[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 10/31/05

Snabbit888Posted on 08/08/06 at 05:43:56

Global Championship Wrestling made its way up to North Dakota for the first time ever as the FargoDome in Fargo was packed for Monday Night Explosion! On this Halloween edition, we have a battle royal to determine the fourth and final competitor in the X Title ladder match at Glory! Also, Hardcore Holly and Ken Doane will take on the Basham Brothers! If that wasn't enough, Rob Van Dam and Randy Orton will go one-on-one, and we will here from World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar! And in our main event, a huge opportunity for a young competitor as Frankie Kazarian tries to make the Future now as he takes on John Bradshaw Layfield! Kazarian was brutally attacked at the hands of JBL and the Corporation a couple of weeks ago and he has vowed to get revenge! All of that and so much more!

Match #1
8-man Battle Royal
Winner receives fourth spot in X Title Ladder Match at Glory
Participants: "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, "Primetime" Elix Skipper, "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels, D-Ray 3000, Petey Williams, Stevie Richards, Paul Burchill
We kicked the show off in exciting fashion as we were going to know who would join CM Punk, Shark Boy, and Kid Kash in the ladder match at Glory to determine the first X champion. Elix Skipper made promises last week that he would win this battle royal, and in the early minutes he looked to be following through on those words as he eliminated Stevie Richards and D-Ray 3000 after the first couple minutes, and then caught Bryan Danielson by surprise shortly there after. With each elimination, Primetime's confidence level was growing exponentially. In doing so, he took his eye off of the prize when he thought he had eliminated AJ Styles as well. But the Phenomenal One had other plans as he grabbed onto the top rope and held on. Skipper saw this and went to break Styles' grip, but the former Television champion skinned the cat, wrapped his legs around Skipper's head and tossed him out of the ring before pulling himself back in. The crowd loved it; Skipper did not.

This halved the competitors in the ring that started as we were left with Petey Williams, Paul Burchill, Styles, and Christopher Daniels, who up until this point had kept a low profile as he is still nursing injuries. Burchill once again impressed in the ring, riding a bit of momentum after a good showing against Brock Lesnar last week. He was in this match as he won a coin flip with his tag team partner Doug Williams (you'll find out Williams' fate a little later), and he made the Commonwealth proud as he wrestled competitively, but couldn't avoid a Petey Williams dropkick and an exit from the match. We saw some great exchanges between Petey, Styles, and Daniels for the next couple of minutes, one that saw the Fallen Angel eat the Canadian Destroyer. He was about to throw Daniels out, but Styles, who had taken a lariat from Daniels not long before, was back up and planted the young Canadian with a sitdown faceslam that stunned him enough that Styles got him out to the floor.

We were down to the nitty gritty now as it would be either AJ Styles or Christopher Daniels moving on to Glory. Styles looked to have the easy road here as the Fallen Angel was still trying to shake off the effects of the Canadian Destroyer, which is not an easy thing to do. Styles took the fight right to Daniels, wanting to capitalize on his groggy state, hitting him with a beautiful Asai moonsault into an inverted DDT. At this point it wasn't a matter of if Styles won this match, but when. That is until Styles hit the ropes and suddenly flew over the top rope and to the floor! There was a bit of confusion at first until we saw that ELIX SKIPPER had pulled down the ropes!

8-Man Battle Royal:
Christopher Daniels won an 8-man Battle Royal:
x Skipper threw out Richards in 0:01:26
x Skipper threw out D-Ray in 0:02:18
x Skipper threw out B. Danielson in 0:04:41
x Styles threw out Skipper in 0:06:26
x P. Williams threw out Burchill in 0:07:09
x Styles threw out P. Williams after a sitdown faceslam in 0:09:15
x C. Daniels threw out Styles in 0:10:27
Rating: *** 1/4

Skipper did not take kindly to Styles "ruining" his chance at wrestling in the X Title match, so he took it upon himself to ruin Styles' opportunity as well. Primetime didn't stop at just causing Styles' elimination as he threw the Phenomenal One head first into the steps and choked him with a video cable before Bryan Danielson came down and ran him off. Despite how it happened, Christopher Daniels won the battle royal and joins CM Punk, Shark Boy, and Kid Kash in the X Title ladder match. Daniels will not only have a shot at gold, but also one more shot at Punk, but he needs to take it easy before then because his performance tonight showed the world that he is not at 100%.

RHYNO WANTS HIS MONEY
John Bradshaw Layfield and the World Tag Team champions Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, collectively the Corporation, along with Corporate limo driver Lamont, were backstage talking about the beating they were sure JBL was to give to Frankie Kazarian tonight when Rhyno walked in. "JBL, I want my money. I did a lot of favors for you a few months back and you never paid me what you owe me." JBL flat out lied to Rhyno and told him he didn't have the money. "What is all this about you being the richest man in wrestling then, JBL?" Rhyno wondered aloud. JBL changed his tune a bit when he saw Rhyno getting increasingly angry and tried to make things better by offering the Manbeast a spot in the Corporation, promising Rhyno big money. "No. Just get me my money, JBL, or I'm going to take it out of your ass!" JBL didn't like what Rhyno had to say, so when Rhyno was turning to leave, he had the World's Greatest Tag Team jump him, pounding him to the ground before tossing him outside of their locker room and locking the door, which is a good thing because Rhyno was immediately pounding on the door to get back in. After a couple of moments the noise stopped as the Corporation laughed about what they just did.

Match #2
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. Doug Williams (w/ Paul Burchill)
...And this was the fate that Doug Williams received for losing the coin flip to Paul Burchill. Burchill was in his corner for moral support, but you need a lot more than moral support to defeat the big cat from the Serengeti, especially when that big cat is furious. You could practically see Brown picturing Edge's face on Williams' body, and it was not pretty for the member of Anarchy. Burchill WANTED to interfere, but the Alpha Male was fueled by such intensity that he didn't get a chance to before Brown plastered his partner with the Pounce to put this one to a definitive end.

Monty Brown pinned Doug Williams with the Pounce in 0:05:47.
Rating: *** 3/4

After the way Monty Brown completely decimated Doug Williams tonight, the last person in the world I'd want to be is Edge, who has to corral this wild animal somehow at Glory. Good luck with that one, Rated R Superstar.

BOOKER T/REY MYSTERIO JR. AND MNM ARGUE OVER WHO SHOULD GET THE NEXT TITLE SHOT
We cut back to the office of Tommy Dreamer, which is filled to the brim with people as Booker T, Rey Mysterio Jr., Sharmell, Johnny Nitro, Joey Mercury, and Melina have all come to argue their case about who should wrestle the World's Greatest Tag Team for the World Tag Team Titles next. MNM are playing the card that since they won Tag Team Turmoil they should be entitled to the title shot before Booker and Mysterio. A valid point, but Booker and Mysterio contend that since they beat MNM last week, they should get the title shot at Glory. The bickering continued until Dreamer exploded and told them all to shut up. "You guys want to settle this? Settle it in the ring. We'll have a rematch from last week. Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. MNM. Whichever team wins gets the World's Greatest Tag Team at Glory."

Match #3
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane/Hardcore Holly vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Daffney)
A week ago, The Basham Brothers helped CM Punk retain the Television title against Hardcore Holly by attacking Ken Doane, leading the Alabama Slamma to be counted out. On paper, a great idea. In reality though, the surly Hardcore Holly is not a man you want to get pissed at you, as Doug and Danny found out the hard way tonight. It is obvious that Holly has been trying to toughen up Doane as the Teen Phenom is walking around with that chip on his shoulder, very reminiscent of his tag team partner. Doane and Holly continue to improve by leaps and bounds as a unit, but despite the beating they were putting on the Bashams, they found great difficulty in contending with the distractions of Shaniqua and Daffney on the floor. Holly tried to keep Doane focused, but after Shaniqua tripped him up, the Teen Phenom flipped his lid and chased after her on the floor. He almost caught her, but instead he caught a huge lariat off the apron from Doug Basham. Doane may have hit the back of his head on the floor as he was a bit out of it as Doug put him back in the ring where Danny hit the Brain Damage and this one was over.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when Danny Basham pinned K. Doane with the Brain Damage in 0:06:56.
Rating: *** 3/4

Another close but no cigar outing for Doane and Holly. I'm sure after Doane's lapse in judgment, the Alabama Slamma is going to be all over him for the next week.

Match #4
Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. and MNM couldn't come to a decision earlier as to who should get the next title shot at the World's Greatest Tag Team (surprise, surprise), so Tommy Dreamer told them to duke it out tonight in a rematch of last week. MNM's strategy was to get Booker and Mysterio out of their comfort zone early, which Melina took upon herself to accomplish. Booker T is a fierce competitor, but one thing he does not take kindly too is anyone messing with his wife, Sharmell. Melina is more than just a pretty face as she knows all the strengths and weaknesses of everyone in GCW, and she exploited that by slapping Sharmell across the face. Booker was in a rage, making a move to the outside, but Nitro and Mercury clobbered him from behind and went on the attack. Booker played Ricky Morton for much of this match as the pieces were falling into place perfectly as far as MNM were concerned. You're not going to beat Booker without a fight though as he fought back when he moved out of the way of a standing shooting star press from Johnny Nitro and made the hot tag to Mysterio, who immediately caught Mercury with a springboard seated senton. Mysterio used the speed and quickness he possesses to stay a step ahead of MNM, but the numbers got to him before Booker was back into it and the match went bonzo gonzo. Melina tried to get involved again, but Sharmell pulled her down off the apron and nailed her with a right hand to a huge pop from the crowd. This motivated her charges even more as Mysterio hit a 6-1-9 and Booker followed with the Axe Kick to get the 1-2-3.

Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) when Booker pinned Mercury after the Axe Kick in 0:07:44.
Rating: *** 1/2

Melina's post-match tantrum sums up how this match went for MNM, who look to have lost their tag team title shot to Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr., who have officially been signed to meet the World's Greatest Tag Team at Glory. Booker and Mysterio have risen to the top of the tag division in a hurry, and this sudden escalation to the top might be enough for them to take the tag titles. You just know that MNM are going to have a lot to say about this though.

BROCK LESNAR IS NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE CORPORATION
The World Heavyweight champion met with Maria backstage for an interview. The politely titled "IQ-challenged" Maria spent a few moments gawking at how big Lesnar's neck was before asking him if he was concerned about John Bradshaw Layfield and the Corporation. "Am I concerned? No, I'm not concerned. JBL is a tough guy and has considerable monetary funds. But in this business, you can't buy championships. Money doesn't pin the World champion's shoulders to the mat. And JBL and the entire Corporation is going to find out the hard way that you need more than money to beat Brock Lesnar."

Match #5
Abyss vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
If Kid Kash was upset about losing the Cruiserweight Title to Shark Boy a couple of weeks back, imagine how upset he was when he found out he had to wrestle Abyss. Kash has a chance to be the X champion at Glory, but despite his talents and Lance Hoyt at ringside, he didn't stand a chance against the angry Abyss. Kash hardly got any offense in as Abyss plowed through him, pinning him with the torture rack drop.

Abyss pinned Kid Kash after the torture rack drop in 0:02:28.
Rating: ** 3/4

Poor Kid Kash. Lance Hoyt thought about tangling with Abyss, but he saw how pissed off he was and thought better of it, instead pulling Kash to safety. Randy Orton is going to have his hands full at Glory to say the least.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - SHARK BOY
We had a fun edition of Palumbo's Pizza Place as the Cruiserweight champion Shark Boy invaded the goofiest show on television. It was a dangerous thing to put the Italian Stallion and Sharkie in the same ring together with a live microphone as the string of absurdity that followed was truly stunning on so many levels. Shark Boy was playing like a big man to try to act tough in front of Palumbo, as if Palumbo is known for being a big bully you need to impress. Shark Boy's ramblings turned to Kid Kash and how he made a fool out of him, which prompted LANCE HOYT to come out. Hoyt wasn't here for words though as he immediately smashed Shark Boy in the face with a huge big boot. Kash's muscle was looking to finish the job when Chuck Palumbo pulled him off of the Cruiserweight champion. Hoyt was almost stunned at first that the Italian Stallion had the gall to stick his nose into his business. Palumbo grabbed the mic and told Hoyt to leave Shark Boy alone and he was going to have to ask him to leave his fine pizzeria establishment. Hoyt started to leave, but when he saw Palumbo turn around, he jumped him from behind, hitting him with a pizza pan that rattled his brains. Hoyt picked Palumbo up and dropped him with a move he calls the Blackout before leaving Palumbo's Pizza Place in ruins.

Match #6
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. Randy Orton
Randy Orton may have a new bitter streak, but you can't have an Orton without a lot of ego, and that's what Orton was coming into this match with Rob Van Dam with. After Abyss' dominant display over Kid Kash earlier in the show, in Orton's mind he NEEDED to duplicate that performance to keep pace. The problem with that was that Rob Van Dam wasn't going to lay down and let Orton waltz on by him, and this led to a tremendous fast-paced match. RVD's normal tag team partner, Eric Angle, was not in the building so he knew he was going to have to contend with Orton's antics using only his own merits. RVD did quite finely for himself, using those educated feet to stay a step ahead of Orton for most of this match, which only served to piss Orton off. Orton went from trying to outwrestle RVD to brawling with him, and here he had much better luck that he had been. Orton maliciously went after RVD's surgically repaired neck, twisting and turning it to every angle he possibly could. RVD fought hard though, showing what kind of combatant he is by using his athleticism to get back in the match. However, he once again crashed and burned on the Five Star Frog Splash attempt, much like he did last week, and it resulted in Orton hitting a beautiful flying cross body press to get the win.

Randy Orton pinned Rob Van Dam after a flying cross body press in 0:09:00.
Rating: *** 3/4

Orton had a little more trouble than he would have liked tonight but he picked up the win which is ultimately what matters. RVD, on the other hand, once again wrestled a great match, but his propensity to take big risks once again didn't pay off. I don't think a couple of hard losses is going to phase RVD one bit, as he too is oozing with confidence.

CHRIS BENOIT TRIES TO CALM FRANKIE KAZARIAN DOWN BEFORE HIS FIRST MAIN EVENT
With just minutes before our main event, a nervous Frankie "The Future" Kazarian was backstage with his mentor, "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. "This is it, kid," Benoit started. "A lot of people might look at this and think no big deal. You're in the main event of a TV show in a match with no titles on the line. But this is the main event, and that means one thing - you've made it. No matter what happens out there - you win, you lose, you draw - it doesn't matter, because you've made it and no one can take that away from you. Now JBL is big, he's strong. He's a barroom brawler. And I won't lie to you, kid - you're going to take an ass beating out there. But you can beat this guy. That's why you wrestle the matches." Benoit might not be known for being the most charismatic guy on the planet, but he knows how to get it done in the ring, and he has a lot of wisdom. And based on how pumped up Kazarian was after this talk, maybe Benoit has a future as a motivational speaker.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
On paper our main event wasn't the best offering available, mostly because Frankie Kazarian is by and large an unproven commodity in Global Championship Wrestling. Riding a wave of momentum after two consecutive victories over Lance Storm and earning a North American Title shot, Kazarian asked for this match with the number-one-contender to the World Heavyweight Title, John Bradshaw Layfield. After JBL defeated Chris Benoit a couple of weeks ago, Kazarian suffered a beating thanks to the Corporation. Kazarian is young and full of spark and he's trying to capture lightning in a bottle against the next challenger to Lesnar and the World Heavyweight Title. Kazarian was in over his head in the early stages as JBL was having a good time slapping him around. The Future kept his head in the game though and surprised JBL with a flurry of offense started by a small package for a nearfall. Kazarian hit a DDT and a big splash for another near fall, but a cross body attempt resulted in him being the victim of the Last Call, which stopped him in his tracks. JBL smiled and let out a small sigh of relief, joking about how close that was to him losing the match. JBL continued to toy with Kazarian when his partners in crime, THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM, came down to ringside to get a closer look at their boss beating on the youngster. CHRIS BENOIT came down as well because by no means did he want to see the man he has taken under his wing get screwed here by interference.

Benoit's shouting advice and encouragement gave Kazarian a second wind as he got a boot up in JBL's face when he charged at the Future in the corner. Kazarian followed up with a spin kick that nearly knocked the big man off his feet, and then shocked everyone when he nailed JBL with the Wave of the Future. Kazarian made the cover as the fans chanted along, but JBL just barely got his foot draped across the bottom rope to save his skin. Kazarian couldn't believe it as he pleaded his case with referee Jimmy Appleseed, but Benoit wisely told Kazarian not to worry about the ref and focus on what he was doing. Kazarian strung together some more moves before making his way to the top rope, but JBL caught him and crotched him on the top before hitting a big time superplex. Moments later he nailed the Stock Market Crash and JBL escaped with a victory by the skin of his teeth.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Frankie Kazarian with the Stock Market Crash in 0:12:06.
Rating: *** 1/2

You have to hand it to Frankie Kazarian. He had the odds completely against him but he brought all that he had to his match tonight and fell just a bit short. His night wasn't quite over though as Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin jumped in the ring to continue beating on Kazarian, which of course prompted Benoit to intervene to fight off the World Tag team champions. He did an admirable job until JBL nailed him from behind with a hard forearm shot and dropped him with a power bomb. Benoit and Kazarian were getting the tar kicked out of them until EDDIE GUERRERO of all people came out and unexpectedly went after the Corporation! Eddie was on fire as he took turns nailing all three members with right hands as Benoit and Kazarian regained their bearings and went back to work. The tide had turned until LANCE STORM and EDGE joined in the battle, which brought out MONTY BROWN and BROCK LESNAR and we had ourselves a 10-man brawl! The show went off the air with the babyfaces clearing the ring of the heels.

americamamushiPosted on 08/08/06 at 06:38:31

The battle royal lived up to it's potential.  Skipper looked great in the opening half of the match only to get eliminated by Styles.  For a minute I thought Styles would take it instead, but his and Danielsons' beef with Skipper was continued nicely by the screwing of AJ.  I'm just hoping that Daniels will be 100% come the PPV.  If he is I'll pick him to unify the titles, if not I think it'll be Punk that does it.

Yeah JBL, smart move jackass.  And he still has to go to the ring to face Kazarian.  JBL would be better off staying locked in that room as long as possible now.

Good win for Brown.  Edge has to be getting a little worried even if he won't admit it.  Williams is no slouch.

The tandem of Holly and Doane grows on me more and more every week.  But the Bashams have been making a strong comeback after aligning themselves with CM Punk.

Booker and Rey may have a shot at the tag team titles, but MNM aren't happy that they lost and I imagine are already plotting how they are going to get back and Booker, Rey and Sharmell

I don't care if you do have Lance Hoyt in your corner.  An angry Abyss is not someone you wanna fuck with.

NOOOOOOOOOO!  NOT PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE!  That bastard! :)

I enjoyed the main event.  Kazarian faired better than I thought he would against JBL.  Yay for Eddie doing the right thing.  And the cluster fuck ending.  Gotta love it ;)  Tender vittles indeed.

Great as always wrestle buddy

Right guy won the battle royal there, no question. The next few cards will dictate to me whom I reckon will take it as it's tight to call right now. Skippers beef with whomever seems to be around continues nicely.

Rhyno... did a job for a main event heel in return for some money and then instead of them paying him, Rhyno got beat up instead. I'll just  ;) and move on.

Squash win for Brown, no surprises there. Williams never quite made the same lofty levels he had when he initially made his GCW debut did he. Oh well.

The Bashams are actually winning matches now so it's good that they haven't got lost in the shuffle. Don't tell me Doane and Holly are going to split already...

Well, MNM lose their shot that never was. Oh well. In the meantime, Booker and Rey continue to make leaps and bounds, I'm beginning to think they might pull it off at Glory.

Another squash, but Abyss REALLY decimated the competition here. We haven't seen much of Hoyt in the ring yet either, just thought I'd make note. Abyss' run continues though.

Palumbo defends Shark Boy... that'll explain the message you left me (I'll let you know if I think of anything). I guess we might see Hoyt wrestle soon after all.

RVD hasn't won many since returning, but that'll put Orton over very nicely. I'm thinking he'll pull it out against Abyss myself.

That'll put Kazarian over as a threat very well. JBL HAD to win that one clean, else he wouldn't be taken seriously as a world title challenger but that'll do Kazarian no harm. And, oh man, if I've got my dates right, I think there's only one show left for Eddie. Be interesting to see how you wrap up his GCW tenure.

I think that this and the GLWF are the best feds running here.  However, I do have two questions about finishing moves:

1) Why is Booker T's finisher called the "Axe Kick"?  I thought it was the "Scissors Kick"?

2) What's JBLs "Stock Market Crash"?  Is that the powerbomb he used where he acted like he put a cigar out on his opponent's back?
Snabbit888Posted on 08/08/06 at 21:00:11

1) Axe Kick, Scissor Kick... it's all the same.  I just prefer Axe Kick to Scissor Kick. :)

2) The Stock Market Crash is the Clothesline From Hell.  I changed the so it was more appropriate to JBL's character.

Clever booking of the battle-royal. Not only did you set up another meeting between Daniels and Punk, you ignited a Skipper vs Styles feud as well.

So.. it's gonna be the Spear vs. the Pounce at Glory? Any chance they may collide and we can call it a draw?

The lesson continues for young Doane. I guess it's just a matter of time before the tag-team crashes and they go at each other. Holly is not exactly the most patient of teacher, me thinks.

MNM loses the title shot? That's lousy  ;D  I thought this match was to settle who got the title shot first. MNM will get their shot, and their title soon enough.

Palumbo vs Hoyt next week? That's my guess anyways.

Kazarian is being built very nicely, I like it that he's moving away from the cruiser division. Kazarian is too big for that anyway, and you do have a lot of potential candidates to the new X title. I'm not sure if he's ready for the North American title just yet, but he'll get there in time. Good main event, and a great chaotic brawl to end it all.
