legsweep that perfectly set up NEXTGEN's, a 450 splash/somersault legdrop combo.

NEXTGEN (Jack Evans and Teddy Hart) defeated The Backseat Boyz (Johnny Kashmere and Trent Acid) when Teddy Hart pinned J. Kashmere after a somersault legdrop in 0:12:45.
Rating: *** 1/4

NEXTGEN and Dawn Marie scurried up the ramp to the back, celebrating a hard fought victory much to the chagrin of the fans. Trent Acid crawled back into the ring to check on his fallen partner. You can bet that this is only a minor bump in the road the Backseat Boyz are traveling as a team of their caliber is never too far out of contention.

Match Two:
Intercontinental Tag Team Title Tournament Quarterfinal Match
Creatures of the Night (Fertig/Gangrel) w/Shelly Martinez
Vs
The Dudley Boys

The Dudley Boys have dominated the tag team ranks absolutely everywhere they have gone and it looks as if their stay in NAPW won't be any different. Gangrel and Fertig sure did have an imposing entrance and the fact that they have the vivacious Shelly Martinez by their side could bode well for them somewhere down the line but by all accounts this was the first time these two creatures have ever teamed up. The Dudley Boys absolutely had their way with these two. The creatures were thrown about the ring and physically overpowered at every juncture. Anytime they seemed to be mounting a small offensive a well timed Dudley double team move ended it. The finish saw Bubba Ray brawling on the outside with Gangrel. Shelly Martinez jumped up onto the ring apron to try and distract referee Greg Dixon while Fertig came up from behind Bubba Ray. He moved at the last second and Fertig clobbered Gangrel. D-Von took care of Fertig while Bubba Ray POWERBOMED Gangrel through a table at ringside. Bubba Ray climbed back into the ring and allowed referee Dixon to count Gangrel out.

The Dudley Boys (Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley) defeated Creatures of the Night (Fertig and Gangrel) when Dudley defeated Gangrel by countout in 0:09:31.
Rating: **

Referees in the NAPW count to 20 to try and keep count outs to a minimum but there is just no getting up from a Bubba Ray powerbomb. The Dudley Boys looked extremely impressive tonight and while their second round opponents will most likely be more of a challenge it is hard not to think that the Dudleys are the odds on favorites to win the Tag Team Belts.

HOMICIDE IS ON THE PHONE
The camera cuts to the back where Homicide is in his locker room talking to somebody on the phone. He keeps saying that the wrestling world is going to be shocked when they see this mystery man show up later on tonight in the Battle Royal for the Internet Title. He tells the mystery man that he will do whatever it takes to make sure one of them walks out with the gold tonight. Homicide ends the call by saying that his entrance tonight will be anything but low key.

Match Three
Sabu
Vs
BJ Whitmer

This match featured two of the premier brawlers in NAPW. Sabu is, of course, a hardcore icon and is about as crazy as they come. BJ Whitmer has been making his name on the independent circuits for a few years now and is looking to make the most of this opportunity. It should be noted that Whitmer was anything but scared of Sabu and his reputation. That lack of reverence may have made things a little more painful for Whitmer as he immediately tried to mix it up with Sabu by bringing out a barbed wire baseball bat. Referee Greg Dixon was about to DQ Whitmer for trying to use such a weapon but both Whitmer and Sabu demanded that this match be fought under relaxed rules. From that point on these two absolutely tore into each other with everything they could muster. Chairs were dented, tables were broken bodies were bruised and bloodied. Whitmer kicked out of not one but two Triple Jump Moonsaults and Sabu was able to muster enough strength to get his shoulder up after a wicked Wrist Clutch Exploder. Whitmer capitalized on a sloppy Sabu mistake and put Sabu through a serious of moves that almost put the man from Bombay out of commission. A spinebuster slam, tiger driver, german suplex and superkick weren't enough to keep Sabu down for three but they were enough to weaken him enough for another Wrist Clutch Exploder that finally enabled Whitmer to pick up the victory.

BJ Whitmer pinned Sabu with the Wrist Clutch Exploder in 0:09:04.
Rating: *** 1/4

While the crowd cheered the efforts of the two men it was obvious that they were displeased that Sabu lost. A bloodied Whitmer has some refuse thrown at him while he crawled back up the ramp. He seemingly enjoyed it all as he mockingly pointed up to the ceiling as EMT's rushed passed him to checked on Sabu in the ring. You can bet that Sabu will not be too happy about losing this match and that he will try to extract any measure of revenge possible. A win like this definitely puts Whitmers name up their on a list of possible contenders for the vacant Heavyweight Title.

Match Four
Triple Threat
Val Venis
Vs
"King of the Old School" Steve Corino
Vs
Carlito

This was another match that was made to help sort out the Heavyweight Title picture. All three men are veterans of the ring and each bring a distinct style. While on the losing side of the decisive fall, Val Venis looked very crisp and focused. He still played to the co-eds in the crowd but also seemed intent on bringing the pain to his opponents. Carlito's strategy seemed to translate to staying on the apron and jawing with the fans in the front row. Corino looked very good in the ring as he went on to take the match with a picture perfect Northern Lights Suplex.

Triangle Match: Steve Corino defeated Val Venis and Carlito when S. Corino pinned Venis after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:08:45.
Rating: *** 1/4

Steve Corino quickly exited the ring and celebrated up the ramp. Carlito entered the ring and shoved Val Venis, calling him a loser. Venis took exception to this and shoved Carlito right back. Venis deemed Carlito not worthy of his time and turned his back to exit the ring. This was a huge mistake however as Carlito ran up from behind and nailed Venis with a Lung Blower! Carlito spit on the prone Venis as he left to a chorus of boos from the crowd.

CAPTAIN CHARISMA DOESN'T WANT THE BELT
Backstage, Christian Cage was being interviewed by Lance Wright. Lance asked him what he thought his odds were in terms of winning the Battle Royal for the Internet Title. This set Cage off as he obviously felt he is above the belt. He said that the Internet is only good for porn and dancing monkeys so why would he want to be its champion. Cage declared that the peeps want to see him fighting in the main event for the only belt that counts, the Heavyweight Title. Scott Steiner entered the picture and called Cage nothing but a piece of Garbage from Mexico North (Canada). He told Cage that the day he is the Heavyweight champion will be the saddest day in the history of wrestling. Goldust came from behind Cage and levels him with a nasty clothesline and says how he agrees with Pump. Steiner rages~! At the thought of him and Goldust being on the same page and starts beating him down. He grabs him by the back of the head and leads him out of the back into the arena....

Match Five
"Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner
Vs
Goldust

....and down to the ring. It's hard to even call this encounter a match as Steiner absolutely manhandled Goldust. This is not to say that Goldust can't hold his own in the ring but Steiner had a head start by jumping him backstage. Say what you want about Scott Steiner but when he is in a rage like this he is awfully hard to beat. The fight spilled to the outside rather quickly and Steiner saw an opportunity to lock in the Steiner Recliner he let go and got back into the ring and let an unconscious Goldust be counted out.

Scott Steiner defeated Goldust by countout in 0:04:47.
Rating: *

Steiner screamed at Goldust, telling him to stay the hell out of his business and that next time they are in the ring together he won't be as easy going. Steiner then poses for all his "freaks" in attendance and gets a loud round of boos for his efforts. While two countouts in one show is certainly disappointing the way that Scott Steiner absolutely dominated Goldust with a variety of throws and suplexes was not. If he is on top of his game Scott Steiner can be a major threat and obstacle to anyone who is seeking the Heavyweight Title.

MAIN EVENT
Battle Royal for the VACANT NAPW Internet Title
Colt Cabana / KENTA / Jerry Lynn / Homicide / Ace Steel / Christian Cage / Jeff Hardy / Chris Sabin / Xavier /

Colt Cabana and Jerry Lynn started the match off and spent their two minutes alone feeling each other out. The action picked up as Homicide entered in at number three and immediately took the fight to both men. Cabana and Jerry Lynn played the numbers game and turned their attention to Homicide and beat him down until KENTA came in at number four. He caught Cabana from behind with an extremely stiff roundhouse kick that staged Cabana into the ropes. KENTA then clotheslined him out of the ring for the first elimination at the 4:12 mark. Jeff Hardy and Xavier came in at number five and six respectively and all five men traded blows with one another. Homicide eliminated Jerry Lynn after pinning him with an extremely sick hiptoss that dumped Lynn right on his head. Christian Cage was in at number seven but he really didn't mix it up with any of the competitors. He was content on sitting back and watching the other wrestlers go at it. When it was time for the number eight entry to come in the lights went out and "Son Et Lumiere" by The Mars Volta played. When the lighst came back on LOW KI of all people was standing in the middle of the ring with his hands held up high in the air. He embraced Homicide and they began tearing through everyone in the ring. Ace Steel was next in the ring at number nine but he was just another sacrificial lamb as he took his fair share of bumps an bruises upon entering. Jeff Hardy was the third man eliminated from the battle royal after a devastating Cop Killa put him down for the count. Chris Sabin was the final man in the match coming in at number ten. He was also the fourth man eliminated as Xavier ambushed him immediately with a thesz press type maneuver that was able to keep a surprised Sabin down for the count. A few minutes of back and forth action took place with the team of Homicide and Low Ki taking turns beating on everybody. Christian Cage was eventually eliminated by KENTA after a nasty running forearm smash caught the Canadian superstar square on the jaw. Ace Steel was next to go courtesy of Homicide as he was thrown out of the ring rather handily. KENTA caught Homicide totally by surprise and was able to pin him after a beautiful looking DDT. Low Ki tried to break up the pin but he was a second too late. Before Homicide left the ring he told Ki that it was up to him to win the title. The next seven minutes saw the reamining three, Xavier, KENTA and Low Ki, go at it with an intensity that has rarely been seen in a wrestling ring. Each wrestler teased their finisher several times and KENTA actually hit the Go 2 Sleep on Xavier but couldn't capitalize as Low Ki jumped him from behind. After some back and forth action Low Ki was able to plant KENTA with Ki Krusher to get the pin. Xavier had recovered and snuck up from behind to try and get Low Ki into position for a Samoan drop but Ki had it scouted excellently and pinned him with a sunset flip! LOW KI of all people is the very first NAPW Internet Champion!

10-Man Battle Royal for the vacant NAPW Internet Title: Low Ki won a 10-man Royal Rumble:
x Cabana and J. Lynn started out.
x Homicide entered at 0:02:00
x KENTA entered at 0:04:00

x KENTA defeated Homicide after a DDT in 0:21:01
x Ki defeated KENTA after the Ki Krusher in 0:28:08
x Ki defeated Xavier after a sunset flip in 0:28:14
Rating: *** 3/4
(Low Ki won the NAPW Internet Title.)

Amazing! A man who wasn't even employed by this company until tonight has made an incredible impact by winning the New American Pro Wrestling Internet Title. Homicide comes back down to the ring and embraces Low Ki to a rather mixed reaction to the crowd. Low Ki looks very focused in the ring and the minute he made his enterance there seemed to be a certain aura about him. Low Ki will be a very strong competitor in NAPW for a long time to come. The inaugural show fades out with Low Ki holding the belt high above him in the center of the ring with Homicide right next to him.

YAY!

For some reason the thought of a Cena/Shamrock excites me a little more than it should. I feel dirty now. ;) I was wondering if you'd give Goldust that same Flair Ryan did, but it appears as though the force is strong in you as well. Goldust wants to be Steiner's #1 Freak. I like it already.

Not familiar with the Backseat Boyz and vaguely familiar with Hart & Evans. That having been said I think I'm glad that NEXTGEN took this match home and advance in the tournament.

Going into this one I knew the Dudleys were going to win. It felt to me like they had to. I see a lot of potential in the CotN, but the Dudleys are the Dudleys and them not advancing past the first round I think would've left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the tournament.

Interesting bit with Homicide. I'm all a flutter to find out who he was speaking with. (Well... i know who it is already... but still) ;)

Wasnt' expecting Whitmer to get the win, but I don't think it was a bad thing either. It seems like you're building him up fairly big with the way things went against Sabu. I'm not sure if I buy Whitmer in that position yet, but it's the first card, there is plenty of time to sell me on it.

A good win for Corino and I good debut for Carlito as well. That's what Venis gets for turning him back on him. Which is just... not cool.

haha, and how exactly does Christian know the internet is only good for porn and dancing monkeys? ;)

Aww... Steiner... why must you hate those that love you?

I kinda like that you went with Royal Rumble rules instead of everyone starting all at once. It's an option I think a lot of people (myself included) tend to overlook with a smaller number of people. Oh Snap! Low Ki is in NAPW! Business has just picked up. Thats a hot way to end the show with Low-Ki making his debut by surprise during the main event itself especially when so recently he was a somewhat prominant figure in GCW.

Personally, I think you kicked off NAPW with a bang. Welcome to the universe :)
Snabbit888Posted on 08/08/06 at 23:59:19

Nice opening segment establishes who are the main names in NAPW to start.  Cena is your biggest name I would say, and you have Goldust who is known in this universe for his time in GCW.  And Pump is the best name ever.

Good to see Teddy Hart again... just kidding, I hate him. :)  But a solid tag team match and I figured NEXTGEN would take it.  Don't think they'll win the tourney, but I'm sure they'll be an irritating team all the same.

Thank God you're calling them the Dudleys and not Team 3D.  Ugh to that name.  The Dudleys seem to be the favorites to win it all, but I'm not so sure of that quite yet.  Gotta see who else is in the tourney.

Mystery man, eh?  Well I know who it is, but the interview wasn't that sublte to begin with.  Which is fine, because too much subtlety can be a detriment. :)

Did not expect Whitmer to win, but I'm glad he did.  It establishes him as a player right off the bat and he has what could be a brutal feud with Sabu ready to go.  Whitmer is already one of my favorites in NAPW.

Carlito, you dick.  I like Val Venis so it's good to see him not necessarily being used as enhancement talent and a complete joke.  He's a very underrated worker so I think a feud with Carlito, who is still a bit green, could do wonders for both.

Christian, you dick (round two).  You do not devalue the secondardy title in a new promotion on the first night.  You deserve the beating you got.  And I expect mucho comedy from Steiner/Goldust.

Steiner crushes Goldust.  If I know Goldust though, his love will not be deterred.

I like the way you debuted Low Ki.  He was a backstage problem in GCW which is why he was shown the door bt perhaps the more TNA/ROH feel of NAPW will be a better fit for him.  And this is now the third unique championship he has won in the universe, as he is former GCW Cruiserweight and World Tag Team champion.

I really enjoyed this first show.  You have the appropriate feel to it and it fits right into the universe perfectly.  Welcome aboard, Lambie.
suicidalbynaturePosted on 08/09/06 at 00:41:02

Thanks you, I think my two favorite parts of this card was the Goldust and Steiner interaction and Homicide's phone call. The ending should give it away when he said that this entrance will be anything but LOW KEY! HAR HAR HAR.
AzraelPosted on 08/09/06 at 04:50:48

Oooh, new fed.

Good opening segment with four (well, three and Goldust) of the big names in your fed. Goldust is a little disturbing, which is probably as he should be.

I don't really like any of the four guys in this match, but it does make sense to put Hart and Evans over. Their finisher sounds pretty cool though.

The Dudleys definitely seem like the favorites to win the tournament. I would have thought that the Creatures would have lost by pinfall, but the countout does get over the different rules plus tables.

Good segment with Homicide. It could be any number of people...

Surprised Whitmer went over, even though Sabu did kick out of a lot of stuff. Sabu will definitely be looking for revenge.

Corino starts out pretty well in NAPW, but Carlito also gets his heat back afterward. Val doesn't look so hot though. I'm looking forward to seeing what Corino does in this fed.

Good segment with Christian and Steiner. Goldust is still weird and Steiner kills him. Completely believable and you get across his roid rage so well.

I like that you had a pinfalls only Royal Rumble for the belt. It's certainly an interesting match type. I also like the special entrance that Low Ki got. The finish was good too, even if there were some weird timing problems in the match (like Sabin getting pinned after 2 seconds). Hopefully Low Ki can go far.

Good first card.

Well, it'll take some time to establish everyone, particularly those I know little about and you did that quite nicely - you didn't bother going into detail on the Steiner/Goldust and Venis/Carlito/Corino matches when it came to the characters and back stories because quite frankly you didn't need to. First thing you do in the opening match between two lesser known teams - quick introduction to explain who they are and what their approach is. Nice move, and there'll be plenty of time to go into detail on future cards. The same thing applied in the next two matches and B.J. Whitmer, the one I know least about got a big win and instantly I'll be remembering that.

Ooh, Homicide is on the phone to a mystery guy, it could be anybo... oh, it's Low Ki. ;) If you were going for building fan expectation of a Low Ki appearance, it worked beautifully. If you were going for subtlety and keeping people in the dark, you failed. Seriously though, Low Ki's entrance was quite cool since I've never seen that in a battle royal/Royal Rumble and that includes other peoples TNM circuits. Nice finish as well which rounded off the show nicely.

The only criticism I could possibly have would be hyping that count-outs are really unlikely due to a mandatory 20 count and still getting two of them on the first show alone (though Goldust falling inappropriately in love with someone is ALWAYS good for a laugh).

How did you determine that he was a backstage problem? Just for flavor, or do you have a method?

And how are you two running it, as I understand it, NAPW and GCW are competitors.. do you honor wrestlers quitting and not re-signing?
Snabbit888Posted on 08/19/06 at 00:01:03

I determined he was a backstage problem just based on how I was pushing him, which was as a midcarder with no real threat to break through, plus his real life reputation.  I wanted to cut some roster anyway, and so this became a good way to do it while adding some flavor.

We are in competition, but non-universe we work together somewhat.  We don't help each other book or anything like that, but we do talk to make sure we don't have any mistakes.  So like I'll tell Lambie I'm gonig to hire so and so and he'll say, "Okay... do you care if I sign so and so?"  That way, we don't accidentally sign the same wrestler and debut him at the same time.

And I dunno about him, but I don't always honor wrestlers quitting.  Often it just doesn't make sense, so I don't let it mess with my booking unelss I have a good workaround for it.  The only thing I honor 100% of the time is injuries.
